Season 5 Episode 24 "Both Sides Now"
House and the team are intrigued by Scott (Ashton Holmes), a man who has undergone a corpus callosotomy procedure to treat epilepsy. Due to this, both sides of his brain are at war for dominance over the body resulting in him having Alien Hand Syndrome where he can't control his left arm. At the same time Cuddy and House try to deal with their relationship after spending the night at his apartment. The next day, House tells Wilson that he has stopped taking drugs and had sex with Cuddy, to which Wilson responds "Wow". But he also tells him that Cuddy may be repressing her feelings for him, and is trying to avoid him. Finally House realizes that his night with Cuddy and her helping him to stop his addiction to Vicodin was all an elaborate hallucination. With his hallucinations spiraling out of control, House is forced to go into a mental health facility after becoming unable to tell fantasy from reality.

Glad she didn't come for break up, great girlfriend.
Just a though but what if one the reasons why House appears to be so egoistical is not because he's right most of the time but because people brush off his theories so much he adopted that douchy attitude.
Isn't that what happened to his leg? The doctors didn't believe him and it was too late when house convinced them he had a blood clot. Even when house demanded a specific surgery, the doctors went against his wishes and caused a lifetime of pain and then they think he doesn't need the Vicodin for the pain the doctors caused. I would be an ass too
@@jkm7983 actually the doctors were trying to convince house that the best thing for his leg was amputation. House wanted to get a chunk of his leg cut out rather than loose his whole leg.
I would say thats a really bad reaction to criticism and he still needs help dialing down his ego

So they never tried strapping down the hand when it was causing problems? ( slapping people, knocking away the ultrasound wand)
It could have hurt him trying to get free. Most people who are restrained know not to fight the restraints.
Where's the fun in that?
Same reason you don't restrain people who are having seizures, because they can seriously injure themselves.
It's easy to underestimate how strong the human body can be when there's no conscious person acting as a 'limiter' of sorts. Sure, they probably won't break free of the restraint but they will break their own bones under the full force of their muscles fighting the restraints.
The arm could break itself trying to get free. You're capable of incredible strength when your body's safeguards aren't in place - its why people high on coke are so strong.
It could’ve caused that side to start fighting the restraint which would make things far worse.
I recently watched a video explaining split brain syndrome and its really interesting, basically there's people in your head, its just that only your left brain can speak meanwhile right has to deal with left but when they are split right has a mind of his own and its own opinions
You sure you didn't just watch inside out?
ImGlassy left and right normally communicate through some special part of the brain that used to be cut to treat people with epilepsy or something like that(it didn’t work and that was like during ww2), if that connection is hurt right and left can’t communicate and neither knows what the other does and act on it’s own

Oh cool! I learned about this in IGCSE Psych. There was a case where the corpus callosum was severed to prevent epilepsy, and the test with the words and him drawing images was done and showed similar results. If you want to check it out it was called Sperry's split brain study or something. Super interesting!

Alien Hand Syndrome is so cool if you learn how to somewhat compromise with it. At least you'll know when something is wrong because one side will fight you and the other won't whereas if everything is okay, both sides should be able to acknowledge each other and work together in a way.
I always wondered if people with this condition can talk to their other side. The main person talks out loud and the hand would write what it wants to say down

This was one of my favorite episodes! The phantom hand disorder is just fascinating and this episode is one of the most realistic depictions of it- even if it is slightly exaggerated.
left brain subconsciously knowing what the right brain couldn’t see (candle/stand up)
Right brain subconsciously knowing what makes him sick that the left brain couldn’t figure out (heavy duty deodorant chemical allergy)
Right brain knowing that she’s the one that brought the super-stink-stick and resenting her for it… right brain being appreciative that she made the connection between its actions and it’s motive, showing gentleness was confirmation

When the liver fails doesn't it present itching in the feet first? Idk still cool
You remember that from the episode where the guy had locked-in syndrome don't you? Lol
@@tnttagger6559 oh yeah I read up on in a bit after that too neat shit
mostly yellow eyes, big eye circles and itchiness are all a sign of liver failuar... itchiness is on specific spots or areas for example on legs or torso or feet but zhe itchiness is terrible it can lead to a person scratching off thair skin in thair sleep and nothing stops it...when my doctor suspected me of liver failuar my legs were covered in deep scratches despite wearing long pants
@Ghost Hernandez it is great thank you 💕
Mostly your skin and eyes becoming yellow and terrible itching all over the body are the symptomps.. Altough i had a liver transplant two months ago and now im fine.. The worst part is probably the itching and since i was in hospital for 7 months waiting for the new liver they gave me every possible treatment for itching but nothing helped.. Turns out the reason you become yellow when you have liver failure is because the body is getting rid of innecesary junk through the sweat glands in the skin (and since the liver is failing it cant filter properly and turn things into sweat so the yellow stuff comes out instead of sweat.. Since the yellow stuff is a lot more dense than sweat it gets stuck under the top most part of skin and itches like crazy..sorry if this is innacurate.. Thats just how my doctors explained it to me.. Also im only 14 so i shouldnt be caring about this crap anyway..
I love the half-face shots in this. So well shot
I want a spin off show with this guy and his hand
It sounds less dirty in my head....
Omg yes
8:59 *Left hand:* "Thank you. Finally someone understands... and sorry for hitting you." lol
This is similar to a case I saw in psychology class where a man with epilepsy had his corpus callosum cut to alleviate the symptoms. Doctors used the exact same words on a screen test and the results mirrored what was shown in the episode.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychology
"so your left hand would rather play air guitar than give me a hard time?" nice
This first scene is based on actual experiments done with patients since the 70s. Its fascinating stuff about the left/right brain division.
The air guitar part is so awesome. Because of the words the doctor says and because he keeps raising a middle finger
Fun fact, every time I watch this episode the right side of my head warms up tremendously and feels all warm and cozy for some reason.
the thing i love about this clip is that it's pretty much factually accurate with people who have their brain split irl
I love how that guy just walked in like "oh it's occupied, guess I gotta go back now"
I have no idea why but that last part was weirdly sweet. I literally awwed out loud
Left hand at the end be like: FINALLY SOMEONE NOTICES ME
3:39 That wasn't a boom box or stereo system. House got his guitar and amp from his office, is rocking out just out of frame.
the ending of the clip, the right brain had been communicating it did like her, it knew she'd Notice what it was doing if it forced her to think about it. That is fucking clever.
Apparently, the reason thus happens is that the right side of the brain has less to do with language and thus that part of the brain literally cannot think In language anymore or communicate once the two halves are separated. It's a bit more complex than that, but it basically means you, who were both halves working together, suddenly become two distinct but connected entities. One with control over the language centers and one that doesn't.
It's a really creepy thought, honestly.
I wonder what the right side of my brain would say if it can control language/communication.
Daw the end is like the brain going "FINALLY SOMEONE UNDERSTOOD ME"
I love how parts of the episode were shot. It focusing on just his left or right side was awesome

Lol why didn't they just restrain his left hand
I haven't watched the episode but I assume it's because the left arm would then do something really aggressive or whatever. After all, it didn't like them doing anything to it.
Because it makes for better television if he can smack the shit out of people with the crazy hand.
Real reason: it's more dramatic
Possible in show reason: it might go crazy and cause muscle tears or broken bones
This is the best girlfriend anyone could have. He hit her, yet she is very understanding and instead of trying to blame him for anything, she is analysing what happened, to help him
The screen test with the words was actually done in real life and is accurate!
A psychologist called Sperry had the corpus callosum of epilepsy patients severed in an effort to do reduce seizures. While the seizures stopped - it did lead to some strange behaviour. Such as being able to repeat a word if flashed in one visual field - but only being able to draw the object that the word described when flashed in front of the other visual field.
Fascinating study
“I don’t wanna discourage him” lmfao 💀😂
is it just me who started randomly talking out loud to make sure my right brain doesn’t get pissed after this episode or?

The drawing scene is probably one of my favorite scenes in this show period
at 4:57 the way they back track so hard just to hear a little of his widom lol
But how would the right brain know that the deodorant is what's causing the issues?
The different hemispheres of your brain think about things in different manners. Even if it doesn't know it's the root cause, it could very well know that it's A problem. Memory is also region locked, so it's entirely possible that only one of his brains knows that propelyne glycol poisoning is an issue.
@@dracomurdock6349 I like the para-psycho/new age explanation: The Right brain is in touch with the cosmos, collective consciousness. it knows everything that anyone else knows. Obviously the manufacturers know this deodorant is dangerous and just wants more money. I smell a lawsuit.
@@colatrl.damg3167 His hand smells it too.
fyukfy I think the parts are in Some ways still connected so bc the functions are all over the place so Some parts are still of acces to each other and shared between them. Functions like sight, smell and lots of other things are shared between the brains. Also most patients have no trouble with memory or movement between left or right so the sides are still in contact.
From what I understand from seeing other examples of cases similar to this, both sides of the brain receive the exact same information from their environment, but each half processes that info differently and in cases like this ... can reach completely different conclusions, despite both sides receiving the same info. Which sometimes also means one half can pick up on something the other half misses completely.
So considering all that, in the context of this episode, I think throughout the period of continual use of the deodorant, right side brain made the connection between feeling ill and the use of the deodorant while the left side brain didn't. And since the right side brain is mute and "cut off" from the left side (meaning it can't share its data with its other half), that observation couldn't be acted upon.
This is a great episode for editing
2:34 I love how he puts that "You owe your insight to the mute loser" 😂🤣
The mute "loser" I think he's referring to is the subconscious. A wonder like no other, and without that, we would be well and truly boned 😅
The subconscious is the objective observer. I have a little theory about that...
The gut microbiome affects so much about us, from mood to energy levels.
And you know that 'gut instinct' we all talk about. Well I believe that the gut sends signals to the more clever subconscious and that relays the information to the conscious, saying "don't do that, it's too dangerous", or "look that way to spot danger". Super clever 😊
Also, the only reason it would be "mute" would be if the... connection bridge thing between the sides of the brain was severed.
@@jfarrar19 Aye I know what you mean. They're both active and secretly communicating. I think he said "mute loser" because consciously we're not really aware just how much the subconscious does all the time.
