Buy the book guys. Just got a 140 all because I bought the book, read it, and practiced the questions with my friends. Princeton linguistics puzzles also helped to open my mind a bit.
I really doubt that book helped. Either you have the aptitude for languages or not. Trying to study for something you either have or do not have the ability to do is fruitless. You will be better off studying basic grammar.
@@tonysmith7702 yeah, I think there’s two parts to this. I scored a 99 AFQT, so I do have good test taking skills. But studying the DLAB book amongst other linguistic puzzles got my mind thinking more logically with regards to linguistics. I think it helps to train that part of your brain beforehand, so that style of thinking comes to you faster because the test is all about speed. I didn’t answer multiple questions due to time. I will say I would’ve have passed without the book, however I would not have scored as high.
@@arl09330 The book/pamphlet only got you familiarized with the test. I agree that it can get you more speed, but that is not going to help you, if you do not have the aptitude. You have the aptitude. Remember, all you need is a passing score. Anything above that is just a waste. When I went to DLI, we had a lot of people with high DLAB /AFQT scores and just passing DLAB/AFQT scores wash out and graduate. A passing DLAB score or a high DLAB score gets you to DLI. At DLI, the only score that counts is the DLPT. In reality, you only need a 89 on the DLAB for cat I languages. The military wants you to qualify for all languages, that is why you have to score a lot higher than 89 on the DLAB to become a linguist. Again, I truly believe you have always had the aptitude for languages. The test is designed to show that. I think you will do well at DLI. If you do not have good study habits, learn them. The first 6 mos at DLI were a nightmare for me. I was barely passing. I did not have good study habits. I studied at school and back in the dorms until I went to bed. Once I learned how to study, I studied about 6 hours a week and my grades went from low 70s to mid 90s and class became boring. After learning how to study. I only studied 30 mins Mon-Fri and 3-4 hours Sunday afternoons. Anyway enough of me rambling. Good luck with what ever you decide to do. It is a very exciting job.
I used that exact same book and it helped a lot I scored a 122 and as soon as my weight is good I’ll be going back to MEPS and finish my process of becoming an airman. That test was brutal though , I was only the second person who passed that my recruiter sent. Best of luck to anyone else taking it!
@@KezziahHarris It is on kindle now too. THE NEW DLAB STUDY GUIDE (2023) by Sam Newmann.. Prob otherplaces as well. This guide is very similar to the test lol
Thanks for the videos, I'll be taking my dlab soon and have chosen the same career path! It's so great to see people making military test prep videos who had similar asvab results. Good luck on your journey!
Taking this in a few days! Appreciate you sharing your experience! Few questions if you could help out, How tough were the stress syllables portion, and relative to the practice test in the book, are the visual sections just as hard or harder? Because I felt like the visual portion was made pretty tough for the practice test, especially the example with the worm lol.
I feel like the stressed syllables were only a bit difficult starting, just because it’s no way to practice exactly how the narrator says them but after going through a few you catch on...The visual section was harder than the book because on the test it’s like they combined more things together than in that manual if that makes sense. You’ll see exactly what I’m saying when you’re taking it. For me the easiest parts were the first three sentence sections, but I’m sure the difficulty is relative...Good luck on your test & I really hope you pass!!!
@@AlisaNicole Hey! just wanna say thanks for your help! I passed my test and I was inspired to make my own video on the experience!🙂 thanks for your tips and feedback..
When you take the audio portion, are you able to listen to the answers as many times as you need? Or is it limited to the first time you listen to them?

Do you need to know at least a little of the languages they teach in order to be able to work in this field? & would they choose a language for you or do you get to choose ?
U don’t need to know the language at all and no u don’t get to choose ur language. U do get a preference sheet tho but it’s not guaranteed that u’ll get ur first pick
You really don’t have time during the test to memorize the rules since it’s timed...You only have a little bit over a minute for each question. It’s best to remember & practice with them before you take it.
Okay I was trying to see how it worked I didn’t know if they only showed the rules for like 30 seconds and moved to the question part or if they let you look at it for awhile before proceeding
i've been delaying taking the test because i'm so scared of not learning the rules and understanding it 100%. i graduated in May and that was the last time i spoke to my recruiter. i bought the book back in June, but i'm just so nervous.
Just go take the test. Either you have the ability or not. If you fail and are very close to passing and not in a hurry to join the military, take the test again. More than likely you will score higher. Even if you fail, it is not the end of the world. It just means you are not meant to be a linguist at this point in time. If you really want to do the job, but do not pass the DLAB learn one of the languages the military needs on your own and take the DLPT for it later. In the Airforce, you can apply to be a linguist anytime at your first base. It is a special duty job also. So you can apply for it. Good luck
Studying does not help in my opinion. How can you study for something you either have the ability to do or do not. You will be better off refreshing on basic English grammar. Do the rules shows up for the section or part your working for?
