Nice work. In my limited experience a smaller muffler body often has a louder an aggressive exhaust tone, whereas a larger muffler body often has a slightly quieter less aggressive exhaust tone at least with straight through exhaust systems. And the same can generally be said for chambered exhaust systems except that chambered mufflers are slightly quieter and at the same time a deeper exhaust tone.
ive had visions of making my own mufflers and testing them on my truck and possibly modifying other already made mufflers to see how they would sound ? like half of a magnaflow mated up with half of a flow master 40 minus the dividers and v shaped sound plates ? also it would be cool to cut out the top outter panel like you did on the muffler on other brand name mufflers but replace it with a sheet of plexy glass and seal it. then using a shop vac with no filter and a fog machine I would hook up the vaccum on the exit port and have the fog machine pushing for through the inlet to show what the exhaust gases are doing aka flow and or turbulence inside the muffler . maybe even starting my own line of performance mufflers?

I am presently re-doing my exhaust system from my turbo charger from my 1835 VW powered experimental airplane, there is minimum space in the engine compartment but I want to silence the exhaust as much as possible with as little weight as possible. I could do the same thing that your doing but instead of the heavy duty screen for internal pipe just buy cheap sections of pipe pieces from O reallys and just drill holes all over the piping. I'd use bag of steel wool and a roll of insulation from a home improvement store and wrap the internal pipe and fill the rest with insulation

I'm fascinated! A Retired Wrench of 35 years, I'd say this was a first!! I was also an Engine Builder and Racer. It's fairly obvious that you simply turned a Flowmaster into a Magnaflow.... Without the huge cost of a Magnaflow. Genius in its simplicity! In my book, anything that eliminates DRONE in the Cabin is a Win. You're a little louder at Idle (NOT a bad thing), but a decent amount quieter at high revs. .... If I can ever afford a Plasma Cutter, I'd try that myself! 😉 Only thing different is, I'd try to find a sheet of Stainless Steel - purely for looks.

I have Borla ProXS on my 02 HO with 3” from factory y pipe back to the Borla, no 3rd cat and factory 02 chrome tip tail pipe and mine sounds almost identical. I have another WJ with a 4.7 that needs to have its OEM from 99 exhaust fixed. I also have a spare flowmaster laying around and I’m gonna try this
Great video. I was wondering if they made a muffler that is a combination of a chambered muffler and an absorbtion muffler. Like it uses chambers and has an outer layer with some fiberglass or similar packing. i found something called the flowermaster dbx but its not quite chambered.

Greetings. Do you think that if a metal mesh made of sufficiently thick wire is used in a direct-flow muffler as a central pipe instead of perforation, noise absorption will improve? The grid will reduce the speed of passage of gases, which will add time to filter noise in the muffler. And the mesh will increase the contact area with the fiberglass.
I like diy mods like this. Chambered are supposed to be quieter than straight throughs but it's the other way round in this case because of the larger than normal holes in the perforated tube, you could have had it abit more quieter had you used more glass pack than scour pads.
Martin, seemed like a lot of work for just 3db's. I am sure I am going to get hammered on this but, wouldn't it have made sense to just find a muffler that suited your needs? Not knocking your workmanship. You are awesome...
yes it would have been easier to just install a Magnaflow or Borla but then it wouldn't be a martinbuilt built video. 3 db doesn't sound like much but there is a big difference between 100 and 103. db have an exponential growth. Thank you for commenting.
Being an old street rodder, wouldn’t just using a 67 thunderbird resonator / rear muffler component accomplish the same outcome ? Awesome thin profile, super flow and noise tamer.
Just a tip for the future. The further back you place a muffler, the quieter it will be. It will also be less restrictive because the exhaust gasses are cooler.

I run a Thrush Welded muffler ( That is it's name) which has the same flow thru design, and sounds great, much like your finished product. My muffler costs about $30.00. How much total did yours cost between purchasing the muffler, then all the extra metal, and packing?
Thank you, I originally paid $50 for the Flowmaster 50 HD picked it up on Craigslist the guy only had it for like a couple months. Then I probably got $35 in packing material. And the perforated metal I got from a friend of mine that has a welding shop he gave that to me for free.
I've lived in PA my whole life and am an auto mechanic of 16 years with an inspection license for roughly 12 of those years and I have never heard of anything like that 😂
i am preparing to do that but i am in doubt: i wanna make it quieter for high frequency, and what diameter of hole is the best: small 2-3mm or big 5-6mm or it would be better to use inox net with 1mm wire and hole that can be any from 0.5mm to 10mm

Hey Martin! I tried to call the Jeep parts department in regards to a 2001 Jeep WJ 4.7L rear catalytic converter. I just had one stolen off of one of my WJs here in Vegas and am looking to find an original one; However, I can't find one for the exact year, because they are discontinued. There are 2003 and 2004 converters available but the parts department wasn't able to answer whether or not I would be able to use those. Since you are one of the most talented mechanical engineers I've seen on RUclips and have a lot of experience with this vehicle, I figured I would ask you. Any thoughts on whether or not I would be able to use the newer converters and if not, is there a particular rear cat you can recommend? Thank you in advance!

A stupid question, I have one muffler from China and what would happen if I would just strip the inside and put nothing in it. Would I get just basic muffler delete for cheap?
Good day Martin, have a question for you...nor related to exhaust ,but to power. I have a JGC 2005 with a 4.7 i know that the same engine develop quite a bit more since 2008 I believe...as far as I know here are the difference between the two. 1- dual plug head , 2- increase compression , 3- better cylinder head flow , 4- new combustion system (better fit to handle E-85) just about everything seems centered around those cylinder heads. (Do you think it is possible to swap the newer head onto my 2005 GC. Any information would be greatly appreciated. You have a fan for life. Thanks for all you do. It really helps. Many Blessings AL
yeah that sounds about right. I believe there are some other changes to like the connecting rods got heavier the Pistons got heavier things like that. I haven't had a real close look at the 08 cylinder heads to compare them. But by looking at from pictures that would seem to me that the combustion chamber CC's has increased. But they're probably increasing compression from the Dome of the Pistons And if that is so you would lose compression by bolting them on your 4.7 Been waiting for one of these engines to show up at Pick-A-Part. There was a cylinder head on eBay a few days ago that was complete I almost bought it for the $300 they wanted for it. But I do believe that the swap is possible. PS the bolt pattern for the exhaust manifolds is different between the two
Yeah absolutely could have just bought a MagnaFlow or a Borla they are basically built the same way I did this one straight through with absorption material.. but then it wouldn't be a martinbuilt...lol
I'm thinking it would have taken much less time and money to simply purchase an absorption muffler... besides, I am also sure the average person doesn't have a plasma cutter, and or a welder to re fabricate a $100 muffler. nice video, very detailed
I still got the XJ, matter of fact I'll be working on a project this weekend for it. Will be installing a Ruff stuff over the knuckle 1 ton tie rod and ends..
I have found that changing mufflers and EVEN ADDING NEW ONES often do NOTHING for decibels! Instead, you have to understand that humans hear the frequency spectrum inaccurately: we hear bass and high/treble frequencies more so than we perceive the mids , so even though the raspy, shrill highs and the drone in the low end of the exhaust is reduced, the decibels stay around the same as there's still quite a lot of mids left to the tone, but since both extreme ends of the spectrum are lowered, it sounds quieter as the frequency range of the exhaust is more balanced for our ears.
Dumb question but after all the time and resources spent to make this muffler why not just buy a magnaflow muffler of the same design? In the long run that would have been cheaper right?
I didn't spend $120 in materials but yes it is a lot of work and would have been much simpler to just buy a MagnaFlow or Borla Muffler of the same design. Thanks for watching.
Hey Martin, I’m a RUclips subscriber with a problem on my 99’ Grand Cherokee 4.7. Maybe you can help me figure out why it keeps spitting the #5 cylinder intake rocker off. A little history: My father drove down the interstate at 80 mph in second gear @5000 rpm. As a result it had a huge lack of power and idled rough as h*ll! The oil pressure never dropped, it had no abnormal sounds, and the temperature never got past where it regularly runs.(just below 210deg. It started smoking very badly at this point. Since then, I replaced the lifter that was missing the top portion, and the rocker arm as well. After reassembly, it started right up and was still running rough and smoking, so I pulled it back apart only to find the rocker laying under the camshaft off of the valve and lifter. I have it put back in at the moment but I’m wondering what could be causing it to pop out. I did not prime the lifter when I installed it the first time, but I did this time. Could it just be that simple or do I need to look further at something else? The valve appears to be moving properly and the cam has no signs of damage. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
I'm assuming you're not getting any service engine light. I would check the spark plug on that cylinder and do a compression test. Also verify that the valve spring is not broke. Let me know what you find
I pulled the plug and it looks great. I haven’t pulled compression cause I didn’t think it would work being the rocker was off. I just now turned the motor over with the valve cover off and I can hear a “tin” sounding pop when it spins over and the rocker arm is still in place. Also the check engine light is on and has the code for number 5 cylinder misfire. I’m gonna look closer at the valve spring and get back to you.

Did your custom straight-through muffler have less drone than the flowmaster 70? I know they advertise the 70 as being drone free.
You can't beat the 70 for lack of drone. It is a quiet muffler, to begin with. Yes the 70 has no drone.

I have seen videos where they put the stainless steel wool inside the tube and just put some barrier so that the steel wool will not be blown away...

I was taught hot gasses flow faster than "cool" thats why we use thermal tech wrap on exhaust pipes.

That is something for the dyno, hard to feel a few ft. lbs of torque.

I just had one stolen off of one of my WJs here in Vegas and am looking to find an original one; However, I can't find one for the exact year, because they are discontinued. There are 2003 and 2004 converters available but the parts department wasn't able to answer whether or not I would be able to use those. Since you are one of the most talented mechanical engineers I've seen on RUclips and have a lot of experience with this vehicle, I figured I would ask you. Any thoughts on whether or not I would be able to use the newer converters and if not, is there a particular rear cat you can recommend? Thank you in advance!
Thank you. I really appreciate that. I would think that the newer one would work just fine. On my WJ I used a MagnaFlow hi-flow cat. It is a lot cheaper and the thieves won't steal it.

A stupid question, I have one muffler from China and what would happen if I would just strip the inside and put nothing in it. Would I get just basic muffler delete for cheap?
yep, that's what it would be with the illusion of a muffler.
Good day Martin, have a question for you...nor related to exhaust ,but to power. I have a JGC 2005 with a 4.7 i know that the same engine develop quite a bit more since 2008 I believe...as far as I know here are the difference between the two.
1- dual plug head , 2- increase compression , 3- better cylinder head flow , 4- new combustion system (better fit to handle E-85)
just about everything seems centered around those cylinder heads. (Do you think it is possible to swap the newer head onto my 2005 GC. Any information would be greatly appreciated. You have a fan for life. Thanks for all you do. It really helps.

yeah that sounds about right. I believe there are some other changes to like the connecting rods got heavier the Pistons got heavier things like that. I haven't had a real close look at the 08 cylinder heads to compare them. But by looking at from pictures that would seem to me that the combustion chamber CC's has increased. But they're probably increasing compression from the Dome of the Pistons And if that is so you would lose compression by bolting them on your 4.7
Been waiting for one of these engines to show up at Pick-A-Part. There was a cylinder head on eBay a few days ago that was complete I almost bought it for the $300 they wanted for it. But I do believe that the swap is possible.
PS the bolt pattern for the exhaust manifolds is different between the two

Yeah absolutely could have just bought a MagnaFlow or a Borla they are basically built the same way I did this one straight through with absorption material.. but then it wouldn't be a martinbuilt...lol

I really don't know for sure, never had it on a dyno. I have revved it up beyond 6000 rpm, hasn't come apart yet.

It has less drone then before and a little bit quieter Overall. No performance drop
I'm thinking it would have taken much less time and money to simply purchase an absorption muffler... besides, I am also sure the average person doesn't have a plasma cutter, and or a welder to re fabricate a $100 muffler. nice video, very detailed

I have found that changing mufflers and EVEN ADDING NEW ONES often do NOTHING for decibels! Instead, you have to understand that humans hear the frequency spectrum inaccurately: we hear bass and high/treble frequencies more so than we perceive the mids , so even though the raspy, shrill highs and the drone in the low end of the exhaust is reduced, the decibels stay around the same as there's still quite a lot of mids left to the tone, but since both extreme ends of the spectrum are lowered, it sounds quieter as the frequency range of the exhaust is more balanced for our ears.
you know you could have just bought a glass pack muffler and saved a lot of time !

Dumb question but after all the time and resources spent to make this muffler why not just buy a magnaflow muffler of the same design? In the long run that would have been cheaper right?
I didn't spend $120 in materials but yes it is a lot of work and would have been much simpler to just buy a MagnaFlow or Borla Muffler of the same design. Thanks for watching.

Hey Martin, I’m a RUclips subscriber with a problem on my 99’ Grand Cherokee 4.7. Maybe you can help me figure out why it keeps spitting the #5 cylinder intake rocker off.
A little history: My father drove down the interstate at 80 mph in second gear @5000 rpm. As a result it had a huge lack of power and idled rough as h*ll! The oil pressure never dropped, it had no abnormal sounds, and the temperature never got past where it regularly runs.(just below 210deg. It started smoking very badly at this point. Since then, I replaced the lifter that was missing the top portion, and the rocker arm as well. After reassembly, it started right up and was still running rough and smoking, so I pulled it back apart only to find the rocker laying under the camshaft off of the valve and lifter. I have it put back in at the moment but I’m wondering what could be causing it to pop out. I did not prime the lifter when I installed it the first time, but I did this time. Could it just be that simple or do I need to look further at something else? The valve appears to be moving properly and the cam has no signs of damage. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated!
I'm assuming you're not getting any service engine light. I would check the spark plug on that cylinder and do a compression test. Also verify that the valve spring is not broke. Let me know what you find
I pulled the plug and it looks great. I haven’t pulled compression cause I didn’t think it would work being the rocker was off. I just now turned the motor over with the valve cover off and I can hear a “tin” sounding pop when it spins over and the rocker arm is still in place. Also the check engine light is on and has the code for number 5 cylinder misfire. I’m gonna look closer at the valve spring and get back to you.
From what I can see of the valve spring, it does not look broken. I’m worried now that I may have dropped a valve seat.
Gonna do a compression test on in. May take a little time to do.
0 compression on number 5 cylinder.
