This song is a favorite of my brother's. He has dementia now. It is one song he sings, and still knows all of the words. Every time I hear it, my heart breaks a little more." Please don't go, please don't go..." But he is going, and no way to stop it, even though he's still here physically. It is one song he has chosen for his memorial. Love this song, this rendition of it, love my brother. So sad and beautiful at the same time.
I can understand your emotion about this very well. Dementia is cruel condition. Still with you but also not with you. I think of you. And hope that your fond memories will carry you through.
In my previous comment, I shared that my brother loved this rendition of this song. Even with dementia, he could sing all the words. Last night, his journey with dementia came to an end. I am grateful he is now at peace, and back to his whole self. Rest easy, George. We will meet again. I love you!
Beautiful song and beautiful rendition by two legends. I hope nobody minds me saying, as Tom is an American songwriter, but there is such an Irish feel about this song.
For my late husband. Dan 1972 to 2008. Life was unkind but you could not have me better if you had not loved your country more. I finally understand. We will meet again
There was a period in the early to mid 60s when heartfelt songs like this were produced by so many artists almost all the time. I only came to appreciate them years later, as i was too young at the time. I wonder if the 60s will ever be repeated? Hope so.
My down's daughter was peeling onions for me and we were listening to this song and in no time at all she was in tears, not from the onions but crying for her best friend whom we had to leave behind when we changed countries. I'm not at all sure that she understood the words so I think that this must be a very powerful song.
All of us from that era can’t help but to join in. The voice of our generation and I had the good luck to see Tom in New Haven a few years ago. If only to see both of them!
Unexpectedly stumbling over this great song sung by Tom and Liam, after many years of it being such a familiar and favourite one, has stopped me in my tracks. Listening to those words and that melody anew suddenly made me sob with abandon. My dIfferent personal circumstances now give those evocative words a depth of meaning they never approached before. Every line hits home and hurts. Thank you Tom. The crying has been a good thing.
Ann Norman funny how songs like this change our perspective as we age. At 16 this was a nice folk song to sing yet at 60 it makes us think how we’ve been opened up to the vicissitudes of life. Tears my love can be rather cathartic.
What a beautiful duet they make. I grew up listening and going to see both men and wish I had known of this version for my father. Today is his Yahrzeit. Three years. I am so thankful he and my mother introduced me to such incredible music.
"Last Thing On My Mind".. An iconic song which, sung by 'any' artist, brings to mind a time when life was simple, and songs were calming. Great rendition. Sept. 2016
Man, I played in a band with my cousin and he used to always play this. He was killed in a motorcycle accident 9 months ago and I miss him so much. Love you Ry Guy! This brings back the memories
G.Alwrigth l'a souvent traduit ensuite!
This is a performance by the writer of the song and by Tommy , so well interpreted overall and we will forgive the fiddler!! as its still a classic rendition in every way. Thanks so much for posting this.
First time I heard this song was from the Bread and Rose's concert from the early 80s when Tom sang this live. The concert was pumped into the prison out there for the prisoners to enjoy the concert too.
It's a lesson too late for the learning Made of sand made of sand In the wink of an eye my soul is turning In your hand in your hand Are you going away with no word of farewell Will there be not a trace left behind I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind You have reasons a-plenty for the going This I know this I know For the weeds have been steadily agrowing Please don't go, please don't go Are you going away with no word of farewell Will there be not a trace left behind I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind As I walked along the street alone this morning Without you, without you Every hope in my heart I've been mourning Without you, without you Are you going away with no word of farewell Will there be not a trace left behind I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind
You never know....back when I worked for the Univ. of Oklahoma,I became acquainted with a student. Pleasant guy. Did some acting for our Film Production Unit. Then, not many years later, I began to hear of him as a singer/songwriter.Remember "Wonderful Toy"/"Ramblin' Boy" ? Too late I wished I had known him better.
It seems to me you have to go back to Greenwich Village of the 60's to get to the roots of what was then the beginning of a national recognition of folk music. There are always multiple currents of music running around us but most oof us limit ourselves in what we listen to ....... perhaps each time a musical form comes around again, "reawakening"/remembering what we had forgotten. Universal experiences/emotions can be found in folk music delivered in a delightfully melodic way.
This is among the most beautiful heartbreaking songs ever. I notice on the side of my RUclips screen that Peter Paul & Mary did it, so I'm sure that's where I first heard it, before I became familiar with Tom Paxton or paid attention to who the songwriters were (was there ever such a time in my life? well, yes).
Tom Paxton still with us, and will turn 80 on Oct. 31 this year, (2017). Dia de los Muertos! On the day of the dead, we can celebrate his still being alive.
Omg God Bless you Tom n thanks for this memorable song never forgotten never stopped playing it. You n Liam are absolutely the greatest with this song.
...after listening to his original performance in 1964 and then this one...he is the only one that sings from the heart.....it is not a happy bouncy song...like others have made it to be...the best accolade anyone can give a songwriter iks to want to sing that song...so many have done so...
This song is a favorite of my brother's. He has dementia now. It is one song he sings, and still knows all of the words. Every time I hear it, my heart breaks a little more." There is a healing in music like no other. The best to you and yours.
I can understand your emotion about this very well. Dementia is cruel condition. Still with you but also not with you. I think of you. And hope that your fond memories will carry you through.
I am so sorry that your brother is weakening - but if you gonna remember just ONE song, this is a good choice. God bless you and yours.
so good
God bless you it is truly a cruel illness x
I was 14 in Hawaii when I learned this song. Begged my parents for a guitar. Love this and Tom’s emotional tonal quality.
Liam’s Irish accent with Tom’s American accent adds so much to the song. A universal song.
In my previous comment, I shared that my brother loved this rendition of this song. Even with dementia, he could sing all the words. Last night, his journey with dementia came to an end. I am grateful he is now at peace, and back to his whole self. Rest easy, George. We will meet again. I love you!
So sorry for your loss.
Bless you. ❤
Rest easy, George. My condolences to you. May your brother's memory be a blessing.
I came looking for Tom's original take, early 60's. I stumbled upon this instead .
Aye, it's bringing me tears.
Thank ye.
Happy St.Patrick's day with good whiskey and music, both at the same time.
Tom Paxton is so much underrated.
He is an icon
This is one of the best versions I've heard... The chorus needs harmonies!
And to hear the audience singing along in the background is lovely ..
Thank you. I love it also so much.
Gets better every time I watch
I sang this Song at my late Wife's funeral without crying, in my mind, I was looking at her healthy, leaving this World and the Cancer behind.
Two of the finest folk singers in the whole of this world joined forces on stage and this is the result , absolutely divine. Thanks for posting
😂100 percent Agreed!
Absolutely two of the best ever. Glad they could get together.
Beautiful, reminds me of the Bitter End in New York City. A great place to see and hear the greats in Folk History.
I love how everyone knows it and is singing along. Just gold. Thank you.
Beautiful song and beautiful rendition by two legends. I hope nobody minds me saying, as Tom is an American songwriter, but there is such an Irish feel about this song.

This song always brings back the memories of a love I had 50 years ago. I will never forget her or that time we had together.
This is my favorite version. Liam and band are wonderful and Tom is so great. It moves me.
This is real music. Love it. What a wonderful evening that must have been.
Only when old age comes a calling is it accompanied by such a tune. Come on in old friend, I've been expecting you.
There was a period in the early to mid 60s when heartfelt songs like this were produced by so many artists almost all the time. I only came to appreciate them years later, as i was too young at the time. I wonder if the 60s will ever be repeated? Hope so.
Always loved this song. Haven't listened it for some time. Beautiful rendition. Two of my favorite old folk singers.
❤😢
Every time I hear this song, I'm back in college in 1966, wistful, with my whole life ahead.
and look at you now (another old new englander)
Me too. So innocent i was. And surprisingly not wrong about how to live. Wish i had had more confidence.
This song always gives me chills - wonderful to say the least. Love the fiddle break - a thing of beauty for the ears and soul.....(:-)
Yes indeed, the fiddler is magical...coz he keeps the melody line "low". It's what I tend to do on my diatonical harmonica.
My down's daughter was peeling onions for me and we were listening to this song and in no time at all she was in tears, not from the onions but crying for her best friend whom we had to leave behind when we changed countries. I'm not at all sure that she understood the words so I think that this must be a very powerful song.
I was in an audience singing along with him in 1981.
When Liam sings “Please don’t go...” that’s when I lost it. We’ll never see his like again.
Last thing on my mind is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. I can't listen to it or sing it without tears coming to my eyes.
Fantastic rendition that. My Dad used to play this on his guitar when we were kids.
Still magic after all these years......thanks🏴🇦🇺
One of the first songs Ah ever sang in front of an audience, still love it.!!
A great timeless song, beautifully performed by Tom Paxton & Liam Clancy
Wow, what a beautiful song, what emotion, kudoos Liam n Tom, God bless you both

I love the whole audience singing along, so easily and naturally. Beautiful video.

l'arrière garde de l'authenticité merci pour toute ces créations émouvantes
A beautiful song, one of our favourites - still have the lp - hard to listen to now my lady left me 12 years ago. She died.
So sorry
Adore this song, and this version is just sublime. What a song writer and what performers - pure joy for such a bittersweet lyric
ooohh..this goes so straight and deep. what a poetry and musicality..high culture..irish !
Beautiful version of this classic and music as its purest...TIMELESS
This just makes me feel good. I love these guys.

WOW! I forgot all about this song; just so beautiful. And it means so much.
Just found this site and suddenly was back in the forties! Good feeling!
1968 - Paris. Tom Paxton blew us away.
Such great artists all you guys!! What a wonderful performance!!!

The best song from a brilliant writer/singer.
Thank you Tom, not seen you in years, but hear you all the time. Thank you so much.
A great blend of American Folk music and Irish Traditional
nothing like good folk music -- personal, intimate, intense, literary, lending a social and political experience to the heart.. honest as well.
recommend 'rambling boy' by tom paxton
yes god music and a great irish legend and tom also go hanna mhaith
That was very succinct way of putting it. Lovely comment

So beautiful, 2 great singers...
Greetings From Super Extremes- Sri Lanka
💚 💛 ❤ 💙 💜
Tom Paxton writes the most meaningful lyrics of all
donegal donny
That would be the reason so many other artists sang his songs.
this music is timeless
Just saw Bruce Woodley 'The Seekers' sing this great song. He was 74 this week. Great artist as well
First time I heard this song was from the Bread and Rose's concert from the early 80s when Tom sang this live. The concert was pumped into the prison out there for the prisoners to enjoy the concert too.
What’s a wonderful song. I love it so much.
Das ist die beste Medizin für mich nach dem Stress des Alltags. Wunderschön, eine Seele ist schwerelos!
I have had the privilege of seeing Tom Paxton three times, I hope to see him again. A lovely man, happy to chat after the concert.
Two of my favourite singers
Never saw Tom in person but saw Liam many times at the Harp’n’Bard in Massachusetts. Great memories revisited 😀
I always loved that song by Tom Paxton Thanks a lot for sharing trhis video

Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for the memories. .....what a song I could have loved you better. ..
Agree mate even brings tears to my eyes
years since i last heard this beautiful song, timeless
Absolutely great
Liam throwing in a harmony or two for good measure ...a true Legend
This is the first time I heard this song since the 60s when Charlie Pride recorded it. Very moving.
It's a lesson too late for the learning
Made of sand made of sand
In the wink of an eye my soul is turning
In your hand in your hand
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind
Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind
You have reasons a-plenty for the going
This I know this I know
For the weeds have been steadily agrowing
Please don't go, please don't go
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind
Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind
As I walked along the street alone this morning
Without you, without you
Every hope in my heart I've been mourning
Without you, without you
Are you going away with no word of farewell
Will there be not a trace left behind
I could have loved you better didn't mean to be unkind
Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind
Don't you know that was the last thing on my mind
Perhaps the best rendition of this song I’ve experienced.
Feel so blessed to have seen Tom singing live at The Old Picture House in Beverley a few years back. 🇬🇧
Beautiful ❤

Sweet pathos that helped us grown through those years of chaotic liberties, the winds of freedom, and the heartache of loss.
wonderful song!
These voices are who I am. Might need to quit my job and become a folk singer?
The heros of my youth ....
Great performance of my favorite song.in its genre
