The way you said *krøller eller ej* was spot on, good job.
I loved Only Teardrops, and HIGHER GROUND DESERVED MORE!
Higher Ground did deserve more. But ever since the Jury have had such an impact on who wins, half of the songs who deserve better ranking gets left in the dust by the jury, because "They dont get it" I still remember Poland with Color Of Your Life - Michał Szpak, they got nothing from the jury but basically won the peoples vote. How can Eurovision not see that something is wrong with their voting then?
When the population agrees but the jury doesn't? it has really just fucked up the whole show :(
I went to the same school as Emilie de forest
@@TKDDLJ09 DR ville nok ikke have, at Danmark skulle vinde ........så de havde tippet juryen.
@@Maridun50 hmm. Who knows.
Hørte da også lige at man kan stemme 20 gange i aften og så sagde vores kommentatorer at der er andre regler for os? Hvordan kan der være andre regler for os? 😂
Im from Denmark under stjernerne på himlen is a Very Big song in Denmark
IKR ITS SO GOOD AAAAA
Du skal huske at gøre man kan se hvad der R dansk og hvad der ikke er når den skifter ved (is)
I like the one with Rasmus Seebach more tho
Ja
I am also from Denmark. And the song is so good🇩🇰
I love Emmelie and only teardrops so much. Thanks Denmark
your welcome. we dont hear it that often in denmark tho
Sebastian Brundsgaard: I still hear it almost every day. Seriously, I never get tired of it
your welcome .
you are welcome
Your welcome.
8:53 Wow.... - It's scary how well you pronounced that.
Aww, thanks :)
Haha, so true!
@@ESCunited For a sec i though you were danish! xD
Nope, but I've been to Denmark plenty :D
det tænkte jeg også... fik et chok
you're right "vi maler byen rød" is a classic here in denmark stil in 2018 everyone knows that song
not really
True a song everyone in Denmark know
The 1962 song which you thought sounded like a lullaby, actually is a lullaby 😊 It's called VUGGEVISE (LULLABY) 😉
Ahhh, that is neat...I had no idea. I'm so good at this ;)
Higher ground was such a badass viking song
There was absolutely NOTHING that resembled anything viking in that song.
I meant the sound. Go listen to Wardruna or Heilung, THEN tell me that i am wrong.
@@SebastianRRasmussen okay. You're wrong
@@youshouldsubscribetothis6176 Best argument ever...
Israel song was a SJW SHIT SONG IT SUCK'S ASS 👈🧐
Like if you are from Denmark (like hvis du er fra Danmark👍🏻😁, for jeg er)
Også mig
Same
Jeg er også fra Danmark 🇩🇰
🇩🇰
Hvad er Danmark?
"under stjernerne på himlen" is like a song you would sing for your children when they were going to sleep since the song is about Tommy putting his son to bed and telling him that they always will be together in his dreams
Some of the old danish songs r popular in Denmark
2:13 "they kissed on stage.." hahah I'm dead of laughing
PAUSE. You pronounced 'krøller' PERFECTLY!
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!
Enig
Han totalt som en dansker da han sagde det hahah
Wait a second . Isnt he danish ? everything about him says Danish ?`..
Yes
soliders of love is totally a guilty pleasure for me
same
You are SO spot on! I applause your insight in the different songs, although you have NO idea what they are singing - but you guess it from the way they are singing and acting. Lots of love to you from Denmark
I completely disagree in your 2013 danish entry opinion ....it was my winner that year and its one of my favorite ESC songs
I know a lot of people like it and that is okay. :)
Yes, we wun that year....hehe
I think this years entry was great. I was giggling seeing them reacting to Hungary's entry in the behind the scenes video. But it showed their roots, which I love. I would love him to come back next year or in the future.
Tommy Seebach was (and arguably is) a big legend in Denmark! He's extremely underrated in my opinion. And Debbie Cameron in with him makes it even more amazing! (I can talk about this forever). The entry from 1957 is one of my personal favorites (along with 1963) And I totally agree, we don't like that broadcaster who didn't like Eurovision and decided not to play it in those 12 years (honestly, I'm very mad at him and I was born 38 years after 1966)
1978 - I've always thought that Mabel's song deserved better, it was very good! Of course, when you don't understand Danish, it can be quite difficult to understand the context, but basically it's about a person asking himself and his doctor why he suddenly feels 'sick' or weird inside. And it's basically because of love - thus "Boom Boom" because that's how the heart goes.
The woman from Hot eyes in the 1988 performance was indeed VERY pregnant - in the eigth month. I believe there were doctors backstage to be ready if she got into labor.
1989 with Birthe Kjær - oh yes, she's an absolute legend.
1990 with Lonne Devantier - it's a guilty pleasure of mine, I can't help but love her and the performance.
1991 - Anders Frandsen - he's deeply underrated in my opinion! It's a cute song about love, yes maybe cliche, but he deserved better.
1993 - Tommy Seebach is back at it again. It's a very good song, but I understand why it ddidn't do very well. I can recommend listening to his son's version of it though! "Rasmus Seebach - under stjernene på himlen"
1995 - very cute and lovely!
I have nothing good to say about the years 1996-1999 lol, but the Olsen Brothers in 2002 is amazing! As you said, it was an underdog, and I've always know that we (Denmark) are underdogs. But it's an amazing song and also so great in Danish, its called "Under et stjerneskud". 2001 is also just very lovely!
I have a HUUUUGE soft spot for the 2005 performance, "Talking to you". Jacob Sveistrup has an amazing voice and again, the danish version is soooo good. It's called "Tænder på dig".
2010 and 2011 are both good entries, which I like quite a bit.
2012 version got a low ranking, which was quite unfortunate.. It's quite a good song, I liked it, but I can also see that there was a huge competition that year..
2013 - well, it's a winner and this was the song which drew me into the whole Eurovision world. I remember the moment it won, I was ecstatic and out of myself. I've always loved this song, the flute never bothered me. But I respect your opinion.
The year 2014 to 2016 is just foolish, in my opinion lol.
I did like the 2017 version with Anja - I've listened to some of her singing, and she is a force to be reckoned with! What a voice!
2018 - I regained my viking acenstry, so amazing and just what Eurovision needed.
I know this was up until 2018, but I kinda want to rank the next 3 songs (to 2021).
2019 - Leonora did such a great job and managed to sing in 4 languages (English, french, german and danish) - I was so proud of her! And it was a "happy go lucky song"!
2020 - well, no countries participated, so I wouldn't know how Ben and Tan would have done with their song "Yes". I grew to like it quite a bit though - probably wouldn't have reached the top 10, but maybe/at least to the finals.
And last but not least, 2021 with Fyr & Flamme... I honestly hated the song in the beginning and didn't want it to win.. But it did.. And then I accepted it.. Then I started to listen to it some more.. And now I love it! It really brings back that 80's vibe, that's been missing in Eurovision since.. well, since the 80's... It's different from all the songs this year AND it's sung entirely in Danish, which hasn't been done since 1997. So I am rooting for this song 100%
Fux i was looking for videos about denmark! But then i found you! :o Damn!!
It's still funny how "I'm turned on by you" got translated into "I'm talking to you"
A fun fact about Higher Ground, is that the background singing, is actually Icelandic, as that is the language that is closest to the old "Norse" language the vikings are believed to have spoken, just thought it was a fun thing to share with everyone here.
Well, I didn't hear all songs of Denmark until now. I think Denmark 2000 "Fly on the wings of love" was a beautiful winner song.
I'm surprised about the entry of 1979, I love it 😆. Their 80's entries are catchy 🙂
yumusic they actually changed the song to english when they Wont in Denmark the original name is
Smuk som et stjerneskud
1962 - "Vuggevise", when you say it sounds like a lullaby, that makes complete sense since the title of the song means lullaby in danish.
1982 - "Video video", whaaat. No that song is so catchy! To this day you can yell "Video video!" anywhere and everyone will respond "Video! Den kører nat og daaag". I loved that song way before I even knew it had been in eurovision.
1989 - "Vi maler byen rød" Ah love that one! Yes it is a classic here!
Also I loved "Only teardrops" but of course there can never be a song that suits everybody's preference.
I love that one also...Anyway, if there is ever a song that EVERYONE likes, I want to hear it so I can enjoy it too. :)

2005 original title turned on by you (Danish version so much better the lyrics make sense :-))
well personally I just think that music just kind of diet after that not just in Eurovision but in the entire country
The "ball" is spinning? LOL. Maybe globe is more accurate.
The entry from 2001 was originally a Danish song at the national selection but for the Eurovision English lyrics were used instead. It might just be due to the fact that I'm Danish but I personally prefer the Danish language version of that song - it is still quite popular here.
Btw, for a long while this was quite normal for the Nordic countries - having a song originally being in the native language at the national selection and then having it changed into an English language version for the Eurovision 😊

25:24 They're saying "taka stökk til hærri jörð" which means "take a leap to higher ground" in icelandic (or it should really be "taka stökk á hærri jörð").
What?
I love how the english version of the 2005 song is like “I’m talking to you, through my heart. Talking to you, girl, just tell me where to start” (soooo romantic)
And then the danish version is like “Jeg tænder på dig, inden i. Tænder på os to, og noget jeg ikke tør’ sige”
Which basically means: “You turn me on inside. I’m turned on by us and something that I don’t dare to say”
This is really cool. ""Fra Mols Til Skagen" - that's so amusing, everybody in Denmark thought it would flop immensely at Eurovision.
I really like your comments, could't agree more - I'm danish myself. It's amazing how you seem to understand the culture. You're so right in many things, for example about Birthe Kjær - the song is a classic in Denmark, and Tommy Seebach was and is still, especially through his son, a big name i Denmark. Hot eyes and Birthe Kjær are played at many family events, as well as a lot of other up-beat danish music from the 80's. Thank you so much for your beautiful comments
It's just great to see that Denmark had great songs four years in a row! With the years being 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016
Love all of those four songs
As a Dane born in 1995 here's the songs I consider the most popular eurovision songs based on popularity in media and those I personally remember hearing growing up:
1957: Skibet skal sejle i nat (Translation: The ship is sailing tonight)
1963: Dansevise (Translation: The dancing song)
1978: Boom Boom
1979: Disco Tango
1982: Video Video
1983: Kloden drejer (Translation: The globe is rotating)
1984: Det' lige det (Translation: That's the thing)
1989: Vi maler byen rød (Translation: We're painting the town red)
1990: Hallo Hallo
2000: Fly on the wings of love (Original titel: Smuk som et stjerneskud - meaning Beautiful like a shooting star)
2001: Never ever gonna let you go (Original titel: Ved du hva hun sagde - meaning Do you know what she said)
2005: Talking to you (Original titel: Tænder på dig - meaning You're turning me on)
2010: In a moment like this
2013: Only teardrops
2014: Cliche love song
2016: Soldiers of love
2018: Higher ground
Personal top 10:
1. Det' lige det
2. Dansevise
3. Only teardrops
4. Higher ground
5. Hallo Hallo
6. Cliche love song
7. Fly on the wings of love
8. Talking to you
9. Where I am
10. Kloden drejer
i love this video, and the that Denmark gets a bit of fame:) - u are spot on in what u say, Denmark have always ben the underdog, so we do things the "fun and crazy" way:):):)
Underdogs ... Like winning the European Football Championship in 1992 almost wearing bathing shoes.
I love our song from this year, 2018!
Flemming Jørgensen from 1980 became a huge name, also called "Bamse." (Teddybear...)
Where are you from?
Thanks to watching this video, I checked out the 1995 entry and love it! It's very haunting and ethereal, and her voice has just the right little emotional "break" in it without being melodramatic.
Regarding "Video Video":
I don't know the full story, but I remember hearing that Brixx were forced to annunciate the word "video" properly for Eurovision, while they normally sang it using a shorter, colloquial prounciation (basically "Vee-joe") twice, followed by one full pronunciation ("Vee-deh-oh"). The chorus is much more memorable with both pronunciations.
Great review :-D
1963 is one of my favourite winners ❤️
As a late 80's child, I had the "pleasure" of growing up in the 90's when we Danes started doing our own rap music, and most of it sounded just as bad (if not worse) than the ESC 96 entry. It was usually some 30+ guy trying to get "cool" with the teens, but usually ended up being loved by children with lyrics like "I am cool and I drink soda". Sure, there were some good artists, but the 90's in general was a very bad era for rap music in Denmark.
LOL--nowadays people would get in trouble for recommending that kids drink soda (at least here in the US)!
meanwhile we made an ode to the best soda - Faxa kondi ruclips.net/video/TNlg7p7hiWU/видео.html
Can we just take our time to appreciate how well he pronounced “krøller eller ej”?
I love my neighbor Denmark!
Agree with your analysis about 2011 as a whole.. it was a forgettable year for songs. And Denmark's song reminded me of 'Romper Room!'
Favorites: 1957, 1963, 1978,1979, 1980 ( very tender!), 1981, 1982 ( Video Video is SO 80's!), all of Hot Eyes hits, Vi maler byen rød... classic! 1993,1995, the Danish version of 'Fly on the Wings of Love', DQ, 2010 (
Under stjernerne pa himlen is the most beautiful lullaby composed ever. And I mean this in a very positive way. The lyrics and melody are beautiful.
My favourite entries from Denmark was 2000, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2018. The song from 2011 got so much criticism because it sounds almost exactly like a Swedish song from 2006 called "Sing For Me" by Andreas Johnson. Many Swedish people (including myself) was a bit annoyed that the song (from 2011) wasn´t disqualified from esc, because the likeness is so similar it sounds like it´s the same song.
1980 Flemming “Bamse” Jørgensen rip Bamse means teddy. Miss him so Much
Their 1995 entry is the most enjoyable one for me and it feels like a timeless tune. It has that magic to it, the composition, the tempo, the backing vocalists, everything works. 2000 is also great, I'm just a little off-put by the nasal voices. 1963 and 2018 are pretty cool too. Only Teardrops is okay to me, I had it in 7th place in 2013.
So many of these are very popular songs with many Danes and even younger generations know a lot of these. Some even being played at parties because almost everyone is guaranteed to know them.
1993 - Tommy Seebach - "Under stjernene på himlen" (Under the stars at the sky) is a very loved song in Denmark. Tommy Seebachs son, Rasmus Seebach is one of nowdays most famous singers in Denmark. I cannot count how many hits he made, and he is for sure a party starter. Some years ago he recorded this song too, and it instantly became a hit again. The song was originaly a lullubye he song to his children at night.
if i'm correct the song from 1993 Under stjernerne på himlen is a really known song in Denmark, at least for those who are from the year 2003 and lower
Honestly, today, Tommy Seebach's "Under stjernerne på himlen" ("Under the stars in the heaven") is one of the most famous, beloved, classic songs. Especially since his son, Rasmus Seebach (another huge Danish music name here) began singing in memory of his late father, also to remind us that Tommy did not have such a great life, and was even an outcast in the music industry in some ways, to show us that he had quality art in him. And love.
Hey! Very nice video! Keep it up 😄
What do you think about the Danish song this year?
And as I said very good video. I enjoyed every second 😃👍🏼
Love Denmark this year, it's in my Top 10.
@@ESCunited You thought it was good, the televoters thought it was good, the jury thought it was good, the traditional Eurovision fans thought it was bad.
1978 - one of the members later became a heavy rock singer in USA. Mike Tramp from White Lion.
The last song was about Denmark and Vikings and how Denmark was back In time
Good video!!!!
I personally loved 2016, 2017, and 2018. I also love 1962, 1963, 1965, 1981, 1982, 1985, 1991, 1993, and 1995. I really wish they had qualified in 1996 because that song was just beautiful
1989 - Birthe Kjær - "Vi maler byen rød". The title is a danish slang expression for having a good party. Birthe is one of Denmarks most famous singers, and still going strong giving concerts in an age about 70 years old. She is both popular among old, middle aged and young people in Denmark. This song is often played at private parties througout the country.
Thanks for enjoying our eurovision songs. (Yes, i'm from Denmark)
Only Teardrops was such a deserved winner, my favourite winner of the 21st century by miles.
My personal favourite are 1995, 2000, 2006, 2013, 2014 and 2018.
I think “Higher Ground” is my FAVOURITE song EVER! It SCREAMS vikings which is extreamly Danish!
Oh, I have this Italian friend who visits Scandinavian countries quite so often and says: "Those Danes, dirty and happy. The happiest of all."
I live in Denmark and i’m also Danish, so thank you for reacting to our music for Eurovision.
I live in Denmark too
Its so fun to se my old guitar teatcher Jacob sveistrup, him with the song “takling to you”🤣
1960, the one ou called oldfashioned, is called "that was a lovely time". She is dressed like someone from the 1890's or thereabout.
Yes Tommy Seebach was big in Denmark, his son Rasmus Seebach is big in Denmark too, he is also an musician
Thank you✨✨✨✨
It's funny how you thought the 1962 song sounded like a lullaby, because the Danish title of the song translates to Lullaby.
The 2005, 2008 and 2009 songs are Perfect!! Some of my all time favorites
Thank you Denmark ♥
@ 16:34 - one of the best things ever was when 2 of Rasmussen's backup Viking guys started singing this in Danish, a capella and in harmony, during an interview (you can find it on ESC Today on Facebook)!
You're so right about Teardrops, Matt. I totally agree with you.
My two favourites are 1963 (groundbreaking in ESC terms imo) and 1995 (mesmerising and beautiful)
The 1993 is the biggest of all the songs in denmark, and his son sang it to. His son is also one of the most famous singers in denmark
Actually "Kirsten og Søren/Hot Eyes") in 1985 - the boy is actually Sørens daughter "Lea" and she was about 9 years old at that time....
My favorite entries from my country are 1957, 1963 and 1995. And I still have a soft spot for Anders Frandsen from 1991, knowing of his tragic death, and the family covering up his homosexuality..
While I love the upbeat playful songs, there is just something about feeling like you're getting serenaded in Danish that makes me love the slow oldies like "Angelique" and "Lige der hvor hjertet slår"
When you said Krøller eller ej at 8:53 it actually sounds like you was from Denmark xD The way you pronounced it was so good!
I had the exact thought about Suitcase. Absolutely loved that song. I think it would have easily qualified.
Some comments:
I find 1997 not that bad. The backing vocal part is catchy.
I can see why the juries saved Denmark in 2009. The melody sounds decent to me and I don't mind his voice.
2012 song didn't work on the big Eurovision stage, but there's some charm to it. I low-key like it.
In 2013, Denmark was not my personal winner (predictable song structure and too repetitive), but once I saw the performance I knew it would win. The staging was well-thought out and stood out in a ballad-heavy year, besides having a strong pop melody.
2014 is almost like a Bruno Mars parody, but it's fun, super catchy and well-performed!
2016 gets more hate than it deserves in my opinion. It wasn't that good, but the melody is somewhat catchy still.
The one in 1993 is litteraly one of My favorate songs!
(Dont mind My grammer, im from Denmark in 5th grade)
I don't know how you CAN'T like Only teardrops!!!! It's like the BEST song EVER!!!! Btw I'm from denmark (and Emmelie is my aunts best friend)
"Jeg rev et blad ud af min dagbog" means "I ripped a page out of my diary" (more other less translated directly. A classic, of older music history, I have to admit that I as Dane know less of, than the previous one from '57.
- Try to listen, when the chorous is sang, then you get an idea of how it's pronounced
"Vuggevise" IS a lullaby...
Yes, Tommy Seebach was a big name in Danish music history. He did have a few very well known songs, if they didn't reach the hights of "hits". His son, Rasmus Seebach, is in the music business today.
Try to see if you can find the recording of the Danish songcontest version of "Kloden Drejer". This little jump she does, is today called a "Shrimp jump". I think the story was that she didn't have any coreography to begin with, and then she got told to do this little jump. It's cute
I think, if I remember correctly, Aud Wilken were in traditional folksuite...but that could as well have been at the Danish contest. And yes, Birthe Kjær, is a great name in Denmark. She has made versions in Danish of several songs from Eurovision through the years as well as some of her own
Frandsen, did sing greatly.
When will you react to 1996 Audio Pre-Qualification Songs?
Whilst it's true that Denmark sent the song "Kun med dig" - Dorthe Andersen & Martin Loft to the 1996 audio qualifier, it failed to qualify and the official ESC website does not include it in Denmark's participation history.
I just stumbled upon this video.. but I have to ask: where are you from? Cos I can't believe how perfect you pronounced "krøller eller ej" 😂
Secondly, it hurts to hear the criticism from an outsider 🙉🙈 but if I'm being perfectly honest, I kinda agree with most of what you said!! Except I loved Only Teardrops 😉
And now I'll look into some more of your videos, from the other countries entries :)
Hi there. I live in the US but speak German so maybe I just randomly said it the right way :)I know I'm getting a lot of heat for not liking Emmelie's song but as said, it comes down to personal taste. And thanks for checking out the other videos, hope you'll enjoy them.
Imo 2011 was a great year! So many good songs but I respect you opinion 👍
Great job as always 😊
the jump from the 60s to the 70s, I woke up from my slumber 😂
7:57 You actually pronounced his name right!
And wow the songs name at 8:53 it was perfect!
Good job :)
I like the more calm and warm way you talked the viewer through the videos. Funny 'let's do this' as this was complete opposite of screamy. Besides I prefer comments on melody and lyrics as you do over commenting dresses and hotness of artists. That why I like escunited videos. Agree on teardrops btw. And yes she was pregnant at that time and vuggevise is Danish for lullaby. Thought you knew that.. 😋
Aww, thanks. And I didn't know for sure that she was pregnant. It just would have been awkward if she wasn't...but she had a certain glow and you just could tell....relieved that I was right.
I just keep watching this over and over and the 1980 is so good i really love it im danish
I love this video, and you are so sweet to our country! But a lot of the songs that is slow, has a really catchy lyric, just in danish. Like the things they say are just too good! And a lot of the songs, that you said aren´t catchy, was probably because their melody were slow, but all the lyrics were the best! Some of the songs has I been raised with, so I love them! haha:)
Jeg rev et blad ud af min dagbog means I ripped a page out of my Diary
Uh, jeg ville ønske jeg var dig means Uh, I wanted to wish I was you
(I'm not danish, I'm Swedish but our languages are very similar)
'Ooh, how I wish I were you' is probably a better translation ;-)
When Denmark won - Jörgen with the classic guitar - some claims he's the best - check this out: "Apache - Jörgen Ingmann 1961"
Dario Campetto I love him. He is so good in Han, hun, Dirch Og Dario wich is a really good old danish movie.
Tommy Seebachs son (Rasmus Seebach) actually is a huge star in Denmark now:-)
"under stjernerne på himlen" was writen to he's son, and is about that he will dream well, and he's son is now a musisian in denmark, where he has made a remix where it sounds wery sad.
i find it interesting that our songs in 1962 and 1963 both have “vise” in them (which is another word for song), the first one being “cradle-song” or in english “lullaby” and the second one “dancing-song”
Hi :) I'm a Danish female at 59. I do agree with you in some of your comments for the songs. I have been watching ESC in many years, and some years we didn't send the best song / music....... The voting system has been change very often. Today it's more or less the message in the text all of the countries do put as the 1. prior. ...... and it sometimes came out as a bad idea. But i liked the Danish song from 2018...... (i like the histories from the past) and it had a very important message to the World....... NO WARS. :) Peace from Denmark :)
"Dansevise" is stil the best one to me. From a time when there was class in music.
Hahah Matt you’re awesome. Got the diary (= dagbog) AND lullaby correct
not that long ago Birthe Kjær had her 50th anniversary as a singer so I guess she is doing something right and where Tommy Seebach left off Rasmus Seebach his son picked up but there are some good once :-)
there was a old joke about Kristen sigaar that she was precnet to break the rulls
And yes the 1989 song stil plays
From late 90s and up through the noughties we really sucked at many occasions. The best song from that era was actually the one finishing last in 2004.
The Songs form 2000, 2001 and 2005 was all in Danish original :)
