57 - old Hollywood vibes, would have been a good Disney song from that time. Very soothing
59 - it's cute, nothing too special for me but it is very catchy. And they are charismatic af
60 - just a weird entry for me. It almost feels like a parody.
61 - I love their harmonies! This is really catchy to me and it still gets stuck in my head from time to time. For me this is a classic.
62 - at least it looked like he was having fun, but the song is just so cheesy to me.
63 - standard, meh. So much so I can't say anything good or anything bad about it. It's just there.
64 - again, pretty forgotable in my opinion. Don't see how it got 2nd.
65 - I adore her voice! And her conviction in the song just makes this an empowering anthem in my eyes. Very underrated.
66 - the kilt lol I mean I get that it's traditional but it's hard to take him seriously with how morose he is and yet wearing a kilt. Again, just a meh song.
67 - Goddess! Such a deserving winner. If the song were sung by anyone else I don't think they could've pulled it off so well as she has. It does have a very childlike quality that wouldn't pass nowadays but somehow she makes it an enjoyable listen.
68 - a true classic. The lyrics sometimes irk me but it is so wholesome and catchy that I can't fault it.
69 - for me Lulu failed where Sandie made it work. A very childish song for me, that I don't think she was able to pull it off mainly because of her mannerisms and outfit but also her voice is very childlike. The song simply does not stand and all three other winners were much more deserving.
70 - she is absolutely gorgeous and her voice has such a soothing, mesmerizing quality to it. Unfortunately this song again sounds too child oriented for me to take it seriously.
71 - late 60s early 70s UK entries were all part of a children's show, I'm sure of it. This is slightly catchier than the previous two but still not very remarkable.
72 - this is a great folk- pop song. So catchy and sweet, could've been the winner in a year without Luxembourg in my opinion. It was very fresh for Eurovision at the time.
73 - I do prefer this one to his 68 entry. It resonates with me more, the lyrics are superb and the buildup to the chorus is epic. This was such a fantastic year with at least 4 entries in my opinion that could've won. This is one of them.
74 - whoever put her in that dress should shot. The first time I saw this performance I couldn't hear the song because the dress was screaming at me. That being said, I do like this song. Nothing too remarkbale but it's caught on to my ears rather quickly.
75 - should've been the winner that year instead of The Netherlands. Good lyrics, good harmonies.
76 - an amazing classic. This is true pop perfection. And this performance is one the best in ESC history. So enjoyable just watching them dance.
77 - this is just good. Vocally, lyrically, musically. And the performance was so much fun.
78 - I think this one gets bad rep. I actually like it and it was definitely a standout that year. I don't know why it ranked so low.
79 - it's okay. Not the best entry but definitely not the worst.
80 - I actually love this! It's sweet but not presumptuous and it's such a good sing along song.
81 - I thought Israel or Germany should've won that year to be quite honest. Is it fun? Yes. Is it catchy? Yes. Deserving winner? Not in my opinion.
82 - oh wow, this one. It almost reached the level of too manufactured. This is the bad kind of 80s pop. No substance whatsoever.
83 - so entertaining to watch! A very catchy, upbeat 80s hit. The good kind.
84 - this song screams 1984. And so does the performance. I do like this song, but nothing too remarkable.
85 - I forgot this one exists. It's not too bad but definitely not as memroable as other entries.
86 - again forgot about this one completely. So generic and unremarkable.
87 - Meh. I honestly don't understand this entry and what they were trying to accomplish with this.
88 - I actually think this is sublime. His emotions are very clear and visible and thay makes the entire performance memroable. A deserving second place but I still loved Switzerland a tad bit more.
89 - it's okay. This was a bad year in my opinion.
90 - cheesy and tiring. So meh to even meh.
91 - the lyrics lol I just can't. So phony and just absurd. Musically it's not as bad as 1990 but still. Very weak.
92 - it's catchy for sure but still a weak effort in my honest opinion.
93 - so much fun! Love this one, still one of the best UK entries ever.
94 - her voice is just grating to me. And thr song feels dragged out and boring. Not their worst though.
95 - why. Just, why. It's not good.
96 - such a bop. So 90s and nostalgic. I get why it didn't win but it was such a fun entry that year that it deserved higher than 8th.
97 - I'm not sure what to think of it. There are times I like it and times I don't. It definitely has the cheese factor down.
98 - I quite like this one. It feels foreign yet familiar to me. Very 90s.
99 - I like this one too. I think the vocals could have been better for sure but I don't think it's as bad as other think it is.
00 - why. Just, why. Don't play that song again, indeed.
01 - this song physically hurts me. It is so bad, just can't listen to it. Her voice hurts me
02 - their best entry in the 00s in my opinion. It's moving and not cheesy, doesn't feel dated as much as the others from those years do now, and her voice is so emotional and strong. Should have won in my opinion.
03 - ... I can't. Nothing can save this song. Even the studio was dreadful to listen to.
04 - this is sweet. One of my favorites from that year even though I know it's nothing special it still was able to rile me in for 3 minutes.
05 - honey, no. Just, no. Vocals are just so bad.
06 - okay. Unpopular opinion time. I actually find this catchy af and I think with a different performance (that didn't look so creepy), it could have been top 10. Not win, but top 10. This is in fact a guilty pleasure.
07 - I hate this song so much. Everything is so bad and I feel like this was the year the UK gave up, officially.
08 - underrated in my opinion. It's fun and his voice is great.
09 - overrated. Her vocals are grating to me and take away from the perfomance. The song feels like there's no basic melody to it and that annoys me to no end. I'm a musicals/disney fan and this is just a no for me.
10 - it's not their worst entry in my opinion. But it's averaged at best. Just unpleasant.
11 - underrated. It wasn't anything groundbreaking but there were the only ones on that stage that year that felt like bona fide superstars. Would have been a good winner. Their vocals are on point.
12 - I didn't like it at first but as I get older I finr this song very sweet, and uplifting. He is such a storyteller and its felt throughout the song beautifully. 25 is way too low.
13 - this on the other hand was just a trainwreck that should have been stopped.
14 - so this is one of the few times I heard the studio version before the live one and i must say I went into watching ESC with the full intent of seeing her win that year. However the performance fell utterly flat. It's amazing when you compare. I still listen to the studio version tho.
15 - what the actual fuck. Hate this. Don't want to talk about this. Onwards.
16 - I don't dislike this. But it's definitely not the worst song that year. It's cute.
17 - Love her voice, it was amazing on the night and the lights definitely helped make it a moment. However her mannerisms deracted from the song and you start noticing how the song wasn't as impressive as her vocals and the lyrics are quite cheesy. Still the best the UK has had in many years.
18 - I love SuRie as a person. And I love her voice and the acoustic version of this song.
But the studio and even more the live version (jury show), were abysmal. To be honest how she sang after the stage intruder wasn't perfect but her conviction in the song after and in the performance were amazing to watch. Think she deserved a better song.
    Phew. This was long. Sorry.

im not one of these Brits that moans when we do badly, alot of the songs we have sent in the last 20 years have deserved there really poor finish....however the one that almost made me stop watching Eurovision was Lucy finishing 15th.... that song was a top 5 by any standard and that one year i couldnt help for once to think that europe just would not give the UK what it deserved.... but then the very next year we sent a poor song again so i calmed down lol. I hope we can finish on the left side of the board this year and push on.

How were people reacting to the Eurovision Song Contest back then? Were people talking about it?
I mean, I've been watching it since 2016, my first ever contest and my favourite won the show and it's my most favourite entry of all time, so great first memory :3

Roy Moreno hi Roy..... people in the UK in the 1960 s certainly reacted to ESC The contest was very popular and continued to be so through the 70s dipping in the 80s...much like all over Europe then picking up again in the late 90s thanks to Gina Gs huge hit and Katrina and the Wave win.The 2000s were not good years for us......but thankfully the contest carried on and seemed to turn a corner in the public's mind and now it is popular again .......but I've Always loved it!!!! so amazing to listen to all the entries from my country.
in 1995 i was 6 and my sister bought me my very first cassette single and it was our 1995 entry so i have a soft spot for that. 96 was the first time i ever watched eurovision and that was because of gina g so i owe her a lot lol but i think i'm the only one who liked our 2003 entry. one day i hope to see us back on top. us eurovision fans here are so passionate about it but the bbc need to change their attitude towards it. another fantastic video. i personally believe we started doing badly when the language rules changed in 1999 and you could sing in english.

I still dream of the day where the presenters will say that they’ve reached the top 10 of the televote and the UK has yet to be called.

    • @TumbleTower

The trouble is, that won't happen if they continue announcing the televote results in the way they did in 2019, that is from the country with the lowest jury score to the country with the highest jury score. I dream of the day when the UK is already top 5 with the juries, and after a long wait, the host announces a top five televote score for the UK to add to its jury total.

The UK stops getting high scores from around the same time they dropped the language rule. Before then, the UK and Ireland had the unfair advantage of singing in a language that most juror's understood (which is why I dislike the Irish winners of 1994 do much. It was so nostalgic and entirely depending on the lyrics, not the melody or the beat. If it hadn't been in English it wouldn't have won).
However, it's not an excuse. The UK did great, and even won once, during the "allowing all languages" period of 1973-1976 too, competing against other songs in English. UK, you can do better. We believe in you. Come on, you can do this. Yes, it's harder with 43 and not 20 participants, and yes, being part of the top 5 gives you less exposure, and you no longer have the English advantage - but we still believe you can do this. Come on!

    • @doberman2yk
      @doberman2yk 5 лет назад +6

i disagree that you see it as an advantage. The Uk sang in its OWN language something every other country was doing. It cant be our fault that our language is the most understood 2nd language. I honestly believe we started doing badly right about the same time we stoped making an effort. We really have sent some terrible songs in the last 20 years or so.

Thank you, Matt. Because of your videos, I discovered that 1964, the lost ESC, was extraordinary. The competition was slightly before my time 😉.
If you have only a bit of sense for Chansons, you will find one pearl after another. Even the bottom 3 Portugal, Yugoslavia and Switzerland are amazing.
At times you think you are in Las Vegas when you ignore the languages.
The winner Italy/Gigliola Cinquetti [dʒiʎˈʎɔːla tʃiŋˈkwetti]* is without discussion an outstanding winner.
Place 6 Austria/Udo Jürgens/Warum nur, warum? was covered by place 2 UK/Matt Munro. He sold 1,5 million copies of the cover "Walk Away" and was in the US and UK charts. Udo himself was number one in the french charts and we all know how popular the German language was in France, 19 years after World War 2, although it helped that he was an Austrian. Extraordinary.
The only song I dont like at all is - sorry - the German one . The song is strange and badly sung. It wouldn't even help if I couldn't understand the lyrics and I tried hard to ignore them.😁
If I'm not mistaken, Austria got most of their points over the years, not from Germany or Switzerland ( it is truly no voting block) but from the UK. Fascinating.
    * little help for you for future pronunciations.😉

Thank you for producing this video of UK entries. What did you think of "Bigger Than Us" in 2019? I'm not surprised it finished last in the ESC 2019 final, I thought "Bigger Than Us" was one of the weakest songs in the ESC Final 2019. I thought the two verses were rather dull. Although the first two choruses sounded livelier, this only really got going when the backing singers entered the stage around two thirds of the way through. To make matters worse, it was sandwiched between the much livelier entries of Norway and Iceland, making it what I call the "bungalow between two skyscrapers".

For the UK to ever do well again they’d need to completely remove the jury vote. Only then will we ever stand any chance.

Not true at all. We actually stand more chance of getting jury votes than televote! Just look at 2009, 2013 and 2017!

    • @JeSuisRene
      @JeSuisRene 5 лет назад +1

From the past few years, it's evident that the singers are more than capable, it is just that the song chosen is dire; often, it does not show what the singers are truly capable of. It is clear that during Eurovision: You Decide, the public vote for the better singer. I think they should do what they did in the 90s (from '92-'94, they achieved 2x second place and 1x tenth place - in 1994, but admittedly it was a strong year): I think the BBC should internally select a capable singer (having continental recognition may help), and if using the public, having the singer sing all the songs for the public to decide on as that way we know that the public are going to vote on a better song, as opposed to the vocals. Remember, it is a song contest rather than a singing contest. Hope that helps! =D

hey Matt!! Thanks again for your good presentation and comments!! Did you know that Bobby Mc Vay from Sweet dreams (1983) joined the former members of Bucks Fizz (1981), Mike Nolan, Cheryl Baker and Jay Aston, who are currently performing under the name The Fizz, due to legal issues with their former bandmate Bobby G, who got the legal namerights as Bucks Fizz and is performing with his own line up, in 2015 up to the begin of 2018! The Fizz were a four piece again and they released an awsome cd called The F-Z of pop. Produced by Mike Stock. Bobby Mc V left the band unfortunately, so they decided to continue as a trio!!

In the 60's and 70's the UK send many songs which could easily win in an other year tho. They're unlucky to (almost) every year bump into a great, great winner (mostly Ireland but also France for example). Except in 1959, 1961, 1962 (or The Netherlands)1977 and 1993, they should have won and not Ireland

The message in SuRie's song is too subtle for the non-Uk audience. I keep saying this, everyone slates it because they don't understand what the UK is going through right now. SuRie totally gets it and her attitude towards life is exactly what the UK needs. That is all

These videos are like lessons in ESC history :). There are definitely some nice finds, but UK to me, is one of the more underwhelming countries in Eurovision. Have been rooting for UK during the past years, as i consistently feel sorry for the big 5 for often ending up on the right side of scoreboard, yet something has to change in how songs for UK are chosen, I suppose. From the other end of Europe, it seems like ESC is rather not a huge priority for the UK. If so, then undeservedly, cause during the youtube age ESC is creating more ripple than ever and all the artists get lots of love and publicity. Actually, in 2017 UK was among my surprise favorites due to the impressive staging and the revamp, Joe and Jake were indeed adorable, I do not find the song lackluster or uninspiring, but 2016 was such a great year (all past years have been, actually) that it just got lost between other really great songs :(. So - fingers crossed that the UK will come up with something great in the future! I am one of the few, it seems, who has never been a fan on the 1997 winning song, my favorite from the 1990s is Lonely Symphony (1994). And I remember hearing Gina G on the radio pre contest - it was such a pop hit - that was a huge revelation that a kind of a "niche contest" entry could even do that :D. Thought back then that it would be a clear winner :). 2006 is a sort of a guilty pleasure for me :D, it's so over the top that I enjoy it :).

Europe has been punishing the UK for all those undeserved 2nd places and all those votings which were successful out of favouritism. It is obvious that the big 5 have not yet conceived that their privilege (to present themselves automatically on the Grand Final) is at the same time their own conviction. People just seem not to be able to relate effectively to songs that march in like troops in Lebanon the very final moment of the competition.
