I can’t believe you tried to start it with out a complete cleaning of the tank and entire fuel system first. That’s just asking for trouble, sending all the gunk through the system .
And the tank should be locked at inside to see if there’s lots of rust and varnish . It will be lots of trouble if there is and all of it isn’t cleaned out .

Other RUclipsrs have made similar videos “let’s see if it starts after so many years “ . Hopefully most that restore a bike that sat for too long are smarter than that . Impatience is not a virtue , do it right an CLEAN first . I recently did my bike that sat for 15 years and I spent a huge amount of time cleaning the tank , fuel gauge sender , rebuilt the fuel petcock and thoroughly cleaned the carbs and replacing all the rubber in them . And it does work great now , like it never was off the road .
My god!! I used to resurrect 35 year old 70's Suzukis that had sat in the garden without covers, and they used to come to life quicker and looked a lot less manky! 😞
Nice viewing. I had a very similar problem on my Honda CBR project. Thought it was rails etc. guess what causes so many problems? The fuel non return valve on the fuel pump. It will prime and stop, not because there is pressure but because the computer says stop. What happens is that with a faulty non return valve the pressure from the pump simply escapes back into the tank via the non return valve and therefore no real pressure to the injectors..I don’t think you need to remove the rails. Good luck!
Yeah l enjoyed this video it takes me back when l had a T250J in the late 70's , l am shocked that parts are not available, but l'm sure if you looked around, do they do Gaskets sheets that you can buy? I know it's more work but what is the alternative ? I ride a Suzuki GSX 1400 K8 Black , nice ride but expensive to maintain $1300 dollars for a fuel pump , gaskets, o-rings & labour. So yeah, talk soon from Sunny Melbourne Australia 🙄😮😮😮😮😮😮😁😁
Whatever you do, don't try and start it without replacing the fuel first 😮, it could have anything in it that would make it very difficult and cause damage later on.
You can strip the fuel filler cap fairly easily once it is out of the tank. Done it a few times (including the fun of getting a snapped key out of a friends RS125 many years ago). If you need to fully strip it, once the lock barrel is out you can take the cap off the top (only crimped on in a couple of places), then there is a pin you can see. Remove the pins and the wafers for the lock will come out. This way you can possibly fiddle with a replacement cap to keep a matching key.
@@stoneautomotive , probably, but if you get another cap you can hopefully strip the lock down, swap the wafers around and have it match the ignition key (if needs be , a couple of cheap caps without keys will give you enough alternative wafers - possible but not sure that caravan locks by Zadi use the same wafers)
Take you air nozzle and blow air into the lock mechanism on the fuel tank. The air will blow the penetrant deeper into the mechanism hopefully blowing out any debris.
Really appriciate these restoration videos. Nicely edit and the videoquality and the skill to fix the bike makes it a joy to watch. Looking forward to part two! Thanks and good luck! 🙂👍👍
Oh that poor starter motor!😢 As a mechanic there is no way known I would try to start a bike sitting for years (particularly outside) without doing the following first. Replace oil & filter, check/replace coolant, remove & flush tank including remove & clean out pump & filter assy(ps why not remove fuel filler/cap assy by removing the allen bolts???), remove spark plugs & crank over to check for siezure/valve problems & to ensure oil pressure, carry out compression test & fit new plugs. I always crank an unknown engine manually at first (plugs removed) by placing the bike in gear & turning the back wheel. Then if ok I will use the starter to generate oil pressure. The way you have tried to start this bike could cause irreparable damage!🇦🇺
I had that exact bike. Long gone nowbut I've still got theoriginal exhaust stashed, it's in mint condition and all wrapped up safe. If you want to put it back to stock get in touch. I remember having a big problem sourcing seals for the Brembos. Not available from Aprilia or Brembo. Tried Ducati and they weren't selling them either! There had been a law suit in America and nobody was selling seals for the goldline calipers (a home mechanic made an arse of fittting them and crashed and sued big time). KTM saved the day thank f**k and stocked them for the RC8. Phew😅 Check your 'choke' cable and lube it. Your's didn't sound like it was operating at all, it should rev really high from a cold start on fast idle. I think that is oart of your issue. Mille's always need full choke to start, unless it's totally hot after just running. AP workshop are a gift from the gods. Get to know Griff. There's upgrades needed to the shite charging/starting system. Fit their recommended up-spec battery and I'm sure the sprag (starter) clutch needs their upgrade mod too... it's a weak point on the Mille. Get read up on these points. The lack of a slipper clutch on this spec RSV makes it "interesting" 😳. Be careful. Or get yourself a slipper clutch upgrade too if possible... it honestly seriously needs it.
Thanks Tony, I don’t plan to go back to standard with the bike so wouldn’t need a standard silencer 👍 I’ve got that pleasure of finding seals currently, all part of the fun! The choke/ throttle lifter is working, injectors are also working (now looks like it could be the fuel hose in the tank reading the comments, let’s hope I can get it running in the next episode 👍
@@stoneautomotive fingers crossed for you that the previous owners addressed some of the mechanical mods for you. The stock can is an abomination but it's a must for track day use. Noise tests and RSV twins never go well, even with baffles! Look closely at the swingarm behind the exhaust can. A light drop dents or punctures the alloy swinger very easily, position the slip on clamp so it can't make contact in an impact. Way too common damage and it's MOT failure if if happens. Even if it's only dented, keep an eye out for cracking over time as it's only thin plate alloy.
No need to break the petrol tank lock. Simply undo the Allen bolts and remove the entire cap assembly, providing access to the tank, and then remove the lock barrel from the cap and soak it in evaporust or something similar.
Thanks 😎👍 I’m aware of the bolts not being decorative, but sadly you need to “unlock” the cap for you to be able to release the fuel cap (the ring will come loose but won’t allow the cap to unlock from the tank sadly)
Hello mate Fairplay to you starting a channel good stuff something to watch I thought if it had that bad fuel in it and throttle bodies have been sat for awhile they run on vacuums and they have diaphragms you may well have a split in one of the throttlebody diaphragms
IN RSv u have to replace the spark plug first and drop some engine oil into to lubricate, clean the TB.. the tank gas filter, remove the air filter n cleaned.. then u can try to give it a crank.. and dont crank too long on rsv.. u will ruined the starter aswell.. plus trying to crank in weak battery u will get many error code later on the ecu

Good luck with the restoration 👍 As you mention it’s also a satisfying hobby being in the garage with the radio on and a nice hot cuppa coffee on the go 😎
you need to flush and celan that entire fuel system, tank, pump, rails, injectors, you can hit the injectors with a 9 volt radio battery and run cleaner thru the in end, make a nice switched set up or touch wires with alligator clips.. 3-4 times an hour apart, fill injectors with cleaner in between, you prolly know this trick but someone might find it useful..
I noticed the fast idle lever ( left switch gear) is off, the starting procedure for a mille is fast idle fully on and DO NOT touch the throttle what so ever, I doubt very much you'll need to mess about with anything on the fuel injection side other than replacing the injector O rings at the spray head end, fuel pump is priming so that's good, you need a YTX 14 battery on it or you will kill the sprag, you are flooding it even looking at the throttle .... I've owned a Mille R for 14 years, also pack it in with the brake cleaner ! ! 😂😂😂 and again DON'T TOUCH THE THROTTLE ! ! 😂😂😂

Hey I really enjoyed the series, beautiful machine! Somebody is about to give me a free bike, I did not see it yet but it I am guessing it is a Yamaha FZR600 from 90s. Bike has been sitting outside for 15 years, it will be a project bike. I am assuming I need to change all the fluids, hoses, chain, sprockets, brake pads and discs, and maybe front forks, carburetor rebuild and gaskets. There might be additional costs like a faulty fuel pump or a broken radiator. The estimated cost comes to one thousand USD, it is still cheaper than buying a running bike in United States. Do you think I should do all of this just to get the bike running? I didn't see the bike but I wonder if there's a way to save brake discs with brake fluid? I'm trying to cut costs. Like I am deciding between getting a cheap chain kit for $44 or a high quality one for $162 because every little expense adds up.
Nothing better than a free bike 😎 Sadly there’s very rarely a “cheap” way of restoring an abandoned bike, as you can see from this ZXR400 there are things you can avoid but parts such as the radiator had to be changed, had no way around it sadly.. Good luck with your build 💪

I recently did my bike that sat for 15 years and I spent a huge amount of time cleaning the tank , fuel gauge sender , rebuilt the fuel petcock and thoroughly cleaned the carbs and replacing all the rubber in them . And it does work great now , like it never was off the road .
Had the same Yellow Ducati loved that thing!
They are still such stunning bikes even by todays standard 😎
Love the Italian bikes as well as some of the Japanese. The Kawasaki Ninja zx900r I had as well was a beast!@@stoneautomotive
Good luck!
Next episode live Sunday - now running! it was a fuel pump issue 😅 but not for the reason you would think!
@@stoneautomotivehaha!! Great 👍
I use AP workshops for all my parts on a gen 2 tuono factory, they’re super helpful and might have what you need 🤞

Whatever you do, don't try and start it without replacing the fuel first 😮, it could have anything in it that would make it very difficult and cause damage later on.
bit late
You can strip the fuel filler cap fairly easily once it is out of the tank. Done it a few times (including the fun of getting a snapped key out of a friends RS125 many years ago). If you need to fully strip it, once the lock barrel is out you can take the cap off the top (only crimped on in a couple of places), then there is a pin you can see. Remove the pins and the wafers for the lock will come out. This way you can possibly fiddle with a replacement cap to keep a matching key.
I think I have properly killed it drilling out the cap 😅
@@stoneautomotive , probably, but if you get another cap you can hopefully strip the lock down, swap the wafers around and have it match the ignition key (if needs be , a couple of cheap caps without keys will give you enough alternative wafers - possible but not sure that caravan locks by Zadi use the same wafers)
Great content. Im glad i gave stumbled across your channel. New subscriber right here
Glad to hear Lee 😎
Id be curious if its just priming and not running the pump constant since it starts rev then dies.
All sorted in episode 2 👍
Take you air nozzle and blow air into the lock mechanism on the fuel tank. The air will blow the penetrant deeper into the mechanism hopefully blowing out any debris.
Really appriciate these restoration videos.
Nicely edit and the videoquality and the skill to fix the bike makes it a joy to watch.
Looking forward to part two!
Thanks and good luck!

Thanks for the kind words 👍
Next episode live tonight around 6pm 😬
I find it fascinating that the brake calipers are full of dirt but the brake discs are clean AF
I believe this to be as the discs are stainless steel (it’s the only thing I can think of)
Oh that poor starter motor!😢 As a mechanic there is no way known I would try to start a bike sitting for years (particularly outside) without doing the following first.
For GODS sake it's an Aprilia, work of art.
Phew😅
Check your 'choke' cable and lube it.
Thanks Tony, I don’t plan to go back to standard with the bike so wouldn’t need a standard silencer 👍
I’ve got that pleasure of finding seals currently, all part of the fun!
Even if it's only dented, keep an eye out for cracking over time as it's only thin plate alloy.
how are you wanting for the original exhaust
No need to break the petrol tank lock. Simply undo the Allen bolts and remove the entire cap assembly, providing access to the tank, and then remove the lock barrel from the cap and soak it in evaporust or something similar.
Sadly not the case, detailed in the latest episode as I’ve been hit with that one in the comments a few times 😅
why do you try to fire it up, without changing the old oil and old gas?
Interesting and well documented. New subscriber gained 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks & welcome to the channel 😎👍
Hi, great video just a Heads up those screws on the Tank are not decoration its faster to unbolt them
Thanks 😎👍
I’m aware of the bolts not being decorative, but sadly you need to “unlock” the cap for you to be able to release the fuel cap (the ring will come loose but won’t allow the cap to unlock from the tank sadly)
Tyres look new 👍
New in tread depth but the rubber has had plenty of UV over the years in the garden 😅
My neighbour bought a repairable write off, all parts replaced its a beast

Has it got a datatool alarm fitted?
No Data tool alarm (good observation though)

Hello mate Fairplay to you starting a channel good stuff something to watch I thought if it had that bad fuel in it and throttle bodies have been sat for awhile they run on vacuums and they have diaphragms you may well have a split in one of the throttlebody diaphragms
All sorted now, was simply a fuel line that had popped off inside the fuel tank (detailed in episode 2 😎)
Lots of water on an old Italian motorcycle 😱😁
What could possibly go wrong 😅 find out Sunday!
Did you use the fast idle lever when starting the bike. Switch on left handle bar. Pull it back all the way
Yep tried that at the beginning too.. it’s pointing towards the fuel pump/ tank internal pipe work (hopefully have it running this week for episode 2)
You could have sprayed a little Quick Start into the air intake to get it to fire. Everyone has their own way I guess...
Done this towards the end of the video 😬
What a find pease treat it with a lot of respect.
Legend, great video
Cheers Jimmy 👍😎

@@Jimmyboypepsimax I hope so haha
IN RSv u have to replace the spark plug first and drop some engine oil into to lubricate, clean the TB.. the tank gas filter, remove the air filter n cleaned.. then u can try to give it a crank.. and dont crank too long on rsv.. u will ruined the starter aswell.. plus trying to crank in weak battery u will get many error code later on the ecu

@stoneautomotive I'd drive past 3 petrol stations just to get vpower, its a bit stupid but cars bikes etc run some much better than on the dogs**t from supermarkets might be worth looking at the fuel filter on the aprilia. I don't understand why you don't remove the whole fuel cap assembly from the top of the tank?
It’s not possible, even with all the Allen keys removed it will still be held by the lock
The fuel cap will come off in one piece if you remove the six bolts holding it on, then just put a new cap on.
Sadly not.. security bolt under the cap - detailed in the re-spray video as so many said the same so had to put it to bed 😅

Good luck with the restoration 👍
As you mention it’s also a satisfying hobby being in the garage with the radio on and a nice hot cuppa coffee on the go 😎
Greetings from Poland😊
👍👋
you need to flush and celan that entire fuel system, tank, pump, rails, injectors, you can hit the injectors with a 9 volt radio battery and run cleaner thru the in end, make a nice switched set up or touch wires with alligator clips.. 3-4 times an hour apart, fill injectors with cleaner in between, you prolly know this trick but someone might find it useful..
Starts like every rsv mille 😀
😅😭
I had tried the fast idler in the start with no joy… good news she is running, stay tuned for tomorrows video 😬

Nothing better than a free bike 😎
Sadly there’s very rarely a “cheap” way of restoring an abandoned bike, as you can see from this ZXR400 there are things you can avoid but parts such as the radiator had to be changed, had no way around it sadly..
Good luck with your build 💪
Appreciate the response 🙌🏻
@@stoneautomotive things worked out differently. I bought a 2012 CBR250R with 9k miles for $1450. It’s converted to a naked bike and in perfect condition very well taken care of. It was a steal, couldn’t say no!
