Hyundai Kia V6 3.3L Spark Plug Ignition Tune Up How To

- The Hyundai Kia lineup with a 3.3L V6 are all pretty much the same design. When doing a spark plug change the three front bank plugs are very easy to access. The back three spark plugs require the intake to be removed. Hyundai calls this a "surge tank". Removal takes more than a few steps to gain access to the plugs but isn't that complicated. Ozzstar shows how to do the job with all the details necessary that you will need to fix your car. Thanks for stopping by the Ozzstar's Cars channel. -Glen

JUST got back from doing some laps after tackling this job. Decided to do this after having some intermitent rough starts. The dealership told me there was some misfiring at startup, so sparks was a good place to start to try and fix it. We'll see if that ended up being the cause...but time will tell there. Followed you step by step, and aside from some stubborn connectors, i had no major issues, and everyting went smooth. Took me 5hrs, but it was a great learning experience, and i saved $500. No codes, car seems to run normally, so knock on wood... all is well. Thanks so much for posting this video.
A tip for anyone doing this, remove that bolt at the rear of the surge tank FIRST! Not after you get everything else disconnected and realize its rusted tight and beyond your ability to break loose.
Good advice about using a new gasket. I know some shops that will try to cut corners and save a few bucks by using the old one.
We know how that game is played. Thanks Jim.
Thanks for the vid. Got it done in about an hour and a half, all the tips and tricks were super helpful. Saved a couple hundred bucks. Going to take my family out for a nice dinner with my savings!
Nice! Can I join you? I'm a foodie.
You made that look easy and go quickly Glen, nice work !
Piece of cake Lloyd, 45 min job when not filming.
Hey Glen! Never got a notification on this video and only found it when I went to your channel. Nice tool from Gearwrench as I never seen it before. Nice work with the job as always and have a great day! 😀👍
Thanks Terry. That little ratchet is handy and also comes in 1/4" drive. I was headed out of the big box store and bought it last minute. It was new to me as well and caught my attention. Take care and stay well.
Amazing detailed video ! I followed along and paused and did everything you said , worked amazing and my wife was so turned on that I fixed the car , thanks bro !
Nice Rix, looks like you'll be getting lucky with the wife if your lucky. haha 👍 I've fixed over 300 vehicles on RUclips alone, imagine how busy my wife keeps me. lol
I am noticing a knocking sound when rpm up to 2000 , the sound wasn't there before I changed the spark plugs , it is also low on oil so hopefully once I fill that the sound goes away
Thanks for the video. I have a 2016 Kia Sedona 3.3. I’ve asked 2 actual pro mechanics to do this job for me and they both didn’t want to. I followed your video and got it done today in 3.5 hours. I took my time and that time included a trip to auto parts store nearby and lunch. Got a check engine light when I cranked it up cuz I forgot to connect the throttle body plug. Not too bad. 2 things you didn’t mention not sure if yours was different but there was a bracket behind the manifold that was holding an oil or ac line that I had to take off to get the manifold out. Also the new coils were slightly different than the stock ones in then van. I got OEM exact part numbers but I had to the coil plug connect because it was inverted 180 deg. Not a big deal but just thought I’d mention it. Thank you so much. I’ve been wanting to get this done for a while.
You're welcome Joe.
Awesome video. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Dealership just quoted me $635 for this job and $446 for front brake job. Saving $1k feels good when you can do those jobs yourself in a couple hours. Thanks for the great video. There's not a ton of Azera content on the Tube.
Save a small fortune! Nice
Thanks for the video Glenn.
I appreciate you stopping by Glen, thanks! -Glen
Thanks, excellent explanation with clear video and tips! I’ll be doing my Sorento now.
It'll be gravy now that you watched the video!
Thank you very much for making this video sir! You saved me a ton of money. Well done

Matching head to toe, and your whip! Blue everywhere.... my favorite color. On to the vid.
Yup Cuba I kind of like blue too.👍
Great job with the video, was very helpful with my repair.
Excellent MG!
Awesome video, just did my spark plugs in a 2017 Sante Fe Xl with the 3.3l V6 Lamda, took about 3 hours which is not too bad I thought. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Glad the video helped. I bet you could knock the job out in 1.5 hours next time?
@@ozzstars_cars Oh yeah, easily!
Awesome vid,,,saved me $ 500 at the garage....thanks again for the educated vid
You're welcome Ron. The tip jar is open. Haha!
Peace of cake, thank you 🙏
I bet it's a $500 bill from the dealer doing that job. Well worth doing it yourself . 👍
At least I have beer money now. haha
Dealer wants to charge $650- so here I am....
@@AshleyFoltz You came to the right channel , Glen's videos save me money too. Good for you doing it yourself 👍

@@ozzstars_cars great video, you slayed me at 10:25🤣🤣
Really well done buddy!
Thank you
Thank you sir! I appreciate the step by step.

Nice video, explained well, thank you. I'm about to do this to my daughter's car. There's a misfire on cylinder 3. I'm hoping it's just the spark plug.
DEAR SIR, YOU ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE AND WELL ORGANDIZESD BEYOUND WORDS DESCRIPTION.THANKS

Thanks. Your video helped alot
Great news!
Great video.
Thanks!
Sound advice!
Thanks for sharing this with us. Much appreciated. I have to do this to my 3.3 in a 2015 Kia. However, it just picked up that dreaded timing chain tensioner rattle that I am going to have to deal with now as well. The car is still in 100% pristine condition. The engine, obviously not so much sadly enough.
Thanks again!
Oh and Kia books that very same job you just did at 3 hours!
The timing chain tensioner rattle. Car has 150k miles and does this at start up with no other problems. One of these days it will be replaced. 😁
Thanks you did a great job explaining everything
Thanks for the comment.
You the man! Thanks a ton
Appreciate that. 👍
Great video. Thanks
You got it Nick! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the detailed video.
Just done mine. Saved myself like 650 $ Cad. Local dealer quoted this job at 762$🤒
Nice work with the fix!
Thanks!
You got it Dee!
Good vid🔥
Yamaha tuning forks. 👍
Very nice video and well explained! Unfortunately I couldn't remove the screw at the back so I had to reconnect all the hoses and guess what, the engine check-in light is on , do you know why ??
It's a bolt back there and you left something unplugged. Check again.
Excellent video for a do it yourselfer. While the plugs were out it would have been nice to see the carbon buildup on the intake valves using a borescope
For 115k miles not bad at all. Minor carbon, this car has had regular oil changes and well maintained.
Hey buddy nice information. I have a hyundai veracruz i would like to have my sparks plug change and engine valve gasket set to replaced . How many hours of labour will this car take? Intake manifold gasket and valve cover gasket .
Got a quote for a tad over $500 from the sho and dealership, had the spark plugs sitting in my garage and the gasket for a while, just gotta plan for a day to do if. Bank 2 is done already at least
Looks like i am going to have fun with this one.
It's not really that hard if you have the tools and knowledge. Take your time.
Hi Ozzstar, thank you for your super detailed video. I looked at your Amazon list and was wondering what torque wrench do you prefer? Thank you.
I prefer to use my GearWrench digital torque wrench when I can. The 3/8" I own is very handy amzn.to/41yPR0x There is also a 1/4" model for smaller fastners but I use a mechanical Husky brand for that. Thanks for your comment!
Nice video! Just wondering what you used when broke the torque on that back bolt, and how you did it. Also, how you torqued it back on as well. Would’ve been nice to have that included in the video. Thanks!
I snuck a 3/8" drive flex head ratchet and socket back there. Had no way to film it by myself. Thanks for stopping by the channel. -Glen
I broke the torque just my using my tiny 1/4 inch ratchet.
Great video, especially the torque figures.
Have you done a video on how to check the coil adaptors?
Would be nice to know other than swapping them around to isolate faults.
To find misfires I use a scan tool and sometimes an oscilloscope.
@@ozzstars_cars I use an oscilloscope too, but on aircraft. Cars are getting far too technical these days. It used to be so easy.. great video sir, you take care.
@@jameskirk578 thanks James 👍
Nice video, thanks for posting...What are your thoughts on installing an oil catch can? Do you think its necessary? I have a 2014 Santa Fe 3.3. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Randy, to be honest I believe an oil catch can for that car is a waste of time and money. It is totally uncessary and no advantage to gain.
Thanks for the video. I have a 2017 Sedona which I'm going to do this on soon. I think your video and torques will really help.
Question: Other parts to change while the surge tank is off? I'm wondering about like a PCV valve buried in there? I like your gasket suggestion - will get a new one too.
Just saw your PCV vid so that answered my question!🙂
@Dan Morgan the mystery is solved. haha Good luck Dan with the tune-up!
Nice video bro. Followed everything step by step and finished up. But now it’s making a loud whistling noise. I’ve checked all my connectors, bolts, battery. Have any idea what it could be?? The noise is coming from under the cover from the spark plugs. Thanks
Could be a disconnected hose.
The nut next to the filter is stuck to the bolt and both are spinning together for me. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much, that was super helpful, I plan to change the plugs on my 2018 Kia Sorento 3.3L this weekend. I will let you know how it goes. Worried the most about that back bolt, I don't have one of those Gimbals
That bolt is very tight. You can sneak a 3/8 ratchet to break the torque, then back it out with 1/4 drive which will give you more room. The gimbal is convenient but not necessary.
I managed with just a 3/8" ratchet.
@@spiralnapkin it's not that hard right?
Went smoothly, the back bolt was not hard at all. I got nervous putting it back in as it didn't seed until the other bolts were tighter and I was able to put it in last.
Appreciate the help, Car runs great. My only question would be the old gasket had a little oil on it on one of the sections, not a lot but a bit and wondered if that was normal. I put a new gasket in it.
@@ozzstars_cars no, not hard at all.
How can we know for certain that the coils are all good? If I need to replace one I sure would like to know while I have this all apart.
I use a labscope. If there is a misfire then I would replace all three in the back while the intake is off.
Awesoem tutorial. Have you ever done a timing cover gasket on this engine?
No but I will be soon. The car needs a timing chain tensioner.
@@ozzstars_cars okay. I’m going to have to pull the timing cover on my wife’s car. I considered just going ahead and changing the tensioners while it’s off but I don’t think I will. 5 yrs ago I totally would have but with how hard it’s been getting good parts the last year, I think I’m going to leave them alone.
I’ve gotten spoiled turning wrenches on my gm truck haha
It’s hard to find stuff for this little car
@@e.s.l5861 depending on the mileage you may want to swap out the water pump while you are there. I go OEM on all that stuff.
@@ozzstars_cars yeah, normally I would as the car has 92,000. I just have had such an issue getting good parts, even OEM lately, I do hesitate
Hello! Very helpful video, good job. Need to do this job soon. I have couple of questions: 1- have you had a rough start-up that then just smooth out after a few seconds? Do you know what that could be? 2- I get like a pressure relieving sound when stopping, I replaced the PCV valve a while ago, don’t know if this might be causing that.
Yes the rough idle at startup is common. At one point years ago Hyundai has a software update but I believe it is due to carbon buildup on that back of the valves. This happens on high mileage vehicles. What mileage does your car have?
@@ozzstars_cars over 97k.
You did an excellent job in teaching and clarity. Have you ever considered being a Auto teacher at a college or Technical School?
Interesting that you mention that. Yes I actually have considered it. Thanks for the comment Truth and your good observation. 👍
Thank you. I’ve got a 2018 Kia Sedona that’s coming up to 60k miles on it. Kia says at 60k replace the coolant, spark plugs, and fuel filter.
Coolant? Easy peasy.
I wasn’t sure about the spark plugs but after seeing this video it seems…. Possible. I’ve done belts, water pumps, and alternators on other cars. These rear plugs look like a PITA though.
The fuel filter? Forget it. Gotta Pull the entire pump out the back the car? I’ll pay someone thanks.
Do you think the fuel filter and plugs really need service at only 60k miles? I’m hoping to get some Toyota like lifespan out of this Kia since van prices are astronomical right now.
Most Kia Hyundai spark plugs are 105k service. Coolant is usually good for that as well.
Part # on the gasket?
My 2017 Kia Sorento has the same engine with 72K miles. My oil pressure sensor is going bad. You have to take the fuel injection rails off and remove a plastic cover to get to it. Any advice on removing the fuel injection rails? I might as well replace the plugs and 3 of the coils while a have all this taken apart. Thanks for advice.
Why are you replacing the coils? They usually go bad due to worn out spark plugs. Release fuel rail pressure before removal.
@@ozzstars_cars Reliability, I don't want to do this again for a bad coil. I read their might soon be a recall for the oil pressure sensor problem. I will wait till spring for it to warm up and monitor it closely. I have not yet figured out how to release the fuel pressure. I normally would pull the fuse on the fuel pump and crank the engine over a few times after it dies. These GDI engines have two fuel pumps. I am wondering if they are on separate fuses.
My 3.3l doesn't have thr plastic manifold its all aluminum under the beauty cover. Very good explanation. I did my front 3 plugs in about 10 minutes total but the rear 3 are a little bit of a pain in the ass.
Hyundai/Kia doesn't make it easy John. In my 4th generation Maxima 3.0L V6, the back plugs take 10 mins, front took 5 mins to swap out. Go figure.
@Ozzstar's Cars I inherited my sante fe from my dad who inherited it from my grandpa who bought it new 3 years before he died in 2010 so I'm far too emotionally invested in the car to sell it. Otherwise it wouldve been sold immediately after i got it lol. I'm definitely not exactly impressed by Hyundai and I personally would NEVER buy one.
@@ozzstars_cars honestly bro, hyundai is just a garbage company in general imo
@Ozzstar's Cars I should've replaced all the coils too while I had the manifold off in hindsight.
Nice video, can you fix the spark plug in the description. Should be NGK SILZKR7B11 instead of the NGK SILKAR7B11 as posted.
Thank you for the correction.
At minute 9:11 there was a small hose that you removed. To the left of that hose was an electrical plug with a blue clip. How did you remove that electrical plug?
Hyundai connectors can be very stubborn to remove. Take a thin pick and pop the blue tab up about 1/8 of an inch, then squeeze the connector tab very hard and pull hard, she'll pop off. Good luck Jon.
So how long timewise with an experienced & or veteran technician, whether at a Hyundai or Kia dealership etc. to replace all 6 sparkplugs for the 3.3L,?
1.5 hours, most will charge 2.2.
what is the torque specs for the surge tank, its plastic, I can only find the specs for the older metal one and I'm sure its not 50 - 80 lbs
Intake manifold torque is 2-3 ugga duggas.
I gotta take mine off to get the Timing vvt out funfun
Takes just a few minutes, right?
I have a 2015 Kia Sedona. Well the wife does. went to life and remove the surge tank to find another rather large hose connected in the back that i struggle to get at. I'm giving up. I can't get that back bolt seated correctly to thread. What an afternoon!
Are you installing the intake? Start that back bolt a few threads in then tighten the other intake bolts, tighten the back bolt last.
@@ozzstars_cars yup. That's what I been going at for an hour trying to thread it in 😂😂
@@ozzstars_cars Thanks. I got it back in. I got some help from my neighbor. I only wish that after that I could of replaced the back spark plugs.
@@ozzstars_cars Hopefully some people read this. I dug into this further and found out there are two bolts securing the power steering pressure hose in the back. That's what was holding it back. Perhaps it will be a task for a different week.
"Put it in dry"
Seriously, great video. Thanks bud
😄😉
If Hyundai would put their engines in pointing the right way it would be easier to reach stuff, Dang . The rubber fell out of my spark plug socket, I have a chunk of gas line hose to slip over the top of the plug then can put it down the hole and get the plug started .Then pull the hose off and tighten her up .
Good trick Mike, I've used that one before too. They only missed the engine angle by 90°. 😄
Actually they can (and do) block half the coils with the intake manifold on their RWD cars as well.
Have a v6 Stinger; the OEM shop manual has you removing the intake as well to do a spark plug change. Fortunately the community figured out that with the right combination of wobble/rotating sockets and with disassembling the coils there is JUST enough room to get the plugs out without removing the intake!
You can use an old spark plug wire to distributer to pull out the spark plug out of the hole ...maybe called a boot
Do you know where the oil pressure sensor is on a 2019 kia sorento
What engine size?
@@ozzstars_cars v6
@@npc-david5221 the oil pressure sensor is located under the intake manifold next to the engine coolant delivery pipe. The best test location is at the 4 pin connector near the engine fill cap.
I've got oil in my plenum too. Looks like yours. Is that not a worry?
Normal for the mileage.
@@ozzstars_cars ok great. My heart skipped a beat when I took the top of the plenum off. Hey, thanks for posting this! I followed it step by step and got it done, no problem!

@@spiralnapkin that 10 mm always disappearing! 😂😂😂
Why did you not use anti seize on the plugs?
NO anti-sneeze ever on NGK plug threads because of the special coating that is applied. No using antiseize prevents over torquing.

Easy moneyyyyyyyy!
My coils and plugs have to be done when I get home
Coils are shot? Worn out spark plugs can cause excessive backfeed voltage to possibly destroy coils.
