This right here. Gamers are no longer profitable like corps and other institutions are now with the huge demand for AI capable chips. Looks like intel dropped into the gpu scene at the right time and evga's pullout from making gpu is starting to make a lot more sense given how nvidia most likely will try to abandon their gaming segment or at least greatly rein it in.

That's the reality of this world that's all. Nvidia and Jensen never were your friends guys. They sold you a product you needed, you paid for it and game with it, we were happy and yes it worked nicely for 2 decades.
But now for the same silicon area, they can create chips for AI that will sell for much much more than a GPU for gamer would. And oh surprise, in this world driven by profit, they don't care that much about gamers anymore and jump into the next wagon. I mean, some gamers were seriously thinking that those big corporations are your friends or reward your loyalty?
AI also has an impact on productivity, businesses, companies using it plan to make money. Gaming is just entertainment, that's why B2B will always earn more in that field. While I like gaming, I think some gamers become a bit too entitled regarding their position, especially the DIY gamers. We are nothing, absolutely nothing compared to the AI market.
That's sad but a good return to earth.

You're projecting your own AMD fanboyism (because they're cheap so obviously 'your friend') onto a group of people that would have liked AMD, Intel, or any other company that was pushing tech this far.

    • @syncmonism
      @syncmonism 3 месяца назад +22

By doing WHAT exactly? What do you propose?
They could try to get aggressive with pricing, but they can only cut the prices so much before having to sell GPUs at cost, which they are not willing to do.
Even if they can grow their discrete graphics "market share" by cutting margins low, there's no guaruntee that this will buy them any meaningful amount of brand loyalty. They have so many other product categories that they make a lot more money with, so they really don't care that much about aggressively buying market share in the consumer GPU segment.

I think they are focused on their CPUs right now.
I wish they'd focus more on their GPU tech like improving FSR and putting those RDNA3 ai instructions to work.
If it wasn't for the VRAM I'd have bought a 4070 instead of the 7800 XT, but for 50-100 dollars more the 4070 wasn't worth it with the reduced VRAM and lesser performance.

AMD is to focused on the AI market to care about gamers. Only cards they announced where workstation/professional/AI GPUs. They can't even be bothered to spend money to improve their upscaler, have actual RT hardware.
Nvidia has done way more for gamers in the last 5 years than any other brand. Continuous upgrades to DLSS, very good latency reduction (Reflex), tools to mod and update old games (Remix), tools to improve HDR on PC games (RTX HDR), tools to add modern features to games (RTX IO and Streamline).
No idea how they can be the leader in every metric, and leading the way in developing tools and technology to help game developers and still have people saying they don't care about gamers. Sure they have a big focus on AI, but that's every tech company right now.
Nvidia didn't give up on gamers, the offer the best product for every metric (raster, RT, upscaling, GPU compute). Everyone else gave up, because they don't want to spend the money, time and resources that it would take to catch up.

There's no incentive for nvidia to keep going with gaming gpus for multiple reasons:
    1. AI is making them FAR more money than gaming gpus are, so they can drop their gaming division with no losses.
    2. AMD has a long history of not captitalizing on opportunities handed to them on a silver platter.
    3. AMD stepping away from the high-end market will make AMD a non-competitor to Nvidia if their price-to-performance isn't competitive.

None of them ever gave a shit how you feel - that includes all the rest, intel, amd, etc. A lot of people are probably too young to remember this, but at one point apple was in so much trouble Bill Gates actually decided to help them out and essentially saved them - even steve jobs said that. Now apple is one of the biggest companies in the world do you think they gave a shit about how microsoft saved their ass back then? About all the people who stuck with them through the hard times? Hell no.
The only companies that actually care about their customers are those that are small enough to be personally in contact with their customers. They have a reason to make sure they maintain good relations. Big corpos that make trillions? You're just a statistic to them.

I think you might be misunderstanding Nvidia's focus. They didn't talk about gaming at the conference because there isn't anything new to announce in that area right now. When they have new gaming products or updates, I'm sure they'll share them. The emphasis on AI reflects the current priorities and advancements happening within the company, and they have a lot to showcase in that domain at the moment.

Look at it this way. There is limited silicon wafer output but an ever growing demand for gaming gpu AND AI capable chips. What would be more profitable for nvidia? Using up a portion of the wafer supply to make gaming gpu which sell for only a fraction of what they can get out of corporate and scientific sales. I'm actually surprised they still make gaming gpu at all given the difference in profit levels.

If you're getting 10 times the revenue from one sector rather than the other, it's no surprise really. The writing was on the wall for a couple of years now. They have no reason to give upon gaming but it'll be like "it's 100$ more expensive, take it or leave it" because the same wafers can go for insane profit margins instead. And no AMD won't rush in to fill it up because they're actively trying to do the same thing.

Nvidia would do everyone a favour by just leaving the PC gaming market at this point. Their monopoly is stifling their competition from investing into more powerful cards because they know Nvidia will just undercut them and destroy any new product AMD or Intel develops in order to compete.
Same with Sony and Microsoft in the console market, they need to leave it to smaller companies who only focus on gaming to return to the market (like Sega).
These companies get (or are) too big and greedy, all of them.

At a far, far lower cost to them. That server can have at most 576 cards in it. And they're gauging the corporate clients for all they have. Why would they talk about GPUs for gamers when most gamers are and will remain on midrange GPU that cost around 500-650 a pop?

AMD is continuing to release am4 cpus in order to promote the possible longevity of AM5. Theyre capturing 2 "markets" with that move... The am4 owners and the new pc builders. A 2600 owner could probably get a decent price build going for a new intel setup but a new am4 cpu will be a better deal and if they want more performance then they are more likely to go amd just because they see that am4 CPUs are still available years later. They may lose a bit of am5 sales due to people upgrading on am4 but the overall perspective is positive for am5.

I love how people think the work on AI computing by AMD and Nvidia et al won't help their gaming. Yes, all this extra money to develop their GPUs and general technology and an increase in total computing, will have no positive impact on the entire industry and the technology used for your PC. They'll actually develop a sub-standard technology exclusively for your consumer graphics cards and there won't be any relation between the two product lines. Just like the last hard drive, doesn't help gamers because it's made for servers and Oculink is too, which is obviously useless for the PC market. Our tech has always trickled down from the server market. Indeed, this is how technology works full stop. That GPS on your phone? It wasn't developed so that we could all find the local supermarket. The World Wide Web? Tim Berners Lee didn't create that at CERN to share cat videos.
TLDR; know where your towel is, and don't panic.

Nvidia betrayed nobody, they are doing everything that makes them the most profit which they are legally obliged to do as a publicly listed company. Gamers do not make them the most money and haven't for a long time, people need to get used to this reality. They probably won't reduce the prices of the new cards either because TSMC 3nm wafers cost a fortune, plus all of the packaging of the silicon which is also expensive. People really need to watch a few videos on how chips are processed them you might understand why they cost what they do.

A lot of gamers are completely out of touch with the reality. Just because they buy a GPU worth a few hundred of dollars every couple of years doesn't make them the makers of a company or give them a high status.
Especially not against the Business market. We buy GPUs from time to time to consume entertainment. Businesses and companies in AI buy expensive AI accelerators to try to CREATE services or solutions that can make money. Gamers weight almost NOTHING compared to this.
Typical gamer thinks that because he bought a 4090, Nvidia should be thankful to them?
They sell you a 4090 with a 600mm2 die with 24GB of memory for 1800 bucks. They sell H100 with a die size of 800mm2 and 80GB of memory for 30,000 bucks!!! And they cannot make enough of them, the backlog is almost one year long.
Some Gamers should learn the reality of the world and be more humble, not everything gravitates around them.

Also just to compare, during the mining bubble, the products of choice of Nvidia were still mainstream GPU, sold at max twice the price. An AI accelerator right now is sold 10 times the price of a consumer GPU for the same silicon area.
