George is a country legend for sure. His song "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was the turning point for me to explore and embrace county music.

No one better to sing a song like this than the Ole Possum.

That "nursery" verse is what is known as turning the dagger. You don't know it's coming and the song is sad enough already...and BOOM! -- then it gets you. Devastating.

Oh what an icon gone. RIP George. You are certainly going into a huge catalogue, to listen to even half. Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes, It's Friday, He Stopped Loving Her Today, Mustang, and so many many more.

George Jones boycotted the CMA awards in the 90's, because he was supposed to open the show with his new song "Choices", but they wouldn't let him sing the full song.
They ended up getting Alan Jackson to open the show with his hit cover of "Pop A Top". After the solos in that song, the whole band stopped and they started playing the chorus of George Jones' "Choices". The audience immediately stood and applauded, because they knew what was going on. Once they finished, they immediately left the stage, got on their bus and left. It was like a classy way of giving a middle finger to the CMA's for treating a legend like George that way.
The next day Alan appeared on a country music talk show on TNT, and they talked about it. And they had George Jones call into the show and say a few words.. You can see both that performance and that interview by searching "Alan Jackson Choices".
George Jones and Alan Jackson are on my personal Mount Rushmore of favorite artists. They have huge catalogs that I never get tired of listening to.

George Jones was a country legend singer songwriter from the 50's-80's. He struggled with alcoholism & drugs during his life. He was married at one time to fellow country music singer Tammy Wynette & they had some great duets together. He had so many hits such as "White Lightnin'", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Love Bug", "Things Have Gone to Pieces", "The Race Is On", "My Favorite Lies", "I'll Share My World With You", "Take Me", "A Good Year For The Roses," "If My Heart Had Windows" & many others.

Yes, and he was honky tonk. The most sincere genre of country music in my opinion. He had the voice to support with so much rediculously warm tonation, range, and resonation only Freddie Mercury could rival. Yeah, he's my favorite.

Me and a group of my friends got arrested back in 1984 for defending George against a group of hecklers who wouldn't stop jacking with him, as he showed up two hours late and drunk as a skunk for that show. It was at a dive club in East Texas, The Reo Palm Isle. A group of assholes just wouldn't stop messing with him, as he was trying his best to sit on a stool and sing. My group thought they should be showing some respect for Possum, so we intervened on his behalf and wound up spending about six hours in the Gregg County Jail for our efforts. We absolutely did not regret defending him, and the assholes got arrested as well. George's Security people actually explained to the law that we were defending ourselves as well as George, and so my group was able to leave at daylight without paying any fines, but the group of assholes had to wait to go before a judge and bond out. Those were the days!😂😅

Merle and George did a cover of Willie's "Yesterday's Wine" that is top of the line.
Back in the mid 80s I think, my dad looked a lot like Goerge. In a bar one night dome guy swore up amd down that my dad was really George and no matter how much he tried to tell him he wasn't, the more the guy said he was haha. My dad finally just signed a napkin as George Jones and the guy left.

BRO, Some friends and I saw George Jones in concert right after 9/11 happened.
Then a couple years later saw him again, back by popular demand at the same venue.
That ole boy could still sing his heart out, and still looked really good standing up there in the spotlight. It truly was a night to treasure and remember!
In concert he sang my favorite song
"Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes", an extremely well written and soulful hit that turned pure gold for the ole possum!
    THANK YOU!

The creator of King of the Hill had an animated series featuring stories about artists called "Tales from the Tour Bus".
He had an episode on George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Gives you a glimpse of the craziness that allegedly happened through his life and career. It's uploaded on RUclips in multiple part clips.
Take each story with a grain of salt, because they're alleged stories. I noticed a few details in a few people's stories that were factually wrong.

This is a classic by George. Very distinct voice. FYI~ 'The Possum' is George's nickname & you will often hear references in other country songs, by other artists. It's like 'Bocephus' is the nickname Hank Willaims Sr. gave to 'Hank Jr.& you'll hear that one as well. Country artists like to use artists in their lyrics. Sometimes their nickname & sometimes their actual name like Jason Aldean's song 'Dirt Road anthem' where he sings 'swervin' like George Jones'. LOL In fact Scotty McCreary has a song called 'Damn Strait' & he uses a ton of song titles & lyrics from George Strait songs & it's fun trying to catch them all. LOL Great song, by the way.

Even Frank Sinatra admitted that he admired him immensely. George and Tammy made a kind of mini industry out of their courtship, marriage and divorce. A little bit like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. But they weren’t the jet set. 😂

Oh, he certainly meant every word, I'm sure, but it was his own damn fault. He drank a lot and when he drank he'd get mean and his wife, Tammy, just wouldn't put up with it anymore. They did a lot of great duets together even after their divorce, and I think they tried getting back together several times, but he always loved that damn bottle more than he loved her I guess.
