    One thing I forgot to mention in the video, when hand pollinating your watermelon flowers, it's best to do it early in the morning shortly after the flowers open up for the day!

    Kia ora from New Zealand Christa. I'm so glad I found your channel - which was by accident when I was searching how to save pansy seeds and got a link to your channel. You have so much good information on your channel and I am particularly interested in the watermelon videos as I plan to grow them for the first time this year. We love watermelon but it is so expensive to buy here in NZ. Interesting to see that I will 'help' them along with fertilizing - exactly what I did with my pumpkins and squash this year - and I had a bumper harvest recently. Looking forward to viewing more of your great videos. Thanks and take care.

    Wow they are healthy watermelon plants. I'm a 1st timer watermelon grower. My plants just started to have small watermelon fruits after I hand pollinated them. Hopefully the fruits will grow bigger hence the vines are only growing in medium size watermelon 🍉.

    Good to know about the Royal Golden watermelon. Tried to grow it last year but the whole plant stayed yellow. My seeds for Royal Golden sprouted a few days ago, and once again, the seedlings are yellow. I plan to pay more attention to try to grow it better. Just really debating between letting it crawl on the ground or try to trellis. What would you suggest? Also trying Sugar Baby this year.

    I believe I know why I haven't gotten a watermelon yet now. For some reason, I can have blooms in the morning and in the afternoon they have closed or even wilted. I seen yesterday something different and from the this video, it's a female bloom with the fruit under it. Hopefully it will make it. Thanks for the video.

    This has been the most helpful video that I have seen on RUclips regarding watermelons. You mentioned several varieties. Do you have a source for which you go to to buy your non GMO seed I've been trying to look for the Alibaba seed and though there's a lot to choose from I was curious of a source that you might refer to. Thank you so much. By the way I am a first-time Gardener. Because of limited space I am planting tomatoes and watermelon variety called ice chest in a raised garden bed called a city picker plus I also had a raised bed made for me where I have tomatoes and a small sugar baby watermelon. Thank you for the great tips.

    • @ChristasGarden

      A lot of my watermelon seeds are from Baker Creek but I have also purchased seeds from many other seed companies and had no issues. The Ali Baba seeds are from Baker Creek. Seeds sold by seed companies in little packets that cater to home gardeners are never gmo. I don't know why so many companies feel the need to label their seeds gmo free, maybe because people ask all the time or maybe because it's a marketing thing. Gmo seeds are sold to famers in large quantities, mostly things like corn and soybeans. Oh yeah, I have seen those city picker planters, they look pretty cool! Good luck. I have plenty more videos on watermelon growing if you want to check them out. There are several playlists over on my page. Thanks for watching and for the nice comment, I am glad it was helpful to you! Good luck with your garden and even if you fail at a few things don't let it discourage you, consider it a learning experience and try again.

      @@ChristasGarden thank you very much for responding. I thought GMO meant that I could use the seed from my crop to re-seed for the next season? Also I have been following you from when you first planted those watermelons in those containers. I will keep watching to see the progress. I also noticed that you cut off the rest of the growing vine just after the fruit. I had read that is was helpful in getting a larger fruit. And then I saw it on your video. Anyway thank you so much if there's an ability for me to show you a picture I will attach a picture of a melon that I'm growing in a container I'm just so proud because I have one Haogen melon already. :-)

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 года назад

      @@Synwright, I never cut my vines! With fungal diseases slowly killing the leaves on my watermelon vines, I do not help it along. Once the leaves are gone, the plant is dead. You must have seen that on somebody elses video, I can't do it to my plants. Also, it sounds like you confused hybrids with gmo. Awesome! Glad your melon growing is working out so far. Good luck.

    • @Synwright

      @@ChristasGarden thank you for getting back. I re-watched your video and clearly I did not see that on your video and I must have had it confused with another video. Thank you for straightening that out for me. I will go and research hybrid vs. GMO cuz I believe I must be confused please understand I'm new at this and watching a lot of videos and so it's easy to get things confused I'm so glad you straightened it out for me. :-)

    I have been told by some large watermelon growers that you need to wait 4 years to grow watermelons in the same spot again (field grown) , this will greatly cut down on the repetitive disease cycle .

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  2 года назад

      That may be true with a large scale farming operation but it's not always possible for us back yard gardeners. This year and last year I moved my tomatoes, they were starting to look rough after growing them in the same spot for 20 years, lol. My in ground watermelons are in a new spot last year and this year after 5 years in the same location. Disease was starting to show up a little earlier in the season, although they weren't doing bad and they were still giving me a nice harvest in that location. Rotation is not a bad idea if you have the space for it.

      Have you grown this variety? My plant seemed finicky and stunted the whole season. I was able to get a harvest though. Everything I have read, from several sources, says the vines are long. The fruit is small, in the 3 pound range. The only watermelon variety I have ever grown that is supposed to have short vines is the bush version of Sugar Baby.
