  • A motorcyclist take on helmet safety standards.
    This is a video merely addressing the plying consensus of every motorcyclist, it is neither a compliment or condemnation of any brand or standard. A righteous effort to be able to have the freedom of choice. A genuine request to Bangalore traffic police to reconsider their decision on persuading motorcylists to use an ISI certified helmet whereas other Certification such as DOT, ECE R22.05, SHARP and SNELL does hold equal or better safety standards. A kind request to re-evaluate the decision considering the implication of this decision on motorcyclist.

    Well... You wear a NASA made anti asteroid super titanium meteor smasher helmet, the cops will still fine you for not having that ISI sticker. However, a half cut watermelon with the ISI sticker on is fine by them.

  • @shravansp24
    @shravansp24 6 лет назад +308

    the main problem is not with their breaking but with the amounth of flex! every hit the ISI helmet takes, i goes deep inside and again flexes out like a water bottle! so it's definitely going to affect the head.. whereas the dot certified helmet was very sturdy and didn't have much flex!
    you should have tried them with a watermelon or something inside

      Shravan Also, this video hardly shows how well a helmet will work in case of a crash. A helmet is designed to decelerate the skull of the wearer over as long a duration as possible. That means the helmet and its contents will have to be in motion. Hitting a stationary helmet with a sledgehammer only shows the strength of the shell, *not* its ability to protect the soft mushy brain of a human being.

      devashish chauhan yes... I haven't seen any isi helmets with an outer shell and an inner shell and then the thermocol lining though... At the same time have seen many dot and ece ones having such multiple layers. Which means they will take a lot more impact before transferring that energy to the inside. Along with that the way they have a lot more padding than normal isi helmets means that the head won't go to an abrupt stop in case of a collision, which is the reason why some riders loose consciousness and sometimes go into comma in case they come to a violent stop. Helmets with multiple layers, padding and international ratings any day over isi one's as far as I'm concerned.

      These helmets are supposed to take single impact from accident in a short span of few seconds and not multiple impacts. So ISI helmets from reputable brands have good enough protection. DOT helmets are expensive and not everyone can afford them, but its helpful for those into motor racing or high speeds

A motorcycle crash helmet is designed to decelerate the skull of the wearer over as long a duration as possible. That means the helmet and its contents will have to be in motion. I agree on the order of how tough the tests are, but that doesn't NECESSARILY mean a helmet with a more stringent certification is safer than a helmet with lesser verification.
      For example, a helmet that far exceeds ECE certification could be safer than a helmet that barely earns SNELL.
      SHARPS is nice because they actually tell you the results of the test.

    • @superchargedpetrolhead
      @superchargedpetrolhead 6 лет назад +7

      snell and ece are just on crash worthiness and safety hence i think they are standards and sharp is more of a well rounded test which consider safety along with some comfort and fit and finish and hence a rating i guess and helmets made or sold in europe should be sharp rated and it is more of a european specific testing, i guess

    • @twistednemo
      @twistednemo 6 лет назад +2

      Wasn't the 2005 Snell standard dangerous for street use because the liner was to be kept extra stiff to ensure the ability to absorb impact forces in multiple head collisions in a crash? Also, the video does not demonstrate the ability of a crash helmet to absorb impact. To test that, the helmet needs to be in motion. We are not talking about construction site hard hats here after all.

      @@letsgearup6675 Thanks for the valuable video. My question is aren't ISI helmets from Reputed brands good enough for City riding which are in the speed range of 40-65kmph at most. And there have been many instances of accidents within city limits where riders have been Safe without head injury with ISI helmet.
      In your test the ISI helmet did show to good protection despite 2 hits, Helmets are designed for single hits, the remaining impacts after first one are considerably of less force so using Hammer twice isn't best way to simulate results for real world .
      Everyone cannot afford 4-5k ECE of DOT certified helmets. The reputed brand ISI helmets cost from 800Rs. To 2000 Rs and in my opinion is enough for City conditions. Will appreciate your response on it

      Plus the road is not in motion in a crash, the rider is. That means the helmet and head are in motion and the helmet has to decelerate the head of the wearer so as to keep the mushy brain from turning into scrambled eggs. The test in the video does very, very little to show how safe a helmet will be in a crash. This test only focuses on the shell not the liner.

    Helmets must protect head hitting on something, not being hit by a hammer while resting on the floor.
    There's lot of difference, because the mass exerting force on the liner is inside.
    outer shell must "amplify" the contact area on wich the head must slow down his speed and the eps liner is requested to brake the head in a given space....

    Not to sound like am coming from a different school of thought but the age of the helmet also matters greatly. D.O.T. Certified helmets are tested at a speed of 15 mph at best. SHARP rated are the highest. In India we should do fine with ISI Rating as long as it's fastened properly by the rider. Hammering helmets is good but always ride safely first. Great video. I own a MT Helmets Axxis Falcon myself. Cheers!

      Phantom Rides coz you don't cross 15kmph?...absurd

      Ashish that's my point itself lol... Don't we all ride above 15 mph and what is the safety of any of these helmets combined with other factors included in a crash say vehicles, objects on the side of the road, terrain etc. So you can never be 100% safe. My next helmet with be Sharp 5 star rated for track days.

      Actually, that is a valid point about the speed rating. The 2005 Snell standard was dangerous for street riding because the liner was too stiff as it was designed to absorb forces from *multiple* head impacts.
      Also, this video hardly shows how well a helmet will work in case of a crash. A motorcycle crash helmet is designed to decelerate the skull of the wearer over as long a duration as possible. That means the helmet and its contents will have to be in motion. In case of a crash, the helmet shell has to distribute the force of the impact over a large area and the liner has to compress and dissipate the kinetic energy of the wearer's head. Hitting a stationary helmet with a sledgehammer only shows the strength of the shell, *not* its ability to protect the soft mushy brain of a human being.

    1 Important Point u missed guys!!
    In the Real World, nobody will likely be Hit/Crash from the Top side of the Helmet, Front, sideways or Back of the Helmets will be Hit or Impacted during a Crash. So Nxt time try to test these Helmets from the Front, sides or Back side. 👍👍

    The funny thing is that DOT are not actually tested. They put a sticker that looks like a helmet and supposed to meet certain standards but they do not crash samples to see if helmets handle them good. Snell and a few others do crash and check

    Check out RyanF9. He did low cost but fairly scientific tests with helmets. He put a melon in each helmet with a shock sticker stuck to the melon. Then dropped the helmet from about 3 meters. Pretty close to how the DOT/ECE/SNELL/SHARP tests are done but without their expensive machines. There are shipping stickers (such as shockwatch?) for 25g-100g.
