  • This PowerNation Extra gives you a look at the different kinds of aftermarket mufflers available when you want to upgrade your exhaust system. Marc from Detroit Muscle lays out the three main types: glasspack, chamber, and turbo. The glasspack is the original high performance muffler. However, chamber and turbo aren't bad options either depending on what you're going for.

    I like chambered. If I really needed quiet, I'd use a U-turn "turbo" style or multiple chambered mufflers, or a multi-chamber muffler. Loud mode? Cherry Bomb M80.

      Chambered muffler create tons of drone right?

    • @Drunken_Hamster
      @Drunken_Hamster 3 года назад +1

      @@hanialzhrani5897 Depends on the quality. A cheaply made one with thin walls will probably sound buzzy and echoy. Some people like that, though. Also a lot of other factors about your entire exhaust system come into play such as headers, your crossover if you have a V engine, whether or not you have catalytic convertors and what kind (high flow vs regular), the diameter of your exhaust tubing, wall thickness of it, location of the tip, and so on.
      The state of tune your engine is in also plays a role. A more highly tuned engine with higher compression and aggressive cams will be louder than a stock or economy engine. Displacement plays a role, too. Bigger engine, usually a bigger sound. Any weird shit like cylinder deactivation for economy, variable cam timing/lift, and so on will also affect sound when those come into play.
      So... What are you looking to achieve?

    But by 1978 the salt from on the roads in the winter time took a toll on the frame and it rotted out back at the rear of the rear wheel arch and he had to junk it. There was no such thing as fixing a frame back then.

    HAs the channel ever did a dual exhaust versus single challenge/test?
    i just got a 84 cutlass with horrible sounding dual 2" exhaust with red glasspack bottles and wondering if it would sound better as in more rumbly with one single 3" which will also flow better since one 3" pipe is about 7 sq cm versus 2 x2" =6.28 sq cm?
    or can that smaller 2" dual setup scavenge better and keep low end TQ versus a big single which may gain high rpm hp but sacrifice about the same amt of low/mid range TQ
    to make the question even harder, im currently running the stock 305 SBC but already bought a used 2003 5.3L LS which will double the stock 305hp [nevermind all the ponies that escaped that 305 barn in last 37 yrs, lol. ]

      I know this is late but I can tell you on my 1993 LT1 Corvette I had first went with Flowmaster 2-chamber mufflers, the previous owner had removed the stock dual mufflers completely (and needless to say it was very loud like that) but the 2-chamber Flowmasters were barely any different than having no mufflers at all, plus they actually droned WORSE between 1,500-2,500 rpms. They were a bit quieter at idle and at higher rpms but that was it.
      Clearly I wasn't satisfied with this setup so I had quickly set up an exchange on Amazon and went with Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers instead, and I am VERY happy with them. They are much better than the Flowmasters in my opinion, they are much quieter at idle and at all rpms, there's virtually no drone (which was a big problem with the Flowmasters) but they still provide enough sound & flow at higher rpms which gives them a deep, clean, sporty tone. To me they are almost perfect for someone that's looking for more sound/flow than the stock exhaust but with a loud and obnoxious sound. They are definitely not loud but they still have a nice rumble that's not overbearing.
      Based on what you said you're looking for I would definitely recommend the Dynomax Super Turbo muffler, you can't go wrong with them and they are inexpensive on Amazon.

    • @LordSaliss
      @LordSaliss 2 года назад +1

      A glasspack filters out higher frequency noises, so you get a lower tone from it, but once you exceed a certain exhaust gas threshold it starts letting through a lot of high frequency pulses that sound like those pops or often referred to as raspiness. The longer the glasspack, the deeper the tone. This is because the length of the tube is directly proportional to the frequency filtering. So if you want a deep tone on a tiny engine, try and get an 18-24" long glasspack to be used as a resonator about halfway through your exhaust.
      Then if you want to get rid of the higher frequency rasp, you can run a chambered muffler on the end. It will make use of the already filtered sound and still keep things deep, but also help with the rasp leftover from the glasspack. Or if you like those higher frequency pops when you floor it, then just stick another glasspack muffler on the end or try out a turbine muffler. A turbine type can sound deep too, and it is sort of a combination of glasspack and chambered types in design.
