We have had a very cold spring here in Portland, the roses are finally starting to bloom now. Normally, by the time you got here, they would be in bloom. Please do come back. I'd be happy to show you all around. I'm a rarity here, born and raised in Portland, and a history buff as well.

I was working in downtown Portland the day that you visited. I can tell you that the lack of people feels surreal to the people who work there too. It sort of feels like a zombie apocalypse could happen at any moment. Oregon and Portland in particular had a very strong response to the pandemic and most companies didn't start allowing employees to return to work until the start of 2022. Return to office has been impeded by new variants. Employees are finding that they don't want to spend 20 - 50 mins commuting each way and paying $15 - 20 for parking per day. Going into the office to find that the office is nearly empty doesn't feel like a great use of time and money, particularly when most people have been able to work at home just fine for the past two years. Portland will eventually feel busier but it feels like it is going to take a number of years to feel less abandoned.

Glad you made it to our city between rain storms. Everything is late blooming this year, but the roses usually start in June and some last until November. You were walking under rhododendrons and the white tree you liked was a dogwood. The tall trees were Douglas firs named after your countryman, David Douglas, a botanist who travelled this area in the 19th century studying plants and collecting specimens for the royal family. When I was in Scotland a few years ago my niece and her husband living in Aberdeen took me to Balmoral Castle. The entryway is lined with trees from around the world including a western cedar and some others I saw that came from here in Oregon. (Dont' recall seeing a Douglas Fir, however.) Also, a guide at Edinburgh Castle, who is a longbowman reenactor, told us that the best yew to make longbows now comes from Oregon.

As a local, I quietly cringed when I saw they went to Voodoo donuts. I think every food blogger that comes to town feels obligated to gush over their over-hyped donuts (Blue Star Donuts is much better). I think it's the same feeling local New Yorkers have, who roll their eyes whenever someone rants about Katz's Delicatessen.

So glad you plan to return some day! Sorry the roses were not in bloom -- the unusually cold wet Spring is to blame - we're about 3 weeks behind, it seems. But you did manage to find some beauties -- the big white bushes are Rhododendrons (aka "Rhodies") -- which are native to the Northwest, (some varieties), and so grow especially well here. You captured a smaller pink Rhodie, as well, surrounded by the brilliant red-orange azaleas, (& more big white Rhodies in the background), in the scene right after the Pittock Mansion -- more plants that love our Portland weather. Not roses, but perhaps even better as representatives of the Northwest, to welcome you to our city. Hopefully, you can return again in June sometime, for the roses' show! Enjoy the rest of your trip!

I found tons of rhodies in Edinburgh as well. They don't seem to grow as big there, but especially in the gardens around they are plentiful. Seems they might prune them to stay bush size/shape.

Everything is behind as far as flowers and trees. Up here we just had the tree leaves come out 2 weeks ago. Weird May! Today is hot. I'd love to go to Oregon and Washington and Northern California. I ran across your RUclips channel as I was looking for information on the Highland games in Scotland. I watched a video from from April 2019. I checked out your other videos and discovered that you have recently been here on the West Coast, including a visit to Portland. I live just outside of Portland in Gresham, where by the way, the Portland Highland games are held. I hope you had a terrific visit despite the unusually cool weather this spring. Beats the 116° weather we had last summer.
I visited Scotland for two weeks in the fall of 2017 with my sister. We had a blast visiting many castles, Culloden Battlefield, the Kelpies, the Highlands, various little side trips and some mishaps that still have us laughing. Everyone was was exceptionally kind to us. We drove, yes we drove ourselves, on the left side of the road, and we managed quite well. Scotland is a beautiful country with a rich history. I especially loved the lochs and the Highlands.
I have discovered that my ancestry comes mostly from Britain, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. When COVID hit I found that Duolingo offered Scottish Gaelic as a language to learn. It's apparently not a widely used language but I have enjoyed trying to learn it. The most interesting part has been some of the history I have learned and some places I wish that we had visited when we were there. For now I search the internet for information but I hope to visit your beautiful country again some day.
I look forward to watching more of your videos.

A lot of US cities have emptied out as a result of the pandemic. So many jobs that used to be centralized in downtowns, now are remote work. People moved out of expensive cities to more affordable cities, suburbs and rural areas where they could buy larger homes to accomodate spouses working from home and kids schooling at home. Even as the pandemic is waning, many businesses have maintained a virtual workforce because it’s cheaper than having to pay for office space. Then, of course, there was the impact of all the riots and police reform measures in a lot of liberal cities, and that just encouraged crime and open drug use and a lot of homelessness, making cities less attractive to return to.

I think someone is commenting about this below, but it's been an unusually cold, and wet Spring here in Seattle. I love cloudy days, so I'm happy about it. Roses are just beginning to bloom here on Bainbridge Island, which is a 35 minute ferry ride from Seattle, and it's June 5th. I ended up not getting to see you at the meet up here in Seattle, because I took my son to see "The Northman" in an old theater nearby, and I'm glad I didn't make it, because I started feeling sick that night, and tested positive for Covid the next day. So I'm sure you, and anyone that did get to meet you in Seattle are very glad I didn't make it that night, if any of you read this. I really wanted to go though, and still seriously considered it. Yes, downtown business offices in high rise buildings are essentially deserted due to COVID. A number of law offices and insurance agencies with 500+ people are still in home-based virtual operation, as are many other businesses that serve those workers daily. I don't expect a significant change until COVID finally fades. But there will still be many outdoor festivals on the waterfront, generally one every week or two until mid-September.

You gave fair observations. There are better donut shops, some even cook to your order and deliver hot. You were correct that or roses bloom a bit later, usually by the first week of June, which is also the Rose Festival with a big parade that used to have 400,000 parade watchers in the streets before COVID and will again someday.
But my wife suggested you really need to see us on summer, which starts on July 5 and ends in late September when the rains start again. Summer is gorgeous and wonderful with everyone outside in the sunshine. Skiing is still in season on the mountain, hiking trails are full of people visiting the blooms, the Columbia River Gorge has a crowd of visitors to it's magnificent waterfalls, the coastline has good weather, and every small town has a parade and/or a rodeo nearby. You are out and about on a random Wednesday. Most cities that are not NYC or LA or of similar size are "abandoned" in any district that is more entertainment based from Monday through usually at least Thursday until at least 6pm because everyone is at work. The US is mostly a weekend culture with many places even being closed Monday through Wednesday because it would just be a waste of labor costs.
Exceptions to this that ive found in my travels are cities that are mostly college towns where half or more of the inhabitants are 18-22 year old college students. Those places are usually packed at all times, but during their summer break the town slows way down. Also tourist towns that are dead in the winter but are packed all summer like beach towns or places in the mountains that attract more outdoorsy people or the inverse at places that have skiing/snowboarding where winter is very popular and dead in the summer.

This is simply not true. I’ve since been to 6 other US cities since Portland, of varying sizes, and none of them were like that. My own home town is smaller than Portland and isn’t like that either. And it wasn’t just about the lack of people - most places weren’t even open. Again Portland is the only place I’ve visited in the US where this is the case

@@josephbridges7470 I’m not sure you understand what I mean - there is one thing being quiet due to being mid day when folks are working, it’s entirely another to be totally abandoned and devoid of people who look like they could be working, cafes with people in them - any signs of normal activity. I’m any city centre where people work, people go for coffee throughout the day at least, while there are tourists around. Portland downtown was was entirely abandoned. And btw, I was also in Seattle - it was not as I described Portland to be.

@@shaunvlog Again, I haven’t been to Portland, but maybe you were walking around in a slow district of the city then. Most mid size cities like Portland only have a few streets or blocks that are populated by people doing stuff. Charlotte, NC which has a metro population of 2.5 million is well known as a very empty downtown, but has plenty of areas just half mile or so away which are hopping with activity. I read some other comments on this video of people commenting about how the area you were visiting is usually not busy, but just few streets down things are more normal. I only have the news to go on, but it seems Portland has had a very bad pandemic downturn with many people who would probably choose to live downtown fleeing for the safety of the suburbs.

You could check out the Shanghai tunnels in Portland. In Salem there is also the Oregon state mental health museum now that is a real trip. Oh and there is a carousel at the main water front park here in Salem as well. If you want a good afternoon in pioneer type of museums than head to Oregon City. There you have the Barlow and McLoughlin houses and others scattered throughout down town oh and then there is the elevator or to you the lift. Can't miss it, the only really tall pink building in downtown Oregon City. You have to check out Astoria, seaside, Newport, Lincoln City, Cannon Beach. Now the actual beach sences in the Goonies were fimed on Cannon Beach, and my favorite Tillamook they have a wonderful cheese and ice cream factory there. Newport has the Coastal Aquarium. Oh and all the little coastal cities between Lincoln City and Newport are nice. In the town of Taft we have Moe's fish house in Depo Bay we have a business that will take you out whale watching in nice boats. Lincoln City has the casino and some great fish places. Some great bookshops and even a Harry Potter themed store. My favorite place to get sweets and handmade chocolate in Lincoln City is called the Green Frog. In Depo Bay you can even blow your own sea glass balls in a shop there, my youngest daughter has done that, said it was cool. In Ashland we have the Shakespeareian festival. Than if you go to Easter Oregon we have some wonderful County. You can look for fossils in the town of Fossil. There are some great museums about the Oregon trail nearest the town of Baker. Oh and most see is our beautiful Mt Hood. You can even look for fire opals in Eastern Oregon

If you head down to Salem you can tour the state capital building and climb up to the base of the Golden logger at the top. We have also got south of Salem the Enchanted Forest. If you watch Peter Holnes and his wife's RUclips channel the go there often to film. Oh and the travel channels show Ghost Adventures has filmed there too. There is also the Pittick Mansion, the outside of it was featured in the Madonna movie Body of evidence. You would have passed both Powells and the Pittock going to Washington Park if you went that way on Burnside as in heading away from the river up Burnside towards the big Volvo sign. Check out ant of the many Mac Menimins restaurants There are many and some are really cool. They even have their own passports were you can become a cosmic traveler it's cool you just go to each of their places and check them out look it up. @@shaunvlog The reason downtown and most places are relatively empty has little if anything to do with the BLM riots. 🤦🏻‍♂️ The reason is we’re in a transition coming out of the pandemic. Unlike London or New York City - where ppl live in the city proper - Portland, like most big US cities, has some ppl living downtown but many, many more who live out in residential neighborhoods or further out in the suburbs. And most of those ppl who used to pour into downtown on a daily basis to go to work are instead still working from home, if not everyday then at least a few days a week. A lot of downtown/business district shops and restaurants that used to thrive on huge crowds are now struggling simply due to lower overall foot traffic.
