Looks like tons and tons of ppl and other medias are waiting for your review and me included. So wild. Any idea when it will go up? Searching for a dealer to purchase in Japan but... there doesn't seem to be anyone. Not even Amazon Japan. I need to figure out something.
This system 100% levels this camera up in an much more accessible way. I never use the CFast cards on my C200 because of the cost. This solves that issue. Thanks for sharing!!
This is selling for $400 on Amazon, plus $180 for the SSD = $580. So indeed it's cheaper than a CFAST, and double the size since the SSD is 1TB. But it's still really pricey. I hope this type of solution comes down to more reasonable pricing.
That's dope! Although $400 and shipping to UK (Extra $200 at least) is gonna run about £500, nearly enough to buy a 512gb cfast card itself (egodisk). If I didn't already have a few 256gb cards, I'd definitely buy this! - Also, great video!
I'm saving up for this camera, so hopefully that converter works out in the long run. I would definitely like to record for longer without breaking the bank.
Your videos are ALWAYS so well lit and produced. I'm a Canon C200 shooter and check out your vids frequently. I'd love to be a grip on set for one of your videos!
That’s good your going to do a follow up after “ thorough “ testing. A lot of biased RUclipsrs would give it the thumbs up before using it out in the real world. I wouldn’t rely on this product until it’s been thoroughly tested in various scenarios and reviewed by people like you. Great first vid!
Larry Dickerson yeah so far I'm loving this solution, I don't care about using Cfast cards anymore. I'll keep them in case of an emergency but if this continues to work as advertised I will only use this.
Even if you can close the Cfast door, it looks flexed and isn't "sealed" which long term both of those things are not ideal in a professional workflow. It's also $400 (from what I can find). So add that to a SSD and you're at the cost of a 512gb internal Cfast card which gives you over 60 minutes on one card. Definitely an awesome option to have, but I'd like to see a ribbon cable or a piece that tricks the camera into thinking the door is closed instead of a cable just flexing the closed door.
The door not closing 100% isn't as bad as it looks. As you said it's not ideal in a pro environment or say you're flying a Gimbal. In reality Cfast cards just need to be cheaper, that's really the solution to this problem.
Armando Ferreira I totally agree. I just think in the grand scheme of camera costs ($7500) and a 512GB Cfast is ~$600 and covers 99% of jobs. Drop in the bucket. My batteries cost more for mine.
Brett Carlsen Agree for light projects 512 is suffice but for longer projects that require a lot of storage this thing is nice. But this is not for everyone and of course nothing beats the convince of popping in a CFast card that isn't tethered to something else.
If you're staying in the small codec, this device makes sense. You could fit an entire shoot on 1 SSD, not having to open and swap drives. But the C200 is at its best when shooting RAW, and you want the extended, less expensive storage for RAW shooting, and this drive will fill up on a big professional shoot. Not a chance I'm swapping exposed electronics in the field when the drive is full. Not only can you not stick label on that drive anywhere, but storage of this drive will be a disaster waiting to happen. Static discharge anyone? This needed to be an SSD drive enclosure-- the SSD mounted inside a plastic, swappable housing (see the Atomos Inferno), not a drive intended for an internal machine. I'm not going to diss the video, it's a quality review. But there are pitfalls in this device that make it completely unacceptable in a professional environment.
Dude you gotta make a follow up video ... I am really curious to know if this solution works ... it will literally not make sell one of my kidneys to buy Cfasts ..
Wow. We have 3 C200's, I'm really curious on your thoughts on it after using it for a while. Thanks for posting, camera tech is mind blowing these days!
The fact it doesn’t need external power is a real win. Looking forward to the stress tests. Would you mind testing out what happens to the raw files when the camera loses power? Will be interesting to see if the files are closed upon the next start up or if you lose any data.
Just picked up a Canon C200. Looking at purchasing the SolidPod but wanted to see how it's holding up now that you've had it for a few months? BTW...nice job on the video. Looks great.
I disagree, this thing is the best accessorie I've owned for the C200. It has nothing to do with affording CFast Cards. They don't make anything larger than 512GB Cfast cards which IMO is not enough. I've used this on so many projects and it's a MUST HAVE for any C200 owner.
Same concept as the mSATA drive to USB 3 from VideoDevices, If I were ever to built a camera I would use that same concept. I would go for NVMe PCIe to USB 3.1, built the enclosure and user would buy their own SSD drive.
Does anyone know if this would work for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, recording at DCI 4K 60fps 12Bit lossless RAW? On the product page it doesn't list it as supported, but the max write speed for the SolidPod is listed as "Max Read/Write Speed: 550 MB/s". When doubling the CinemaDNG RAW storage for 30fps DCI 4K, as listed on Blackmagic's website, the estimated value would be just shy of the max write speed, at 544 MB/s (272 MB/s * 2). This is assuming that the SSD inside the SolidPod would also support that speed.
I purchased the Samsung 860 EVO 1TB mSATA SSD, but I use a different cable(Marian Munteanu). At 24fps 4k, works great. At 60fps 4k, the Canon C200 stops recording about 10-15 secs in, saying there's a buffering issue. Lame. I'm pretty sure it's the ssd not being able to keep up. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I think it's the ssd and not the cable.
I think I would prefer a seperate box I could put in my bag that just offloads the cfast to a standard 2.5inch ssd, than I could make do with just 2x 128gb c-fast cards
Armando, two questions: 1) Can you also use the PRO version of these drivers instead of the EVO? 2) B&H sells the Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SATA III 2.5" Internal SSD. Can these be opened to remove the chip inside to be used with a SolidPod? THANKS SO MUCH MAN!
I think it’s a great device but the price of the unit plus the price of the ssd. It’s still not cheap not to mention the cfast cards will eventually be cheaper.
Can you then just insert the dummy CFast card into a reader and transfer the footage from the SSD through that? Awesome bit of kit was wondering when someone would bring something like this out.
Cool stuff. Does it make the Cfast card door bulge? Would you be able to show a closeup of what it looks like with the door closed? Also, can you format the SSD from the camera? Or do you have to format it on a computer.
so I tried buying this other adapter called Zitay which is basically the old CCTech and i find it difficult to shut the door for my C200. Is it difficult to shut the door with the SolidPod? like it looks fairly easy in this video, but yeah, just don't want to risk not being able to close the door.
Hola Armando, te sigo en tu canal en español, justo estaba buscando una opción como esta para RED Komodo, ¿Sabes si funciona sin problemas este recurso para evitar comprar tarjetas Cfast? Saludos.
Hi Armando! I have a question for you and i hope at you are going to help me. what is The second unit camera to use when you are shooting a film or a music video with canon c200, and the best lenses to share between them.
From what I've read it's impossible. Sd to cfast is completely incompatible and would require something in between to translate which isn't ideal when recording. Best off using something like the Atomos ninja V over HDMI or going the pocket 4k route with usb-c to SSD.
Man this is dope and I love the form factor. The 1tb SSD alone is super cheap. Most of all it requires no external power! I wonder if this will work for the Ursa Mini????
How did you get around the media door not being closed to record. I have access to an xc15 and a c300 but the main issue is that I can't record without the media door being closed. Yes, there is a button that I can press to get the camera to think the door is closed, but I rent the cameras and need to come up with another way to keep that door button reliably pressed without releasing mid record. Anyone come up with a solution for this?
Curious to know how it's working out for you from the time you posted this? Picking up a C200 this week and if this thing works as well as it does in this video then I might pick myself up one before the end of the year!
