That quote (which absolutely doesn't sound good today) was in reference to the idea of taking kids from nicer neighborhoods with lower crime rates and a good educational system, loading them on Federal buses and shipping them to schools in the ghetto. The kids in the lower income, high crime rate schools would be loaded up and sent to a different neighborhood for their education. Biden was against the idea of the Federal government forcing certain kids on to buses to be shipped to different communities for their education. He thought that it would cause hatred and resentment from both sides. He also thought it would increase racial tension and violence that was rampant at that time. While he opposed the Federal government forcing kids to attend schools in different communities, he was in support of it happening voluntarily. Seems like a pretty rational approach to me. When the Federal government forces people to do things, it often doesn't turn out the way people hope. If you provide opportunities for the playing field to level itself, it can turn out great in a natural way. That's why Biden supported increased Federal funding for cheaper housing in many of the more affluent communities. If the kids are part of the neighborhood, regardless of the economic disparity, it's much easier to integrate and acclimate peacefully and doesn't make the children feel like they are outsiders being judged and looked down upon. I'm not gonna speculate if Biden was right or wrong in his opposition to the Federal government forcing students in nice communities to be driven to schools in the ghettos and vice versa. I'm sure many of the students on both sides wouldn't be happy about it. If I grew up in a nice community and the Feds forced me on to a bus to attend school an hour away in a ghetto, I imagine I'd be pretty upset about it. If I grew up in a ghetto, I doubt I'd be comfortable being bused an hour into a nicer community and have the difference between the communities and lifestyles being rubbed in my face on a daily basis. I imagine the potential for brutal bullying of the poorer students would be horrific. Students and parents on both sides of the coin could easily find the situation untenable and to have the Feds force you and your children to participate in a school outside of the community you live in is very "Big Government" in my book. In my day, Republicans were supposed to be opposed to big government. Imagine if you worked hard, earned your success and managed to move to a nice, peaceful town with a good school and then the Feds show up and take your children to the ghetto 5 days a week for school, even thought your taxes are paying for a better school by your house. If that's what you would want to happen to your children, fine. I'd rather see a situation similar to some European countries where schools aren't allowed to discriminate by finances or distance. If you can drive the hour to the fancy private school two towns over, they have to accept your child. That would be a much better solution.

That quote (which absolutely doesn't sound good today) was in reference to the idea of taking kids from nicer neighborhoods with lower crime rates and a good educational system, loading them on Federal buses and shipping them to schools in the ghetto. The kids in the lower income, high crime rate schools would be loaded up and sent to a different neighborhood for their education.
Biden was against the idea of the Federal government forcing certain kids on to buses to be shipped to different communities for their education. He thought that it would cause hatred and resentment from both sides. He also thought it would increase racial tension and violence that was rampant at that time. While he opposed the Federal government forcing kids to attend schools in different communities, he was in support of it happening voluntarily. Seems like a pretty rational approach to me. When the Federal government forces people to do things, it often doesn't turn out the way people hope. If you provide opportunities for the playing field to level itself, it can turn out great in a natural way. That's why Biden supported increased Federal funding for cheaper housing in many of the more affluent communities. If the kids are part of the neighborhood, regardless of the economic disparity, it's much easier to integrate and acclimate peacefully and doesn't make the children feel like they are outsiders being judged and looked down upon.
I'm not gonna speculate if Biden was right or wrong in his opposition to the Federal government forcing students in nice communities to be driven to schools in the ghettos and vice versa. I'm sure many of the students on both sides wouldn't be happy about it. If I grew up in a nice community and the Feds forced me on to a bus to attend school an hour away in a ghetto, I imagine I'd be pretty upset about it. If I grew up in a ghetto, I doubt I'd be comfortable being bused an hour into a nicer community and have the difference between the communities and lifestyles being rubbed in my face on a daily basis. I imagine the potential for brutal bullying of the poorer students would be horrific. Students and parents on both sides of the coin could easily find the situation untenable and to have the Feds force you and your children to participate in a school outside of the community you live in is very "Big Government" in my book. In my day, Republicans were supposed to be opposed to big government.
Imagine if you worked hard, earned your success and managed to move to a nice, peaceful town with a good school and then the Feds show up and take your children to the ghetto 5 days a week for school, even thought your taxes are paying for a better school by your house. If that's what you would want to happen to your children, fine. I'd rather see a situation similar to some European countries where schools aren't allowed to discriminate by finances or distance. If you can drive the hour to the fancy private school two towns over, they have to accept your child. That would be a much better solution.
All I can hope for is that once he is a civilian again - the courts might be able to get him.
