"Spongebob, if I were you I'd always feared. But I'll tell you what. If you can pull off, I'll give you a golden spatula." "How about a driver's license instead?" "Nice try."
+Masked Man Claus This doubles as memories and absolute depression for me. I remember having so much fun on the downtown level, but when the time came to give up on the game, I was devastated. I wished it would never end. so far, no video game has even come close to filling the gap in my heart sbfbb did.
The people behind this game's soundtrack were complete geniuses! I've never heard this much low-swank, necessary jazz like any before, especially on a platforming video game.
There’s something really soothing about the acoustic guitar/ukulele/whatever it is in this song. At 1:10 in particular, I almost picture a parent singing something encouraging to their child when the child is feeling depressed or down on their luck. You can almost hear how it’d form just by listening to it. That’s really fitting, honestly. In the context of the game, SpongeBob is still mentally a child and feels upset that this whole robot crisis is his fault. He’s gotten a taste of how bad these robots can be in Jellyfish Fields, but in Downtown, he’s introduced to the G-Love and Chuck, which are more dangerous than the Fodders and Ham-Mers he faced before. But the music is there. It’s like it’s trying to say that SpongeBob is innocent in this crisis, and is saying that, no matter how strong future models get, he can always take them on. Not to mention, this game was marketed towards kids. To them, assuming they were in the 6-8 age range at the time, they most likely had a kid life of watching shows on Nick Jr., like Blue’s Clues, for example. To anyone who was a fan of Blue’s Clues at the time, a riff like the one at 2:13 would sound really familiar. Now would the idea of facing an army of robots bent on destroying what you watch now be good? No. No, it wouldn’t. And it’d work even less with younger kids. The music seems like it’s trying to say “Listen. I know this looks dire. These robots have made a mess of Downtown, and the they’re more dangerous here than in Jellyfish Fields. But don’t worry. Everything will be okay. SpongeBob will drive these robots away… and you’re gonna help him do it.” We all know how Nick Jr. shows talk to the audience to get kids to participate in what the characters are doing. Blue’s Clues is indeed one of those shows, and Steve Burns had a real talent for making it seem so natural to the point where you’d sometimes forget there’s a screen between you. This music has a near identical effect, except this time, your actions actually do have an effect on the world in the screen. Not to mention, this plays in the SpongeBall Arena. You’ve just come out of a brutal final boss. The story is over. You’re free to leave the game now. But after the ending, you’re brought to this little arena filled with pinball-style obstacles. And the music here has a different effect in my eyes. If it had lyrics, while the Downtown variant would’ve been encouraging the player to keep going and face the robots as talked about above, this version would probably have a different message. 1:10 “You see? You’ve persevered right through to the end, been on an adventure with your undersea friend. We really are proud of what you’ve done, and we’re sure you’ve had plenty of fun. Now it’s time for goodbye, but keep your spirits high. Just let yourself roll all around, nothing can hurt you now, it’s fun abound. Let the happiness flow, and just let go. And you’ve earned it too, think of all you’ve been through the past few days: SpongeBob and you.” It’s celebratory. You’ve saved Bikini Bottom. Your reward is finally the peacefulness that Bikini Bottom is known for. Thank you, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom, for making the past twenty years unforgettable to children around the world.
For some reason, I never liked Downtown Bikini Bottom all that much, so I never spent a lot of time there. However, I DID spend a lot of time in the Spongeball Arena, where this also plays. So to me, this is the music that I associate with finally winning the game and reaching the end of the adventure.
