The white staining is most likely calcite leaching out of the rocks during the rainy season. Rain higher up soaks into the country and absorbs minerals, the water then comes out the cracks on the face of the cliffs and dries out in the sun leaving the white staining.
Oh ok, thanks very much for the information - it makes sense given the flow of water. Cheers!
Welcome back - I'm really hoping you all enjoy this drive up the magnificent desert valley of Marienfluss, even if things don't quite go to plan!
amazing to see the effects of rain there . i think most of the marienfluss cattle disappeared in the drought . terrible for the inhabitants , really devastating . on the other hand the wildlife there has also suffered and the grassland badly damaged from overgrazing . the cattle ate the roots and they did it all the way up to rooidrom thanks to the borehole in the south that was really meant for wild life but got put to cattle . i see you were there in 2010 , was that before the fire at syncro ?. we were there at that time pity we missed you . where are you now ? Thanks for the great videos they are really enjoyable!
Love the low-key nature of the videos. Mercifully free of dramatic music and the usual gubbins you get with overlanding videos. Just a bloke in his van travelling around and sharing his experiences.
Thank you very much, it is very nice of you to take the time to leave a nice comment :-)
Busy planning a trip for next year so your videos really get the excitement going!
Great to hear that mate, and thanks for being kind enough to leave a comment as well :-) !
What an incredibly beautiful and surreal place. Thanks for sharing your adventure. I appreciate much effort had gone into producing this film
Glad you enjoyed it!
Red next to black....
Damn... I am all caught up now. No more binge watching.
Have bought you a couple of coffees today, keep up the great work 👍.
Such an enjoyable series.
It is very nice to hear that I am producing something that others value highly, it has been a lot of hard work.... :-)
And thank you so, so, so, so, so much for the extremely kind donations, it was a lovely surprise to wake up to!!
Glad to be able to travel so far northwest with you, as we never made it up there.
Hopefully next time :-)
Once again a great one Darrin. Never been to Marienfluss - maybe one day b4 that hyena get me aswell .. .. .. ..ha ha ha ha !
Stay safe and go slow. Waiting 4 the next one. Cheers.
Thanks very much Henry, I always appreciate your comments :-)
Howdy Darien! Wonderful shots of an amazing terrain! I was able to be in Namibia at the Waterberg Plateau in May a few years ago when rains turned the escarpment into a waterfall garden! We waded thru water everywhere and it did not seem like Namibia at all! Amazing how the rainy season can vary and it’s effect on the landscape…I respect your ability to bring us these awesome videos and travel to parts that most don’t know exist! I also spent time on an old farm near the Gamsberg Pass that was referred to as Arizona due to the amazing mts covered bu boulders and steep canyons. The fountains there attracted zebras from miles around and their hooves wore the rock to a glass smooth feel over the centuries. Very special. Thanks for your continued tour and allowing us to watch.
My pleasure Stuart! And thank you so so much for the lovely comments after every video, its a fairly lonely business this - to release a video to only a few views and no comments makes you think about not bothering if nobody responses, so always nice that you do! :-)
Please don't get disheartened Darrin, just keep doing what you're doing mate. I do not follow many youtube channels and comment on few, but I always watch your content (multiple times) and comment, as I know it will help you with the algorithm. There are not many out there that have real content like you provide.
Howdy Darien! Well hope that your travels find new spots for your enjoyment and your spirit of adventure! We always enjoy what you find as much is so new to us! Looking forward to seeing if you end up with a Himba or San wife in the future! Be well! 🦓🦒🐘🐆🐗🐊
Congrats to more than 1000 subscribers - hope to join your next clip soon 😊
Thank you very much!!
Proper enjoyed that Darrin, especially the thought of Croc's in the river, reminded me of my travels in Aus. Was always a bit nervous up north, haha
Glad you enjoyed it mate... they do ruin so many good swimming holes, but at the same time add a sense of danger to life which I think we need more of :-)
Koooh -Neh-Neh
They should write sign posts in writing like that ;-p
Good video's look forward to the future one's
Thanks 👍 Really glad you like them :-)
I really enjoyed my sunday evening with your new video - thanks for sharing! Though I am a German and "Marienfluss" is actually a german word I unfortunately don't know the origin of this name 🤔
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed it...
I believe the translation is 'Mary's River'... I haven't been able to find a reason why as of yet...
Beautiful! I am planning on exploring this area in summer 2025. I would be a novice driving a 4x4 toyota hilux and I'm wondering if Marienfluss, D3707 and any other tracks to get there would be ok for me to drive on. Any thoughts or recommendations? Thank you for taking us with you on your trips!
It all depends on how sensible you are - if mildly sensible and willing to back out when it gets beyond your limits, then I'd say go for it! Just allow plenty of time so you aren't rushing. Good luck!!
i heard you need a range of 1500 km to get to mareinfluss / kanuni river? is that true?
Not at all if that’s all you want to do, leaving from Opuwo and back then half of that would be fine. But if you want to continue down to Sesfontein and take lots of detours then more fuel is better. Maps exist with all of the km’s between places to calculate distance, it’s mostly slowly gravel/rocky roads, so not excessive fuel consumption.
@@roamingyak thank you
Hello! When can we expect a new video from this series?
Hi Andre, thanks for your interest and enthusiasm in my films. I'm working on solving a huge technical issue with RUclips, so as soon as thats resolved there will be a flood of new video's ;-)
Sorry , bit confused, you say you turned around but you never show the river?? but then you camp at the river? is there is trick or restricted area or places that is ok?
Yes I did mate. For a few minutes. I was planning on staying for a while and getting some nice shots, but the campsite on the river was closed, so just had a quick visit which was disappointing.... this link shows the river parts:
ruclips.net/video/0VQ60Hp88f0/видео.html
I get there in a later series as well :-)
nice! what engine do you have in the landy?
200TDI with a stubby R380 gearbox from the 300TDI era.
@@roamingyak nice! Basic, bush mechanics can easily fix.
Come on we are waiting for the new upload...🤣
Thanks for your enthusiasm!
Some technical delays are holding things up unfortunately ;-(
Hi Darrin, are you OK? You've been silent for a while mate....hope you're good bud?
Just noticed the previous post on RUclips tech issues,haha....hope that gets resolved soon. Looking forward to more episodes.......
Thanks :-)
:-)
Now I'm really worried mate, where are you? Are you OK? Please respond. There are people out here that care.....
Hi Martin, thanks very much for the continued support and concern.
It's genuinely extremely nice to know that my efforts to make films connect strongly with people like yourself. Ultimately thats the best reward I can receive.
Things have been very very bad for the last 6 months, but I've persevered against what seemed like hopeless odds, and today got some very good news which means I'll be able to continue with the channel in the new year :-)
Glad your ok mate....look forward to next episode. Have a merry Christmas.
