However I just don't like it stylistically and most of it leaves me cold, but again, the guy is a genius. This was an entertaining interview. YM is very charismatic, funny, smart, and thoughtful and avoids 'canned' answers. Great interview!!
The first 3 or 4 albums have some really well composed tunes and tasteful guitar playing. He used to really be able to dial it back from time to time, and have some very moving and melodic licks. That made the fast stuff even more mind bending. If you cherry-pick those albums you'll probably find some tunes worth your time. Cheers!
Yngwie's Rising Force albums (debut and trilogy to name a few), to quote school of rock, are face melting. I've seen YM in concert. He seems to put on airs, flicking guitar picks (that's an interesting story), but when you hear him play, you forget about that. EVH was pushing the envelope in what you can do with a guitar. Even Holmsworth - another musician that YM admired - can shread and can be intricate, whether it's rock or jazz.
Yngwie may seem full of himself... but he's really a great dude. a HUGE dude... but a great human being. I couldn't believe the size of his hands!! I'm a big guy with big hands... but Yngwie is Bear size! I can't use the excuse that my hands are too big to shred anymore.
There's a collection of famous guitar player handprints somewhere. I seem to recall Yngwie being remarkably non exceptional in the area of his hands but he had a lot more finger to palm than most. Seems like he's also put on some "finger bulk" here. That might be aging or maybe he's picked up a hobby where he works with his hands a lot. I'm a 6'7" dude with hands that scale but my 5'11" father has an identical hand size. If that wasn't enough unlike my skinny programmer fingers he's been doing carpentry and fixing up cars for 40 years so his hands are like absolute fucking paws. I once handed him my ibanez for a laugh and he couldn't finger individual strings, it simply wasn't possible with the shovels he has.
It was funny seeing the still photo of Rick and Yngwie standing next to each other - Rick looked like a hobbit or a 14 year old child in comparison! LOL And when they shake hands at the end of the video Yngwie's hand absolutely dwarfs Rick's
Hand size doesn't matter. Every Guitarist has to develop their own style that works for their finger and hand size. I have what I call, "spider fingers," so I am able to pull off amazing stretches that allow me to play chords that most Guitarists can't play, but the same chords can be played in different positions that don't require the stretch.
I remember exactly where I was when "Ain't talkin bout love" came on the speakers, I was a kid at the time. That LP just came out, never forgot that moment. It was just WOW what is that?
I saw Van Halen on their first tour at the Miami James l knight center. there was a band opening for them called the screams that weren't good at all. Van Halen was the headline they literally blew me away, I was 15 yrs old. running with the devil was like the baddest song and then I saw them twice at the tangerine bowl Tampa FL opening for the Rolling Stones a couple years after that , a two day show like maybe 1980 1981, 70,0000 people in that stadium both days packed. there were guys walking up the stairs in this outdoor stadium holding up sheets of 500 hits of acid I remember it was red Baron blotter it was just a wide open scene. Van Halen had speakers stacked up on both sides of the stage at least 30 ft high. excellent concert.
Did Yngwie ever talk like this when Eddie was alive? I remember a few small forced compliments but that's about it. He actually sounds sincere in this one.
When you have an ego issue like him (more of us do than care to admit let's be honest), it's very difficult to complement someone on film with the possibility of Van Halen himself hearing it. I'm sure part of this is Yngwie maturing as a person but I wonder if it's easier for him to admit this with VH gone. I reckon peak Yngwie would equate complementing another player to implying they are better than him in some way.
@@lukedavison961I saw Yngwie perform a few years ago at the _Generation Axe_ tour (with Tosin Abasi, Nuno Bettencourt, Zakk Wylde, and Steve Vai). It is not difficult at all to imagine Señor Malmsteen being insecure enough to avoid _ever_ complementing another player. He's an incredible dick.
Most hotshot guitar players look at others as competition, and it is sometimes hard for them to acknowledge that someone else is as good or maybe better, and came up with techniques that they never thought of.
@@mkay1957 It _generally_ comes with maturity as well. e.g. Paul Gilbert is a super sweet guy, humble and congenial--but as I understand I'm the 80s and early 90s, he was not.

Why should you? Yngwie doesn't ask for compliments, why should he give out any? Why shoudl anyone ASK for compliments? Or are they just expecting to get some? You don't understand Nordic mentality of not expecting, asking NOR giving any compliments unless someone personally deserves that by having direct effect on you on personal level by PHYSICALLY having an interaction with you. In american culture of small-talk and empty flattery, way we in the nordics interact and think isn't appreciated. Want compliments? He seems to put on airs, flicking guitar picks (that's an interesting story), but when you hear him play, you forget about that. EVH was pushing the envelope in what you can do with a guitar. Even Holmsworth - another musician that YM admired - can shread and can be intricate, whether it's rock or jazz.
"Was" a snob 🤣
he says "became" which implies he still is :)
He's lighten up a lot through the years
At least he recognizes it
He’s definitely leaned into it over the years as part of his brand as well.
When you can play like Yngwie you have every right to be a snob
No he became a Snobe
"Wingnut Valve-Stem" is hilarious 🤣🤣😂
Yngwie may seem full of himself... but he's really a great dude. a HUGE dude... but a great human being. I couldn't believe the size of his hands!! I'm a big guy with big hands... but Yngwie is Bear size! I can't use the excuse that my hands are too big to shred anymore.
🤣 I’ve heard the opposite excuse too
There's a collection of famous guitar player handprints somewhere.
@@lukedavison961 He gave it up, didn't pick it up. Carpentry is one of his few non guitar skills.
Time has been very good to Yngwie. Seems very personable.
I would like to see Rick interview Vinnie Moore🤘, come on Rick, Add too your list!
Why is Vinnie Moore surrounded by parenthesis?
@@sergiomartinez5946 Thank you, typos was the meaning, Ha!
They rock..simply rock
YJM...The Godfather of shred.
No question
Omg I can’t believe you/ I identify him as the ‘godfather of shred, lol man I’m getting old ,only seems like yesterday!! Lol
One of the greatest debut albums ever!
This just gave me chills
I remember exactly where I was when "Ain't talkin bout love" came on the speakers, I was a kid at the time. That LP just came out, never forgot that moment. It was just WOW what is that?
"I loved Van Halen!!! No, not the guitar player, I loved the live recording"
he actually says "the amazing guitar playing"
And he said "that REALLY knocked me out"
@@peejay6930 yup. He obviously likes the guitar playing as he names out Eruption
@@lovesgibson Yeah, he's basically saying the great guitar playing is a given, But he had never heard music recorded that way
@@peejay6930he actually says "it wasn't the amazing guitar playing"
I was 15 when VanHalen released their first album. Been a fan ever since
He even dyes his eyebrows 😂
Who cares?….
Full commitment
Gay community really cares about these cosmetics , guitarists not so much .
@@humanactivated1017Guitarist can’t be gay?
You would too if you were Yngwie Malmsteen
So why the fk did he not want to meet Eddie when they were staying at the same hotel and Eddie knocked on his door?
ego
Because he's Fn YNGWIE J. MALMSTEEN that's why! Maybe Eddie had Donuts for him?
@@chadr1003more like Eddie didn't have donuts.
@@chadr1003 Well, he does (apparently) hate donuts ...
OMG, donuts. That's so original.
Aging men and their music never gets old…..wait I mean never gets boring.
Yngwie will always be one of my all time favorites, amazing guitarist and man ..
And fucking hell, the ferraris 🤤
It’s sooo weird!
With Steve Vai it’s vice versa: The Dude compliments numerous guitarists for decades now!
Oh, Yngwie, why?
still love yngwie.he can say anything but his actions always speak louder than words
Yngwie is the mannen!
I had the same feeling when I first heard Van Halen 1 , it blew me away and now I’m the snob who only listens to Van Halen! ❤
Yngwe Malmsteen a snob!? Surely he jests! /s
Yngwie studied and played piano and transposed guitar from piano amazing you rock bro your shows are epic just heard faultline on radio great tune on the radio🙏🤘
Bit of a snob?
Van Halen is an explosion of music such an incredible band its too bad there’s not newer bands trying to tap into that energy
Yngwie , for whom 1/32s are too bloody slow
No matter what guitar on his hand , all great looking...!!!!
Random question… But does this dude like donuts?
No, he 'fucking hates donuts'.
@@pillsareyummy hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!! Yes!!!
All hail Yngwie master shredder
Yngwie always goes out of his way not to compliment any guitar player from his generation. Nothing new here.
Do something amazing and do it PERSONALLY and you'll get it... when you're 1:1 with the person they'll tell you, but ONLY you.
@@oscarleijontoft Yngwie is a beast but that’s not what I was talking about.
@@oscarleijontoft But that's not because they can't, it's just that they don't want to
@@Mtaalas Eddie didn’t ask for compliments, he just got them because he changed the way guitar was played, as did Yngwie. You apparently missed my point.

Rick, Van Halen, and YM are all legends.
I think eruption has a lot of influence, but I also think it is the worst thing on that album.
It was all teds idea to put it in there and its not even a good representation of who ed was as a player
Ridiculous
