Kim, I'll be very interested to see how you cradle the melons when they start to get heavy. Also, it's good to know that the soil to grow these melons in doesn't have to be very deep. You have definitely motivated me to try this! 😃 thank you! It makes sense to be proactive but one question I have as a newbie, is if the organic pesticide is going to kill the beneficial microorganisms in the soil and worm casting tea?
No, it kills the chewing and sucking on leaves. I suggest you spray in the morning/evening to protect the pollinators and don't spray the flowers directly. Thanks for commenting. CaliKim

Thank you for makings this video i have 7 transplants i grew from seeds ready to go in my beds. I have Alaska Fish Fertilizer and Vitality...How much of each should i use per gallon to make the "cocktail"?
You are welcome, Adam. For your “cocktail,” here’s a good mix using Alaska Fish Fertilizer and Vitality: 1. Alaska Fish Fertilizer: Use about 2 tablespoons per gallon of water. This will provide a nice boost of nitrogen to help your transplants get established. 2. Vitality: Use the recommended dosage on the label, which is typically around 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. Vitality is great for overall plant health and will complement the fish fertilizer. Mix these together in your watering can, and give each transplant a good drink after planting. This combo will give them a strong start! LMK! CaliKim
@CaliKim29 Thank you for the information...I'm going to give it a shot...now if you have a good mix for getting rid of green w/2 white stripe caterpillars, I'd be golden
Mine sprouted in 3 days! I soaked them overnight, planted them in a large container pot, they sprouted so fast I couldn't believe it! They already have their first true leaves now. I did read that each vine will only produce about two watermelons. I'm wondering if you've grown them before, and find that to be true?
Hello my Sugar baby’s are starting to sprout. How often should I fertilize them? When I sowed the seeds I used Blood, Bone, and fish fertilizer. Do I continue to use just the fish fertilizer now that they have sprouted?
Hi! That’s great to hear your Sugar Baby melons are sprouting! For fertilizing, you can continue using the fish fertilizer now that they’ve sprouted. Typically, fertilize every 2-3 weeks. As they grow, you might also consider adding a balanced fertilizer to support their development. Keep it up! CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 thank you so much. I have watched your sugar baby watermelon video several times to ensure I was doing everything correctly. Thanks again. I really appreciate it.
Love your videos! Newbie question - if you have two watermelon plants growing in one cell. Do you transplant it as is and let two watermelon plants grow? Or are you supposed to only let one of the plants grow?
Hi Kara, good question. It's generally recommended to allow only one plant to grow in each location. Leaving two in can lead to overcrowding, competition for resources: sunlight, water, and nutrients. Generally what I do if there are 2 growing in one cell is let them grow, transplant into the garden and thin to the strongest seedling (trim the smaller one at the base) as they grow. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and commenting (subscribing?) ! CaliKim
Hi I do I need to prune sugar babies even of they grow up on a trellis? Great videos too. I live in Alberta Canada so we havew a very short growing season, I planted watermelon in our greenhouse I have never growin these before so all new to me. If anyone has any tips I should know it would be greatly aprreciated. Thank you in advance:)
Hi Michelle- this sounds interesting!!!! Do keep us posted! Yes, you should prune Sugar Baby watermelons even if they grow on a trellis. Trim excess vines to focus the plant's energy on fewer fruits for better growth and sweeter melons. Can't wait to hear about this progress! How fun....CK
So should the neem spray be sprayed as soon as I plant? I’m planting a sugar baby watermelon plant from Home Depot? All of my fruits and veggies are plants.
Applying neem spray to your newly transplanted Sugar Baby watermelon plants can be a proactive measure to protect them from pests and diseases. It's generally a good idea to wait a few days after transplanting before applying neem oil. This allows the plants to settle into their new environment and reduces the risk of additional stress. If you notice any pests or signs of disease during this period, you can apply neem oil sooner. I hope this helps ! Please thumbs up the video and subscribe if you have not already (I can't always tell who has subscribed)! Where are you and what are you growing? CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 I am in Dallas (Rowlett) Texas. I am growing cucumbers, roma tomatoes, jalapeños, and the sugar baby watermelon. I already have parsley and cilantro planted from last year. YAY!

How are yours growing? I don’t know if it’s the lack of fertilizer in the ground or all the cold cloudy🌥️days we’ve been getting but mine are taking forever to grow. I’ve got some Small Sugar pumpkins🎃 planted next to them which are having no problems and got big almost overnight when I added fertilizer to the patch.
Sorry to hear that - it must vary by location as our local Home Depot has it. I recommend searching homedepot.com to see if theres a location near you that has it. Keep us posted !
Hi great stuff love it except if it was organic you wouldn't be spraying chemicals on it just wanted to tell you this as I am more in line with using companion plants then chemicals myself
I have noticed that when you plant starters that they sometimes have two babies, do you at some point cut the weaker plant away or do you leave them both? ❤ your videos.
Hi Shirley, I happen to be on when your comment came in! Great question. You have 3 choices: Thinning: Thinning involves removing the weaker or less vigorous seedling, leaving behind the strongest one to grow. Transplanting: If you prefer not to discard any seedlings, you can carefully separate them and transplant each one into its own container or garden spot. Leaving Both: Keeping in mind that they will compete for space, nutrients, and sunlight, which can affect their growth and overall health. There are no guarantees on which one/both will survive. Thank you for watching and commenting. Please subscribe if you have not already! CaliKim
@@CaliKim29 thank you. It literally is damned if you do and damned if you don’t. lol. I never know what to do. I hate to damage the roots when trying to separate. I sometimes just cut the weaker one off at the soil.
I get it and sure can be frustrating, can't it. Apply the above steps and keep a close on them and let's how it goes. It's frustrating if it dies, but don't beat youself on this! We'll get up and keep moving forward. CK we got you!

I am growing sugar babies for the first time this year and am doing in a 3 foot raised bed as you have here. However, I am unable to figure out 1) does your 3-ft smart pot have 3 compartments, or do I need to cut the compartments out? and 2) it looks like you have some kind of black grate on top of your soil - do I need that, and what did you use? TYSM for your help. I am very excited to try this out!
Hi Michelle - you'll LOVE growing your own sugar babies - they are so easy to grow a super sweet! Little Shorty is the handiest little raised bed! It have 3 dividers for stability. No need to cut them out - just plant something in each section - they don't get in the way at all. Make sure to check out our new watermelon video we just uploaded today for more tips! The black grate might be my drip irrigation - highly recommended and super helpful for consistent watering, but not absolutely necessary, as long as you can water by hand consistently. Keep me posted!
For Sugar Baby watermelons, here are a few tips to tell when they’re ready to harvest: 1. Look at the color: The skin should turn a deep green or dull greenish-white when ripe. 2. Check the tendril: The curly tendril near the stem of the melon will dry up and turn brown when it’s ripe. 3. Tap test: Tap the melon gently; a ripe one will have a deep, hollow sound. 4. Size and shape: Sugar Baby watermelons are small (around 8-10 pounds) and round when mature. Give these a try and enjoy your sweet harvest! 🍉😊 Please be sure and subscribe and like the videos that you watch!!! Much appreciated - CK
I’d love to grow them, but I got some aggressive squirrels! I didn’t net them last year, so I’m trying again this year. Man…I have to net (I use tulle) which is fine, but they will get into everything
This my second year for sugar babies. The only way I can the seeds to geminat is with wet paper towel in a plastic bag. When I plant seed directly in planting soil they never grow.
Great info on watermelon! So happy you posted this today. I want watermelon but just dont have more room. I never thought of using a spoon to get out my start! Are you planting inground at all this year on your levels?
My sugar baby watermelon plants have HUGE watermelons on them - every bit as large as a basketball, if not larger. However, none of them have tendrils that are drying up. They are as green as ever. I started these plants indoors around February, so they were nice sized plants by the time I transplanted them in May. Here it is September and not one ripe melon yet. 😩 What am I doing wrong? Thank you.
It sounds like your Sugar Baby watermelons are taking their time ripening, which can be frustrating. Here are a few things to consider: Extended Growing Season: Since you started your plants indoors in February and transplanted them in May, they’ve had a long growing season. Sometimes, plants with an extended season might take longer to ripen because they’ve been growing steadily for so long. Weather: Watermelons need consistent warm temperatures, especially during the ripening phase. If your area has experienced cooler-than-usual weather, it might delay ripening. Size Mismatch: Sugar Baby watermelons are typically smaller (around 8-10 inches in diameter). If yours are as large as a basketball, it’s possible that they’re overgrown but not yet ripe, which can sometimes happen with extended growing periods or if the plants receive excess nutrients, particularly nitrogen. Tendril Drying: The drying of the tendril closest to the fruit is a common indicator of ripeness. If your tendrils are still green, the melons might need more time. However, this isn’t a foolproof method, especially with unusually large fruits. Sound Test: Thump the watermelon. A ripe one should sound hollow. Ground Spot: Check the spot where the melon touches the ground. It should turn from white to a creamy yellow as the fruit ripens. Sugar Content: Sometimes, a refractometer (if you have one) can help measure the sugar content to gauge ripeness. Patience: Continue to monitor the melons for any changes in the tendrils or ground spot color. They might just need a little more time. Adjust Fertilization: If you’re still fertilizing, consider reducing nitrogen and focusing on phosphorus and potassium to encourage ripening. It sounds like your watermelons are getting close, but they just need a bit more time to reach peak ripeness. Hang in there! I hope this helps! CK
@@CaliKim29 Thank you! We have about another month and a half before our first frost, so hopefully we’ll get at least one ripe one before then. I’ll continue to watch them. Fingers crossed!
It can be frustrating when your sugar baby watermelons seem to stall in growth. Here are a few tips that might help: Pollination: Watermelons require good pollination to develop properly. You can encourage pollination by attracting bees and other pollinators to your garden with flowers or by gently shaking the vines to distribute pollen. Watering: Watermelons need consistent moisture, especially during fruit development. Ensure they're getting about 1-2 inches of water per week, particularly during dry spells. Fertilization: Use a balanced fertilizer or one formulated for fruits and vegetables to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and fruit development. Pruning: Sometimes, pruning excessive foliage can redirect energy into fruit production. Focus on pruning away any non-essential vines or leaves. Temperature: Watermelons thrive in warm temperatures. Ensure they're getting plenty of sun, as cooler temperatures can slow down growth. Patience: Watermelons can take 70-90 days to mature depending on the variety. Sometimes they just need a bit more time to reach their full size. Hang in there and continue caring for your plants with these tips. Hopefully, you'll soon see those sugar baby watermelons growing and ripening beautifully! CK

Using powdered milk and water as a fertilizer or foliar spray for plants, including sugar baby watermelons, can be beneficial due to its nutrient content. Powdered milk contains calcium, proteins, and other nutrients that can support plant health. Some tips - Avoid Overuse: While milk can be beneficial, too much can create an environment conducive to mold and bacteria. Use it sparingly and in conjunction with other fertilizers and soil amendments. Observe your plants for any adverse reactions, such as leaf burn or mold growth, and adjust the concentration or frequency of application accordingly. Use milk as a supplement to a balanced fertilizer regimen. Milk provides calcium but may not supply all the nutrients your watermelons need. CaliKim
Pinch off any suckers to keep aphid points down and let it keep only one fruit per plant for best results. Aphids can wipe out a vine in a day, I dont even bother with watermelon anymore its too bothersome for me.
@@CaliKim29 as soon as I finished your video I went out and replanted the starters by the trellis! Had to use another raised bed and put some in bags but I feel so much better! Cali girl here too! Thanks for the info!

Thank you for makings this video i have 7 transplants i grew from seeds ready to go in my beds. I have Alaska Fish Fertilizer and Vitality...How much of each should i use per gallon to make the "cocktail"?
You are welcome, Adam. For your “cocktail,” here’s a good mix using Alaska Fish Fertilizer and Vitality:
I planted mine a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully I get at least one.
I totally get it, Irene! Keep me posted!! Hope all is well - Kim
That is soooo cool🍉🍉🍉😋😋😋
Great idea!!!
Glad you think so! Thank you for watching! Where are you gardening from ? CK
YAY!
My goodness, great work out there!! CK
I thank you For this vidéo i'm very interest by small treilli métal but i had look for buy and i dont find, i would like to know how i can find it ?????
How do you keep the pests away?
What is the name of that trellis you used for sugar baby watermelons
Ladder Mesh trellis. Put two side by side and zip tie them! CK
Bummer.. Home Depot says the no longer carry the ladder mesh.. Cannot find any other local sources either. Love the idea. Thanks
Sorry to hear that - it must vary by location as our local Home Depot has it. I recommend searching homedepot.com to see if theres a location near you that has it. Keep us posted !
How much Vitality and fish fertilizer should we add to the watering can?
Hi great stuff love it except if it was organic you wouldn't be spraying chemicals on it just wanted to tell you this as I am more in line with using companion plants then chemicals myself
Hi, what natural ingredients do you suggest. Thank you kindly 😊
I have noticed that when you plant starters that they sometimes have two babies, do you at some point cut the weaker plant away or do you leave them both? ❤ your videos.
Hi Shirley, I happen to be on when your comment came in! Great question. You have 3 choices:
Thinning: Thinning involves removing the weaker or less vigorous seedling, leaving behind the strongest one to grow.
Im growing country sweet water melons and rockmelons aswell i also grow kent pumpkins i will be growing sugar baby watermelons and the star and moon watermelon and golden skin watermelon and golden rockmelon also known as golden honeydew
Hi Aussie! Yumm, that sounds so good right now!!!! Please, keep us posted okay? If you are on the gram, would love to see a photo! @calikim29
Thank you for sharing!
Anyone else’s Home Depot/Lowe’s not have ladder mesh?
Any other alternatives or places that do have it?
Wish I could dind the masonary ladder block... link says sold out. Not available anywhere... No menards near me.
Sorry to hear this! CK
Hey Cali Kim. Will you need to harness them? Thanks!
I have sugar baby watermelon growing but I am not sure how to tell when they are ready. Tips?
For Sugar Baby watermelons, here are a few tips to tell when they’re ready to harvest:
Please be sure and subscribe and like the videos that you watch!!! Much appreciated - CK
I’d love to grow them, but I got some aggressive squirrels! I didn’t net them last year, so I’m trying again this year. Man…I have to net (I use tulle) which is fine, but they will get into everything
Yep, squirrels are relentless....the battle is real.
Will Neem oil kill good bugs, too?
How do you support the watermelons if they are hanging. Will the weight make them fall?
Hi Vivian, great question - they definitely need support! Lots of ideas here: bit.ly/CaliKimWatermelonTrellisPlaylist. Have fun!
I LOVE WATERMELON 🍉 THANKS FOR SHARING HOW GROW WATERMELON 🍉 #NOT A DAY WITHOUT JESUS 🙏
Watermelon is so gooood!!! CK
I’m starting these this yr. Zone 6a. Can you plant anything in the middle of that bed, or the growth will choke it out??😊
This my second year for sugar babies.
Glad it was helpful! As of right now, no. Not planning on it. Who knows...that could always change, right? You know us, gardeners!!! HA
Does that spray kill the good bugs?
My sugar baby watermelon plants have HUGE watermelons on them - every bit as large as a basketball, if not larger. However, none of them have tendrils that are drying up. They are as green as ever. I started these plants indoors around February, so they were nice sized plants by the time I transplanted them in May. Here it is September and not one ripe melon yet. 😩 What am I doing wrong? Thank you.
It sounds like your Sugar Baby watermelons are taking their time ripening, which can be frustrating. Here are a few things to consider:
Extended Growing Season: Since you started your plants indoors in February and transplanted them in May, they’ve had a long growing season.
Can you have watermelon plant in direct sunlight.? Cause I know some plant can't be in the sun all the time.
Yes you can, that's how it'll grow the best!
mine seem to have stopped growing ..if they are growing its painfully slow and i only got one per plant to grow
It can be frustrating when your sugar baby watermelons seem to stall in growth. Here are a few tips that might help:
Pollination: Watermelons require good pollination to develop properly.
CK
@@CaliKim29 thanks im thinking pollination ...i had some bumble bee's but no more now just some butterflies ...but im growing some crimsom melons and im just starting to hand pollinate them and the flowers and vines are growing like mad ...I have eaten the sugar babies but they have a ton of seeds in them ...im going to replant them and try self pollination this time
How to prune them?
How many fruits you allow to grow per plant?
However many it produces! Go with it!
Is that trellis able to hold the weight of 4 sugar baby plants?
Yes. It did great! Thanks -
I bought the seeds from you unfortunately they did too well they all sprouted😂! I have 4 growing in a 4 inch container. That neem max does it work on already established plants and soil or is it best to use at planting?
Is that bed 3x1x1?
No, it is 3' long, 18" deep, 1 foot wide and can hold 45 gallons of soil. CK

WHAT ABOUT ...POWERED..MILK..& WATER?
Ugh, Aphids..... I get it!
