To specify, the book I used to study is The Official DLAB Training Manual by Robert J. Cunnings and yes it helps but practice with a partner if you want the real DLAB test experience.
Bought the book. Had three days to study. Scored a 113. The book will not save you, but it helps to at least familiarize yourself with what you will be hearing. Also, having knowledge of the “rules” makes it easier to to remember what you need to be doing on each section. Lastly, the time catches up to you quickly if you try to translate before you listen to the answers. My suggestion would be concentrate on the rules that are easy to remember and eliminate the answers that don’t follow those easier rules.
Thank you 🙌🏽
This comment was the most helpful advice for the test. Aside from get the cunnings book, which everyone says.
Also in the video he mentioned to use your fingers for the stress portion. That’s solid advice. This technique will be useful for every section in the audio portion.
The book is a waste of money and time. If you have the ability, you will pass the DLAB.
@@kevinjohnson6549 I doubt it. You have the ability already. Do you know the DLAB test is not a new test. It has been around for decades. Before youtube or people trying to tell you by reading this book, it will help you pass. People passed then and failed then. If you think it is as easy as studying some pamphlet for a few hours, then there would be a lot more linguist and the job would not in demand. I gave you my opinion. A airborne Farsi/Dari linguist vet who went in blind and took the DLAB test and passed like a lot of others like me at the time.
@@kevinjohnson6549 Read what the thread poster wrote, "the book will not save you." a lot of people in comment here, went in cold and passed the test. But if you think the book helped you, good for you.
I just took my DLAB yesterday and I scored a 140!
That’s dope!!! Any advice ??
HOLY SHIT
Nice job dude!🙌
140 does not mean you are going to do well at DLI. It means you qualify to be a linguist. People at DLI with just passing and High DLAB scores rock out on a daily basis. People with High DLAB scores and just passing scores can have trouble at DLI also and they do.
@@daniellechenault3025 A good nights rest and breakfast the morning of the test is the best advice.
Just took the DLAB yesterday and scored a 112. This video was extremely helpful and I also didn't believe that I passed after I took it.
I just took the DLAB yesterday and found out this morning I scored a 117! Thanks for the help, this video was very informative and the study guide you recommended I believe helped tremendously.
Dope man glad to have helped
congratulations on passing! i take mine in two weeks, thank you for the insight
Thanks and Good Luck!!
How’d it go ?
@@daniellechenault3025 it was the weirdest test i’ve ever taken... i got a 103 which isn’t too bad. if i would’ve done more practice questions for the picture portion i think i would have done better
@@simonnerenee Good for you! best for your future.
@@simonnerenee Take the test again. Most likely you will pass the next time.
do you get any type of scratch paper tp write the rules on or anything? or do you just have to memorize them
Bought the new DLAB book, I wouldn't say it was the only reason that saved me me but watched these videos before and studied the new one called 'THE NEW DLAB STUDY GUIDE.' I bought the other manual on kindle that he refers to, which is 10 Years old just to compare info, but the new one that was put on there is made for 2023 and pretty accurate to the DLAB. If u do the practice test on there with a partner reading it to you, it helps alot. Was able to get above 120 which is apparently v competitive for all languages.
Dear Sherpa, I have a question. About "the mean boy cried", should it become "boya meana yacried" or "boaaya meana yacried"? there is a youtube video that said the answer is "boya" but I thought the subject should be added "aa" in the middle? I checked two study guides and both have different answers. It confuses me a lot. Can you help? Thanks a lot! PS: I will fly there to get the test on Sunday (nervous)
It’s most likely aa, I would just follow the instructions and disregard the RUclips video. Good luck!👌
Thank you. I packed everything now and am ready to fly tomorrow. I will let you know the results. Thank you for everything. PS: I need to pray tonight :)
Thank you for the advice! Do you get a pen and paper like with the asvab?
I know Persian Farsi, Dari, and Turkish but my English language is not good. How can I pass for dlap test? What is dlap test about?
For starters buy the book from Amazon. And take the sample tests to see how you do. Your English doesn’t need to be great, you just need to know the difference between subject, verbs and nouns.
How long did you study for? I have about 10 days and idk if that's too little or too much time.
I studied for a week or so! Which was plenty of time since I studied for like 1-2 hours each day. Once you get the rules down, it’s really just quizzing your self or having someone quiz you! I’d recommend you get another dlab prep book and use those practice questions for extra practice.
@@DubiousYuTuber awesome, thank you!
Took dlab at age 17 with no studying or prep. Passed!
taking mine next week, any advice on sentence structure? im not too worried about the verbal differences but the new rules on each question for the second section seems like a tough hill
How did you do
During the visual portion, are you able to refer back to the images?
Yes, the images are up on the screen the whole time.
Great video. Thank you very much! I will take the DLAB soon. About the stress syllable, is it word stress syllable or sentence stress syllable, or both?
It’s just word stress syllable, and you’re welcome!
Thank you very much! I will have my DLAB test on 8/9. The one I am scared is the grammar part. I memorize the 9 rules now but I think the audios speak fast with accent. I do not know if I can catch that! any advice? Thanks again!
Do u get scrap paper or smthing to keep track of it?
Even though, it has been a while...Way to go!!!
Did you use any other studying materials or resources?
Do you learn your score before leaving the testing center? Thanks.
Yes.
Good job!! Thanks for the video. Did they show you the sentence and then you choose to push the play button?
Yeah they only show you the sentence while it’s being read out loud after that it disappears
@@DubiousYuTuber did you take a practice test?
@@alexchurch7955 yes I did the practice test with a partner so it could resemble the actual test!
Nice 👍 well done , can you remember the questions and what did you do to study 📚 bro ?
Taking the dlab tomorrow! I know a few languages other than english and I’ve also prepared for the test so I’m hoping I get a good score 🤞🏽
Best of luck man!
@@DubiousYuTuber thank you! I scored a 123 on my dlab 😅 I totally thought I failed the dlab once I was done with it but when I got handed the results I actually did pretty well 🤣
So is the grammar section in Esperanto as well?
No, only the stress portion is in Esperanto.
The other sections just has the English grammar rules added to them so the words look weird! Like ya- being added to the verbs, so running would be translated to yarunning based on the verb rule.
@@DubiousYuTuber Thanks! I take it on March 8th and have been studying like crazy for over 2 months now.
@@davidwerner2517 good luck you got this!
Do not worry about it. Trying to study Esperanto is not going to help you pass the DLAB. Either you have the aptitude or you do not.
@@DubiousYuTuber I took it three months ago and the stress part this time was basically fake Arabic. Mi parolas la Esperanton kaj mia testo ne havis alion similan de E-o.
I take mine tomorrow morning. Thanks for the tips!
Good luck! Let me know how it goes! I'm getting ready to ship out on March 18th!
@@DubiousYuTuber I got a 127 on the DLAB so I'll be signing my contract beginning of Q2! Good luck shipping out tomorrow, I'll be in the same shoes soon enough.
Scored a 119 today!!! (Just turned 18 years old) don't buy the book. It's a waste. You'll either know it or ya won't. This was by far the best tips video
You are some kind of smart! Congratulations!
What grammar terms do I need to know? Other than noun/verb/adjective
That’s all you need to know man! I highly recommended you get the book, the test is the exact same!
@@DubiousYuTuber can you pin the book title?
I am a former airborne Farsi and Dari linguist. I really doubt that book will help you pass the test. Trying to study for something you have or do not have the ability to do is useless. Either you know it or you do not. The book can only help you familiarize yourself with the test and that is about it. The DLAB test is designed to see if you have the ability to learn languages fast/aptitude. DLI is a tough school. If you do not have a aptitude for languages, you will wash out of DLI. Plain and simple. Even people with high DLAB scores and low ones wash out of DLI. Some people say that book helped them pass the DLAB and I highly doubt that. I did not study for the DLAB and passed. I have seen that book/pamphlet and I think you would be better off studying basic grammar/sentence structure. The night prior to the test, get some good sleep and eat breakfast in the morning. Stop stressing over something you can not control.
Hi there,
It’ll still be a month or two before I take the dlab, so I don’t want this to sound like I’m throwing the hypothetical study towel in, but I have a small basis in Farsi as well as several other languages on their designated list and wanted to know if they could waive my potentially failing scores in leu of this prior knowledge?
@@fionac.562 Request to take the DLPT for Farsi if you are fluent in it. Reading, listening and speaking. If you get a 2 in reading and listening and they need Farsi linguist, it is possible for you to go in as a linguist
@@tonysmith7702 oh thank you so much, that’s great! What is the score range?
@@fionac.562 You have to get a 2 in listening and a 2 in reading on the DLPT. They will test you up to a 3. It startes at 0, 0+,1,1+ up to 3
The book is only available on Kindle 😫😫
I have mine tomorrow 😬, I've learned 3 foreign languages on my own over the past few years so I hope my skills in language learning will come in handy on the test.
I don’t doubt you‘ll have an advantage over someone who doesn’t speak another language, but you really have to prepare for this test in order to pass.. IMO
@@DubiousYuTuber I just got out and I passed with a 132. It would have been easier if I had prepared but I just decided to wing it. 😂
Test seems like a beast
It is. Either you have the ability or you do not. Just take and and do not sweat it.
Will we be provided with a pencil and paper?
No. But you have time to memorize the rules. Buy the study guide.
Can I ask for pen and paper when I do the test?
I don’t believe they give that option, but it’s worth asking!
how has life as a CTI been?
Thanks for this, I take the dlab in two days from now.
I take mine in 4 days and have zero confidence in my abilities.
Keep us updated
You’ll do just fine I believe. I’m nervous too, but I have hopes for you first. I’ll join later ;)
Matthew How did you do?
@@pep590 i ended up scoring a 91
@@matthewweinhold427 Does that qualify you for any languages as I'm not sure of the minimum qualifying scores. I salute you for going for it.
Could you go back to the rules that were given for each section?
It’s exactly the same as the book👌
@@DubiousYuTuber great thank you, I take mine tomorrow with the ASVAB so it’s going to
Be a fun day. Congrats on passing!
@@FatQuacker dude good luck! Focus very closely on how the world endings sound! o and a are pronounced very similarly with a very vague difference in some of the questions!!
@@DubiousYuTuber thanks man, your video is easily one of the best ones that I’ve looked at on this topic, and thanks for the pointer!
@@FatQuacker eyy thanks brotha, hope it helps! 👌
I am taking the test in two weeks, I’m so nervous
I suggest studying the book and quiz yourself routinely for the next 2 weeks 👌
Alfonso Flores hahah I’ve noticed that same guy patrolling this comments section is doing the same in other DLAB videos as well LOL. How long did you study for until the test? And was the book the only resource you used?
Taking mine next week, really nervous
Bout to take this test in the morning. I've researched what it's like but I'm against studying for aptitude tests. If I make it i make it. If I don't i wasn't cut for my ideal job anyways.
Respectable, Good luck!👌
@@DubiousYuTuber thank you. I got a 117 despite the instructor who took over interrupting me for 3 questions to remove a water bottle lmao. The O and E being similar really helped to know that. I paid more attention.
Congratulations on passing. I agree, either you have the aptitude or not. Trying to study for it is a waste of time. If you have the aptitude, more than likely, you will pass.
@@tonysmith7702 Maybe, but if you are someone that is one the fence and perhaps the studying go you 1 or 2 more answers correctly and then you passed, then it is a Help.
taking mine in an hour...
How’d it go ?
@@daniellechenault3025 Failed :D

Good luck, study hard!
Best advice is to, get a good nights rest and eat breakfast.
Stop stressing over the test. Either you have it or not. Plain and simple.
@@DubiousYuTuber your result seems quite low, are you struggling a lot with the course?
@@karcavida3250 Getting a 100 or higher is very advanced for English first speakers and puts you in category IV the hardest one to achieve. An 85 is required just to pass and from research I've read almost 50% of test takers fail. So he received a very good score actually
Got a 130. I feel bad saying this but I didn't study at all
Cool. I think studying for it is a waste of time. Either you have it or you do not.
@Someone Random If you don't mind me asking, what's your background regarding language? Mono-lingual, bilingual... took classes in high school?
@@Kitkat915e I was born monolingual. I have never taken foreign language classes, I've just studied on my own. I basically taught myself undergrad-level linguistics with the internet throughout highschool (I took the test between HS graduation and freshman year of college). At the time of taking it, I was conversational in Spanish, German, and a bit of Mandarin. Additionally, I could/can understand multiple other languages to varying degrees. The vocabulary on the test was mostly made-up and independent of language family (some of the words had roughly Semitic syllable structure but different roots/morphology, I didn't recognize any). No specific language will really help you, but studying lots of varied ones from different families will.
This is going to sound really weird but I feel like part of my score was the fact that I really like conlangs. I've both made my own and have used them productively with other enthusiasts (like Esperanto, Toki Pona, Quenya, etc). The test itself basically requires you to have a good understanding of phonetics (like hear something and give a rough IPA without English bias), and to observe patterns among made-up words, break those words down, and put new words back together (so just morphology). There were points where I felt completely clueless and basically just pissing into the wind, but those were near the end of the test, and my score still turned out really good.
@@someonerandom704 Damn, that's really impressive to self study 3 languages to that level before college! And yeah, actually maybe conlangs are the best way to study for the DLAB, since it's based off what's kinda a conlang itself. Did you end up going into the DLI? I get the sense you would, considering your interest in languages. Wish there was a program or something available to regular civilians that provided classes similar in breadth and intensity to those in the DLI...
@@Kitkat915e Actually I decided to not go to DLI and stay a civilian. Currently studying CS because I'm also a prolific programmer. I was thinking of just working as an AF civilian because there are things that my DLAB score can potentially offer (like foreign study).
Don't forget to clean your ears!
I heard you cannot click on the answer right away anyways. You have to listen to the full audio before they allow you to select an answer.
