    DUDE. I got a 96 ASVAB, 127 DLAB. Maybe you’re onto something regarding ASVAB-DLAB correlation.
    I do however disagree with you, as far as how well the test assess one’s ability to learn a foreign language. I knew a lot of German and a little Russian going into the test. Both languages helped me tremendously. To learn a foreign language you must understand the parts of speech, which is vital to even understanding what the test is telling you to do. Foreign language learning also taught me about noun case, verb/noun conjugation, adjectival agreement, word order, stressed syllables, etc.
    Being accustomed to moving parts of sentences around, and listening for key distinctions REALLY helped.
    For example, in German:
    Ich esse den Apfel I ate the apple)
    Is the same as: Den Apfel esse ich
    The example is on a macro scale, but within a test, it can really demonstrate one’s ability to pick up on foreign languages.

    I took this test yesterday and had this version of the test. Luckily, I passed because it was really hard. I have a degree in linguistics and this test was still very challenging. Also, the air force recently changed the required score from 110 to 100.

      So you had the three lines with boxes, and diagrammatic reasoning portion? No stressed syllables, no picture portion?

    Watched this before the DLAB the other day. There's apparently 3 versions. I got a version that was just like the study guide. But thanks for the help! I'm going to MEPs Tuesday and if it goes well I'll ship out in a few weeks as ground linguist.

      This video is over a year old now, and by the time you get to the DLI I'll still be here. That's crazy.

      Really crazy

      I know this question was directed to Tim, but I figured I would at least give you the info that I was given. Before I answer you should know that I am not currently at DLI nor have I been there, but I will be there within the next few months and have researched and asked others who are there. Please don't take my answer as 100% truth.
      The time you are at DLI depends on the language you are studying. "Easier" languages are less than a year while the "harder" ones are like a year and a half. The rest are somewhere in between. You do not get to pick your language. You get to write out a wishlist of 3 languages, and you might be given one of those languages, but it all comes down to what the your branch of service needs. As far as being married and being at DLI, from what I understand your spouse (and kids if applicable) can live off base with you once you finish your first phase of training. I believe it's after about a month or so, but I can't confirm that.
      I don't have any info on the Ranger contract, etc. Sorry.
      I hope this helps you out. Maybe Tim can give more insight.

    Hi! I take the dlab Tuesday the 24th and I was wondering if they still implement the test you took?

    • @invictablue1
      @invictablue1 7 лет назад

      Desiree Dyer how was the test? What did you score? I take it in a couple days so it would really be helpful to hear from you!

    • @Desd436
      @Desd436 7 лет назад

      invictablue1 hi! The test was ok. It was definitely shorter than I thought it would be. The hardest part for me was the stressed syllables part. I bought 2 study books but neither really helped with that section. The other sections where a cake walk after I studied the study books. I can email them to you if you would like. And I only got a 95

    • @Desd436
      @Desd436 7 лет назад +2

      invictablue1 also my test did not have any abstract reasoning or math. It was just like the study books

    • @invictablue1
      @invictablue1 7 лет назад

      Desiree Dyer I recently purchased the official DLAB training Manual and The complete DLAB study guide. Are these the two books you got and if so which one would you say helped you the most? Also I am also finding the stressed syllables part to be a bit challenging, on the test were English words used?

    • @Desd436
      @Desd436 7 лет назад +1

      invictablue1 yes those are the two I have, and they both have certain sections that where more helpful. For the dlab training manual it explained the rules section a little better to me, but in that one the practice test is definitely a lot easier and wasn't all that challenging. The other one however has a tougher practice test. All and all I think the complete study guide was better. Also the things that where different than what the study guide says is you can view the rules at any time, and also the person who you have to listen two does have a middle eastern accent which I had trouble with when it came down to the section of the test where you had to hear certain vowel sounds. The syllables part and the visual part are not in English. The syllable part was the toughest part in my opinion. Neither study guides really accurately describe it well. Let me know what you get on it,

      Thanks for the quick response! Depending on how I score on the ASVAB (should be just fine), I'm looking to take the DLAB. I don't like tests you can't really prepare for, so I'm a little anxious haha.

    What does a linguist do? I’m gonna be taking the DLAB but I don’t wanna take the job if I don’t know what it’s about.... my main concern is, is the job needed at all Airforce locations? I’m trying to increase my chances of getting stationed in England so I don’t wanna take a job that’s not needed there.

    • @timwoolard1465
      @timwoolard1465  6 лет назад

      Linguists get stationed in very few locations. That chance of you getting stationed in England as a linguist is close to 0%.

    • @tonysmith7702
      @tonysmith7702 6 лет назад

      Getting stationed in England. As a airborne Arabic or Farsi linguist, you have a very good chance of getting stationed at RAF Mildenhall England. That is one of the bases you can get stationed. As a airborne Arabic or Farsi, your base choices are RAF Mildenhall England, Offutt AFB Nebraska, Davis Monthan AFB Tucson Arizona.

    What if I get a 112, can I refuse the role?

    • @timwoolard1465

      Your recruiter will probably try to pressure you into taking a linguist job if you pass the DLAB. You can always say no, but they might stop working with you.

    Planning on taking this test in the next month. Just wanted to know what are your current updates with going to the dli or if you knew about any changes to the testing or scoring for the dlab

    • @apritiard
      @apritiard 7 лет назад +2

      About the test, I don't think the scoring will change any time soon. The test itself changes periodically but the sections stay the same for the most part. The DLI is neat. Monterey is cool. I only have a few months left here though.

    Is there no longer a visual portion?

    • @timwoolard1465
      @timwoolard1465  8 лет назад

      +April Anamisis Not really. The abstract reasoning part IS visual, but it's not like the old language-oriented portion that had pictures and possible word meanings.

      +Tim Woolard Thanks for the prompt response! I'm lucky to have stumbled upon your video since it seems everything has changed. What would you have done to prep for the number portion?

    • @timwoolard1465
      @timwoolard1465  8 лет назад

      April Anamisis Personally, I wouldn't have done anything because I'm lazy. Seriously though, I've never seen anything like it. I suppose it's just quick number memorization. Something like this might help: www.humanbenchmark.com/tests/number-memory
      But remember, digits are also being added and subtracted so it's slightly more than just memorization.

    DLPT is fraught, because contractor who suppose to make legitimate test, has stole half of the budget and put out low quality product. I know ppl who speaking, writing, reading Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian languages can not score above 2+ on the lower rating lol

    • @stementhusiast816
      @stementhusiast816 6 лет назад

      Most native English speakers will not score 3 in their own language if it is equivalent to the C2 level in the European Framework Language Test.

    I was wondering how you were so good at math an saw that it's because you're just naturally born with having that natural talent. So for people wondering why they "suck" at math, it's because you're just not born with that. It doesn't run in your genetics. You're lucky though dude that you're smart haha....
