Fun seed story that got me hooked on planting seeds at a young age. My first grade teacher said we could go through the kitchen cabinets and find things to plant. Excited, I ran right home and found popcorn, beans and macaroni 🤣. 55 years later I’m still at it less the macaroni. That one teacher planted the joy of gardening in my soul.

    • @MarenM4085
      @MarenM4085 4 года назад +7

Too bad the macaroni didn’t germinate 😢 🤣 my teacher gave us coffee beans to grow. Mine actually germinated and grew to about 15 cm but I didn’t take good enough care of it so it died.

My 4th grade teacher did something similar to me, but with recycling... ever since Ive been a huge advocate for recycling! I remember asking my mom to get us a tecycling bin, then running around the house asking my mom "can I recycle this?" "Can i recyle this?"

Aaron!!! The graphics and typing in plant names was soooo helpful. Thank you for your time and effort on it. So much easier to remember things without having to jot it down or attempting to remember something only to forget it upon shopping mood. Appreciate that added effort!

Okay Laura, you have “seeded” at least a dozen ideas for future videos! Your mom’s Pumpkin Pot Pie, Garlic Cream soup, Butterscotch Squash. How about a couple baking videos, a couple soup videos, maybe some corn ideas? What about loading us up with cooking, decorating, and how to use what you grow? Because of you and Aaron my landscape has change a lot, new concrete planters, new garden areas, raised gardens, more flowers, wow, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! Your energy and imagination feeds me, inspires me, and encourages me! Thank you!

Oh my goodness. I never knew seeds were good forever. I thought if the package said “packaged for 2019”, that meant it was good only to plant in 2019. I have thrown away soooooo many seeds. Im learning so much from you! Only took me to age 64 to start getting pretty good looking gardens (again thanks to all you’ve taught/shared with us). After watching your recent maintenance video, I’ve even started a garden maintenance plan & now I’m not overwhelmed or exhausted, my gardens are being kept weeded & tidied, and I truly enjoy my gardens. I just can’t thank you enough!! Hugs to you both.

Something that I learned from an excellent gardener of the '80's, Dick Raymond, who wrote a book called The Joy of Gardening, is that for your new area that you plan to plant next year, it would help your soil a lot if you planted a cover crop that you could let grow and then till into the soil to help build it up and amend it naturally before you plant it with your plantings. He used things like buckwheat and winter rye, of course. You probably already know this, but I just thought it would be something that you could do now that would help your soil for next season. Sorry, if it's kind of elementary of me.....lol.

    YOU are an inspiration‼️♥️
I have a love for gardening, but my daughter grew up not caring for it ... almost to an aversion.
You both share the same home design/style/decor.
SO... with that as “a foothold, a way in”, I felt I had a good chance of gardening with my daughter if I could just get her to watch a couple of your vids; thus, before your first little one was born, I sent her a link to 2 of your “tours” - one during winter, inside and outside your home, and the other at the height of your breathtakingly beautiful spring blooming bulbs and bushes.
    SHE. WAS. HOOKED!
THANK YOU for all that you do.
Thank you for the hard work and the time spent investing in the “Seasons” of OUR lives!
    You are truly a blessing❤️

Today I am taking notes for the first time so I don't have to keep going back and searching for important information. I've been fighting for years on how/where to keep my seeds because I do start seeds in the winter. Who knew that those cool staples CD storage containers were just right. Getting some this week. I ordered several packets of zinnias (salmon rose and profusion white) and I'm just going to mass plant them next year, direct sow in the ground. I live in GA, so that usually works well for me. I'm so glad I heard you talking about seeds recently so I could order the varieties I wanted and they were still in stock!

I have recently set up an Excel spreadsheet in strict alphabetical order, exactly the same as my seeds are stored, in 2l ice-cream containers in the fridge (8 so far). The only exceptions are one container each for beans and peas and that doesn't include things like dried peas for indoor pea shoots. If you have columns for the categories you want (eg category of plant or month of sowing) you can select anything you want. I have added Sow By (on packet or estimated) so that I can see what might need to be replaced. That way I can do germination tests on old seeds before they're discarded. Most old seed will produce something, even if the germination rate is poor. I do like the CD containers, but the ice-cream containers keep out the light and the plastic doesn't become brittle in the cold of the fridge. Apart from the cost of the ice-cream, they were free.

I have already started planning for 2021! Planning, gardening & maintenance is my therapy - my husband & I have a beautiful special needs daughter who needs full time care. I am lucky that I can stay home to care for her & enjoy being with her! Hannah is mobile & only needs one medication to control seizures. She does not talk but communicates with basic sign language, pointing & bringing an object to us that tells us what she wants or needs. So gardening is my therapy, I can garden & still be close to Hannah here at home! We live on a family farm so I do have the space to do & expand my gardening therapy plus Hannah loves to ride in our tractors with her Dad when the job permits! She also loves to watch all the farm activities! Your videos have helped me improve & add to my "gardening therapy"!! Thank you!😊🚜🌹🌺🌻🌾🌿🌱❤💚

Holy cow!! I love seeing all of the variety of flowers that you will be putting in your cut garden. Which seeds are the easiest to just plant in the ground? I don't have space to start them indoors. I've been doing a lot more gardening since I started watching your videos. Love your enthusiasm!

Wonderful video Laura. I love when you share your less than successful projects. I would love to see a video covering your flowers growing out of your milk jugs, flowers still growing out of the flats, I enjoyed your macerated nasturtium seeds and empty row of amaranth. You are so knowledgeable and talented and never afraid to share your failures. They are fun for us in the real world. You make our day many days !

This was really enjoyable to watch, thank you Laura. I'm also so glad that I'm not the only one who organizes their seeds chronologically. I also separate by 'direct sow' or 'start' (indoors). For example, 'start 6 wks before last frost', 'sow 4 wks before last frost', etc.

Clearly, I need a bigger yard! Have you every tried heirloom mums? I have never been a huge fan of mums because I am only familiar with the grocery store/garden center variety that bloom profusely for a few weeks in fall and then fizzle out. BUT, I recently learned that those mums are not the only mums. There is a world of gorgeous, almost dahlia like blooms, I have never seen before. Amazing.

This video is so packed full of info but 1st thing I'll be doing is organizing! Good luck to us all in the new year and may you and baby girl have a healthy smooth happy delivery!

We have a similar setup for all our flower and vegetable seeds. We have two additional bins, one for storage of flowers that we store in the refrigerator and the second for sweet pea flower seeds, we store in the freezer. Those storage bins have improved our germination rates for flowers such as delphinium, foxglove, columbines, ammi and snapdragons. Enjoyed your video. Planning and thinking about next season is so fun.

Seed pods, branches, vegetable varieties i never knew existed for example Garlic. Never knew there were more than one kind of garlic. Anyway i just want to say thank you for opening my eyes to what has been right in front of me that i ignored before.

Oh MY Goodness, Aaron, I LOVED that version of the King and I. You rock kiddo. Laura this is the first year I've kept my tags and seed packages. I'm so glad. You are such a good influence. LOL I may progress to your system as my garden and yard projects grow. We have lived in this house for seven years. The first few years were spent taking dead trees and hedges down. CHA CHING I also put all my Garden Answer notes in a folder! This winter will go by quickly as I will start some long term planting and my "room" ideas. TY TY TY Cathy M/PA

I organize my seeds the same exact way because I'm so OCD, even down to the Flower & Vegetable Herb Bin & I separate them with cardboard too! Crazy! I thought I was extreme, but Laura, thanks for making my seed hoarding seem normal. #seedaddictsunite 😂🌱 Might be useful to you to print your Excel Spread & keep it attached in the barn somewhere because I found myself running back inside frequently, but with an updated list printed in my patio I don't have to worry anymore. That's also how I avoid buying the same thing 3 times. 😅 Cause I've done that to, too many times! Lol! 😅😅😅 Happy Planting! 🎉🌱

I also have two boxes for flowers and herbs/ veggies. I divide the boxes into the months, when they have to be seeded. when the month comes, I take all out and divide indoor and outdoor starting... Works very good for me as I'm starting similar amounts as Laura.😊

My son-in law plants the Ambrosia corn every year. He does stagger the planting so it's ready at different times and he always sells out daily! He does do it to sell and he has repeat customers every year that buy it to freeze.it is so good!

And yes, this video wasn't just interesting, it was very helpful, too.Thank you so much for sharing! Also, would love a video with your Mom making the Pumpkin Pot Pie, and the recipe of course, and you making the Garlic Cream soup, with recipe!
