My favorite winner of all time is Fairytale (I remember telling my husband during pre-selection that if Norway sends this, they are gonna win. It was obvious to me from the first time I heard it. Never had that feeling before or after)
Others I really love are Fly on the wings of love, My number one, Hardrock Halleluja, Euphoria, Satellite (although I was rooting for Turkey that year) and probably my second favorite after Fairytale, Molitva. It was magic and so beautiful. I also love ABBAs win, although its not even close to their best song.
And like you, I will never understand why Only teardrops won. Norways song that year however should have.

The Voice and Secret Garden's Nocturne are probably two of my favourites to ever have come out of this show, past or present, period. I'm a sucker for Irish music, and while the latter was Norway's entry and heavily based in Norwegian Folk, it still has strong Irish foundations too cause of the violinist, Fionnuala Sherry. Rolf Loveland and her often combined the two into a beautiful mix. Some songs of theirs were in Norwegian, some English, and some even in Irish, like Sigma and Sona. Secret Garden really is an interesting yet beautiful combinations of Irish and Norwegian Folk music, and probably had some of the best long term success out of the other winners of Eurovision, on their own. The Voice was probably made more popular by Celtic Woman, as that's where I myself actually first heard the song. But Secret Garden managed to make it on their own and are still going strong after more than 20 years, and through several terrible injuries. As Fionnuala herself has said, she is the clumsiest Violinist out there. Not long after Eurovision, she broke her shoulder, managed to beautifully recover, then in 2015, she slipped on ice while walking her dog and broke I believe five wrist bones and her elbow and had to essentially relearn how to play her Violin, but again, she managed to do it in record time, managing to convince the doctors to remove the metal plates in her wrist (which was on her bow arm mind you) so she could play for the 20th anniversary concert. And, despite being a bit rough at times, it's a wonder she could play at all. The Reel is one of the most impressive parts of that show. She played with the plates still in her supporting arm elbow, too. They were removed I believe it was like a month later or something. They're just an amazing group, and she herself is quite the fighter, managing to completely recover from two potentially (and should have been) career ending injuries. So even now, Secret Garden is still flying high! They are behind some really popular songs, too... Heartstrings, which was recorded with added lyrics for Barbara Streisand's wedding, Celebration written for the King and Queen of Norway (I believe for the Queen's birthday, or for an anniversary, I forget which), and also You Raise Me Up. Yes, You Raise Me up so I can stand on mountains... That one. That's a Secret Garden song, written by Rolf Lovland originally!
Anyway, I've gone on long enough now. Thanks for the list and reaction!

Monaco's song 1971 is an interesting masterpiece.
The structure of the song is genius. If you listening closely the background male singers repeat the melody of the chorus during the verses and it somehow fits together. Very smart. So subconsciously you here the chorus almost the whole three minutes. Has anybody done that before or after?

I didn't know it then that Helena Paparizou was Swedish competing for Greece, of course of her Greece genes on her parents side. When you look at the competition the last 5-10 years Sweden is involved a lot indirectly in other nations performances. Everyone seems to use Swedish song writers, choreographers, artists with connections to verious countries etc. Even the competition get a lot of help from Swedish TV, backstage personalities, technicians etc.
If I remember correctly I think like 6-7 songs in the last Eurovision final alone was either written and/or choreographed by Swedes. And the Swedish channel SVT helped with the broadcast because they apparently did such a great job at home hosting the competition previously.

      Helena’s parents are both Greeks
She was born in Sweden and she stayed there till 18
Then she left Sweden for good
      And she came to Greece
She became a singer and after 2 years she went to Esc (2001)
And then she went solo and after some years she went to Esc again (2005) with a song by a Greek composer and choreography by a Greek choreographer
I don’t see how Sweden has anything to do with this entry

1956: The song was great, I wish it should've brought more power if she was performing the song in 2018 with powerful orchestral sound to it (Not really in ESC but some kind of a tribute) Lys Assia sadly died of old age. She will be remembered ):
1957: Yes it wasn't so great but she did a great job that year and won.
1958: It's a bit generic but it's still great in my opinion.
1959: Teddy Scholten's voice sounds like she was speaking to an audience, But it's still great in my opinion.
1960: It is great, but the Jacqueline Boyer's voice seems to be like an 5-year old girl's voice in my opinion.
1961: It's not that great but still it made Luxembourg a big name in Eurovision.
      1962: It was repetitive.
1963: I'm glad that Switzerland did not won because this song was one of the first songs that made a nordic country win. It's great.
1964: This is truly a masterpiece, The song was sung in a postcard where Bebi Dol (Baby Doll) sang it (ESC 1991) This was great.
1965: This song was great but her voice annoys me a lot. Isabelle (France) Gall will be remembered ):
1966: This song was great but the stuttering "Merci" voice annoys me a lot. Udo will be missed ):
      Work in Progress

As I saw Vicky Leandros and Après toi I remembered that she took part in the ESC 1967 in Vienna with a song called L’amour est bleu. In 1968 the United States got obsessed with an instrumental version of this song. Does anybody know what was the trigger for that obsession? How started this success in the US?

    • @ESCunited
      @ESCunited  6 лет назад

This is what I found online: In late 1967, Paul Mauriat conducted/recorded an orchestral "easy listening" version that was a number-one hit in the USA for five weeks in February and March 1968, becoming the only performance by a French artist ever to top the Billboard Hot 100 until 2017

    • @lindonesc
      @lindonesc 6 лет назад

I did a little research too and I found a clip of Paul Mauriat and his orchestra. Many people believe he was the composer, but he was not. Nowhere at the time is a reference to be found that it originated from the ESC. So not only Volare had a big impact on the US without noticing the roots of the hits. There is a long standing pattern of the US to deliberately ignore the ESC.

ABBA performing the amazing "Waterloo" gives to Sweden the first victory, and change it all
after these , ABBA was famous and begin your career as the biggest and greatest group after BEATLES
and your song "Waterloo" was voted as the greatest song in all Eurovisión history in 2005

La, la, la is a really good song. I think you never listen to the complete song. The original song was made by Joan Manuel Serrat and it was a protest song against dictatorship. It’s a masterpiece. I hope you can listen to the original and can read the translation of the lyrics.

And I have to comment on the year 2001. Greece should have won. Die for you (performed by Helena Paparizou) was by far the best song that year and is by most considered the real winner. It's still to this date in my top 5 of all Eurovision songs. It was great she came back and won, but Die for you was better than My number one in my opinion. Great video :)

what i like about the "old" eurovision is that it was more about the song, and way less about the lightshow/dance/presentation. the old version felt way more like "song"contest. and it was way diverse, because everyone had to perform in their own language.. today its most english

Personally, I do not like most of the winning songs. I usually find the other songs a lot better. With a few exceptions Lordi and the man from Portugal last year I'm sorry but I'm really bad when it comes to names.
Volare - Domenico Modugno - Nel blu dipinto di blu 1958
Il Volo - Grande Amore (ITALY) Eurovision 2015
Eugent Bushpepa - Mall - Albania Eurovision 2018
Meta e Fabrizio Moro Non mi avete fatto niente 2018

Thanks. I do know a little bit about Irish culture, I just don't like the song. The pitch of her voice sits in an uncomfortable spot for me. There is a bunch of celtic inspired music, this just seems a bit lackluster. But as you pointed out, tastes differ.
