I’m a nurse & I almost did the same thing…Had baby in hand & was abt to enter the patient’s room…Something told me to return to the nursery & double check…Wrong baby…As nurses we can become very busy…I was assigned to this new mom for 2 days so I thought I knew her baby & didn’t follow the routine identification to verify I had the correct baby…You can bet I never did that again😐
I walked to to a woman I thought was my mother. I walked up the the wrong car several times. Have pulled up the wrong address. Made wrong turns. Worn clothes inside out. Picked up the wrong prescription. Have been mailed wrong packages. Imagine getting sues for a mistake that you catch and correct very quickly. Everyone makes mistakes at work.
It's a freakin maternity ward, those bracelets are programmed to the nines! these parents are blowing the story way out of proportion. An exhausted nurse who's probably on the 13th hr of a 14 hr shift gave them a baby she meant to give to the other mom, realized her mistake when the bracelet proximity alarm went off and fixed it....we've all handed people one thing when we meant to hand them something else. they feel foolish and guilty for not recognizing their baby so they blame the nurse to feel better.
The security band only goes off if you leave the maternity ward and the nurse is supposed to check the parents and infant ID band before she hands them a baby. Babies faces change from day to day due to swelling or weight loss/gain, taking them a bath could change their appearance. They don't wash all the fluid, blood or anything that came from the birth off until the baby is over 24 hrs old. Also if you had an emergency c-section or baby had to go to nicu then it may take some time to recognize your baby because you only see them for a few minutes. That is why it's important for employees to follow procedure. Look at the ID bands and the ID card on the bassinet.
I was very lucky with both my children. The first one was the only newborn in the hospital with a full head of thick black hair. The second one was the only newborn who weighed 10 lbs with a completely bald head, except for the few strands of blond hair on top. No way you could confuse either of them with a different baby.
I swear this happened to me when my son was born in 1980 they brought a baby girl to my room for feeding time and “ I was like are you sure that this is my baby “ ? They said “ well don’t you know your own baby” and they literally almost had me believing them . I thought that since my labor was so bad that I had just dreamed that I’d had a son ! But , finally she looked at the birth announcement on the baby bed and “ oh my goodness I’ve brought you the wrong baby I’m so sorry “ ! I was thinking what the heck is going on around here I mean please ? I swear this is the truth I still can’t believe that they did that and just how many other times that they may have done that ?
This is happening all too often. I don't think a baby should leave the mother's room after delivery unless for medical emergency. Somehow they need to fit in a DNA screening test once you leave the hospital with your baby or something to that nature. But the ole "Switcheroo" act has got to stop
Happened to my Mom in the 50’s with baby #5. They brought in a nice fat bald headed baby with blond peach fuzz for hair. And my Mom was like no way, get him outa here, he’s not mine!! The nurse tried to reason with her but Mom insisted, my babies are long and skinny and have lots of dark hair. Turns out the last names were 1 letter different.
I had this happen to me but we all had on our identifying bracelets. I didn’t think about suing over it. I also recognized my baby as bald with a big scratch on his nose and the baby I got had hair and no scratch. I just called and said hey…this isn’t my baby and ours bands do not match. DNA tests help with that nowadays. Even if I got the wrong baby I’m not giving the one I got back! Haha Most hospitals check the moms and babies bracelets every time they bring them.
I thought 💭 mom and newborn had ID bracelets and baby name is written on that baby cart ? I remember babies being on display in the nursery and I still was smiling at the wrong baby ? My baby was a few carts down! I felt silly I forgot what my baby looked like all swaddle in that blanket 😌
I see a lot of comments saying these people are overreacting but what if this would've happened to you??? Imagine breastfeeding a baby that's not yours or if the baby had any diseases from birth??? HIV, herpes and hepatitis are all transferred through bodily fluids so you may have just gotten infected by getting the wrong baby. I don't care if it's 2 minutes or 2 months it's a mistake that could have turned out very bad.
My baby was with me the entire time except for a few seconds when the nurse took him just outside of the room to the do their heel prick test. You betcha I stared my child down before he left the room and when he return. Also I could hear him crying the entire time in the hallway so that was a little relief.
Give the Nursing personal a break. They have been through tremendous stress over the last year during the Pandemic and low staff trying to protect babies and mothers from the COVID Virus. They quickly realized the mistake and took the baby and gave the couple their baby.
@Rose Goddess the nurse wasn't medicating or treating anyone so no there was no risk to anyone's life. Assuming she didn't read the bracelet doesn't make your argument strong, because she likely did and accidentally walked into the wrong room. I've been in a maternity ward and know the bracelet alarm likely went off within mins of the baby being removed from the nursery room and not being within a few feet of mom's bracelet. these parents just want attention, absolute ridiculousness to expect a human to not make a human mistake. Too bad the hospital couldn't tell them to shove their whinny complain up you know where.
@Rose Goddess yeah, and I remember a case where a sue happy family had a lawyer who made mistakes left and right, not even thinking about it, while skiing someone else for one mistake. Ridiculous
@Rose Goddess This is not a medical mistake. It had nothing to do with medical. This actually happens often. And how woupd it be putting a baby in any danger? They are regardless leaving with a baby. They were not handing it over to someone who walked in and did not even give birth. The alarms on the bracelet is the safety net for that. Thats why it is not a big deal. Babies especially working in maternity ward with going into different rooms. This happens alot and people laugh about it. Medical mistake would mean a MEDICAL mistake. Like his miss diagnosing, botched surgery, etc. Not taking a baby into the wrong rooms and walking right back. No big deal. The bracelets. It was too someone who gave birth and was leaving with a child anyway. It wasnt like the person they headed the baby to was going to take off and flee the hospital. Like when a cashier gives someone took much money and they try to hurry up and leave before they realize the mistake. No. This was and honest mistake that did not put the baby in any harm or jeopardy.
Hey! I have an interesting question! Do you feel like your intuition felt like there's something wrong, or like, u feel that u don't belong to this family in the first place?
Why is this such a big deal? When women commit paternity fraud and the presumed father finds out years or decades later, he is told "blood doesn't matter."
I'm sure this isn't that traumatic, if you notice right away. I think running out of TP in a one stall uni-sex public restroom is much more nerve-wracking.

God bless you. You did the right thing.😇A nurse like you is a treasure. Thank you.
Keep those babies in your room!
you cant 90% of the time unless you have a private room
I would get a DNA test!!!
Just to Satisfy Myself.
As the Parents have no way
to Know for Sure.
Wait till it's old enough to talk it ends up with a Australia accent
I totally agree with you that's kind of what I said in my comment as well.
Yes they need to take DNA asap.
They need to do the DNA through a third party not from this hospital!.

👍 Yes, that's an Excellent Point 👏
That Hospital Can't be Trusted.
My babies stayed with me the entire time at the hospital so that something like this, or worse, wouldn't happen.
Thankful they realized it before they went home. 🥰😇🙏

Oh,let me guess,the family sees $$$ .
Hell yes sue their butts!
Wondering if I got switched at birth
My mother was horrible to me.
😉🤣🤣
Ikr....😐

WHY do nurses have such long shifts - often 12 hours. It's a recipe for mistakes and disasters!

Thank the lord it was rectified before they had a chance to bond,,this is disgraceful in 2021 ...

A simple mistake, could've happened to anyone, anyone could've done it; it was quickly fixed - that should be end of story.
Not end of story. They need consistent protocol.
What for 2 minutes? Little mistake for 2 minutes. Not like it was 2 weeks. Not news worthy at all. He should be ashamed to be on TV with this.
Might be looking for free college fund
So basically they brought the wrong baby into the room and rectified it minutes later🙄

DNA test, right away.
This is not a big deal. The babies had their armbands, but the adults failed to check them.
Not even the NURSE read the I.D. bracelet on the baby's wrist!!!!????? Aren't they TRAINED to do that!!!??? HORRIFIED!!!!!!!!!
How do you not recognize your own baby
36 hours old.
We don't have nurseries in my neck of the woods. Baby stays with mommy 24/7 rate after birth.

After working in health care many years the truth is everyone makes mistakes. We are human. Just hope it’s not a fatal mistake.
@Rose Goddess its called human error....get a grip, they're not robots.

What state did this switch happen in?
Near Nashville Tennessee.
Everyone should DNA 🧬 test now. I was born in the wrong family too. And they still haven’t fixed it. 😞
Hey! I have an interesting question! Do you feel like your intuition felt like there's something wrong, or like, u feel that u don't belong to this family in the first place?
DISGUSTING~!
Oh, just make a thing out of it 👎

Damn shame

Sue that hospital 😡
I'm sure they will, and you stay away from me
