Absolutely brilliant interpretation in a beautiful setting. Technically perfect (with nice trills vintage Russell), played in the contemplative mood (prelude, fugue, sarabande) that this suite deserves and, judging from the position of the capodastro in the right key as well: C minor (instead of the usual A minor transcriptions). Is David Russell setting a new standard here, after the historic Bach recordings of John Williams and Julian Bream?
@@johnplunkett Well, OK. Julian Bream's impressive interpretation made me study the 997 prelude and fugue myself, John Williams's Bach suites are indeed the unsurpassed 'top' thanks to his superhuman technique and virtuosity, and Monno's 997 prelude and fugue (which I discovered last year) are gems. So let's say: a new standard for today (it *is* a brilliant and highly enjoyable interpretation by a master), also because of the combination with the beautiful setting in Portugal. As for sight-reading: I guess he does it as a memory help. The pieces are too difficult to 'sight read': you have to learn them by heart (own experience).
We used to have to go to live concerts to see anyone at this level play or watch the few VHS's we had of famous performances over and over. Coming back to classical guitar 20 years later and being able to watch lessons on youtube, epic performances and print free sheet music is like I time traveled.
That's why I keep saying that RUclips is the most worthy subscription of my money! What a wonderful unique performance! I've heard these pieces like hundreds of times, but the pureness and very obvious touch from David's soul make this interpretation a divine gift! Thank you Omni Foundation and David for being generous and sharing all this beauty with us!
the Guitar Sound and Technic Playing at the highest Level . Great Guitar from Mathias Dammann , played by the One of the Best Classical Guitar Master in our Generation. Bravo!
whoaa...that embellishment at 5.05 tho...this has been one of my favourite preludes and I'm inspired to learn it again. Saw David Russell in 1988 at the Williamson Art Gallery, Wirral, I'd never heard of him, but I'll never forget it. He was then and is now still, the best classical guitarist in the world. imo
Awesome !! quel talent !
To me, this interpretation really speaks to the heart. The gestures finely crafted in each phrase and subphrases. Really speaks to me like a beautiful prose or an epic poem.
Inspirational playing capturing Bach's wider orchestral styles like I've never heard on guitar. Immaculate playing. I'm re-inspired by this playing, like your concert in Cheshire inspired me so many summers ago. Best wishes to you and Maria.
Every note comes alive with the creative beauty of this masterpiece. This performance raised my mind and heart to spiritual joy. Thank you Maestro David!

Impresionante David Russell!!!! Impecable!!!! Mi admiración ante semejante capacidad musical y técnica!!! Saludos desde Patagonia Argentina Fernando Hidalgo 3ro
Superfine technique, exquisite musical taste, superb location. In the world dominated by the noise of habit, the state of exception expressed by the union of the arts is the return to a place lost forever. The Artist defines himself as such when he brings that memory to his technical baggage, elevating us "sub specie aeternitatis" from the contingency of his sonic gesture. Thank you Master 🙏
Thank you Omni Foundation for this legendary performance , You tube ROCKS ! editing and camera work were on point . Superb live Performance Mr. Russell 🎼🎸😊

A lovely series: thanks to David and Omni for bringing it to us: beautiful building and wonderful playing as always (plus David is right that acoustic in the Chapter House is glorious).
David, you're definitely a master of the classical guitar! Thank you for this meaningful interpretation of Bach's beautiful piece of music. I now have all 4 of the Bach's Suite for Lute series!!Thank you Maestro Russell👏👏👏👏👏❣
Thanks M° Russell, just so fabolous Your performance of such a Bach gem : It sounds perfect in c minor, fantastic Dammann. Best regards from Rome (we met at your masterclass many years ago...)
¡Bravo! ¡Bravo! ¡Bravo! ¡Muchas gracias, David! Mi más profunda admiración y todo mi respeto, maestro. Espero que sigas trabajando duro y que haya muchos más regalos como éste que disfrutamos tanto.
WOW‼️❣️‼️✨👍🎵🎶🎵BRAVO AND THANK YOU 🙏 THIS is EXQUISITE. The attention to detail, seemingly effortless trills and ornamentation, perfect tempi, POSTURE😁👍✨‼️
Que preciosidad Maestro🤗🙏☺️que gran gusto en escoger este repertorio. Las obras de Laúd son maravillosas en nuestro instrumento así como complejas Gracias por este mágico y emocionante regalo. 🌹Gracias
I listened to this recording here and there on repeat throughout the day. I finally had time in the evening to sit in my comfy chair and listen to it with 100% of my attention. When the sarabande began, my eyes closed as if by themselves and I was transported far away. It felt like I was floating out of my chair. Bravo and thank you.

Well done sir. I imagine the a young Johan, throwing a rock at a bird to elicite more song. How isolated and arrogant he must have seemed, to try to co-exist with mortals who didn't feel the alure of algebraic form, or the beauty of suspense and delayed gratification. What a glorious mind. You give each note life. The maestro would be pleased.

Agree! Although Galbraith's interpretation is also stunning. This is better than bream or Williams!
No point in using a capo unless the guitarist is playing with other people.

I personally don't like comparisons. If you like it then great! It is not a competition, imo.
I wouldn’t call it “a new standard” but definitely a new, and beautiful, beautiful approach.
The fact these incredible performances are just free to watch makes me realize how much I take RUclips for granted.
I live in a classical guitar no mans land. I'm truly grateful for being able to witness stuff like this.
RUclips certainly has its moments

David Russell is the Patron Saint of the Guitar
You are very important Master, for the planet, the Humanity, and above all, during those wild times. My highest thank to you and to our beloved Bach.
