    Love You Guys So Much. Love Aaron's new Entrance Theme Song. I have been watching you for probably about 3 years now and yes Gardening can be expensive but it is what I do. I don't take Fancy Vacations, I play in the Garden. I have learned so much from you. I now have drip to 5 of my beds and need to add to 4 more. I have to run it off of my one outdoor faucet with a Timer but it works. My flower beds are so much more Beautiful than before. I have gotten several compliments this year on my front yard gardens and I have you to thank for that. There is no better therapy than a day in the dirt and time in the Garden just listening to nature and enjoying the view. Thank you for all you do 💖💖💖

      My hubby let me get flowers at lowes, (our local garden center has really nothing but annuals and veggies i grow from seed) and he didnt tell me my limit, sooo i went and got about 10 different plants and spent over $200! Mind you i had already spent 100$ from a Christmas gift card, and 100$ of my own money... And i keep buying clearance plants. If they dont look diseased, i bring them home and give them love and they look amazing... So.. I know how you feel on the $500. O.O

    Yes, sister, PREACH! Also grew up with no money, 7 kids, dad disabled, no music lessons (got my clarinet at a pawnshop for $20), no eating out, etc, but we were creative and made our own stuff and had fun with it! I could spend a lot more on my garden, but I am still cheap, and make it work! Like you said, I take inspiration from what you do and say to myself, "How can I do that here in my spot?" btw, I did a DIY raised butterfly bed with cinder blocks which cost me about $10! It's like a game....beat the system, use your creativity, and have fun!

      Similar circumstances, disabled mom, father is a non entity. My grandma taught me about gardening. She was on a budget too, it really is about doing what you can. Seeds are cheap, and some of them are easy to grow. If you buy plants in containers, it is better to budget for a few healthy plants, than many substandard plants. Perennials cost more, so you can buy annuals in the beginning (6 packs can be just a couple of dollars) and add a perennials as you go along through the years. It is also nice if you know other gardeners and maybe you can exchange some things. I have irises that I dug up my great aunt years ago, and I have a camellia that a friend gave to me that had volunteered from one that her grandfather in law had planted. I have given away many daylilies, irises, and black-eyed-susans over the years.
      If you have poor soil, it is better to put money in the soil than in the plants in the beginning. When I was in high school I literally started with three tomato plants, 3 squash, some zinnia and sunflower seeds, one rosebush someone gave me, and a six pack of petunias. None of it was perfect and I was never getting into a magazine, but it brought a lot of color, and produced some food, and I learned a lot.
      Seriously anyone who wants summer color, and does not have much money, just get some Black Kow, sunflower seeds and zinnia seeds. You can do that for less than $8 and it is practically idiot proof as long and you don't let the seeds dry out.

    When I was growing up, we had a heck of a time battling Japanese beetles in the garden. To my mother's dismay, they loved the "expensive" shrubs/trees. We literally had to hand pick them. It was the only thing that worked. We got them all cleared out one summer and every following spring we were vigilant in observing any potential activity. We've never had a problem since. It was a family effort and we still take a lot of pride in how beautiful my mother's garden is today.

      Sarah Rosario in my yard their favorites are anything in the hollyhock family and any willow. All my pussywillows and roses are reduced to lace. I lose my organic cool and get out the Raid. The organic stuff just seems to slow them down. I check the next day and they are slow motion but alive and the third day they are gone. I think they recover and go to invite friends.

      V Gil They love our neighbor’s pussywillow, our apple trees and privets, and have developed quite an appetite for my peanuts. Oddly, I hardly find any on my hollyhocks and they are only now finding my hibiscus (which just started blooming). I don’t know if it’s because I installed a bird feeder nearby or what, but they have slowed down on our apple trees. I was picking a full dozen or two off them every night, but now I usually only find 3 or 4. The trees are actually putting on new, healthy growth! It might actually be a blessing in disguise...a fungus had started appearing on the apple leaves right before the beetles showed up. 🤷‍♀️

      lol....I thought of and tried to add a comment about that but i don't know if it posted. There are garden clubs and if not one around can start one where people can share plants split perennials share seeds etc. You can also do compost whether by yourself or with family/friends or even community. There are community gardens all over the place where people can have a section and plant it with whatever they want/need. The water is there etc. I understand how expensive it is but there is always a way to make the world more beautiful. Start small....and build on it.
      I do not like when comments come at Laura and Aaron saying that not everyone has money and help and blah blah blah. That all they are doing videos for is the money......well duh ... it is there job. If they were not so wonderful and knowledgeable then noone would watch them and they would not make enough money to make this their full time jobs. Trying to make them feel bad getting that new property with all the people having no jobs no money no food etc....come on people. Everything they do helps us collectively .

    Some things to take care of Japanese Beetles:
    Neem Oil reduces feeding by blocking the pheromone they produce that lets other beetles that they have found food. Milky spore or Nematodes kill the larvae that live in the grass during spring, Pyritherin will kill them on contact ,but spray responsibly because it will kill all insects, even the good ones. Insecticidal soap is also effective because it disorients them so you can easily take them off plants and place them into a bucket soapy water which also acts as a deterrent that keeps them away because they are repelled by the scent of dead beetles. Also, never spray a mixture of dish soap and water on your plants because there is a chance that it can hurt your plants because the detergents in the soap is sometimes too strong. Use the insecticidal soap instead because it’s formulated to not cause damage to plants and only deal with the pests. I have dealt with Japanese beetles in my area for decades and no single thing seems to work but using all of these things seems to work best in the long haul. A note on the traps, they are essentially useless if your property is not large enough to bait them far enough away from your plants. There are some wasps you can buy that prey on them but I’ve never tried that so I don’t know how well it works.

    • @seanaames6855
      @seanaames6855 4 года назад

      I was just reading about those parasitic wasps. They're called Tiphia vernalis. Apparently, they don't eat that many though. I was a bit disappointed. We're east of Denver, CO. Japanese Beetles are moving steadily toward us. 🥺 I'm looking for some biological controls.

      I am in Va and have fought Japanese Beetles for years. The best treatment I have found is to treat the ground larvae in the spring. Milky spore is good. I follow it up with a spray on my roses as well.

    • @twobluestripes
      @twobluestripes 4 года назад

      This! I have read that using milky spore consistently over a few years will make the best difference. I think even those folks who don’t have them affecting their garden much should use the milky spore on their lawns in the areas the japanese beetle is found in to help control it.
      I live in Southern California, and a lot of people confuse our native figeater beetles for japanese beetles. They can actually be controlled the same way, with milky spore, and the same pesticides, but they are apparently way less destructive. They will eat all our soft-skinned fruits off the trees, though, as the name implies! The poor southeast and mid atlantic has to deal with both japanese beetles AND their slightly smaller green june beetles, which are a cousin of our figeaters.

      I live in NE Kansas and I deal with June bugs, Japanese beetles and the figeater beetles. I don't know why I have so many figeaters because I have no fruit trees. Luckily I don't see much damage from them but they fly around crazy and smack me in the face because apparently they aren't very good navigators...haha. Japanese beetles are definitely very destructive. I started putting out milky spore this year so hopefully I'll see some benefit next year. It's funny because my mother in law lives about a mile from me and she has no japanese beetles.

    To Patricia.....neem oil is amazing for keeping pests from your plants. I used it on my roses and nothing has bothered them for the last month. According to online accounts, if the Japanese beetle eats neem oil, it will pass down to the eggs, preventing them from hatching. It’s a natural product, however as Laura says, use it after honey bees have retired. Also make sure to dilute it; 1tsp neem oil, + 1/2 tsp dish soap to 1 quart of water.

Hopefully the highlights channel shows as a suggestion to your regular channel viewers...it did for me and then I subscribed to it as well. You do an awesome job covering a broad range of questions and I come away feeling I’ve had a fun mini gardening course. Thank you for taking the time to do these! My only question at this point is, “Where’s Benjamin?” Both of you are working here and unless he’s napping I can’t imagine you doing all you two do without an extra person watching him. He’s such a chill little guy though and seems really cooperative when he’s out with you. Fingers crossed your new little one is just as easy!

    Gardening can be expensive if you want it to be. I buy a couple of things each year and I try to buy perennials that I can break up into more perennials. But it is all so enjoyable that it is worth it. Also Laura....so funny that you moved inside because of the beeping. My dog hears it & keeps barking and running for the door thinking something is out in the yard. lol!

    You mentioned crab apple trees a few times. Our house has the mother of all crab apples , I was told it is an oriental ornamental crab apple. The trunk is nearly 5 feet across and the canopy is 80-100ft across. The apples are about the size of blueberries and each branch has 100s of them. I have no idea how old it is but thank who ever planted it. I pruned the low branches a few weeks ago because it was getting hard to mow under. We like to picnic under it and our beagle's grave is under it. In the spring it looks like a giant snowball.

      I know the noise they’re referring to, I’ve heard it many times and I’ve even asked the same question myself and never received a response or acknowledgment about it. It sounds like a chain-like noise, at times it has been quite bothersome to watch her videos if the sound is prominant in the video. I have superhuman hearing and seem to pick up on it quite easily from time to time. It hasn’t been that bad in recent months though. :) I’m glad she finally addressed it but, I’m not sure she understands what or where the noise is coming from either because it seems to be louder at times when she moves, not when the camera is focusing. :)
