Thank you, John for this follow up. I only learned of Stoney Bourke this morning in your previous video. What an incredible story. If I understood correctly, Stoney is 2 or 3 years younger than me. As some might say, he and I are getting up there in age. Stoney's determination and resilience is truly amazing. Having built two Wharram designs previously, I am currently eight months into my third sailboat build, planning for a launch in the next 3 months. To maintain the resolve to continue building for 29 years is difficult to imagine. Big respect for Stoney. Big thanks for all who have assisted him in the past. Big prayers that the elements will come together to enable and ensure a successful launch of Stoney's dream. Aho.

Stoney has a vision to help disenfranchised children find new meaning in their lives. He wanted to teach them with an “Outward Bound” style experience but with traditional Waitaha knowledge and technology. A very noble dream that may never be realised.

What an amazing man and vision. Thanks for sharing. Considering how little room it seemed to take up in that huge storage unit, it's a real shame the company wanted it out for just some politicians visit. Once again the priorities are screwed up in this world! Sending Big Love to all involved.

The reason Stoney had to remove the Waka from the shed was because the whole space was being repurposed. The company was very generous letting Stoney use the space for as long as they did. Stoney packed up and got the hulls outside but had to move them, from there, for the visiting politicians.
There is no right or wrong with what’s happening with the project. Stoney if incredibly grateful for the support everyone has given him, including the company and the use of their space.
This is a heart breaking story and I’m hoping a way forward can be found.
Thank you so much for your love and compassion, it really helps 😀

@@EStartelevision Thanks for your reply if only I was rich! Stoney did say he was very grateful for the company providing the space 👍 I just assumed It was having to be moved purely for the purpose of some politicians visit and not because it was getting repurposed also, and would hate to think of it getting damaged out in the elements! Thanks for setting me straight, and thanks again for sharing this. Hopefully someone with deep pockets sees this and hears of Stoney's vision and can help realise his dreams. He really does seem like a wonderful man with so much gratitude for all the support and help with this project over the years. Much love to you all 😀

@@WolfFlow38 I wish I have the financial means as well.
Its a long shot that my little channel could help but I have to try.
Stoney is an incredible man and his Waka would be a huge asset to any coastal town or city. I'm a little surprised Bluff and Invercargill haven't realised this and assisted in it's completion .
We can only play the hand we're given.
Thanks again for your love and kind words 😀

Put it in the water were it belongs, this will never go sitting in a shed . There is a chapter in the grapes of wrath in which the local folk stick barnacles to the hull of a boat that has been " In build " for years with no sign of a launch date !

Hi Stoney, I've been following your story a while and am also a fellow Pahi owner. I restored and am now sailing a Pahi 31 that had by lying on the hard for 20 years in Kawhia.
I'm a little worried about storing your waka with just plastic sheets over it, my little pahi had plastic over it like that and it protects if from the rain but not condensation, this resulted in some rot! Tunnel houses should be good though! Probably okay a little while though. Are the hulls sealed? or is it still bare plywood?
I've also noticed a strong resemblance in the pahi to Hōkūleʻa, which launched 1975, then the pahi prototype was 1978. Has the same manu, and in the plans is shown with the same colour scheme, a lighter colour in the top half of the hulls. The wharram pahi was also originally drawn with an unusual bermudian main sail with a upward pointing boom. (mine still has this) some of the waka associated with Hōkūleʻa also have this. I suspect it's intended to make the bermudian main more like a crab claw?

Hi Dominic, It's John here. Stoney isn't online, I'll pass your comments onto him.
He is aware of the problems with how the hulls are stored but circumstances have severely limited his options.
Stoney needs help with this project and that's why I'm doing these videos. I'm hoping someone with means will see the urgency of Stoney's plight.
How beautiful it would be for Stony to see his Waka in the water and not be abandoned to the weather.

I agree, there has been very little actual work done on the Waka but I believe a trust has been formed and agreements made to get the project finished. I will try to get more information but the situation has become a little unclear for now.

So if I understand it right he and his wife startet in 1993 they put about 200’000 in the boat with also a lot of helpers and now it should need 30’000 to finish under his supervision.
That schools be able to be done if you guys startet a crowd funding with friends and potential cruisers!

    • @EStartelevision
      @EStartelevision  Год назад +1

Stoney needed a team of people to help with funding and coordination but this didn’t really happen. Stoney’s son has taken over the building of the Waka, it’s unsure what the goal of the project is now. The school idea may well have died but time will tell.
Progress will continue when the weather has improved, I’ll try and get an update as soon as I am able 😀
