    I used an old shirt once and tied it on the trellis. It looked by the baby carrying stork. I also used a wide mesh net tied up the same way. Also for newer folks, watermelons and others like it will move resources to the stem area to thicken it up in order to hold itself up.

      @ChristasGarden  4 года назад +1

      Yeah I have heard that too but I am not going to risk it. Even if the watermelon doesn't snap away from the vine prematurely because of a thickened stem, the watermelon could fall because of the weight or even wind, pulling the vine down with it, maybe split the watermelon open , especially if the vine isn't anchored to the trellis very well. My plants are only growing on a tomato cage.

    For some reason it was so hard to find a video about this! This would be a common problem for heavy veggies on a trellis so idk why it was so hard to find a video about it! THANK YOU!

    Have you ever added diluted hydrogen peroxide to the soil in your containers?
    I just read the abstract of a study published inJournal of Plant Physiology October 2008 that proved adding H2O2 to the soil increased sugar production and overall sweetness of the melon significantly.
    I initially Googled H2O2 + watermelon to see what concentration is safe to apply to leaves as an anti-fungal, and this grabbed my attention!
    Thank you for your advice and know-how!

    I planted seeds indoors on April 28th, in large coir cups (pint sized I think...
    It is August third and I am just seeing female flowers for the first time. The vines grow up to a foot per day, SOME days, about 4 or 5 feet long now.
    I tried to q tip pollinate but it is evening and no pollen came off I could see BUT I tried just in case. The flowers are closing tonight so will try again in the morning thanks to your video.
    I am new, and considering bringing them indoors for winter if I can haul their huge pots (New pots about 2 feet deep and near two feet across at top).
    I guess melons do not like coir... Or is it ok they are not very big vines YET?
    I give an inch of water a day usually, sometimes it rains. Full sun (12 14 hours) with just a couple hours of shade.

    Pantyhose will work. There's a dude in Hilton Head who makes a trellis out of bamboo, gets the watermelon growing up it, and supports it with Pantyhose.

    After your watermelons reach their final size, do you stop watering? Ive read you're supposed to let them dry out in order to get sweet. I have a few watermelons right now that had a brown tendril since last week. I know in your previous videos you've said to wait at least a week before picking(especially yellow moon & stars). Last year I picked all my melons once the tendril dried up, and they weren't very sweet. Hoping this last week + no water will work.

      I have heard that as well but it just so happens that I usually get a bunch of rain around harvest time. My watermelons are always sweet.

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 года назад

      I don't do it very often, the key is to make sure you are using enough pollen. Try to get pollen from several flowers.

    How do you keep bugs from eating your watermelons?

    • @ChristasGarden
      @ChristasGarden  4 года назад

      The plants or the fruit? I never had problems with bugs eating the fruit until yesterday, I found a green caterpillar eating on a watermelon rind. It really only damaged the outermost part of the rind, I think it will scar and continue to grow. Bugs do eat on the leaves of the plants but I don't worry about it too much because the damage isn't severe. They aren't defoliating entire plants or anything like that but if it did become an issue, I would spray. If I see something, I pick it off and squish it. This year, I am seeing stink bugs, squash beetles, and cucumber beetles on them. Are you having problems with bugs and if so which bugs?
