The INSANE History of Netflix's "3 Body Problem"

  • With 3 Body Problem making the rounds as one of Netflix's most watched programs, there is a parallel, sinister story about the intellectual property of the story, and a bizarre string of poisonings perpetrated by a mobile game executive lawyer.
    From the Dark Web, to neurotoxins, burner cell phones, and more... the "story behind the story" of 3 Body Problem is a roller coaster fit for Hollywood itself.

      Hey @UpperEchelon You have to listen to the audiobook series. The show is completely skippable. It MIGHT be okay if you know nothing of the story but some very major scenes in the show have zero weight to them because the circumstances leading up to them are not expounded upon.

    One thing not covered in the video is that there are now two TV show adaptations, covering the first book in the series. The one from Netflix, and the another produced in China, and released in 2023, and now in 2024 also available in the west (with subtitles). It's called "Three-Body" for anyone interested.

    • @d1gw33d

      And its actually pretty good. Quite frankly, its better than what I've seen out of the Netflix show. We get our normal Hollywood-esque crap thrown in, detracting from the story. The Chinese series doesn't assume the audience has a 70 IQ. The Netflix series does.

    • @aah4632
      @aah4632 2 месяца назад +26

      @@d1gw33dso true. I watched the Tencent version and it doesn't make any compromises from the book. That's why it's 30 episodes long. The dynamic between Da Shi (the detective) and Wang Miao (the nano materials scientist) is not easy to replicate when you dilute one character into 5 different ones that are actually also characters that only appear in the sequel books. For a new viewer it might be a fantastic show to binge watch, but it's missing many of the things that make the book series great.

    • @stefenleung
      @stefenleung 2 месяца назад

      it's not that bad. of cos just as expected, Netflix have just raped/ruined another IP. But in the other words, if you're Sci-Fi fans, you should already read the books. if you aint, at least now you know the existence of the books. Now to be fair, dumb down the science of the books to justify the avenge western level; reduce historical facts/background which happened occurred in China and the western won't be interested and won't understand anyways; details doesn't matter except who's fucking who on doomsday; etc. That's a good approach for Netflix adaption.

Lin Qi was known for buying film rights out of the former owner couple who're directors by themselves but very incompetent also treated the author Liu Cixin unfairly. With the help of Xu Yao he managed to pay a high yet acceptable price, and soon transfered the project to real good hands. In one of the documentaries on Tencent's Chinese TV series 'Three-Body', lead producer who worked hard with Lin for years couldn't help crying, said he would never understand Xu's cruelty and their well-recieved season 1 was best comfort for Lin if he could see it in heaven.

      If you like Science *Fantasy* or big words that makes a person sound smart then simpletons will be impressed with Netflix's adaptation.
      If you like *proper* Science Fiction then it is extremely over-rated that has numerous plot holes that (thankfully?) Dumb and Dumber didn't have anything to do with. Go read Asimov, Clarke, or Heinlein for something _good._

      They went a weird direction with it.
      Because the third book runs alongside the timelines of the first and second book they're doing it in chronological order and have made very unrelated characters all best mates from Oxford. Making it less believable.
      Everyone who's important knows each other, the show feels so much less serious.
      They also cut some of the best moments from the book, like where Ye Wenjie kills her husband framing it as an accident. The reveal she's behind the anti-humanity group is also an actual twist in the book.
      The first book ends shortly after the ship getting sliced sequence. There's a really cool bit where you get to see what's happening from a trisolaran perspective. I think it needed 12 episodes and to only focus on the first book to keep the story not feeling stilted. As the original story is too strange to leap through wild plot points.
      After season 8 of game of thrones I'm surprised netflix trust D&D to not rush plots to shit.
