Note to Scott: The Liberal Party of yore is dead. It was a partnership of the two language groups that rotated the top office, and who always had a deputy leader from the other side. There was more to it than that, but Pierre felt he didn't need that because he was fluent in both languages. The current path has lost this function. Now it is only a group of opportunists who think they know how to save the world.

Thank you for raising the Liberal tradition of alternating anglophone and francophone leadership. Since Wilfrid Laurier in 1887, every permanent leader has conformed to that pattern. Joly and Champagne would be unwise to run this time. LeBlanc already made the right choice.

When smart people talk, even though they are from the "opposing side", something can be learned. What exactly is bad about having caucus choose the leader? That's the way Westminster style parliaments are intended to work! It's needed to balance power between the leader, the cabinet and backbenchers. Without it, the leader is under no obligation to persuade caucus members to support their policies, and it directly leads to increasing centralization of power in the PMO. This is exactly what's gone wrong with LPC politics.

It might be strange, but I've upvoted all three previous posts. There are good arguments on both sides.
Australia and New Zealand are caucus-only countries, but factionalism is rife and leaders can be replaced instantly. A while back, the Northern Territory Chief Minister was travelling overseas when his colleagues rolled him. The basic problem with caucus-only is that voters choose a party with a particular person as its leader, but then don't get that leadership. Also, why become a party member if membership does not have a vote in picking a leader?

And if they have a problem with it, that candidate will have to say "Do you want to be right or do you want to win?")

I still love Carly Simon. She helped me survive my teen years. I'm now age 65. I like the manliness of Pierre Poilievre. I'm sick of feminine men. Compare Trudeau's evident weakness and tentative speech patterns to Pierre Poilievre's clarity and directness. I prefer to know where a person stands because then I know where I stand in relation to them.

Having the LPC change its rules on voting in leadership elections is not the right solution to the issue of foreign interference. There needs to be legislation to require voters in political leadership elections to be eligible to vote in Canadian federal elections. Australia has equivalent legislation, and it should be adopted here.
I understand the desire to allow political parties to run their own affairs in their own way. But sometimes that can lead to outcomes which can damage interests of Canadians. LPC rules on leadership votes, and the constutional changes which made it impossible to rid themselves of their leader are good examples, and they should be prohibited by law.

@@stratford374 I hope that as Canadians, they would want what's best for Canada. Trudeau has trashed the historically honourable brand of the Liberal Party, soiled it in corruption and Cultural Revolution ideology. What's best for Canada would be a 1993-style defeat, followed by a merger with sensible and soft left elements of the NDP. The new force should be called the Progressives. The tankie left and Greens could combine into a small but CBC-loved party.

Very interesting punditry. Looking forward to the world's quickest leadership race to see what happens.
While I freely admit I am not a Conservative supporter I am going to call out Kory on something I found a little jarring. In discussing possible Liberal leader candidates he described Minister Champagne as "bubbles" instead of his name a number of times. He then described him, Champagne, as a short man wearing lifts, in a somewhat belittling manner. However l later in the pod someone referred to Poilievre's man girdle or whatever you call that thing he wears across his chest and Kory tried to insist those were real muscles. (I suppose the photo-shopped biceps are real too). I found his reaction a little bit like Poilievre himself. He can dish it out but can't take it. (Also I don't think Champagne needs thousands of dollars in a so called makeover!)
BTW being short never seemed to bother Napolean. Just sayin'
