  • A simple quest for a cold drink in the Namib Desert turns into a bad day at the office!
Will the river gods of Africa spare me and the Land Rover, or will we both be swept away in another flash flood?
This is the story of a year long LD stay in Namibia..... with you in the passenger seat!

Here in the states we have a saying for off-roaders. Four wheel drive will get you stuck 10 ft farther than two wheel drive! Great show Big D!

I've found the biggest cause of getting stuck is driver ego or laziness 😂🤣🤣🤣🤪😜

Great content Darrin, this reminds me of getting stuck on a muddy beach for two days in Spain, got rescued by a road crew with a jcb.

Unfortunately it was mid winter and really cold and wet. It took me hours to get the clay mud out of my waffle boards HAHA, happy days.

Bit of a bugger ! Desert rivers and flash 'flooding' can play havoc with your plans. Upside is that only very rarely is there a vehicle fatality, although I know of Unimogs who did not make it.
Nevertheless, you have the right approach, no panicking - cup of tea (I prefer a beer) and 99% of the time a way out is at hand. Best !!

Thanks Henry! Please see Episode #7 for when the real flooding arrived a few days later....

Just like with sand, crossing rivers with a mix of sediment and lots of small rocks and pebbles, deflate tyres to get more floatation on the pebbles. Btw, know the kaokoveld very well, spend almost a year at Ses fontein

    • @roamingyak
      @roamingyak  Год назад +2

Or in other words, don't be a lazy sod like I was on that day ;-p
Not the worst place to be for a year...

Another tip when stuck. Do not try and lift the body of the car, if like in the landrover case with solid rims, tie a loop with good size rope, to fit around about quarter of the tire, put vehicle in 4x4 and apply handbrake to prevent tires from turning when lifting it up with the loop fitted around them and lift the axle with the high lift jack, then place the sand boards under the tire. Do this with both sides or all four if you have 4 and try to drive it out slowly. If not, do this with each tire, place good size rocks under the tires to lift the chassis out of the mud, then pull with another vehicle.

@@roamingyak did you think about piling rocks just on the up stream side of the Rover to stop the sand piling up and further covering the Rover

It would be pretty hard to make a water proof dam in the middle of a running river wouldn't it?

So you are stuck in the desert all by yourself, waiting for the flood to come and yet you still seem so relaxed?? 😮 cool video! Makes me want to drive back to Africa again!

Thanks for the comment and kind words Michiel - it's also really nice to hear what people take away from my films as well.
After 7 years driving around Africa not much surprises you anymore to be honest... another day on the road, another situation to get through, around or over. Good, bad or indifferent, something will happen to change things...
That said, a little bit of controlled panic is good, it gets you focused on a solution ;-)

no disrespect, but I see you have road tires, maybe BF Goodrich AT would have faired better. As they say, "if you want to go to the bush, take a landy, if u want to come back, dont take a landy" - LOL - only kidding! landy is one of the best cars made, 2/3 ever built r still running and I saw loads of series landy's in the Ngorongoro area doing what they do best - haul massive loads about.

Hi mate, thanks for dropping by. Yes, I had some Michelin hybrid gravel/road tyres on from running around in Europe, they were due to be replaced, but I was forced out of Windhoek by the LD, so I couldn't change them. I literally ran around on the last morning trying to see what was in stock and ended up having to had to buy a truck tyre as a spare in the end... I now have AT's, but doubt they would have made much difference in the sand of the river.
      Kind regards,
      Darrin
