A parent in Florida was successful in getting a book filled with more violence, murder, rape, and incest than any of the books that school district had already banned. You guessed it. It was the Bible. The school board published a list of the issues that would get a book removed, and the board's published policy stated it would ban any book if it contained one issue from that list. The Bible contained several. I was surprised the board stood by their own policy, but I also think most boards don't like book banning. What's good for the goose...

Parents just want their kids to be taught reading, writing and arithmetic. That shouldn't be asking too much!? Primary and secondary school are different in orientation. In primary school, every subject is taken by the same group of students. That is, they all go to music class together, for the purpose of familiarity. Once they enter secondary school there is more choice in subjects. Not everyone takes the same subjects, and every class has a new set of students. This prepares secondary school students for university and college, where students are exposed to new people at almost every turn, building social skills and helping students adapt to new situations. All those other things that are uncomfortable to talk about...that can wait until college. Our kids can learn that like everyone else does.

My parents didn't understand the cruelty and different treatment, so they left Texas and went to New York got into the jazz scene and made friends. Later still searching for equality with the hippies. However, they made sure I understood the truth of it early on. Growing up in a almost totally white community, they read me black fables and histories, sad stuff like Tar Baby...and because they treated me like I should be able to understand I did. What better way to guide children and young adults through social situation’s than to read books that are historic or were written by famous author’s when you get together and discuss them in class and understand the context better. This is where children learn to express their opinions and have respectful conversation. When I grew up, we had some thing called “Great Books” And we read F Scott Fitzgerald, Nathaniel Hawthorne, we discussed the great Gatsby, and the Scarlett Letter, And the transcendental period. Henry David Thoreau, Edgar, Allan Poe, Walt Whitman. What children see play out in their homes with second, third, fourth marriages and arguments over custody and religion is far worse than anything they could read and discuss in the classroom. In Europe art, history and literature are studied as part of historic record and place events such as wars and societies in context. The US would do well to follow this example Given that we are losing our international stature in education.

These substitutes would sit with their feet up on the teacher's desk, ear plugs inserted, reading a paperback the entire period while the students goofed off in every way possible. And for such a decorated author, they really want to make much ado about nothing to keep us the public from really talking about things that matter. Let's be clear about this tactic, there are more important things to be talking about but as long as they keep doing the silly laws little focus will be put on things that really affect people and they are in essence creating the divine because it was not an issue for decades, how is it now an issue when it was not an issue 30+ years ago? I'm a retired English teacher who kept a classroom library made up of books I'd purchased or was given by parents, friends, and so on. If I were teaching in Florida today, I'd rather have no library at all rather than a censored library of books chosen by other people who do not know my students and what entice them to read. I'd likely let students know I was covering up books they were not allowed to read. I'd tell them i plan to box them up and put away at the end of the week or take home since they belonged to me. I'd also probably comment how I don't really have room at home for so many books. Then I'd turn my back on the books hoping they'd take them.
    Re: Parent Rights
Parents/Guardians could also know what I was teaching. I posted on my website and gave students copies of my lesson plans to take home. At parent conferences, I now only had copies available (plus they were posted in my classroom; I also made sure parents/guardians knew how to find that information. Not all parents/guardians are professional teachers and though they may know their child, they don't know all the students in my class. Dare they tell a surgeon, "Before you remove my child's tonsils, let an outside group of people who are not surgeons examine the surgery tools you will use so I can approve them."
    Re: Books Florida now bans:
I've taught a great number of the books on the list. Only once did I have a parent challenge her child reading a book -- Maya Angelou's I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. I offered an alternative book for him to read and answered questions & write essays about (rather than read nothing and draw some pictures as the parent and student suggested). The student chose to read what everyone else was reading; reading a different book left him out of the group work since no one else wanted to read the alternative. No one complained when I taught Morrison's Bluest Eye nor her Song of Solomon to high school seniors. Nor did they complain when I taught To Kill a Mockingbird including the historical background of racist systems in the U.S. that the novel references My Holocaust unit was praised by students as well as parents/guardians and administration.
I kept books in my classroom library about child abuse, racism, fascism, homelessness, poverty, and other hot button issues -- many related to current political issues -- with which my students connected. I heard many of my high school students say, "That's the first whole book I read all the way through!" as they begged for "more like this one." I was happy to oblige them and often purchased the books myself.

Good for them! The best way to get a kid to read something is to ban it! Stupid Republicans!

I wonder how many of these parents’ kids have smart phones with the internet on them.
