I grew up next to a guy like this. A World War II and Korea vet. Had absolutely no brain to mouth filter, unintentionally funny as hell, but would give the shirt off his back to help his neighbors. He lived to 98 years old. Miss that old bastard.
* Rumsfield. The characters name is Mark Rumsfield. Rumsfeld, was former U.S. Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld. Perhaps they modeled the character on him. 😊
If you like his character portrayal here. Bruce Dern plays virtually the same character (but dramatic) a bitter military veteran in Black Sunday (1977) Thriller. Film had 2 Academy Award nominations. Just don't watch it if you're feeling down, or have been in a terrorist situation. It's a bit grim at times.
I live in LA and have been to Universal Studios where they feature this street set on their lot tour. I instantly thought back to this movie and how funny it was. It's crazy how it all takes place on one set. There's no second location or anything.
And the academy award for best supporting actor goes to Bruce Dern for the Burbs. And his portrayel of retired army veteran Mark Rumsfield. Lol. Seriously though, this movie may not have won any awards but I guarantee it means more to more people than whatever won that year in the so called important films categories. The Burbs is a true B movie 80's classic with a huge cult following. It is hilarious and witty with some Hitchcock esque mystery thrown in. And a perfect cast that didn't take themselves too seriously in 1989 back when you could still make silly and fun movies just to entertain people for a few hours. It is one of those flicks that I always re-watch once or twice a year. And one of the best to throw on late at night on a weekend when you can't think of what to watch but just want something fun and entertaining. Watching the Burbs again and again is like comfort food for me.

Top ten best movie characters of all time. "Heyyyy! Pinnochioooooo!" The part where he peels off the wallpaper is the funniest thing ever filmed... "Because YOU... are a garbageman!"
I just retired from the military a few years ago and currently live in the burbs. I totally aspire to be a Captain Mark Rumsfield. Bruce Dern is frik’n hilarious in this film, definitely steals every scene. "A soldier's way saves the day!" - Mark Rumsfield

Absolutely brilliant character and performance from Bruce Dern - the entire film is genius but Bruce really did get all the best lines - "About a nine on the tension scale there Reub"
Rumsfield must be about 87 years old now, and I'm pretty sure he still lives on Mayfield Place, and that's he's keeping an eye on all his new neighbours.
I was only a teenager when I first saw and loved this movie , but I am a uk burb and have been for years now. Didn’t realise till a few yrs ago that Bruce derns daughter is the girl from Jurassic park, Star Wars ec, and it was mad to see him again in once upon a time in Hollywood
This movie is basically 'Rocko's Modern Life' but with Burt Gummer from 'Tremors' in place of Filbert. 5:00 You can tell Rick Ducommun's Canadian by the way he pronounced "against." Nothing wrong with that, of course.
l walked into the kitchen last night and said "smells like somebody is cooking a goddamn cat in here" while the wife was cooking dinner. Ended up eating a ham sandwich and sleeping on the couch....
@@theganglymangler2941 Aww man, that sucks. I wanted to do just a quick video of him coming out of the house with the music, but was afraid of a strike. IDC about money that much either for something like this. Thanks for the video btw!

Every Rumsfeld line is the best of Rumsfeld
I agree. Him and art.

"Shut up and paint your godddamn house!"
Bruce Dern really should’ve been in more comedies he’s hilarious in this. He’s like a Clint Eastwood that doesn’t take himself seriously
I agree! Bruce Dern is awesome anywhere.

To have him as my neighbor would be AWESOME! I wouldn't sell my house.

Just make sure that piece of scum barking rat of yours doesn't take a dump on his lawn.
About a nine on the tension scale
@@bobsacamano7653 that's my mom's favorite line.
I would yell YO RUMSFIELD everytime I see him
"Came with the frame" and "That kid's a meatball" are phrases my family uses to this day.
There go the goddamn brownies
😂😂 Classic
Got leaves in em n sh*t lmao
If this dude was my neighbor, I’d feel 1000% safe.
i said the same thing...;
As long as he wasn't up on the roof. "Yo Rumsfield!"
That has got to be the funniest way to fall off a roof that I've ever seen!
That is one of my all time favorite stunts.
You forgot a line. "You keep a horse in the basement?!" 24 years later, this man would play another masterpiece role as Woody Grant in Nebraska.
Loved that movie

"Walter, the old man next door? We don't know where the Hell he is!!"

The falling off the roof bit is one of the best pieces of physical comedy ever put to film.

When Rumsfeld tries to offer the goddamn floor brownies, I just lost it.
Under most circumstances floor brownies are good to go.
A little something for the sweet tooth
"Ay, Pinocchio! Where are you going!?"
LOVE that line
"It kem with the frem..." is a line my wife & I find a reason to say to each other at least once a month....
YO, Rumsfield!!!
You are a true genius and understand the finest in humor.
Burbs still our fave Hanks movie.
This movie is a favorite with my family. Rumsfeld’s zingers are classic! 😂

I love that he calls him Reub after knowing him for 2.5 minutes.
Dern's instant contempt for all the Klopeks is absolutely hilarious!
"It's very high."
That takedown was pretty badass, ngl.
There go the goddamn brownies!!!! ROFL
Love this! My Dad and me still laugh at all his scenes!!🤩😂🤣😅😆😆😁👍👍

Rumsfield must be about 87 years old now, and I'm pretty sure he still lives on Mayfield Place, and that's he's keeping an eye on all his new neighbours.
I’d pay good money to watch a cross over with Rumsfield and the couple from Tremors being suspicious of everyone they live next to.
This is the best movie ever!
I love this movie so much and this is the best character by far.
Love this movie 👏🏻👏🏻❤️
It's the best
My favorite character in this movie!
He's up there with Burt from Tremors.

One of the all-time funniest roles by an actor who really wasn’t known for that genre.
Gentlemen, We are On alert.
excellent editing. well done and hysterical.
Thank you 🤘
Rumsfeld is literally my spirit animal.
Bruce Dern looks the same in this in 1989 as in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 30 years later.

I die everytime rumsfield is in the garbage truck upside down yelling at the garbage man saying his taxes pay your salary!! Lmfao
