  • Backside Top Turn. the top turn itself is rather intuitive and somewhat of a reflex. What is much more difficult is getting to that turn, Between the bottom turn and the top turn, there is the wind up which requires you to open up your shoulders and reach back with your front arm.
    This video will go over one method and also a tip that I discovered recently that has been helping me. Hopefully it will help you too.
    Surfboards used in video:

    Firewire Seaside 0:03 0:22
    Firewire Twice Baked 0:10 0:13

    Love your approach and explanation. Thank you for putting it all together! After watching your sick turns on Twice Baked, I'm kind of sold to get one. I also saw someone in Rockaway destroying it in sloppy mush-burgers and the board just slices through with a good speed.

    I think keeping trailing arm low coming into the bottom turn is best, this gives you the opportunity to throw it up high as you come out of the turn up the face and generate momentum up the wave. Surfing is all about compressing the body in a position to generate momentum upwards, uncoiling to climb the wave then controlling it coming down. With the back arm high going into the turn the spring is already uncoiled if that makes sense. Watch Medina accelerate out of backhand turns then watch your last few turns in this video where your trailing arm stays high, you were a little behind sections you could have made with a little more upward momentum on the bottom turn. Excellent video.

      yeah, I would have to agree and in my opinion, i think it looks way better too, low arms that is. Conner O'Leary's backhand is so sick and as much as I try and mimic it, my years of bad form and muscle memory is hard to break. something else I learned too which is another major but has been really hard to break the habit of is leaning. I lean into my turns which I shouldn't. the compressions to extension should create the G's that you fight to generate more speed. but I often lean, which makes me lean before the extension which then makes me fight the falling feeling and I end up wasting the extension on balance vs speed generation. does that makes sense. Yeah, I wish I had not developed such bad habits over the years. I think the Kelly Slater 90's boards f'd it all up for me. haha too small, used up all my learning time fighting against a small ass 17.5" wide board.

    yeah the monster carver...i remember after watching Lords of Dogtown i had a blast doing layback carves....you can even do a big roundhouse cuttie while grabing the rail of the monster carver making it turn tighter or faster. I remeber dane reynolds was the first guy i saw grabbing the rail of his surfboard to help him turn fast and tight.

    Your back arm is where you load your inertia to swing around and generate a lot of momentum to produce a nice and powerful spray. Not sure if this is just me but it would be good to hear some comments about it

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      I definitely agree when going front side. I swing my arm back to cock the inertia but I don't notice it much on my backhand. I do pull it around in front of my body but more for balance. all my best backside turns, I feel are the ones where my front arm is way behind me and swings over.
      but I'll try and pay more attention to my back arm to see if I notice anything.

    • @alejandrodemosteyrinmunoz5755
      @alejandrodemosteyrinmunoz5755 3 года назад

      @@ThomyeSurfs you are definitely right. Yes, it works better on front side. Maybe it can help generating inertia during the bottom turn to project you into the lip of the wave. I am not sure, it would be great if you test it and tell us how it feels. Again, thanks for sharing your videos. It is cool to see your progression and use it for our own learning curve.

      Thanks. I appreciate that. I have been surfing 30+ years. Although In my 20's, I have missed years. Girlfriends and misguided priorities. In my 30's, I have missed months at a time. In my 40's, I only miss bad days. in my 50's now, I don't miss at all. I surf no matter what. If I drive to the beach, I am in. I figure I only have a bout 10 good years of progressive surfing left and 20 years of surfing at all. After that, my bad back and joints will catch up to me. :(
      As far as where I surf, mostly bolsa chica down by Huntington beach. But I do like surfing south, Trestles. It is just harder to convince my brother to go there.

    Hello, hows things? Mind if I ask what are your thoughts on tail pads? I'm getting new board and wondering whether to put one straight on or surf it for a bit without one and see how it goes? Can they be a hindrance? Can they get in the way of a pop up? I've Been surfing an 8ft board for a while but without a pad, new board will be 6'6" Thanks. Great channel keep the vids coming :)

  • @youdigsurf
    @youdigsurf 3 года назад +1

    Interesting but music is a little bit too loud, when you speak you should reduce it very low. Do you have your foot at the tail everytime ? Because on some board i can stick my foot close the the part of the board but on some it’s definitively stopping the board and i have to put my foot almost at the front of the pad, so i have ton consciently move my foot back before engaging a turn.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +2

      I think that is normal. I do that going frontside but not so much backside. Frontside, I will shift my back foot quite a bit, my boards are short so I go from front of the traction pad when driving the board to the back when turning. On backside, I usually have it glued to the kick but it takes me a second to get it back there, I tend to pop up with my foot in the middle and then slide it back on the drop or as i pump a bit.
      on a more performance design, it isn't as critical unless the turn is critical but that is because the tail is already so narrow. it is definitely required on my Twice baked because the tail is soo wide. I might have to pull the traction off and move it further back to be honest. It is night and day how that board rides when my foot is on the kick vs inches in front of it.
      regarding music, yeah, you are right. I normally set it lower but had it set wrong this time.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      @@youdigsurf that is a bit odd. I am surfing my Modern2 right now to review shortly. hard to figure out exactly where to be to get as much drive on that board. I know when going down the line, I have my foot forward but the board gets too loose and washes away too much speed on my bottom turns when my foot is too far back, but only some times. Other times, it jets forward. Maybe too much weight forward. that v'd bottom definitely makes you know when you have too much weight forward. I had a wave where I was driving down the line with a ton of speed and when I went to the bottom, I almost went over the handlebars, like someone just pulled my leash.

    Great video. So happy to see a goofy footer. Question for you. I like to think I'm intermediate, but the video footage shows I'm an advanced beginner. After studying my turning on video, I see all manner of kookiness. My arms are moving all over the place, making for a really bad style. Should I just keep polishing my style with the board I'm on (I'm 5'8, 175. I ride a 45 liter Puddle Jumper HP clone), or do you think I should switch to a bigger board to fix my style? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      That is such a good question. I personally think you should go bigger just to tone down thing like arms and any spazy movements. Even to this day if I ride a smaller less volume board, I too get all spazy. How tall is the PJHP clone? And what is the fin setup?
