All good mate. I see your getting out on the Manukau a bit. There were a couple 55-65cm snaps taken just before lockdown out west Auckland side, land based. Might be a good season. Get those rigs tied up and ready...🤞
Nice vid. Curious to know what is your favourite rig for fishing off the rocks? I get sick of losing gear/tackle off the rocks. Every 3-4 casts i get snagged and lose my gear/tackle and line, then have to rig up again, 3-4 cast's and yep, get snagged and lose gear/tackle and line again.
East coast would be a single circle hook strayline rig with the addition of a ball sinker directly on top of hook for extra distance. West coast would be a ledger rig with a lighter line addition to bottom of rig for sinker so if a fish drags you into shit, you can break off the sinker without losing the fish or entire rig. Another big time saver out there is to pre tie your rigs at home and store individually in sandwich bags. Time is wasted tying rigs out there. The more time you have a bait in the water the greater the chance of success. Watch my 'Darkmoon Snapper Secrets' vid for east coast rock fishing or 'The strongest knot for a ledger rig" for west coast rocks. Chur bro.
You'll get small livebaits out further with a slide bait but be able to work a ledger rig faster. So i'd say situation would dictate best option. For example, Snapper go for those smaller livebaits and even an undersized snapper will destroy a live piper so if there are a lot around (over summer) the quicker deploying method would be preferable. However if there are birds working out far...could be kingis working around the outside of them, so the extra distance gained from slidebaiting would be preferable.
@@DarkmoonAngler thanks for that, have you found using a normal balloon rig with a piper limits your catch to just kingfish? Trying to find a way to deploy small livebaits so I can target both snapper and kingfish
@@scottjohnston2571 yes it is limiting. kingfish often feed over the bottom when visibility low or low light. I often just use single circle with 2oz ball on top. hook the piper through beak/head and lightly cast. picks up snapper and kingfish. however with piper baits, snapper have a tendency to hit them mid section, bending them in half, so often the piper head just pulls off with the hook. tail hook the piper and kingfish spit them out...
depends what your targeting. 1/0-2/0 trevally 3/0-7/0 snapper 7/0+ kingfish etc. Would recommend about a 4/0 for general anything could happen fishing.
ledger rig is great but the only problem i have is wen casting, distances is greatly reduced unless i use small hooks for the ledger rig. but definitely helps to use it wen the running rig isn't working at all. how is it ur getting the kingfish haha XD i've been trying so hard trying to get a kingfish but man even without livebait u seem to get them so easily
Been having a good season on them. but also have been putting in a decent effort on them. Always putting live baiting as priority one. Caught a John Dory and plenty of good snapper on livies lately in the Manukau too. Yet last year I only managed a few rats in the harbour. Bit of luck this season for sure.
Bro! So stoked. Followed your ledger rig tutorial and nailed my best snap of the beach to date 6.3 kilo. Cheers great info
Awesome to hear! Worth the effort tying 👍
Just the tutorial I needed. Thanks for sharing and great fishing 👍

@@DarkmoonAngler I'm really digging the Manukau. I can't believe I've neglected the harbour all these years. Love your work mate.

Awesome insight! Do you recommend a ledger rig or slidebait rig to get small livebaits (piper, jack macks, etc) out off the rocks?

Sorry for another question but just wondering your thoughts on mono to Fluoro double uni vs mono to fluoro with a swivel connection
Never boring, just great content as always! Now for the serious question,
How do I enroll at Darkmoon fishing school? 🤣🤜

Awesome tutorial. You learn something new everyday.
What size circle hook you use for your ledgers?
