if anyone is watching in 2021 I just went thru this, basically same as 2005 santa fe..was my 1st time working on this engine .When I took my spark plugs out I noticed a lot of oil in the spark plug tube on a few cylinders as well as coating the top of the spark plugs... but put it all back together and it ran great. After a lil research, I realized I have to all this over again, and more, to replace valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals! So if anyone is watching, make note of that so you only have to do the part in this video Once! LOL Oh, the original issue was #3 misfire so I replaced spark plugs, plug wires, and fuel injector...ran great like I said but I am sure the problem will return so tomorrow I get to ahve even More fun! Good vid Rex!
Thank you Alan. Yeah people still have these cars as well. The average age of vehicle on the road as a daily driver today is over 15 years old. I did alot with this car, even replaced the transmission solenoids once and it totalled when I hit a deer on the highway. But out of all the vehicles I owned, this one was definitely one of the worst when it came down to changing spark plugs lol. And to the beginning part, I average about 1500 views a month on this video so some people are still watching lol. Going to pin this comment because it's got some very helpful tips! Keep up your grind in the daily life and I wish you all the best!
FYI it's the same as the Santa Fe, Azera/Grandeur, and Trajet of the same era. I have a 2002 trajet (van) and noticed this when changing the oil. Fortunately the dealer had new plugs and leads put on. But the pipe between the rocker covers on your left there was held on with zip ties. I went to put hose clamps on to find that the hose was gummy bears. So got another oil and heat resistant hose from engineering supplies this morning. Dumbass at hyundai parts had to get on the computer to even work out what filter it took. Regardless of it being one of their main engines of the early 2000s.
hi i have 2001 sanata the coil pack plug connector is broken need to now how to pulg it back. to an aftermarket coilpack, plug wireing is different in plug an color
I have a 2005 hyundai sonata v6 2.7l and did the spark plugs wires and coil pack now it has different wires and the pig tail on female side when I took the plug out so now I have 4 pin wire and don't know what wire goes with what coil pack have Red wire black wire black with blue strip and black with white strip and the harnesses it's orange , yellow ,pink and red wire
That makes absolutely 0 sense to me. I'm sorry but I only got the chance to own this car for 1 year and then it was totalled by a dear. If you changed your plugs and coil packs, and you still have a problem, then you likely need a new heater kit (don't know the technical term but its the box the wires go into that send the spark to the coil packs before the spark to the plug). If you have too many wires, it's likely you got the wrong wiring harness? Those would be just two potential fixes to attempt to fix your issue but I don't fully understand your issue
When you replaced the plenum gasket , did you have to use any sort of gasket sealer or did you just put the new one on? I have a 2002 Sonata GLS that needs new plugs and wires . The engine and set up is identical to this . All the videos that I have seen has not shown the plenum gasket replacement , so I was curious. Great Video , very helpful.
Plenum? That's a word I don't know, however I didn't replace my intake gasket or the small one near the air intake. I used the old ones because they looked rather new and had no damage and I didn't use any gasket sealer in fears of clogging my engine if I made a mistake. A new gasket should do just fine.
Thanks a Bunch , the Plenum is another name for the intake . Thanks a lot Man , I am planning on doing this next weekend . My Car is do for some new plugs and wires. I bought a new plenum gasket( intake gasket )to put on the car . I appreciate it
I haven't replaced the valve cover gasket however I know you use the exact same tools to get past the rear firewall and it should be a 10mm socket maybe an 8mm at the smallest
How do you take the ones in the front off? Can you just pull them off? I wanted to take mine off the check them but idk if that’s possible to just pull them off without damaging them
So the front you unscrew the wires (there should be a bolt at each one) and then just pull it out. Then you use the spark plug removal piece that comes in every wrench/ratchet set to unscrew and remove the sparkplugs.
It does appear that my memory may fail me, haven't had this car for 4 years or so, totalled it hitting a deer. If there isn't bolts on the sparkplug wires, then it's just a matter of popping them out
Thanks for the sonata video. Question for you, did you see any other places where a temp sensor is attached to the cylinder head. I already replaced the one underneath the upper radiator hose near the thermostat housing. Unfortunately that didn't fix my problem of my radiator fan not coming on. Wondering if there is another sensor/switch somewhere that turns on the fan.
R3X The Gamer thanks for the info. all the fuses and relays checked out, plus i can run the fan if I hook it straight to the battery so fan motors are good. I'll take a better look around tomorrow. thanks for your help
I never did find a seperate temp sensor, just the main one by the thermostat housing. Long story short, my fan comes on now. I don't think I was getting the engine hot enough when I was checking to see if it was coming on. thought I could get it to come on by turning on the A/C, but forgot my A/C hasn't worked for a decade or more.
@@davidhamilton9531 btw I don't know what my last reply to this was, however I wanted to say if the engine isn't getting hot enough you probably have an open thermostat (change it). Just wanted to re-reply in case any other viewers have this same issue.
That's the same reason for the engine code that I had on mine. It said it was a misfire in cylinder 4 which the first fix is always changing the plugs, if that doesn't fix it then changing the wires will fix it!
@@TheOnlyR3X I am very sorry to hear that...did you keep the car...and sell out the parts"? If so I might need something, the ignition pack coil set...

So, I just changed the spark plugs and wires on my 2002 Hyundai sonata, and now the car makes a sound like popcorn popping when I start it. Any ideas what this could be and how to fix it?
Wondering about the transmission speed sensor(s)??? Any info would help...I'm getting a p0715 error code...most likely speed sensor in the trans...however I don't know where these sensors are located...anyone know before I go digging around?
Hey, sorry for the late response, no idea why I didn't get any notifications for most of these comments, however I did not have this vehicle for very long so I never did get to the point of changing the idler pulley, but also the idler pulley is just behind the tensioner on the left hand side and which you have to have socket wrench 2 call the tensioner to loosen the tension on the belt to be able to remove the belts before you even start working on the idler pulley.
