I think that season was a turning point... It seems from then on, they seemed to favor the most wearable, vs. the most fashion forward and innovative. That season with the plus sized designer won officially made the show a joke, and I've stopped watching.
Why would a plus size designer winning be a joke? She made on trend fashion for plus-size women which is innovative considering no other fashion designer out there has ever dared to create an entire line of that nature.
I agree with you about the original point of Project Runway. It's actually why I stopped watching because it was no longer about creating something that no one has ever seen before or being innovative. Being "on trend' is boring, but probably more marketable for the designer. I felt like her creativity came from choosing to do a plus-size range and have actual plus-size models. That's unfortunately innovative in the fashion world because nobody ever caters to the plus-size woman, the biggest market for clothing in the United States.
sososohauntedAshley was also creative because she was unashamedly girly she didn't care if people were going to say "ew pink" but I think a lot of plus sized women don't really want to wear clothes like hers.

What really pissed me off about season 8 was that they did nothing but praise Mondo. Not until the last episode did they start saying "well who is this girl, who is going to buy these clothes". It was never an issue before, they never cared before, then all of a sudden it was such a huge issue that was worth giving the win to someone else simply because their line was more "commercial".
yes. The 180 they did on mondo, after he has designed his collection, when he can't do anything about it: it dismayed me. To move the goalposts like that seemed so unfair. The judges really seemed like they all thought they were supposed to be judging on different criteria. I am not one for reality shows. I am only watching this show because I am a designer/maker who is self taught and as such the world of fashion is like an undiscovered country to me once it gets to this level. I have watched a few British reality shows like Great British Bake-off and Sewing Bee. Never have I seen a final judges' deliberation like the PR: season 8 one. It was almost painful to watch. They should have something written down before they start out, a mission statement. "Project Runway aims to find the designer who most..." Props to Tim who saw through Ivy and Gretchen. Personally I would never want to work with Ivy, she is just like a mean schoolgirl. On UK shows like sewing bee you never get any of this bitchiness or drama.
Mondo’s girl is the Skipper to Betsey Johnson’s Barbie, in my opinion. His viewpoint is very relevant. We all want to look young and fun, especially the older we get. I love an eccentrically dressed 70-year-old woman!
@Verica Vuckovic that was the worst part of the entire farce of a series. Mondo not only deserved the win, he could have done great things with the prizes. Gretchen was always going to waste it, she neither had the talent nor the intelligence to put what she won to good use.
Oh my gosh. I rewatched it recently and when they announced Gretchen as the winner I almost spit the water I was drinking out of my mouth. I guess my brain had like rewired its memories to correct the judges and name Mondo the winner. I was convinced he had won originally. Glad I'm not alone in that lol
I remember that he lost primarily because one of the reasons the judges gave was because Seth Aaron won the season prior, so they wanted someone with a different "flavor", plus he went on to win the first All-Stars (wasn't until season 3 that they started bringing in winners).
I am so glad Tim said this. I agree with Tim. It seems as if MK and NG were completely incapable of seeing the clothes without the accessories. Take away the hats, stockings, shoes and Mondo's outfits would be very ready to wear. Mondo takes very bold prints and makes them into neutrals. If I were to go into a store and see Gretchen's clothing I would pass it by because it would look like older aged Montgomery Ward clothes. I am 40. I am older. I do like Gretchen's items but I would have to see them on a mannequin to see the full potential. If one of Mondo's pieces were hanging on a rack or on a mannequin I would be immediately interested because I would have never thought to pair things as he does. I would try more options. If I found an outfit to be too busy I would simplify it with a solid pant, skirt or top. Andy and Mondo should have been in the top two. Gretchen's=boring. Tim gives great advice. Nicole S is a younger buyer, more in tune with today's fashion don't you think, NG?
Mondo should've won season 8 I agree I was disappointed with who won. In the season there was a few times I thought Mondo in the individual challenges should've won over Gretchen
I can't believe that Gretchen won. I'm not even bothering to watch the finale. That woman didn't even deserve to **go** to fashion week, there should have been only 3 contestants. What a load of crap!!!! I found out on this video who won and it's downright sickeningly wrong. The whole season she bullied the others, talked crap about them, and her final design was rubbish. WTH? I absolutely adore Tim Gunn.
Same here Sandy, I’m literally so upset she even got the third spot with that clothes that I’d probably wear to the farmers market... runway should be about the red carpet, the gala ... to feel special not a look for every regular Tuesday feeding the cat.. 🙈
I'VE NEVER UNDERSTOOD THIS!!!! After all these years, this still stands out as the most shocking SHOCKING, blatant and infuriating mistake EVER. I'm happy for Mondo, that he got to go on to win All Stars, and also to participate in Under the Gunn!
Tim Gunn is such a sweetheart. Such a shame for this decision and when you see where the designers are now, it’s clear the judges made a big mistake that year. Mondo’s creations were always full of ideas, patterns and colours but he made them work every time. His collection reflected that. I think it worked perfectly as a collection and more importantly, you take his looks apart and every piece is still interesting. If it were in a store, it’d immediately catch my eye and chances are I’d buy several items. Hell it’s almost 8 years later and I’d still wear many of them in a heartbeat. His pieces are playful and creative but timelessly elegant at the same time. Gretchen’s collection looked both boring and borderline ugly, it reminded me of the polyester granny housecoats from the 70s. Same fabric, same colour, same print; everything was just ughh… The only salvaging point was the green leather (that MK hated btw) and the jewelry. It wasn’t fresh, it wasn’t modern, quite the opposite. It might be good for 20 yos who can afford to dress like they’re 45 and still only look 35 and think it’s hip (it’s not) but even then I don’t really think many would be inspired by that colour palette.
I've been rewatching old seasons on line - I remember how angry I was about this season - Tim is 100% right. Crack is the only possible answer. Also, I have to say this entire season produced some of the worst 'fashion' I've seen on the show. It was like everyone took a time machine back to the worst days of 70's fashion and cut the backs out - ugh.
Ahh, what a relief. So, it wasn’t just me. I TOO felt Mondo should have won that season. Gretchen was a pain in the A-hole the entire season. Mondo’s clothes were more fashion forward and creative. He was far more talented than Gretchen, IMO.
Truly a teacher. I watched a Tim Gunn interview and learned a new word Pedagogy. It's the approach of teaching and the process of learning. It's an ancient Greek word. Always teaching, even when he's not trying
Mondo deserved to win but I sort of feel bad for Gretchen - it must be hard to deal with all the disgruntled fans who were mad with the outcome. Like imagine you won and then saw Tim say all this stuff about you. She was a good designer too and ultimately it was the judge’s decision. Mondo is a god though, I’m glad he has been able to launch a career!
In an interview, TG stated how furious he was with Weinstien's submarining the contestants when he learned the desginers' projected became Weinstien's property. The desinger's basically became contractedd to make designs for them and given next to nothing in return - revenue sharing, royalties, using their own label. It was also difficult for them to buyout their contract. Tim on numerous times was given the shell game when he advocated for them. He stated the only reason why he kept on was to keep the designers from being abused. I guess Weinstien couch was also a wardrobe.
OMG, I've been Binge Watching Project Runway and Project Runway All Stars and after watching Season 8 Ep. 12 I think it was where the final 4 contestants had to show a 3 piece "mini" show of their collection and one would be eliminated, I cried my eyes out all over again as Michael Costello got eliminated. Having all of the seasons and episodes so fresh in my mind, I honestly cannot remember a more wrenching and heart breaking moment as when Michael C. was eliminated and watched his reaction and genuine grief and shame over not having made it to Fashion Week. There was no effing way Gretchen should have made it to the Finale, let alone WON the season. Of course, the ultimate irony is that she isn't even a fashion designer anymore. What a WASTE of prize money on her. Mondo and/or Michael would have been marvelous winners of Season 8. Tim Gunn was absolutely right to be pissed off about the judges' ultimate decision in Season 8.
Love this! Gretchen was good at the start but after that she was only memorable because of her ego, her meaness and her fakeness! Mondo was the clear winner!
Ok this is refreshing for me to see. Gretchen should not have won that season at all!!!! Her attitude has nothing to do with it for me, her clothes were the problem. She did not present a winning collection at all. Her clothes were tacky and cheap looking. Mondo clearly should have won that one. That is just my opinion on the matter and I could care less if anyone disagrees with me or not. The good thing is it freed Mondo up for "Project Runway Allstars" and he finally got his much deserved win
My favorite part is how Nina goes about 'loving' Mondo's work and then goes about the finals saying it's 'all color' or some junk. Nina pretty much went on the record in Season 9 Episode 4 with that challenge that she doesn't want colors or prints. Here's a similar scenario; in Season 12 Alexandria has the near same style of brown and black crap as Gretchen while Dom has colors and prints (I think) as Mondo. What's the difference here; Gretchen was able to win because Nina had Michael K in cahoots but Alexandria isn't as lucky because Nina doesn't have Kors anymore, we fortunately have Zac Posen who wasn't about to let any of that muddy garbage win again.
+Taprus Light Not true, Alexandria's collection was actually picked by most major fashion reviewers and editors as the winner. She brought a real sense of the Scandinavian aesthetic that the show had really never seen before and managed to apply it stylishly and with flawless execution. I loved Dom and had no problem with her winning (their collections were really neck and neck, imo) but don't discredit Alexandria by putting her on the same level as Gretchen, their collections were miles apart both conceptually and in their effectiveness.
+Taprus Light The comment of polished01 is spot on. Alexandria's collection felt more European (Scandinavian specificly), and that's probably why it didn't resonate that well over there.
Alexandria seemed a little deranged. I believe you should be confident, but she sounded like she would climb a bell tower with an AK15 if she didn’t win. 🤪🤪🤪
Gretchen made a collection of dirty diaper pants and grandpa sweaters, which might be Amazing for the Hipster/Millennials of today, but at the time they were pretty bad. I remember Heidi really wanting Mondo to win and Nina hating that Mondo had these clowns on some of his clothes. So, Gretchen won, we all pretty much hated it and he went on to win a shot load of money on All Stars season 1. Plus he's on a lot to seems. Honestly I couldn't even point out Gretchen. No offense to her though!! She just had a not awesome IMO collection. Oh well. This video rocked!!!
+ShanteYouStay Haha, those grandpa sweaters are still pretty bad, even now. They'll make the 2010s the new 80s when in 10 yrs time we're going to look back and ask "What the actual hell were we thinking?"
Not a fan of the show, just a fan of Tim as a person because I saw him talk about some difficulties on the 'kids' version of the show and how he handled it. He had every right to walk and stayed **only** because of the kids' experience. Ever since I've been impressed with him as a human and I'll happily listen to whatever he's got to say.
I always knew this and I'm so glad Tim is coming out. The favoritism was so blatant it was disgusted. I'm so glad to hear Tim's sensible words. Gretchen was a bully and her collection was weAK
Love Tim Gunn. Saw Joe Vecherelli in a class and he shared a sleeve pattern from Mr. Gunn and I am studying it so I can learn how to construct a sleeve. I consider it a treasure.
this was the mean girl season, Gretchens did not deserve to win, Mondo did and the way Ivy and Gretchen treated Michael C. was awful they were acting like bullys
The win can be golden handcuffs. The judges might want to hire the hot designer themselves, so they give the win to someone less talented. Sure enough, Mondo has worked for Project Runway screening potential designers for many seasons as well being an All Star. Meanwhile, Gretchen who?
Just hearing Gretchen's name and I'm triggered. I still remember the night I watched Tim Gunn "scold" the designers for letting Gretchen steamroll over them for the group project, the mom inside me was cheering and applauding. I always felt bad for the designers but he had a point, not only did they lose but there was no vision or cohesion in their collection. I remember cursing my tv when she was announced the winner and there are still days where my mom or sister will say out of nowhere "Mondo should have won," and I always agree with them and we decided the worlds been unjust ever since .
Yes! When he went off on the others for letting Gretchen bully them, I was screaming, FINALLY!!! The way she back tracked and through others under the bus, she deserved all the smoke.
My dad used to call someone like this a "straight shooter." He means what he says and he says what he means. You can't buy character like that. You either have it, or you don't.
I just love this guy! He is so honest and passionate about what he feels and is such a blessing to the contestants on the show. Almost EVERY critique he gives is spot on.
I love the relationship between Heidi and Tim. I wish there was another designer show with them. Making the Cut must not be doing well. I've only seen two or three episodes and I'm not sure they're being renewed. Sad.
I am just going back and watching season by season. I am still upset that Gretchen won. Great jewelry, monotone fabric and Underwear on the runway. You will never convince me me she (plus early attitude) was ever better than Mondo. So upset.
Love Tim Gunn!!! This video kinda proves that the "establishment" of fashion really does not look into real designers. Its more of like who can we bring in the "establishment."
Oh man, I love Tim Gunn and I completely agree with everything he said. I was so upset when Gretchen won over Mondo but I have to say, now that he is the winner of the All Stars season, I can finally let go of that. I'm so happy that he finally got the win and recognition he has always deserved. Congratulations to an amazing designer!
Im glad to hear that...I...am...not...crazy! I screamed at the tv when they said Gretchen won that season. I'd thought for sure that Mondo had it in the bag. I couldn't believe Gretchen made it through the first few rounds, let alone winning it all. 🤮
Somebody bought off Nina and Michael Kors, that's the only reason that their arguments make sense. They were clearly shilling for the advertisers and sponsors. None of their arguments against Mondo or their support of Gretchen held water. I'm glad That Gretchen left fashion and that Mondo and Michael Costello proved them waaaaayyyyy wrong. So happy for Michael Costello's phenomenal success.
The greatest crime about this Season was that the obvious winner should have been Mondo, hands down but the most drab collection I've ever seen in a finale won. It was just disgusting! And that Nina and Michael fought soooo hard for it. It was such a mind ***k since the previous winners were just as brilliant and dramatic and over the top as Mondo but they were the winners in their Season without any reservation whatsoever! I am still disappointed. I don't know anyone who would be inspired by anything Gretchen created in that entire Season including for the Finale runway show. ....ick.
i was in the middle of the season and i guess this was a HUGE spoiler. But I don´t want to continue watching anymore really. Had mondo won, I would´ve watched it anyway, but Gretchen.... really?!?
good to see somebody on the show was willing to speak out about that crazy season. But tim fails to realize, I think, that he sometimes gives advice which negatively impacts the designers who must deal with crazy judges. what happened with Andy's collection? he was so different in the finale, no more of his "warrior woman" they warned him about. it was dull! it made me even sicker to think that Michael could have had his place and maybe shown something better. but I agree with tim here, that season was crazy, moody, hateful judging. Valerie was kicked around like a dog!
I suspect Mondo's back story (his HIV status) might have spooked the producers enough to not want Mondo to win. Gretchen Jones was an easier sell as a champion.
It was so sad that the reason Gretchen won was because it was the trend at the moment and because it was she was more "sellable"..mondo was clearly more fashion foward and unique...honestly gretchen's collection was something you can find at wallmart

@Verica Vuckovic that was the worst part of the entire farce of a series. Mondo not only deserved the win, he could have done great things with the prizes. Gretchen was always going to waste it, she neither had the talent nor the intelligence to put what she won to good use.
@Verica Vuckovic Whats even funnier is that Micheal C. is now probably the most successful out of all of them.
@@cutebutevil7387 Whats even funnier is that Micheal C. is now probably the most successful out of all of them.
Sometimes late at night I remember the outcome of season 8 and i get so angry I have to get up and get a glass of water.
Just do what the rest of us do, forget Gretchen just like we immediately forgot her designs.
Lol I completely forgot that Gretchen won. In my mind Mondo was the winner.
😂😂😂😂 right
Me tooooo
I remember when Heidi announced that Gretchen won, my heart just sank! Yes as Tim said yes, I feel happy for her but Mondo should win.
MC and NG just pissed Mundo did not take their advice. Had he not used the hats and cut the damn sleves off the popadotdress he would have won.
How refreshing to hear the honesty!
Mondo should have won and his collection was better. Gretchen was a mean girl.
Agreed
She's not mean, she's just basic. She designs basic clothes for basic bitches.
*slow claps*
Mondo should've won season 8 I agree I was disappointed with who won. In the season there was a few times I thought Mondo in the individual challenges should've won over Gretchen
God, I wish Mondo had won. He's so much more talented.
Tim Gunn is just pure unadulterated sassy ace energy and I’m here for it.
i remember being so angry at who won.
Me too Sam! All these years later and IM STILL MAD!
Ashley Peters really?
I love this man more and more everytime he opens his mouth 😂
Great credit goes to this host for letting the guest TALK, without annoying interruptions! What a concept!
@Sandy Vale I hope you watched the season 8 finale in the end because Mondo's collection was worth it.
@@Laura.Vanadzina Mondo deserved to win. I'm so happy for Michael too. He's huuuuge now
Same here Sandy, I’m literally so upset she even got the third spot with that clothes that I’d probably wear to the farmers market... runway should be about the red carpet, the gala ... to feel special not a look for every regular Tuesday feeding the cat.. 🙈
Tim throwing shade at Gretchen XD!! He's right though, no way she deserved to win.
Iris that 'mistake' is called rigging a show.
Of all the shows I have seen, Mondo is the only true rememerable designer.
Good design is memorable and timeless.
Season 4 you must have missed.
Seasons 3 and 4 were amazing!!! Christian Siriano is the ONLY designer from the show who has had a noteworthy career.
Michael Costello is one of the top designers now in Hollywood, even though he didn’t win!
@@coquigirl0789 thanks for this. I loved Micheal and after seeing your comment I've just discovered he designed some of my favourite red carpet looks.
Always teaching, even when he's not trying
where is the full version of this interview? such a funny honest man I want to become Tim Gunn!!
I agree wholeheartedly!!!!!!!! Gretchen should never have won.
you are a wiseman tim gunn
Love Tim Dunn!! He was & is Project Runway!! Miss him lots!!
Oh man, I remember watching this season so many years ago and being baffled by the judges decision too. Little did I knew that Tim agreed with me
I often disagree with Nina and Michael, I feel like Mugatu from Zoolander when they're speaking. "Am I on crazy pills?!"
Wow I love Tim Gunn...he's so funny and he doesn't know it...and yes in all honesty Mundo should have won!
we love u so much tim.
huge heart and
brilliant fella.
Love this! Gretchen was good at the start but after that she was only memorable because of her ego, her meaness and her fakeness! Mondo was the clear winner!
I've rarely agreed with the judges, that season least of all. LOVE Tim Gunn!! This just proves what an upstanding person he is.
when i think i can't love this man more...
+Taprus Light
The comment of polished01 is spot on. Alexandria's collection felt more European (Scandinavian specificly), and that's probably why it didn't resonate that well over there.
Alexandria seemed a little deranged. I believe you should be confident, but she sounded like she would climb a bell tower with an AK15 if she didn’t win. 🤪🤪🤪
"I sit behind the crew, the camera crew...in the LITERAL AND METAPHORICAL DARK."
"Come on, Heidi, you're not really smoking crack...OR ARE YOU?!"
Honestly the top 3 should have been Michael Costello, Mondo Guerra, and Andy south
Michael did have his low moments, but looks like he's really killed it since the show so he's the real winner
I stopped watching the show because Mondo lost
plushpuppy32 - Me too. I completely lost any respect for the show after Mondo lost.
LOVE LISTENING TO MR. GUNN TALK.... CLASSIC...
I love Tim!!!!
Me too 🥰
Kudos to Tim for saying what he really thinks.
April did make a diaper tho
Not a fan of the show, just a fan of Tim as a person because I saw him talk about some difficulties on the 'kids' version of the show and how he handled it. He had every right to walk and stayed **only** because of the kids' experience. Ever since I've been impressed with him as a human and I'll happily listen to whatever he's got to say.
I always knew this and I'm so glad Tim is coming out. The favoritism was so blatant it was disgusted. I'm so glad to hear Tim's sensible words. Gretchen was a bully and her collection was weAK
Tim Gunn is a very smart, cool, & nice person.
He really is - so much passion without compromise! They are blessed to have someone like him on Project Runway!!
gosh I love him morrrrrrrrrre
Love Tim Gunn. Saw Joe Vecherelli in a class and he shared a sleeve pattern from Mr. Gunn and I am studying it so I can learn how to construct a sleeve. I consider it a treasure.
this was the mean girl season, Gretchens did not deserve to win, Mondo did and the way Ivy and Gretchen treated Michael C. was awful they were acting like bullys
So true! I was floored when Gretchen won. She should have been eliminated in the first 4 weeks.
She ain't even designing anymore. What a effing shame.
Gretchen's clothes are something I can get in any boho boutique.
Mondo is Mondo.
Mondo's loss was the reason Project Runway All Stars was born
I love the relationship between Heidi and Tim. I wish there was another designer show with them. Making the Cut must not be doing well. I've only seen two or three episodes and I'm not sure they're being renewed. Sad.
Love this man.
I am just going back and watching season by season. I am still upset that Gretchen won. Great jewelry, monotone fabric and Underwear on the runway. You will never convince me me she (plus early attitude) was ever better than Mondo. So upset.
GO TIM. Best of them!
in the show (After editing) it looked like Kors wanted mondo to win
The man's wit is spot on. Thank you for putting a smile on my face every time I see this Mr. Gunn.
Jeffrey Sebelia was my least favorite designer.
Love Tim Gunn!!! This video kinda proves that the "establishment" of fashion really does not look into real designers. Its more of like who can we bring in the "establishment."
Gretchen was one of my least favorite winners, along with Anya.
Edson Ceron Anya was one of my favorites throughout her season but she should not have won!
"Can I go online and see it?"
He's so sweet
everyone loves Tim Gunn
He is a riot
Mondo should have won. I was shocked and disheartened when he did not win.
I don't know anyone who would be inspired by anything Gretchen created in that entire Season including for the Finale runway show. ....ick.
I thought Mondo had won before rewatching this season on hulu. Ugh!!! I was so upset again!!
Mr. Gunn is such a lovely gentleman with integrity and, of course, impeccable taste.
That man spilt some T!
i was in the middle of the season and i guess this was a HUGE spoiler. But I don´t want to continue watching anymore really. Had mondo won, I would´ve watched it anyway, but Gretchen.... really?!?
+TheCommonGirl Style oh, still worth it. There's SO much drama. ahah
You could watch PR All Stars. Mondo's in that one, too.
good to see somebody on the show was willing to speak out about that crazy season.
This gave me so much life! I love Tim so freaking much. I'm currently watching season 8 and ughhhhhh those judges were seriously on crack :/
I suspect Mondo's back story (his HIV status) might have spooked the producers enough to not want Mondo to win. Gretchen Jones was an easier sell as a champion.
I love you,Tim Gunn!
Gretchen took that money and bailed...Who knew???
Michael Kors wanted Gretchen to win because he is a "ready to wear" designer and so is she. It was all an ego trip to validate his type of work.
Love me some Tim Gunn!!!
Gretchen's line was the worse, hands down. I'm glad that Tim has the Tim Gunn's save this season!
I LOVE HIM
It was so sad that the reason Gretchen won was because it was the trend at the moment and because it was she was more "sellable"..mondo was clearly more fashion foward and unique...honestly gretchen's collection was something you can find at wallmart
