FIDE has 17 million euro budget and they only succeed in generating useless FIDE arena which is overpriced and useless compared to lichess. They could have used lichess codebase and kept it uncommercial and had a refined platform with official FIDE tournaments, instead they made a bad platform noone wants to play on. they have been useless in past years selling off commercial rights and the numerous scandals when it comes to their handling of players is well documented. they have a vice president who has called a GM a "gypsy" for wearing short pants at a tournament and made some female players cry plus cheated at the european championship by retracting a move.

    Also, I've always thought this rule just added to the elitism of chess. If you're not financially well off you're already struggling to afford to go to tournaments, it's not fair to make people dress a certain way too.
    Let's also add that a suit is western clothing. As we want to grow the sport globally, surely we want to be inclusive of alternative attire, the biggest growing markets for chess are India and China, players should be allowed to dress in their own country's attire if that's what they want to do.

    My first reaction was that this is a ridiculous enforcement of the rules. But hearing the arguments from the president, I can understand their stance as well. Magnus had enough time to change, he just didn't want to be told what to do by Fide. You don't change the rules on the spot because one of the favourites decides not to adhere by them.

    • @coolcat23
      @coolcat23 14 часов назад +1

      It was Carlsen who had the "I can do whatever I want." attitude. FIDE proposed a relaxed version of the 2018 dress code, nobody complained, and after that as a player you just comply, end of story.

    • @RustyNPiece
      @RustyNPiece 13 часов назад

      @@coolcat23 Carlsen was annoyed and in my opinion rightfully so. He was already fined. There are plenty of ways to enforce the rules without escalating the situation further, e.g. another higher fine. If your move is, you will bend to our rules come hell or high water, then your understanding of power is an abusive one.

    • @coolcat23
      @coolcat23 13 часов назад

      @RustyNPiece The rule isn't there to generate income through fines. The rule is intended to ensure a standard of appearance. One cannot achieve the intent of the rule by simply fining people. It would be morally problematic to use rules to generate money rather than actually enforcing them.

      @@coolcat23Nobody answered at all, so you can't claim that they agreed to those rules, if they didn't answer in the affirmative and sign their answer with their own signature. Silence as a sign of approval carries no serious weight, and is nothing more than childish banter.

    • @RustyNPiece
      @RustyNPiece 6 часов назад

      @@coolcat23 The rule isn't there to effectively prohibit players from winning tournaments, too. But that's not really the point. The point is how you want to enforce the rules and get compliance. You could still have enforced the rule by understanding that interrupting a player's rapid tournament to go change clothes is disproportionate to the desired outcome and be satisfied that the player shows up the next day in "proper" attire. In this situation a subsequent fine just signals that although the clothes were deemed inappropriate there is more at stake here and players, spectators, investors as well as chess as a whole benefit more from the number 1 player playing than from him leaving.

    That whole _"we welcome more competitions for players, you just can't call it a 'world championship'"_ bit doesn’t seem right to me... having a contract with players that says _"I agree not to compete in any event that calls itself a 'world championship' for 4 years after my last FIDE event"_ (as said @ 21:35 ) sounds like a corporate non-compete clause you'd find in an _employment_ contract, not a competition entry agreement. And I’ve never heard an employer successfully enforcing more than 12-18 months of a non-compete clause, let alone a professional association trying to limit a player’s competitive career _for 4 years_ once they are no longer a member… that seems like a pretty egregious & unenforceable over-reach by FIDE.
    I get the feeling that hubris will be FIDE’s Achilles heel... because the relationship between sponsors, the public & the players in the digital age of the 2020's is completely different to the institutional dependency when the PCA split off in the 90's. And when FIDE's chosen broadcast technology wasn't working on day one, but grandmasters are regularly & reliably streaming games online for larger audiences... combined with this frankly ridiculous dress code situation... FIDE isn't doing professional chess or their own reputation any favours.

    FIDE doesn’t want Magnus to win another World Rapid Championship. How can they expect Magnus to not withdraw from the championship if they’re going to ban him from playing Round 9? It’s gonna be very difficult to have a fighting chance to win if he is disqualified from playing a round. So obviously Magnus had no choice but to withdraw.

    While I do think Magnus could have avoided this having known the rules in advance, FIDE’s rules are very old fashioned, superficial, and overly controlling. Haven’t jeans been considered part of business casual in most countries for decades now? And more importantly, why do people need to dress in business casual to play chess anyways? As long as players observe basic hygiene, don’t wear a chess engine, and don’t flash their private parts what does it matter what they wear? Isn’t it more important that they feel comfortable and play well?

  • @AnjelLee-f8c

    Love Magnus but he knew the rules. He did this on purpose because of his behind the scenes row with FIDE. If Nepo changed, he could have done the same. He wanted to create problems at the games in order to justify breaking away from FIDE. He did not want to play from the get go. Magnus needs to do better in terms of setting example for younger players. Having said all this, FIDE should not be preventing players from playing freestyle chess.
