  • @pattyorigami

Great video! I always find nuggets of insight I hadn't thought of on this channel.
As to #5, I like to have my students practice uppercuts off of a slip, drawing the shoulder toward the opposite knee to produce the body movement you demonstrated here. Also, for those who keep using too much arm, I have them grab their ear when loading up for the punch and then they can let go once they stand up into the uppercut.
    Thanks for this awesome content!

Great video on uppercuts... 1 thing my coach taught me 2 years ago was to throw the uppercut more in the middle of my body. Just like you said, don't throw it outside of ur body or like mortal kombat. But I still practice this and its to bring it up where my elbow is rising right infront of my vertical line of my abs to create more power.

    1. Practice upper cut to body on heavy bag
    2. Uppercut is a close ranged move. Be close
    3. Use if opponent is always ducking head or shorter.
    4. Don't overexaggerate movement, uppercut then hook is good combo because uppercut brings their head out of their guard.
    5. Not angled but straight up
    6. Not a curl movement, starts at the feet, knees, hips, core, shoulder, fist. Less arm movement and keep gap small as possible for more guard.

The distance thing is super important in uppercuts AND hooks. I threw a hook from too far away in sparring last week and was already thinking about the next shot in my head so I flexed my arm too late. My buddy blocked right before I flexed my arm (my hand was also too high above my shoulder angle-wise) and my shoulder popped right out. Ouch... Always be in close when you throw that stuff and stay calm + concentrate on what youre throwing when you're throwing it.

Nothing teaches you how to throw a straight uppercut more than a horizontal bag. If you throw an upper to one of those bags without your hand and forearm aligned correctly you receive great pain. Ouch! Also, Nadeem chopped heads with those long corkscrew uppers. He always loved to side-step to the outside at an angle while delivering that long upper in between the opponents' guard. Great stuff! Thanks for the video, Shane, great tips

The only rational I can see so an angled uppercut is if you are doing a smash like how Ruddock would do. Amazing for crushing guards and mix up KOs but it must be used properly as it can leave you exposed if they dodge it or smother it. Great videos! New fan
