Retired Mount Vernon Firefighter Receives Surprise from Mohegan Lake FD Upon Discharge From Rehab

  • A storied, award-winning retired firefighter, Edmund Miley, was treated to a surprise celebration as he was discharged from his rehabilitation at North Westchester Restorative Therapy & Nursing Center. Miley was joined by his wife and children and 50 members from the Mohegan Lake Fire Department who surprised him in being part of a full honor escort out of the facility. Miley has been recovering from a severe stroke and will return home to continue his recovery process. A volunteer fireman for 30 years, Miley served as Captain of the Mount Vernon Fire Department for four years and Yonkers Fire Department for 26 years. During his storied career, he rescued 5 people trapped above a fire and received the Fireman of the Year award from the City of Yonkers, among numerous other heroic acts.
    Miley is recovering from a stroke which has affected his speech and motor skills. He has been resilient throughout the rehabbing process, overcoming several obstacles. Every day Miley has been working with the experts at North Westchester’s physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology experts. He is now walking and on his feet, and will continue his therapies in a home, outpatient setting.
    Miley was an award-winning volunteer firefighter for 30 years, serving as Captain of the Mount Vernon Fire Department for four years and Yonkers Fire Department for 26 years. During his storied career, he rescued 5 people trapped above a fire and received the Fireman of the Year award from the City of Yonkers, delivered four babies and received another award saving a fellow firefighter who was trapped on a roof.
