as someone who is a jess fan, i would really recommend the episodes season 2 episode 13 a “tisket a tasket”, season 2 episode 19 “teach me tonight”, or season 6 episode 8 “let me hear your balalaikas ring out” - the first two really show the softer moments between rory and jess and why rory really fell for him in the first place, and the last one really shows his growth from his teenage self. he was a troubled teen with an absentee mother and a dad who bailed (similarly to rory) who felt out of place in the world and a lot of times succumbed to the assumptions people had of him but he really matured and is probably the single character who grew the most in the entire series.

season 6 episode 18 “the real paul anka” also is a good one to show jess’ growth- it’s also his last appearance on the show
So they actually do bring Pennilyn Lott onto the show several episodes before this one. Season 4, Episode 9 “Ted Koppel’s Big Night out”. Lots of drama between Emily and Richard in that episode.
This episode is SO IMPORTANT.

There is actually an episode where Rory judges a guy for always carrying a water bottle. I think she told Lorelai that was either weird or creepy lol
Cousin Marion is played by Marion Ross, who had played Richard's mother in previous episodes. She also played the mother in "Happy Days."
This episode is full of my favorite Emily moments, but also really highlights how self-centered Rory is. "I feel like I should be crying, I'm horrible, etc..." She really had everyone kissing the ground she walked on when Lorelai got back in touch with her parents and began pursuing the Ivy League life and was never told to worry about others, so I can't blame her entirely. When her mom tells her she can work herself up into a respectable panic attack, it made me realize Rory does that whenever she does something to hurt other people in her life.
However, you can meet Pennilyn Lott in the episode 'Ted Koppel's Big Night Out' in season 4, episode 9, it has so many face palming, cringe moments.
Well at least she admitted she should be sad and crying so she really isn’t self centered there
this is my comfort show and it truly brings me joy to be able to see it through a fresh pair of eyes

If you're interested in watching the episode where Richard's ex panel and light shows up then try the episode from season four where they go to the Yale Harvard game, I cannot remember the name of it. As for Lorelai the first or Gran, she shows up in both season two and season three before this moment I think she's in about three or four episodes, I can't remember the names of them But I thought you might've reacted to one of them before where Emily walks in and sees her kissing a man and tells Richard about it, also she's really nasty to Emily all of the time because she doesn't like her which just follows through to what she said about Emily and that horrible letter. Also fun fact the actress who plays Richard's cousin Maryland is also the same actress who plays Gran which is both very matter and very weird.
