- A Brief explanation of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner Head-Up Display.
A HUD is a transparent display that presents data without requiring pilots to look away from their usual viewpoints, on the B787 it has 3 positions: stowed, operating and breakaway.
In a sudden and sustained deceleration the screen rotates forward and locks in the breakaway position, this prevents the pilot's head from impacting the HUD.
There are no lateral or vertical adjustments for the HUD, forcing the pilot to always be seated in the correct position. At first, that could be uncomfortable but pilots get used to.
At higher altitudes the HUD horizon line may appear slightly above the actual horizon due to curvature of the earth.
The primary fuction of the HUD in commercial airlines is for conducting low visibility takeoff and landings, flying with HUD makes landings more precise and easier.

Very cool that HUDs which were once exclusively a military item are now mainstream in civilian aviation.
Automotive and aviation heads up displays have been around since the 1940s...nothing new.
I love this kind of stuff😍 Thanks a lot for sharing and explaining👏🏻
Otaku ? Aviation ?
Im in.
Do company SOPs ever require the pilot to use or not use the HUD in certain situations? Or is it always pilot's choice?
depends on company SOP
The video contains the perfet mix of views from cutting edge technology and aesthetic vintage
This channel needs more subs..I love detailings
I wanted to see what precision approach looks like on this
I’m new to the 787 and so far I am not digging the HUD. Company policy is to use it for takeoff and landing regardless of weather conditions. At this point I find it to be a distraction. I hope I get used to it…
It seems like a big prescribed lenses with antireflective (green reflexes layer)
I'm guessing you get full integration of the ILS markers (once the ILS is captured and approach mode engaged)?
The display of the ILS is visually similar to what you have on the MFD below. Simply following the Flight Director is all the pilot needs to do.
You can see it here ruclips.net/video/XmOtFccXoTQ/видео.html
does the glass of the hud get dirty from constantly touching it with your hands every time you put it up or down?
at the end of the video I heard some Spanish over the radio, do you speak that language?
yes it can, so it is important to grab it form the edges, yes my brother and i make this videos, we are from Mexico.
@@RobT_Cockpit_videos ah qué interesante, yo hace años volé (como pasajero) en uno de latam
How have you recorded this? What mount and camera
no mount, the camera is a Sony RX100 VII
If you look carefully you can see pilots making a living, fascinating
Thank you so very much. New subscriber here
I swear I have chosen in which plane I will fly when I become a pilot
2:31 Flat earthers be like: “Lies.”
I've never seen something like this in person and it always fascinates me. Does the image really "stay in place" even if the pilot tilts or rotate their head?
It's a bit like looking down a tube. If you can see the display it remains fixed, but if you are too far to one side then you can't see the display.
The image is concentrated from above in the center. If you get away the center the lines blur, just like a telescope or magnifying glass.
Fascinante. Muchas gracias por compartirlo.

That's flipping cool.
Very cool! Thanks for posting .
Well done! Thanks for sharing!

映像で正面から見るの初めてだ
That's really cool! Thank you for the video
nice
Great job!
Are you Chinese pilot?
Mexican pilot, not Chinese
F-18 jajaja
武器はないのか、武器は!
飛行機は武器です...
How does that thing work?
triskaidekaphobia 13 there is a proyector above pilots head. The HUD is merely a piece of glass.
@@Capt.Ho.Lee.Fuk. ah thanks for the info...
@@caelari1722 The projector is rather a clever one, it uses collimated light. That's why the HUD is usually just one color. A multi-color HUD would need multiple projectors, all position very carefully. I'm sure it will come one day!
