- The new exhaust I made for my BMW M3 ended up too loud for most UK trackdays. We'd made a temporary solution, now it's time for the real thing. Jay makes a completely custom exhaust silencer from scratch & I drill a hole in my DCT gearbox.

Cutting these tubes at angles is quite a bit of fabrication so I’m going to make a whole box from scratch. That’s the most Phil thing hahah
Judging on how the exhaust interacts with the subframe at this point it would have been easier to just tube chassis the whole car.

IT'S NOT SILENT......BUT IT'S REALLY QUIET!
Stainless steel wire wool is commonly used to pack around the perforated tube first then fiber glass packing… slows the loss and burning of glass material. For next time 👍
My face dropped so hard when I saw the oil running out of the gearbox. Glad you got that sorted without too much hassle. One to forget about for sure.

I was thinking to myself as you started drilling "I wonder how deep you have to drill?" then oil started coming out. So, a bit less deep than that.

A cap head screw looks like it would have fitted between the oil ports/AN fittings with ease?… if you have any problems, make your own block and use the centre bolt mount again.

Nail biting stuff lol......surprised you didn't get the Db meter on it to compare the difference......sometimes a silencer can make or brake the sound of a car. Hats off to Jay though.

Well i didn't think that would work that well. But what do i know. And great bit of fabrication work jay. Many years ago i made a piggy back exhaust for my motorbike but slightly different the design is called shock wave. Top work Terry from next door

Phil the evolve eventuri plenem and intake would finish off this master piece they sound great.
We have our own on this. A standard (or Eventuri) airbox doesn't fit under the bonnet so it's got custom trumpets and a carbon lid.
Evolve is great. But the trumpets will work just as good i think.

Love your E30 Phil, but reminds me just how gutted I still am to have had to sell mine. Don't get me wrong, things could be worse and I still have an old 911 to play with, but I do miss my old E30 M3. If Jay wants any more practice he's welcome to straight pipe my 996 for me.
Another idea: 1/4th wave resonator that acts on the rpm range that test is done?
You should have done a before and after. Sounds well good though, that extra volume of the silencer is quite significant and effective.

If instead of a square, the centre of the adapter was drilled with a taper, you could just fit a countersunk m8 bolt. Would have saved you a LOT of effort.
No idea why they don't make it like that, there's enough material.
Did you do a phone dB before and after test?
Nice job on the silencer 👍🏼 with the extra one in the van, even if you do ever fail, you know you can quickly bolt that on 👌🏼
These guys are very good. There must be a reason for it. Yeah I should have an option for even the worst tracks now. Very pleased.
Araldyte ? I find chemical metal the thing to use in instances like that ! Sometimes drilling out studs on motorcycle exhausts you hit a water jacket.

You can also make an easy to fit 90 degree down tip with a blunt end like the dundon gt3 quiet tips. Easy to make and fit and will prob cut a db or two

That looks very bad for flow, but a great solution for a GT3 on a quiet day. Is the idea that the pulses bounce back against themselves and dampen the sound?

Then again when you have 2 or 3 can you just people next door a bit of grind and weld isn’t a problem
Putting a Twin loop in that section would have successful as well....just an alternative for u guys in the future

No, the project is on hold while other stuff is sorted. I think I need to do a video to explain as it's every tenth comment 😂

What are the noise limits @ tracks? Is goodwood really strict?
Most we deal with are a 98db flyby (roughly 102-105db at 1m) Goodwood has some of the worst nobhead neighbours so is 98db at 1m I think.
My parents live within range of Goodwood and I love it, especially on Revival weekend. You'd think if you didn't like the noise you wouldn't buy a house near there!

I would have just cut out an oval shaped steel washer then use the middle slot, far stronger and less faff!

@@driftworks for that piece where u had to drill the sump like section to be able to install the stud to which you added a nut to secure the gold seems legit part. But it's done now and working well!!! Good video
