While sailing with Hamish, in the sounds, I told him about a man, living in Bluff, Stoney Bourke.
Stoney is building a Double Hulled Voyaging Waka.
It's a James Wharrem Design called Pahi 63, James studied pacific voyaging craft in museums and came up with this design.
    www.wharram.co...
Soon after returning home from the Picton trip, I got word that Hamish was on his way down to meet Stoney and have a look at his magnificent voyaging waka.
Stoney shared the story of the waka and how it came about. It's a story that reaches back 2000 years and more. Stoney spoke of ancient wisdom and Wiataha lore, more than one video could possibly tell.
This is the Story of Stoney's waka and introducing Hamish to that story.
Hamish went home tasked with carving 12 faces, 6 male and 6 female, to go on the ends of the 6 cross beams.
    Enjoy

I bought the plan set for a pahi 63. Back in 2000.I had big dreams. I was a surfboard manufacturer and put up a 70 foot tent in my back yard behind my surfboard factory. I bought all the tools and plywood. Plans on the wall. But then i got tendonitis in my wrist and i could not work for a year. My hand was dead for 6 months. So i sold everything at 6 months. I lost my money and dream. But i bought a tayana 37 and 6 months later i started the circumnavigation. Never looked back.

It’s a great story to tell, I’ll be doing more videos with Stoney. I’m hoping to get interest in his project, I couldn’t think of anything better than Stoney seeing his waka fly :)

I can see this project DESERVES some kind of Trust, for not only for completing , but eventual running/sailing/teaching/managing. Hope it works out for Stony Bourke and all those volunteers.. Well well worth it.

Wishing you all the best. I sailed with James and Hanneke up the Qld coast in Gaia in 97. I'm now 75 and you reach a point in life where you don't want to mix any more glue!

Thank you Mike, I can understand not wanting to mix glue anymore. I really hope Stoney gets to see his Waka on the water, I would mean so much to him.

Very well done video. Thanks, I’ve shared it on with a few folks. This boat needs finishing. In 1969-70 I sailed a James Wharram Catamaran from California to Panama.

Wow, what an adventure sailing with James. I agree the Waka needs to be completed but without some funding I doubt it will. It's a beautiful vessel that deserves to be on the water :)

Surprised to see him referring to imperial measurements. Excellent video

The plans may have been in imperial, James Wharram was English. Stoney probably prefers it anyway :)
