This is definitely it. You can just FEEL the insincerity in it all. Go back and watch a "diverse" movie like The Warriors. Somehow the characters feel natural and they all fit in the world. You can tell the cast wasn't diverse just to check a bunch of boxes but because it fit with the story they wanted to tell. Hell even Demolition Man. Wesley Snipes was the bad guy. Now a days a black actor can't even play a morally ambiguous character, let alone play a villain. A woman can never be portrayed as vulnerable or even as having emotions. That's why there was white washing back then. In my home country in Malaysia, we also have a very, very strong racial distinction when it comes to marketing for a specific race. But the identity dynamics/politics in the US can be a different kind of bizarre. It just so happens that diversity (and outrage) has also become profitable. So it's a mix of a lot of things. There's those being genuine, and there's exploiters. The end result I assume is almost always about business, less so about social change or engineering.

Same here, I used to play games all the time and enjoy them tremendously. Same with movies. Now I go to the theater maybe once every few years and buy movies even less often than that. My game library is chock-full of unplayed games so I could never buy a new game again and play for the next decade or more. Industry of entertainment is in the toilet... luckily all the old games and movies are on disk or directly downloaded onto my hard drive.
I bought more games as a young adult/teen than I do as an older person. Still a gamer, just they don't make anything really worth buying. Theres 6 months of pay to beta test and then they are just done with the game. They move on to the next thing that will make them more money, besides the micro transactions in the previous game.
I think we need a service where gamers can pay developers directly. And I am not talking about the whole studio but rather a couple of artists. All that matters is the interest rate. The Fed kept rates near zero for over a decade, so it was effectively an infinite well of free money, since the borrowing cost was almost nothing. i think it will end as a bubble for the entertrainment industry and lots of companies will end bankrupt some day, they are prioritizing investments and ESG scores over their actual consumers. Gamers are just dumb and they don't know the power their wallets hold over the games they play and they live in a buy, complain and then buy the sequel cycle, but some day those companies will lose investments because they have no consumers anymore and that means no revenue, no growth potential and no investments...

You had banks wanting more mortgages from smaller banks so they could make more mortgage backed securities to sell because they were making bank on it. They didn't care if the mortgages were subprime or B rated when they were tossing them all into AAA rated securities, aka guarantees to not default. Then you had the adjustable rate loans that had reasonable monthly payments for a few years, then they went up exponentially once the adjustable rate kicked in. But these ESG scores in gaming and the entertainment industry reminds me of 2008 because the sellers (banks, video game companies, production companies etc) have forgotten that the customer is the core part of their business. We have game studios chasing investments, ESG scores, and numbers on spreadsheets instead of looking at actual player/customer engagement. Then when these game studios have a game that performs bad they can't fathom why. It HAS to be the customer that's wrong. There's an additional facet to this story: Due to years of US interest rates being nearly zero, many companies were operating purely on investment capital, not from revenue (called a "zombie company"). The ESG scam seems to have grown alongside that trend, possibly as a means of hiding the insolvency of these zombie companies. This screams textbook "financial bubble", if I ever saw it. It's also interesting this seemed to start right after the recession in 2008, as though corrupt investment firms needed a new industry to screw over after they tanked the housing market, like locusts moving from one field to the next.

The problem in media forms in general is constant throughout. There may be slight alterations based on the monetization models, but generally it always is something along the lines of "lore not adhered to", "entire plot points and characters redesigned for DEI and ESG scores", "gameplay almost nonexistent because political message is more important", and "start with beloved series because we know our ideas are terrible and will never have a chance unless we destroy the franchises that will be used popularly against us". I'm telling you as a former Hollywood Network Executive, games, music, videos of all formats, the problems with "woke" and "dei" are the same generally throughout these mediums because the people at the top all know each other, F each other, are intermarried probably somehow by way of 2nd cousins or farther, and plan generations ahead. What culture at large has to do is stop reacting years after its too late and massive amounts of franchises are destroyed. People were calling out "woke nonsense" back in 2013-2014 and were getting reamed with claims like "not enough evidence". By the time we got enough evidence to convince the masses, we were here in the 2020s already. Those of us with the inside knowledge and access are never believed in time. Even now, I'm trying to warn people of what is happening now because they won't believe me on things happening now until the 2030s at earliest.

I was reading a comic from 2014 and I stopped after the second chapter because it went so woke that ended up back in sexist... patriarchy, "man can't do anything" and they were the heroes ffs. yes in the grand scheme of the chapters they were small things but the way the presented their thought process made the tone of the beginning of the story. the fact that the late half of the second chapter is about a guy firing into a procession of woman doesn't help. I would have accepted that in later chapters but how the story was going it didn't help to change the tone that I feel from it.

For me the first sign was Dragon Age 2 in 2011, they made a lot of fuss about having a male gay character in the roster prior to the release, and was the first time that I saw people that dare criticize the game being called homophobe, even when the criticism was unrelated to said character.

Spot on. We tried to warn people about this back in 2016 but were laughed at. Sweet Baby isn't even the only one doing this. Before them, there was Silverstring Media and Square Enix's Ethics Department doing the same thing. Honestly I feel like all the controversies of around 2016 were just an attempt to popularize the idea of hiring companies like Sweet Baby so people with useless degrees could get jobs of being professional Karens. I am SPECIFICALLY reminded of a little article called "Tabletop Gaming has a White Male Terrorist Problem" that was circulated a few years back. Apparently the article combined multiple Facebook and LiveJournal tabletop gaming horror stories from multiple women and claimed they all happened to a single woman who then sent this article to a company and their response was "That's terrible! I'm sorry you had a bad time but...what do you want US to do about it?" and her response was "Hire me and make me the Women's Ambassador to Gaming, if you don't I'll spread this around" and the rest is history. I feel like she likely wasn't the only one using these tactics. What I want to know is where the heck ESG investment CAME from! Supposedly it has been around for like hundreds of years and yet only recently has it become such an absolute mess. What happened THERE?!

Plenty of news made so much more sense just because I knew about that. 2023 was also the year when I had to sit through non-woke people thinking that everything they saw was a result of other companies fearing what happened to Bud Light... Can you imagine how frustrating it was?! ESG dies, no one notices, companies fire DEI hires left and right and everyone is "it's probably thanks to the Bud light boycott"... I swear... so frustrating. I'm not bragging by the way, ESG dying will be the death of wokeness, I don't have to be Einstein to understand that. It's just to point out how frustrating it is to see people go "ooooh, that's why this happened!" when the entire world is about to shift. This whole notion of main characters having to look like you for you to enjoy the entertainment they're featured in is itself racist and narcissistic. Not once did I ever pick up a game and drop it or keep it from being one of my favorites because the main character isn't black.
I feel it should be possible in say a RPG where you have a character creator. That is why I would say a game like Fallout is a better RPG than Mass Effect as you have more options for how your character looks.
I'm white as a sheet and most of my favorite characters either wear an outfit or a piece of armor the entire time not showing any skin, they're not white, or they aren't even human. I never ever really paid attention to how many straight white male characters I played as in video games, I just thought they were really cool and badass and I agreed with their ideals. Their skin color was never once relevant at all.
Saw a white woman with blue hair as the scriptwriter for Kill the Justice League. Wasnt gonna buy the game anyway but that just doubled my likelihood of not buying the game 😂
As i get older, i realize that i'm not the target audience of some game. I don't have to buy games like saint's row and forspoken. i played tiny tina and farcry 6 on a subscription and just could not handle the writing and boredom after an hour, never had that problem with a borderland or farcry game before.
Farcry 6 was just too bloody long by half, just like AC Valhalla. The Ubisoft formula works well in small doses but when you have a massive map absolutely covered in icons it becomes exhausting.

Gearbox went woke on Borderlands 3. Hell they even held a patch back in support of BLM. Not to mention one of the DLC's being about a gay wedding. They also couldn't seem to fix or balance the game in anyway. Splitscreen was never fixed on Xbox, they just ignored it and dropped the directors cut and the recent Tiny Tina game. Stick to Borderlands 2.

The ESG model is almost predetermined to fail if only for the fact that regardless of its intention or even if the postions advocated for are agreeable to all consumers. I'm a math and computer graphics guy, I worked in the game industry for years doing engine and tooling stuff. The DEI hires were largely terrible. Want to know why games are so buggy and unoptimized now a days? Cause the math, graphics, and physics types who just wanted to work on interesting problems never cared about this stuff and are getting pushed out of the industry and being replaced by people who have no idea what they're doing. I left to just do web development. It's boring, but low stress and good pay. Whatever. Hopefully I'll have the mortgage paid off in a few years.

Basically FOMO is your worst enemy. These days don't preorder, or even better wait for at least a month before buying something, especially AAA titles. Wokeness you can detect at day 1 when streamers can show it to you, but if they decide to do something nasty like adding bad microtransactions or nerfing the EXP and credit gain or making the game Pay 2 Win, they will often wait until reviews are in.
This is the problem with videogame companies being publicly traded, they have to please investors by showing perpetual profit growth. There are two primary ways to do that, one is through micro transactions and expansions, the second is by making the game reach a wider number of players, this results in more shallow games with more diversity. A game can hit a lot of social boxes and still be good but that usually comes from studios who still value art rather than profit.
Exactly the reason I never bought the game. Was considering buying it when first announced and even considered getting the remastered version of the first game. But after seeing the race swapped black character I boycotted it all. No doubt Remedy will be enlisting Sweet Baby Inc for the Max Payne remakes ....so that's another that will almost certainly be an instant boycott.

The narrative in Division 2 certainly has gone down this road. The vast majority of strong characters and leadership is female with a load “check boxes” ticked along the way. This just makes me cherish gaming in my childhood even more (90s through early 2000s).Back then, games came out finished, a lot of them had originality, no micro-transactions, no pay to play, and no plolitical agendas. I could play games to eacape the world for a few hours a day.

I think the complaints about being "Woke" is not necessarily about the mere fact that stuff like gay people and transgender-identifying people exist, it's how they are shown. Politics used to be alluded to in dialogues and story choices. They didn't shove flags in the face of anyone, or obviously state things like: "That doesn't matter! We need to support the trans-identifying community!" -in a world about zombies where there are some other things that would probably be more important to talk about (just making up an example here) The shoe-horned writing is what makes it offensive, and that comes because the pandering to those groups needs to be obvious enough for the average terminally-online Twitter/Reddit user to comprehend, so they don't whine and lose dollars from those investors that get spooked so easily. It's an unfortunate world, but a world we are likely stuck in because of how fandomized these kinds of movements have become. It won't be enough to just allude with a similar example anymore.

A game can have an all white cast talking about how great they are for being white or for all being straight and it wouldn't fit most ppls definition of woke. DEI or ESG is the old model, which is also pushed by the WEF and their 2030 agenda. Many people still think it's a "conspiracy theory", however, the conspiracy is an open one with literature easily available. Back to my first comment though, the new model is run under diversity and sustainability. This move seems to be in response to the increased awareness of the groups global goals...some of which are to reduce the population, and reduce carbon in the environment. Use your imagination for how they might accomplish that. Either way Blackrock, Vanguard and other investment firms are being used as tools for change by powerful think tanks funded by very influential and obscure individuals and groups.
In addition, several annual reports show that these companies are actually scaling back on their ESG investments. The return is no longer what it used to be and they see no reason to invest as heavily into what amounts to looking good.

That's what I've felt for years. Using marginalised groups as check boxes. Tokenism. It feels dishonest, and sometimes you can see it clearly when the writing seems very shoe horned. Hearing they're doing it literally for profit just makes it far worse than virtue signalling. It's a disrespect to the groups they're pretending to care about.
This is definitely it. You can just FEEL the insincerity in it all. Go back and watch a "diverse" movie like The Warriors. Somehow the characters feel natural and they all fit in the world. You can tell the cast wasn't diverse just to check a bunch of boxes but because it fit with the story they wanted to tell. Hell even Demolition Man. Wesley Snipes was the bad guy. Now a days a black actor can't even play a morally ambiguous character, let alone play a villain. A woman can never be portrayed as vulnerable or even as having emotions.
It makes all media feel like it's completely disconnected from reality and it's just so obvious the entire story is to push an agenda rather than to tell a good story.
@user-en7ll3og6c there's a nuance to it. It used to be they wanted to cast white actors because they didn't believe minority actors could sell. It's always been political that way. That's why there was white washing back then. In my home country in Malaysia, we also have a very, very strong racial distinction when it comes to marketing for a specific race. But the identity dynamics/politics in the US can be a different kind of bizarre.
It just so happens that diversity (and outrage) has also become profitable. So it's a mix of a lot of things. There's those being genuine, and there's exploiters. The end result I assume is almost always about business, less so about social change or engineering.
I've said it over and over for the past few years and not enough people hear me. Corporations do NOT care about you as a human being. You are a life support system for a wallet. If they claim to care its because thats how their marketing team saw a way to make even more money off you. They lie. They lie constantly. I used to spend thousands on games and movies. I no longer buy movies and buy maybe 6 games a year on sale. Those games are mostly indie titles.
Same here, I used to play games all the time and enjoy them tremendously. Same with movies. Now I go to the theater maybe once every few years and buy movies even less often than that. My game library is chock-full of unplayed games so I could never buy a new game again and play for the next decade or more. Industry of entertainment is in the toilet... luckily all the old games and movies are on disk or directly downloaded onto my hard drive.

I bought more games as a young adult/teen than I do as an older person. Still a gamer, just they don't make anything really worth buying. Theres 6 months of pay to beta test and then they are just done with the game. They move on to the next thing that will make them more money, besides the micro transactions in the previous game.
I think we need a service where gamers can pay developers directly. And I am not talking about the whole studio but rather a couple of artists. You had banks wanting more mortgages from smaller banks so they could make more mortgage backed securities to sell because they were making bank on it. They didn't care if the mortgages were subprime or B rated when they were tossing them all into AAA rated securities, aka guarantees to not default.
Then you had the adjustable rate loans that had reasonable monthly payments for a few years, then they went up exponentially once the adjustable rate kicked in.

The problem in media forms in general is constant throughout.
There may be slight alterations based on the monetization models, but generally it always is something along the lines of "lore not adhered to", "entire plot points and characters redesigned for DEI and ESG scores", "gameplay almost nonexistent because political message is more important", and "start with beloved series because we know our ideas are terrible and will never have a chance unless we destroy the franchises that will be used popularly against us".
I'm telling you as a former Hollywood Network Executive, games, music, videos of all formats, the problems with "woke" and "dei" are the same generally throughout these mediums because the people at the top all know each other, F each other, are intermarried probably somehow by way of 2nd cousins or farther, and plan generations ahead.
What culture at large has to do is stop reacting years after its too late and massive amounts of franchises are destroyed. People were calling out "woke nonsense" back in 2013-2014 and were getting reamed with claims like "not enough evidence". I was reading a comic from 2014 and I stopped after the second chapter because it went so woke that ended up back in sexist... patriarchy, "man can't do anything" and they were the heroes ffs. yes in the grand scheme of the chapters they were small things but the way the presented their thought process made the tone of the beginning of the story. the fact that the late half of the second chapter is about a guy firing into a procession of woman doesn't help. I would have accepted that in later chapters but how the story was going it didn't help to change the tone that I feel from it.

I'm sorry you had a bad time but...what do you want US to do about it?" and her response was "Hire me and make me the Women's Ambassador to Gaming, if you don't I'll spread this around" and the rest is history. I feel like she likely wasn't the only one using these tactics.

I feel it should be possible in say a RPG where you have a character creator. That is why I would say a game like Fallout is a better RPG than Mass Effect as you have more options for how your character looks.
I'm white as a sheet and most of my favorite characters either wear an outfit or a piece of armor the entire time not showing any skin, they're not white, or they aren't even human. I never ever really paid attention to how many straight white male characters I played as in video games, I just thought they were really cool and badass and I agreed with their ideals. Their skin color was never once relevant at all.

As i get older, i realize that i'm not the target audience of some game. I don't have to buy games like saint's row and forspoken. i played tiny tina and farcry 6 on a subscription and just could not handle the writing and boredom after an hour, never had that problem with a borderland or farcry game before.
It getting harder to avoid it.
I find lately I'm playing games that don't have writing, like factorio and terraria.
Farcry 6 was just too bloody long by half, just like AC Valhalla. The Ubisoft formula works well in small doses but when you have a massive map absolutely covered in icons it becomes exhausting.

Gearbox went woke on Borderlands 3. Hell they even held a patch back in support of BLM.

I'm a math and computer graphics guy, I worked in the game industry for years doing engine and tooling stuff. The DEI hires were largely terrible. Want to know why games are so buggy and unoptimized now a days? Cause the math, graphics, and physics types who just wanted to work on interesting problems never cared about this stuff and are getting pushed out of the industry and being replaced by people who have no idea what they're doing. I left to just do web development. It's boring, but low stress and good pay. Whatever. Hopefully I'll have the mortgage paid off in a few years.

Basically FOMO is your worst enemy. These days don't preorder, or even better wait for at least a month before buying something, especially AAA titles. Wokeness you can detect at day 1 when streamers can show it to you, but if they decide to do something nasty like adding bad microtransactions or nerfing the EXP and credit gain or making the game Pay 2 Win, they will often wait until reviews are in.
If I even suspect a game is going to give me a lecture, I'm quite happy to skip it. And if I REALLY want to play it, I buy it second hand.
This is the problem with videogame companies being publicly traded, they have to please investors by showing perpetual profit growth. There are two primary ways to do that, one is through micro transactions and expansions, the second is by making the game reach a wider number of players, this results in more shallow games with more diversity.
A game can hit a lot of social boxes and still be good but that usually comes from studios who still value art rather than profit.

Exactly the reason I never bought the game. Was considering buying it when first announced and even considered getting the remastered version of the first game. But after seeing the race swapped black character I boycotted it all.
No doubt Remedy will be enlisting Sweet Baby Inc for the Max Payne remakes ....so that's another that will almost certainly be an instant boycott.

The narrative in Division 2 certainly has gone down this road. The vast majority of strong characters and leadership is female with a load “check boxes” ticked along the way. Most of the men that are in leadership are wet, weak noodles or ate too many waffles for breakfast. It’s like watching the 80’s sitcoms all over again.
The implication of this analysis is scary and it’s only going to get worse.

As a lifelong gamer I cannot recommend one single ubisoft game. All the scummy ubisoft stuff aside the games aren't even good enough to pirate.

ESG doesn't accomplish what it's supposedly meant to do, it just ruins games by encouraging people to make soulless garbage that checks boxes instead of making art. This just makes me cherish gaming in my childhood even more (90s through early 2000s).Back then, games came out finished, a lot of them had originality, no micro-transactions, no pay to play, and no plolitical agendas. I could play games to eacape the world for a few hours a day.
Even if Blackrock were to go away I doubt things would change much.
Developers took a stand against gamers and in support of the press during gamergate; in their eyes gamers are dead and should not be catered to in any way. They'll keep putting out cringe as long as it helps them virtue signal. It's not just the people at the top doing it for the money, the workers themselves are woke cultists who believe in the cause and spend too much time on social media.

A lot of people like to pretend this isn't happening, I think GTA VI is going to open a lot of eyes. It's one of the few big games that the majority of gamers are actually looking forward to, and they're absolutely not prepared for how drastic of a change it's going to be for the franchise. Much like Suicide Squad, as beloved studios release their next games, people are going to realize that the actual developers who's work they loved are now long gone

I think the complaints about being "Woke" is not necessarily about the mere fact that stuff like gay people and transgender-identifying people exist, it's how they are shown.
Politics used to be alluded to in dialogues and story choices. They didn't shove flags in the face of anyone, or obviously state things like:
"That doesn't matter! We need to support the trans-identifying community!" -in a world about zombies where there are some other things that would probably be more important to talk about (just making up an example here)
The shoe-horned writing is what makes it offensive, and that comes because the pandering to those groups needs to be obvious enough for the average terminally-online Twitter/Reddit user to comprehend, so they don't whine and lose dollars from those investors that get spooked so easily.
It's an unfortunate world, but a world we are likely stuck in because of how fandomized these kinds of movements have become. It won't be enough to just allude with a similar example anymore.

A game can have an all white cast talking about how great they are for being white or for all being straight and it wouldn't fit most ppls definition of woke.
From what I can tell, games have been struggling with bad writing, poor optimization, and at times, just buggy and released incomplete. None of that is inherent to having diverse characters.
Also, have you seen what ppl have been calling woke? People were calling GTA 6 woke solely for having protags that weren't male and ppl have been calling the HTTYD live action movie woke because Astrid is only 3/4th white and not Nordic enough.
I feel like there wouldn't be so much disagreement if ppl who use the term "woke" didn't vary from obvious racists to people who notice many games are shoeing in diversity.

DEI or ESG is the old model, which is also pushed by the WEF and their 2030 agenda. Many people still think it's a "conspiracy theory", however, the conspiracy is an open one with literature easily available.
Back to my first comment though, the new model is run under diversity and sustainability. This move seems to be in response to the increased awareness of the groups global goals...some of which are to reduce the population, and reduce carbon in the environment. Use your imagination for how they might accomplish that. Either way Blackrock, Vanguard and other investment firms are being used as tools for change by powerful think tanks funded by very influential and obscure individuals and groups.
In addition, several annual reports show that these companies are actually scaling back on their ESG investments. The return is no longer what it used to be and they see no reason to invest as heavily into what amounts to looking good.
I really don't get why representation matters that much. As an asian, we didn't care much if asians are represented at all in video games, after all it's western media

but those games are the exception, and I wouldn’t have felt any different about either one if the main character was some other ethnicity. I don’t think “Oh yeah, he’s Mario! He’s White and American like me!” when I play a Mario game. I just care that they’re good games.
