      Imagine you're a civilisation that cannot comprehend lying, as your minds are transparent and you do not even know the baby step of concealing info, let alone lie. And then your follower explains you the concept, in the most dubious way by a story which is a lie made up by humans to tell you do not trust liars. Thats the human equivalent of your friend/follower saying "I can read minds, everyone you met or seen till now can as well"
      I would abandon them on the spot man, especially if you're a whole new different species.

    • @alveolate
      @alveolate 7 месяцев назад +21

      @@timthyfriend you're not really taking your thought experiment far enough... even if your thoughts are transparent because of obligatory telepathy, there should still be ways to avoid thinking of stuff and to "encrypt" stuff. the key here is interpretation: mindreading does not necessarily mean equivalent interpretation.
      my theory is that it is quite impossible for the santi to be unaware of "lying" as a concept (especially after having scanned our wikipedia duh) so this was a likely a ploy by them to get rid of evans and his ETO crew. it also makes a philosophical _casus belli_ so the santi can justify their imminent invasion; but it itself is a lie.

      @@llothar68It’s about 1/3rd through the second book. The last half of the second book and the whole 3rd book are all pretty epic. It's basically just setting the stage for the actual events or the story. Also, the only thing the show did was being forward characters from the second and third book into the first season of the show. They were on the same timelines, but weren't introduced until later books. For instance, Wade wasn't introduced until the third book, but for continuity and “investment into characters” they're done a good job. Also, they've had to make one book character into a few different people, and switched roles here and there. Creative liberties are absolutely necessary to make a series from such an epic trilogy. Overall they've done a good job keeping the story together. Plus, Cixin Liu signed off on it.

      Correcting: The chinese for sophon is 智子, which literally translates as something like "wisdom particle".
      The explanation for the english word "sophon" that makes the most sense to me is, that it is a contraction of "sophia" (greek for wisdom) and proton.
      Now here is where it gets tricky. 智子 as a combination of characters is also used in japanese, for the female name "Tomoko". In the books she is also described as a woman of japanese appearance.
      In the english translation of the book, however, she is consistently and falsely called sophon.
      In conclusion: It's an error in translation.

    Auggie or whatever her name is, is an annoying character to me. I was watching the show, thinking to myself like, just take her tech and ditch her. More of a risk than she needs to be. I can see her switching sides eventually. And the wall breakers using her to get into Saul’s head.

      That was truly annoying to me as well too. But you cant really just take the tech and walk away with it. She leaks it anyways by the end but the main goal is to continue the evolution of tech and come up with new stuff as well. Will be interesting how the stuff plays out with the Wallbreakers couse that is a good point. But also fuck she was so annoying =))))))) I really dont know how a scientist out of all people could be so morally attacked by the idea of using tech to accomplish goals that will or can eventually help your planet from a mass extinction(yes, they killed people not aliens but still...those people were defeatists).

      @@meffycodrin1853 I forgot that part about her leaking it. So now she seems more like a threat if the wall breakers can manipulate her. A big aspect of the next season if it continues with the wall facers will be about one’s capability to keep secrets. Auggie is the perfect candidate to get into Saul’s head and get him to tell his secrets. She’s going down the same path of Dr. Ye, developing a distaste for humans, and I can see her emotions causing her to sympathize for the San-Ti (Trisolarans).

    Just one tiny nuanced correction - the countdowns that the scientists saw were not the time given to finish their work it was a countdown to the scientists STOPPING all work on their specific area of expertise - the book explains it more obviously but these scientists were considered threats and was part of their overall plan to stop or significantly slowdown Earth science

      As a reader from China, changes in gender and race are acceptable, but I feel that the changes in couples are terrible. The original work was originally written by people from different fields and circles, who met, get to know each other, and became acquainted with each other (相遇、相识、相知) due to the Three Body Incident. All of them have become lovers here, and the plot is too shallow and lacks humanistic depth

    Hi I think there's a misinterpretation of the plot at the end where Saul rejected the Wallfacer position. From what I've read from the book, the true meaning seems to be that:
    While Saul naively believes he can deny the position of Wallfacer, the intelligent people around him (UN General Secretary, his liason, his bodyguard) knows full well that there's simply no denying this job, and that everything he (Saul) says or does would be part of 'his plan', including 'appearing to be rejecting the position'.
    Therefore in the book, it almost portrays having this job as some sort of imprisonment, because people never look at you (Saul) the same way anymore. Now they just look at you with full hope and expectations, believing that you have the perfect plan against the San Ti, and the plan is underway.
    Additionally (I feel like they should have made this clear in the show), the reason for why Saul was chosen becomes clear once the viewers think about his past few days a bit - immediately before the UN session, he was the target of an assassination by the San Ti, but why? Immediately before the assassination, he was talking with the late Ye Wenjie (founder of ETO) where she told Saul a very esoteric joke about Einstein and God.
    The 'joke' at the time feels very out-of-place to us as viewers, but looking back, it becomes instantly clear that Ye Wenjie was trying to tell Saul something important, but was concerned that the San Ti might immediately recognise and put a stop to this, thus she resorted to using heavy metaphors and the disguise of a joke.

      I figured they picked Saul because of Will.

    • @ryuxeiii
      @ryuxeiii 8 месяцев назад +98

      @@ReikiRandy okay, but HEAVY SPOILERS AHEAD:
      So as we remember from the show (episode 7), Ye Wenjie basically told a joke that goes like this: Einstein died and went to the Heaven, as a 'newly ascended member of Heaven' Einstein sees a violin and wants to play it (because he loves violin), angels come and warn him not to play because the God wouldn't like it (also God plays saxophone), but Einstein goes ahead and plays violin anyway, surprise surprise - God appears, smashes Einstein's violin, and kicks him in the balls. Angels come over and say 'we told you so'.
      If you remember from earlier episodes, you'd remember Ye Wenjie's disturbing past - she first heard back from a lone pacifist of the San Ti society, warning her not to reply again because the San Ti government would be able to pinpoint the Solar System and come and conquer it. Disillusioned with the Chinese Communists back then and society as a whole, Ye Wenjie ignored the warning and replied to the San Ti anyway, leading to the San Ti embarking on their journey to our Solar System.
      This is very synonymous to the 'angel' in her story, warning her to not 'play the violin' (as in, broadcasting signals and telling everyone around the Solar System that humans exist), and we the humankind as Einstein, a new member of the Heaven (an emerging interstellar civilization (because we can communicate over the stars now)).
      So what about the rest of her joke? God playing saxophone? God not liking us 'playing violin'? God assaulting us and 'smashing our violin'?
      This is the key information that Ye was trying to tell Saul - we as viewers can now kind of guess what would happen: so we broadcast signals and reveal our species, and San Ti people will come and... kill us all? And destroys our... broadcasting stations? But that doesn't make 100% sense because we (now in 2024) know that the San Ti was simply trying to come to Earth to survive, killing us isn't *really* their priority as long as they can settle on Earth.
      An alternative explanation would make much more sense: 'the God' in Ye Wenjie's story isn't really the San Ti. She's talking about civilizations even more advanced than the San Ti, and if we let *them* know of our existence we'd be doomed (probably the Earth and the entire Solar System). This explanation makes more sense when you think about how the San Ti seems to *really* don't want Saul (and the rest of human) to know this, because this provides more leverage for us as humans: we can threaten the San Ti that we're going to broadcast signals all over the universe, deliberately inviting the super advanced civilizations to come and destroy our planets, thus making our planets useless to the San Ti (AND effectively ending their race, since now they truly don't have a proper planet to survive on).
      As for why this would necessarily be true (as in - why was Ye Wenjie certain that any advanced civilization would be hostile to us and would kill us the first chance they get), it goes back to one of the biggest premises of the book, the one about Fermi Paradox, about why there is already an alien civilization literally 4 light years away from us but we didn't know about it until now - it's because the universe is actually teeming with life, civilizations are literally everywhere, but each goes out of their way to hide their existence out of fear of being wiped out by more advanced civilizations.
      As soon as a civ gets advanced enough, they learn the one true tenet of the universe: no matter how advanced you think you are, there are always civilizations out there that are more advanced than yours, beyond your wildest imaginations. And if they lay their eyes on your civilization, with technologies being developed at seemingly light speeds... they don't see a potential ally that can be reasoned with, or be engaged diplomatically; all they see is a huge threat that, is probably already more advanced than them by the time they see them lightyears away (what with all these huge time delays on a galactic scale). Naturally, they would want to preemptively destroy you.
      With this kind of mentality being the natural conclusion, we arrived at the universe that we're in today - a metaphorically 'dark forest' of a universe where everyone hopes nobody finds them, but wants to find everybody else so they can wipe out all potential adversaries.

    I think it will be interesting if Will (Yun Tianming) meets the San-Ti Pacifist who tried to tell Ye Wenjie to not answer. If anyone reads "The Redemption of Time," it is understandable why Sophon told Thomas Wade and Jin that humanity will not be satisfied with the answer of what the San-Ti really looks like (similar to the book fans' reactions). Also, the pests speech Mike Evans gave was an accidental insult to the point it could be used as a racist slur to the San-Ti (Trisolarans). Will's talk about the simplicity of not overthinking or overanalyzing the birds is good because it shows that Will will not go nearly insane or overthink the San-Ti's true forms and treat them as normal sentient beings.

He just said to us "don't respond, if you do, we will come", the Trisolarians communicate with themselves via thoughts, thats why they don't know the concept of lying up until this point. And he also never said that he would keep this a secret from his superiors. He just said he was the first that received the message (and in that sense, could at least warn us to not engage in messages anymore, because that would only confirm our location and existence). He indeed, only told the truth, to us and to his superiors aswell when asked
      I dunno if you read the books already or not, but I highly recommend, this chapter in the books is written from the Trisolarians perspective, and in this case, the Listener who warned us.
