- The Ring Video Doorbell Wired is the most affordable Ring doorbell yet, but you need to know how the company brought the price down. Watch my full review before you decide if it's the right model for your home!
2.4GHz WiFi signals travel further than 5GHz.
That’s what I was thinking, and for a doorbell 2.4 is more than enough
This is the second home in which ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).
Is there an option for using my "Mechanical" existing doorbell chime with this product? Someone mentioned there was an option in the manual?
The retro fit kit and the corner wedge is now being sold for $9.99 each on Amazon. As far as not working with the mechanical chime...it doesn't really bother me. I have an Alexa dot in each room, so we actually hear that before we actually heard the chime when someone pressed the old 2nd Gen Ring Doorbell.
Great to know the price is coming down Michele! Thanks for the comment!
I’m in the UK and the smart reply and leave a message options work perfectly.
I bought the cheap one to start, I had it all installed and everything, but when I went to ring it it would only ring on the doorbell and not inside, I was on youtube for 1 month after that trying to figure it out. I just bought the pro and now it works with the chime already in my house, I pay 180 for the pro but it got me that extra. But the fact of the matter is I wasted more time trying to figure out any problems than to just buy the higher end ones. DONT CHEAP OUT, YOU WASTE MORE TIME THAN YOU SAVE. Also thanks for this informative video.
Can I use my existing mechanical door chime with my wired Ring if I don't use the jumper?
My ring doorbell wired only cost me $60 and it hooked to my echo dot for the chime
Yes, $60 USD and $80 CDN, but there are deals out there! Thank you for mentioning you can use your Echo Dot instead of the Chime kit!
Ikr? Plus if you wanna angle your camera vertically you add some washers behind the bolts. Or horizontal you add a wooden wedge or painters stick and just paint it before mounting
Thanks for the video. One thing though, other reviews have shown the pre roll feature in their reviews, so I'm pretty sure it's in there.
So there is no way to make your homes chime work with this model?
The 2.4ghz signal goes further than the 5ghz signal. The difference is in speed. So for a larger house, 2.4ghz is far more suitable. 5ghz on the other hand can transmit faster speeds.
I was thinking the same thing when he said that...
After a software updates, "Quick reply" works on this model.
My wires to my house are too short. What do you recommend I do?
Can this version be used for apartments?? I don’t have an existing wiring setup
angle mount is really not necessary due to the wide angle. Mine is at a 90 degree angle to my door, but its so wide it gets the outer screen entry door 12 feet away! Very happy I didnt spend extra.
Thank you for this. 90 degree here too, and was wondering how that would work on my house.
Has this changed? I thought the US models comes with jumper cables to allow it to work with existing doorbell chimes?
The jumper wire essentially disables your original doorbell. The jumper in essence uses that extra voltage/power to make certain the Ring doorbell has enough power/voltage to keep from dropping out the Ring. Wired existing doorbells have a transformer that knocks your 120 volts down to 12, 16, 18, or 24 volts. (good luck finding that transformer) To cover all the bases the Ring bell can operate from 12v to 24 volts. The jumper wire precludes power that may be needed to make old doorbell go ding dong.
Big fan of your work. We are lucky to have you on this platform. Your views will explode in no time. Keep up the good work!
How do ring chime work
The Minnesota winter killed the battery in my ring doorbell. An option without a battery is absolutely necessary. To me this is totally worth it.
solutions: move your router closer to front door, cut a piece of wood for the angle mount, use an old alexa or google home device for the chime
$45 with echo dot. Angle plate $10. That's a total of$55 and it's awesome
@DEAROTNUF it was black Friday deal and before inflation
I just got one love it does everything I could ever need don’t need any adapters or angle kits works with my WiFi and iPhone in the Uk my iPhone rings and the Alexa also a no chime needed in our Uk home
I want to use my existing shime do you know what doorbell would work?
Not exactly: You don't have to buy a Ring chime if you already have Echo devices, as they can double as door chimes. They also let you talk to the person at the door. Additionally, if you have an Echo with a screen, it lets you see the person at the door.
True! IF you own other Echo devices you are set! Thanks for the comment!
You do not need a chime or an echo device, the notifications I receive on my iPhone and iPad are more than sufficient and pretty instantaneous.
Well I don’t want a massive box that has to be recharged attached to my doorframe, I want a discrete button, and a camera. The wired model is perfect for that!
Did you make new holes for the angle kit and where did you get it?
Question what is the point of hooking up the wire to your existing doorbell chime if it wont make a noise when the ring doorbell is pressed? Sorry new to the ring cameras.
It doesn’t work properly if you don’t use the jumper. Weird, I know. I’m not an electrician but I believe it has to do with how much power is sent to your doorbell.
@@MikeYawneyGadgetGuy Appreciate the response man. Nice informative video.
I was wondering this too. My guess is that it converts the button wire into the power cable. I plan on getting rid of my chime completely and just using the old transformer to power the ring directly, but I guess some people might want to eventually revert back to the normal bell or find rewiring too challenging.
Is the lower price because of the revenue they're bringing in through police forces? Seriously, as the EFF points out, it's a bad idea to go anywhere near Ring.
I have a question,I have this and the echo show, which adapter do I purchase to go with this one?im switching my adt doorbell out and it’s set up with the plug in the wall adapter so I wanna stay using a plug in adapter
I’m doing the exact same thing did you end up finding which one is compatible?
2.4ghz wifi is better range than 5ghz. and the ring only uses a little bit of bandwidth so 2.4ghz is the best option for ring anyway.
You can also use a tablet or an older phone you are not using anymore as a chime. As long as you can install the app on it. Which, funnily enough doesn't include an Amazon Fire tablet, unless you have tweaked it a bit. :-)
Will this work with existing wired chime?
You need a house? Add $500,000.....These are extras, they're not needed by everyone.
Weaker 2.4GHz? Its only "weaker" component is the entire band carries less data overall than 5GHz, but being a lower frequency allows it to have far better range than 5GHz. That's why most cameras are 2.4GHz, not 5GHz due to the needed range for wider coverage around a home.
Hi Mike, can I ask you something about this doorbell cam.... how long will it record an event for? I mean, if you set it in the app to record for 90 seconds, does it really, or will it stop recording 5 seconds after it no longer senses the motion? Could you trigger yours to start recording, then leave the field of view and test if it continues to record or if cuts recording?
Hi Dave. I went through my last week of recordings and the camera continues to record for an average of 5 seconds after motion stops. It will not continue to record the if no motion is detected (despite your pre-set)
@@MikeYawneyGadgetGuy
Ah, so it does do that, how annoying. I wonder why; it's a wired device and doesn't need to conserve battery.
Thank you!
Ours record for 11 seconds, remember you can activate snapshots which takes pictures every 30 seconds
@@MikeYawneyGadgetGuy it can record up to 3 minutes and we have smart response now
What if you dont have any doorbell at your home period????
Then you would use the chime kit or an Amazon Alexa device (or even your smartphone) so you can hear when someone approaches the door
The camera quality is not the same. Although the resolution might be similar, the frame rate is significantly different. The ring wired is only 15fps while the rest are 20 or 24 fps.
Could you please share the link or model of the angle mount that you used? Can we use angle mount made for ring 1, ring 2 or ring pro? I found only 1 angle mount specified as for ring wired, but it has ony 25 degree angle. I am looking for mount with 55 degree.
Does it support memory card?
I have an old mechanical doorbell. Will I need to upgrade my transformer?
It will not work with your existing doorbell chime (mechanical or digital). You will need either a chime kit or Alexa smart speaker like an echo dot 4 to physically hear the chime. Otherwise the notification will only be on your smartphone
3D printed wedge , router is near my front door and using the dot as chime :)
(also 40 usd on prime days when ordering through echo device)
This was such a nitpick of a review!!
- the Alexa greetings is useless, most people won’t use it.
- the lack of chime especially when most homes have an older ding-dong sound can be replaced with a echo dot or show
- custom faceplates to match your wall? 🤦🏻♂️
- trickier installation? 🤦🏻♂️
Trust me, I have a 3500 Sq ft home and a regular mesh wifi and it works fine
Nice presentation. Looking into Ring doorbells brought me to you. Great content! :)
I don't get why Ring doesn't release an even narrower model - many homes have very small frames where the doorbell is mounted. Also, 2.4ghz typically has better range than 5ghz wifi, so using the slower 2.4ghz wifi isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Nice review but you lost all credibility when you wired the loop to the device counter clockwise at 1:17, I learned that was wrong when I was in middle school.
Haha I saw that too!
stop adding up silly costs,,,
a sliver of wood or washers will move the view
use an ECHO DOT,, or SHOW as a chime
2.4GHz is infinitely superior to any other frequency since it has a greater range
Very helpful Thanks Mike!
My ring came with the chime
oh for gods sake, you don't need a faceplate you don't need a wedge (reposition the button), you don't need a chime (use existing echos etc), you don't need new wifi hardwarre (just put your kit in 2.4 & 5). Also the greetings / message taking feature is indeed on the cheap wired model. Plus it has blooming preroll. Your review is intensely biased. Honestly, I'd just remove this inaccurate video review, it's worthless.
Everyone has different needs, or wants. I found the basic ring doorbell to be sufficient without purchasing any of the accessories and I purchased it from Woot for less than $30.00. A routine can be written to sound a doorbell chime and have Alexa say most any thing you want. Two way talk is there. Motion sensing with notifications. Pretty much all of the basic stuff. For me, spending more money would have been a waste.
Thank so much, how been wondering why my existing chime wasn't ringing🤔
You Need Buy Echo Dot 4th Generation White And U Put Your Echo Dot 4th Generation White In Your Bedroom And Alexa Will Say Motion Detected At Your Front Door!
When wiring your device, be sure to rap wire clockwise around screws….not the way you did it!
Good video, thanks. Some folks may also need to spend $$$s on the transformer / plug-in adapter if they can't use the existing wiring (mine runs on 8V for example).
Amazon is doing 50% off this model so I nabed one
I smashed all my ring cameras with a 12 lb hammer cause that's how good ring is
😭😭😭 you would have made this video 3 weeks ago,but thank you so much
Never pay for doorbell and still pay 10$ per M ...
Thank you! Very good info!
AND no capability to activate an existing mechanical doorbell! Get the Ezviz DB1C instead!
That suggested device doesn't show the video on an Echo Show. Any Echo device will serve as a doorbell for the Ring.
@@brianmi40 That may be true but not everyone wants or needs an Echo Show and many people would prefer to maintain their existing mechanical doorbell rather than listen to an electronic chime while still enjoying a great video doorbell. 🙂
you didn't factor in the ever running subscription fee too l😆
Not everyone needs all these extras
The Jumper Cable does not work with chimes over +-5 years. RUclips is not always accurate. Don’t get angry or frustrated. Do your homework.
Doesn't work with your chime box AT ALL!
