Kale: “I think the left looks good today, I think we are gonna have to go on our backhand today”. Me: Laughs in goofy
*A-hyuck
I’m not sure y but I rlly like surfing on my backhand
I feel like I get more tourque out of my turns tbh... I have trouble popping up on steeper waves sometimes tho
Backhand for life!
easier to drop knee into sick barrels
on point
Now that I think about it I think we met at Grand Plage in Biarritz like 3 years ago. You were ripping!!
I honestly think you are one of the best surf youtubers ever for learning. I am a grom from west australia called Jake and surf everyday. Whenever i watch your videos i always learn something knew.
:)
That’s awesome grommet! Keep shredding!!
Even as an experienced surfer, I enjoy your channel because it makes me refocus on the little detailed technicalities that I overlook or stray away from over time.
Awesome! It makes me get specific too
My wife says I’m king of backside air
@HelmetBlissta haha that comment cleared most viewers heads.
In my experience the most difficult part is bend the knees properly and do the perfect chair position.
I have always seeing myself turning perfectly my shoulders against the lip but my body straight as a stick and my board pointing the beach ha ha ha .
Congrats for this video. Spot on.
Thanks Kale, you've given me a shred of hope for my weak ass backside!! And now my 14 and 12 year old boys are watching your vids! Thanks again!🤟
Epic!! Thanks Ed! Say hi to the groms for me
As soon as I was good enough to catch waves out the back, I always preferred going backside. Even now that I've improved my front side surfing, backside still feels more "natural" for me. With backside I could just get up to the high line much easier. It took me a much longer time to get up the wave face front side, and I'm still better at it back than front. (goofy foot)
I think it comes from growing up skateboarding ramps and bowls. For me personally I instinctively prefer facing the way I might fall. So facing down the ramp seeing the concrete rather than having my back to the ground. It's the same surfing. Going front side means I can't see where I will fall and that makes it more difficult.
I spent a lot of time working on front side and now I'm really enjoying it but it sounds like my experience is opposite to most. Interesting.
Thanks Kale!!
Your videos videos are honestly so amazing. The in-depth detail while analyzing clips of you provides such an easy understanding of how to increase your skills. I'm only 14 and I live in the States and have only been surfing a couple of years. The many surf lesson videos you have provided have definitely helped me improve my turns and snaps, and also my overall performance throughout the wave. YOU'RE AWESOME!! KEEP MAKING THESE VIDS.
Thanks Jack! Keep shredding magenta

Thanks Kale,
You’ve done it again, another excellent surf training video tutorial !!.
It compliments your “Which Surf Skate is Better?” episode.
Definitely the smoothstar training is fast tracking our surf foundation for improvement. The penny is certainly dropping!!
Whilst I love surfing,, I know that I will never catch as many waves to improve as quickly as I can, than with the correct training, using the smoothstar.
I have no affiliation with smoothstar & was skeptical that I could ever ride any sort of skateboard.
Now I love it and surfskate with my son & daughter on the flat ground, along with training on quarter pipes
You have given us plenty to work on but would love any more smoothstar training. Possibly some turns on a half or quarter pipe would also be wonderful.
Cheers, Happy Days, Thanks🤙🏄🏿♂️
Awesome that’s so good Stephen!
it sucks because i’m so much better at frontside and all my breaks near my house are usually backaide
legend! thanks for putting in a smoothstar ideas
More coming!
Great tips, have been working on this on a smooth Star for a few months, I found I made a big jump in the speed I carried up to the lip when I got my weight distribution right for my bottom turn, I’ve always had too much on the front foot. When practicing on the smooth Star I find I get the weight distribution right when my back foot is over the trucks rather than all the way back and I push by back knee in towards my front... not sure why, but otherwise I seem to end up practicing overloading my front foot when I skate. Cheers for the vid
🙌🏽🏄🏼♂️🍌
Awesome video! The focus on details and reference to smoothstar training makes it perfect 👌
Someone please show this video to Caroline Marks!!
Haha
Love it bro!! The chair method works I remember you saying that in the past! I was telling my mate Wesley about how it helps my backhand bottom turn
AweSome!
also works with front side cutties, helped me dial them in
Kale, can you talk to us about fins and what kind of fins to buy for different types of boards & why? What to look for when buying fins.
Eventually Jaime!! Will most likely make it part of my surfboard selection video
That was another classic video you legend 🔥🔥🔥
Filipe is a bad example though because he weighs as much as my left butt cheek 😎
Hahaha he shreds
@@KalesBroccoli that much is true yes. I heard he lives in one of Kelly's quivers though
Toledo has a very dramatic "windshield wiper" movement on his backhand, much like Dane. The left arms sweeps a ton over the range of motion from 270 degrees to 90 degrees, beginnign with that external rotation you mention. Yours is much more truncated, Kale. Of course, Toledo was surfing bigger waves that were much more lined-up while you were surfing beach break. Excellent video.
Coolycoolycooly
Keep up the great work mate. Can’t wait for the surfboard selection video you mentioned on your insta. Keep shredding yewww 🤙🏼🤙🏼
It’s coming!!
Kale, how do you gauge how aggressively to turn/cut-back on the top-side turn backside? I just got comfortable with the mechanics of the backside bottom turn and some of the top turn (still working on it), but I have a hard time knowing how far ahead of the break/peak I am. What cues do you look for, and what adjustments do you make for each of them?
Thanks for all the videos so far, they've been instrumental in my progression.
If you rotate enough on the bottom turn you should be able to see the lip pretty easily :)
Bacon and egg burgers are the best
When do you think I should upgrade to a fibre glass after having a foamie for a year?
Watch some of my latest videos plus one coming this week
Great!!!! For me it is the most difficult of surf... when I see backhand waves my legs start shaking... this tips were great!!!! thank you!!!!! 🤙🏻🏄♂️✌🏻👊🏻
Kale! Thanks for getting us these videos in such crazy times we're living in!! Being a natural footer, going left is very awkward for me, but I want to get better at it. Your tutorial is SICK, best tips and in depth explanations on RUclips.
The one tidbit I personally observed in both Filipe's and Johanne's surfing is that when they have fully torqued their backside bottom turn, before they snap the turn at the lip, they lift their leading arm from down to UP really fast. They almost whip the arm. I think this really helps to get those insane backside hacks they are known for. Just my thoughts on it.
Can't wait to use this in the surf this week, yew!
Yes for sure!! I describe it to clients almost like a punch down with the leading arm to really generate the torque! Thanks champ!
Great video and tutorials as always! What does externally rotating mean? Palm facing the water?
I believe a way to visualise it would be to imagine you're stood with your arms by your sides thumbs pointing forwards and pinkies back. Externally rotating would move you thumbs away from your body and your pinkies towards the body leaving your palms facing forward. Hope that helps
I'm that 10% that likes back hand versus front side
I’m at a vacay surf spot with 90% lefts. Glad I saw this. Heading out in 30 mins. Will apply these tips.
Oh btw. It worked. Caught the best backside ride and was able to pump. First time ever., great tips
I'm stoked to paddle out and try this. Been running a new quad fin set up and my tail keeps sliding out on me when I go left and start the bottom turn and for the life I haven't been able to figure out why. I got a feeling this will help remedy that issue though. Thanks for all the great work, Kale, these videos are truly top notch.
Went to pumping raglan today as a regular foot surfer, didnt do greeeaat and found myself going straight to your channel when i got home to see if you had a video on surfing backside. Love that i can rely on you to have good videos on anything i need to know! Kind of feel like im cheating though
I love your intro its so cool 😆
Thanks Jessie!
I tried this on my first ride yesterday and it worked...
THANK YOU
Cool! Btw have been using the Sunbutter Sunscreen - cream as a base 'coat' then Zinc on top - so far has been really good and the Zinc stays on your face/head and doesn't track all over everything else. Thanks for tips.
That’s awesome Rodg!! Hope ya shredding mate! Keen to have you on retreat soon!
Who would have thought, there is so much to learn about surfing....😁🏄🏻♀️
🙋🏼♂️🙋🏼♂️
I've been surfing since I was a kid but I've always been dogshit at surfing backside. If I was rated 5/10 surfing forehand, I'd be a 2/10 backside. Thing is I'm goofy and all except one of my local spots are either left-handers or peaky beach-breaks with lots of lefts and rights, and since there's lelss competition for the lefts I've had almost no motivation to get better at back-hand. The hardest part of going backside for me isn't even the bottom turn, its keeping my shoulder open to the face of the wave as I pop up. If the wave is soft and crumbly I can take my time and get going gradually but when it's a faster wave I'm so slow to project down the line that it's closed out on me before I even bottom turn. So frustrating. Ideally I'd go practice at the nearest wave pool but last time I tried surfing one backside it just felt like a waste of 50 bucks because I'd only manage to surf the full wave a couple of times, plus it's emabarassing as hell to have surfed for as long as I have and then to repeatedly miss waves in front of a crowd of people lol
I’m a rare ambidextrous surfer.(can ride switch stance as well as regular) oddly I like my backhand more bc I’ve done it more often to challenge myself. Now it just feels natural
Yew
Backhand surfing : drop the knee, to have more power on your heels, body language always facing where you are going.
Thanks man, working really hard to improve my surf. Your clips are helping much!
Awesome
This is great. I would add that you should be almost touching your butt to the water on the bottom turn, especially if the waves are overhead
gotta love the title😂
😂
Oooo man, there is also waves in my garage. Wont feel so lonely at the peak from here on. =)
What does it mean to externally rotate the arm? How is it different from internal rotation?
This is a revelation 🤙🏻
Your videos help me improve so much! Thank you so much for the content... You’re the goat of surf coaches bro
Wish you would show this with someone goofy on a right. 😊
Wow best explanation ever
thanks for the videos mate!
what board do u ride
Dig the MR twin
greetings from Peru my bro.
How do you work on the balance?
Is it just a thing I must work on?
I probably catch 4/5 waves backside since im a goofy and most waves at my break are rights, and somehow my front is still so much better - the bottom turn, the balance, the way I go into the wave..
Great video. I will give it a go tomorrow.......if find waves on my backhand.😉
If you buy or make yourself some slide gloves, you can practice this on your skateboard. 🤪
Hey Kale, when you surf backside (and frontside I guess), do you keep your back foot at the back of the tail pad the whole time?
See my video foot placement in surfing
thanks for this. I learned to surf on mostly all backhand waves ,in the 1960s,and at soon to be 68, still at it,just goes to prove one can always learn something. I have to say that surfskate really improved my backhand surfing
These videos are amazing, you would have to pay thousands to get this info!! Thanks Kile
Ps - make a video how to record yourself on the beach and equipment required
good stuff keep it up!
Thank you Kale for these great tips !
I live in France and I've been watching your videos for only a month and I already have the feeling that I've made huge progress on my surfing. Especially thanks to surf skate practicing :)
I've noticed that Johanne and Filipe tend to almost completely stretch their leading leg at the beginning of their turns. I tried doing that along the opening shoulder thing and I noticed it helped me backside pumping as well as backside truning. Is that a good or a bad thing to do ?
Cheers mate !
Thanks, kale had a problem with my bottom turn. Guess my position wasn't right
Gracias amigo 😊
you def compete !
hey i don't have money for a one of those high end skateboards for surfing but i already have a Ripstick. Could that work to
Nah
I feel like im more comfortable on my frontside but surf better on my backside not really sure on whats happening
Top coaching Kale B! Many thanks from Spain.
F$(€& should of watched this two days ago when there was swell at my left point break and where i was sucking on my bottom turn, good reminder.. Too bad ther es no swell left hahahah
Great tutorial
Hey thanks for the tips, i noticed one more tips that you can give it to us, it's about the way we should make our turn since it's way more difficile on backhand to come hit the lips
Thanks for your video pretty helpful!
I always felt like I can get more vertical and snap with more power on my backside. Plus all the waves were rights where I grew up.
Thanks Kale I just picked up a smoothstar myself and just had a suggestion for next time, it would be good to see the movements you make once in real time so we can compare to our own footage, otherwise love your videos always waiting for the next one!
Johanne Defay, definitely one of the best backsides in surfing
God stuff kale, another fun and insightful vid : )
Kale cheers great video and really good advice. Trying to get my hands on a smoothstar! Not an easy thing in the uk anywhere to be honest!
Definitely going to try this!
Great video and tips (:
Awesome videos dude, always a pleasure to watch! 🤙
This really helped dude, keep doing what you love!
Aswome! Just what i was looking for.
The graphics and visual aids are a massive level up to this content.
Cheers dude 🏄♂️
Yew!
These are really great videos man.. nicely done!
Only legends put there hand between the car door and a randoms when opening it!
Can you please talk about front foot and back foot surfin
It shouldn’t be the focus.
Got some waves on my back hand and opened my leading shoulder externally........it work awsome. Heaps more power the turn!!!😉😉. Thanks Kales.
That’s awesome David!!
Kale

very good tips!!! as always!
Hey Kale! Maybe you can help here. I am goofy for everything, even for sliding with my socks on a slippery floor or sliding trying to reach a short shot during a tennis match . But I've been surfing for 3/4 years and always poped up regular and it actually feels good and got to a solid intermediate level, but it feels like now that I need to move more my board , maybe surfing goofy would be better. Even practicing with a smoothstar doesn't help cause I'm 100% goofy there. Any thoughts??
Commit to just one. There’s no other option haha
Hey mate, i have an issue i have come across, when I'm surfing small surf on my back hand i can generally put a few turns together. When the surf is bigger 3-5ft i don't know if i should be trying to pull in straight away so i tend to go down on a straighter angle and try a big bottom turn but i keep slipping out and getting mashed. Love your videos
Hey bro, its important to go not to far down because you will lose speed like you said. You want to do it when you still have a bit of that speed to help drive you up
Hello kales, please change you configurations un the subtitles, for the spanihs. Tanks bro..
Not sure what you mean here bruski
Left after left and not worry about a crowd. You just described surfing in Samoa.
Few other sneaky spots around too
Great video. I've heard it helps to point your thumb palm up at the wave as you do your bottom turn.
Any advice on beating sections backside? Maybe I take off too deep going left...not sure. I get behind sections far more going left than going right. Maybe you've done this video...but pumping for speed backside would be great. thanks.
Same principles as forehand just in reverse :) all about flow and being in the upper half
First
I love your videos
Great clip, Kale. I noticed Johanne straightened her front leg on the bottom turn. Other pros like Freddy Patachia do this as well. Is there an advantage for doing that other than for shifting the weight onto the back foot and style? I also noticed that they don't do it on every single bottom turns, only for some. Is there a certain section where you can do that vs others where you don't?
For lip line turns generally the bottom turn is more extended as you’re not trying to explode on the lip but just maintain speed in order to project with it
What can you offer us for tips to improve our backhand kickouts?
Not needed haha
Kales Broccoli hmm well just last month I had a rather large set wave come my way, did my best to get in the barrel and go as fast as I can, the door shut on me because I didn’t have the oomph or the technique to get over the back of the wave and I didn’t have enough time to find an exit so I hit the eject button and broke a month old board. Just wanting to improve on that experience.
My backside speed generation sucks. Thanks for the tip. Cheers!
Yew! You’ll get there!
8:47 smoothstar training
awesome contant!!
these are so good!
Thanks Kale! Great vid as usual! But my backhand starts to suck way before that first turn...! When I 'pop up' (stagger to my feet) , on any size wave, I have an urge to grip the outside rail and pig dog it, and I'm left crouching too low, and gripping the rail and unable to manoeuvre... any tips?
Let go!
Surf skate training will help
I just tried these and it legit worked thanks sooo much
Sick
