Just a thought, if you like the way strap 2 hangs but the ease of strap 3, try putting the hook pointing down on the back of the head and hook it like you would strap 3.
My first ukulele has a command hook. I use an old purse strap with a small key ring at the end. It has served me well for 7 years and counting! The strap is most likely woven in Guatamala, so it looks similar to a traditional strap, just not as wide.
I made a strap that holds just the neck which is the only part that needs support since the body sits in my lap (I play sitting). Just wind each end around the neck and tie to the length that suits. Tying with a bow instead of a knot makes it flexible. Now I can use my left hand with my thumb behind the neck without worrying about using my left hand to hold the neck in position. Thanks for giving me this great idea.
I would never have thought of this but fitted the command hooks to my Ukulele 6 months ago. They have stayed in place, completely reliable - thanks for a very useful tip.
I absolutely adore your solution!. I live in a caravan & I use those command hooks for all kinds of things ! The insides of cabinet/closet doors are one of my favorites. Under the sink inside walls . But I Never thought of putting them on my uke! You are my new favorite female thinker! I will send a pic.
absolutely loved this video! I've been wanting to make straps for my children for a while now! this is such a creative way to do it. I just became the proud mother of a baritone ukulele, I found him at a pawn shop and got him for $20, in PERFECT condition!!!!!! I also have a concert, tenor, and soprano! I love your family of ukuleles!
I like strap #2. Purchased my first ukulele today, it didn't have strap buttons and I was concerned about drilling a hole. Someone recommended Velcro and I just didn't want to do that. The Command Strip hook is so clever. I will picking up a pack of these strips tomorrow. Thanks so much Bernadette.
I made a first version strap but because I sew, I made bias tape and added buttons and button holes to put it in place, so that I don't have to tie it. I don't really like it however because the part at the "waist" bothers me when I am playing. So maybe it would be a good idea to try that with the other options but instead of tying the ends I would put on a button on the part at the top of the uke (for the 2nd version), and then just a buttonhole to go in the hook(s). Just sharing the idea for all the sewing lovers :) Be careful though, if you do the 2nd version, put the button hole at the very end of the strap, and the button higher, because you won't be able to make the button go behind the strings.
My father got a ukulele as a gift but he had no interest in playing so i started learning it from your 30 day uke challenge and this video was just what i needed my ukulele was slipping so i couldn't play it properly . I amde the first strap and its so much better. A VERY BIG THANK YOU
#3 - I also like your tassels! The command hooks are a great idea for the lacquered ukes that don't have them and would likely be damaged by strap button installation. Really useful video! 🙂
You're so cute, I love that you painted the hooks and then your nails the same colour and how you customise everything. I actually got a strap with my ukulele and it's really pretty but I don't wanna drill into my ukulele for a hook so this video is perfect, thank you! I'll definitely try option 2. Already tried option 1 myself but don't like how that looks either.
I used a long shoe lace from the dollar store that is about 3/4" wide to make a strap for my mandolin. I do like the command hook idea for my ukes. Great idea.
Great diy uke straps. I always like 2 strap buttons it's the best option. 1. It holds on better 2. hugs your body more so does not flop down like when tied on headstock. 3. These straps you made are a bit too thin guitar straps are way more comfortable 4. you can adjust guitar straps. 5. You can use the tshirt string, twine etc to make a loop to hook the strap on if the holes for regular strap buttons don't work. This is the best option in my opinion.
Those were cute! I have already placed a hole and strap lock buckle button/screws in all of my ukes. I bought inexpensive guitar straps online and I'm happy with them. I'm not sure if I would've used the adhesive hooks, but they definitely are practical without the difficulty of making a hole ((especially if you ~don't~ have a drill but you ~do~ have neighbours to disturb with a hammer)). Yours are cute.
I just started playing and the Ukulele that I got was more due to opportunity however it did not come with a strap. This video is amazing and I'm learning halleluiah from another of your videos!!
I like these ideas and love the tassel look. I was thinking of making a strap for the head that has a loop to hook into...so the loop always stays on the head so you don't have to deal w tying and untying but can still have the angle that way.
When I bought my first uke about a month ago, I picked it because of how it sounded, not realizing a strap might be necessary. This is a perfect solution, and I even have command hooks in the junk drawer. Planning on weaving a pretty strap at some point.
I used ukulele for the first time ever in class today for the kids to sing. Then only I realized the importance of ukulele strap. Lol. Glad I found your helpful vid. Thank you! ☺
Thanks for the great ideas. I just bought a transparent Waterman ukulele and was trying to think of how to add a strap. Clear Command hooks should do the job without breaking up the transparency of the uke. Then I add a clear plastic strap and I’m good to go!
Love this video for a couple of reasons. First, like you, I don't care for a long introduction and unnecessary chatter. Second, great ideas! I'm hooked! (Pun intended.)
Made #3 today with Paracord which comes in a variety of nice colors and patterns. Works great! (And if I can make it, anyone can. I cannot do anything "crafty.")
Thank you so much!!!! I needed a strap but I couldn’t find an easy one that didn’t require drilling holes and I only have one so I didn’t want to risk it. You’re the best!!
I already had the idea to use command hooks rather that screwing in the little knob for the straps, but I really love how you thought to paint it with metallic nail polish, it really gives it a nice look, I’m going to do that too!
I just bought an Oscar Schmidt ou5ek, no strap buttons on it. I'm in the middle of the 30 day challenge also. Looks like my teacher has tips on everything! Thanks for the command strip idea! I will try that out.
I love your creative ideas, pretty yet simple straps. Getting my 4th ukulele today and very hopeful that I will learn to play properly and diligently!!! I just reconnect with your channel. I love your way of teaching, giving students enough time to emulate how your fingers are placed. Your ‘look up’ prompt works really well for me. Can’t wait to start for real, this time. You’re doing a great job, thank you so much.
Yes! It’s a simple solution for the people who don’t want to drill into their ukes! I didn’t think of this, though. I was in a music teacher forum when someone shared that tip ☺️
I love the fact that your hair matches the strap, and your nails match the hooks. You are always thinking about the esthetics of the situation! :) As for the straps, I am only having trouble holding my soprano. I don't have trouble supporting my concert ukulele or the tenors that I have played (I don't own one... yet!). But the soprano is just so little for me, I can't seem to get myself scrunched up enough to hold it securely with my left arm so that my right is free to move from one chord to certain others where I feel like I need to let go of the neck end to get my fingers into position. I kind of hesitate to do anything, because I know I am not the first person to be met with this problem! But rather than get frustrated by this, I am looking at a half-strap or uke leash that someone makes just to hold the neck end without needing to be attached to the other end (it attaches to the player instead). I'm hoping it will help in this situation without causing me to develop bad habits. I don't intend to use it on the larger ukes, so I think I will be ok. But I am not going to dye my hair pink. :)
Thank you very much for the very useful video, Bernadette. I have a concert and think that I will try type 2. I need a good ukulele balance (since mine is awful!) and thus doesn't block the sound hole
I think # 2 will be the most comfortable hanging. So the trick would be to have a quick way to release the neck string. Thank you so much for your demo!!!
another way is to do it is quite like option two, but instead of a commander hook you can use a strong type of tape it’s been working well for me, regular duct tape is good it’s not the best thing in the world, but i feel as if it’s more secure than the hooks
Love the third option, Bernadette! What I found helpful: instead of putting the top-most clip where you placed it, place it past the neck, just on the other side, and it won't do the leaning downward thing that happened in the video. Thanks for such a wonderful and crafty idea, Bernadette!
I love how creative you get with style! Something I did to make the knots pretty is cord wrapping the tails of yarn upwards with embroidery thread. Gives the ukelele a nice framing and u can get as extra as u want with making stripes or an ombré of color :) Tons of vids on how to wrap cord if u dont know wtf im talking about lol.
I went with the shoe lace idea. It was easy, and it works great for me, but it's a little uncomfortable. I might try the t shirt idea, looks like it would be more comfortable. Thanks for the video. It was a big help.
This helped so much! I have a friend who is learning how to play the uke, and she always says she has trouble playing and standing so i went out and bought the command hooks at target and they worked so perfectly! And since i have so many extra i told her about the diy and gave her some! Oh btw we both think option 2 is the best because it hold the uke in place :))
Oh my goodness! I am so happy to hear about this. Thank you so much for coming back and letting me know that the diy worked for you and your friend. Every month make sure to test that the hooks are still sticky so that your ukulele is safe 💕
Hi, watched a few of your video's already and this one was great! as I didn't want to "DRILL" into my Twisted Wood Ukulele. I am a south paw, so I had a false start with playing right handed and causing myself severe wrist pain. The strap helps a lot.
Hi,Ime thinking of buying a Kala KA-STGE-C Tenor Electro Ukulele, and it hasn't got any strap buttons, and I don't want to risk making holes in it in case the sound changes,so this is a great help in helping me to decide what Ime going to do!
I like the command strip idea, looks like it would work really well,.......i bet pink is your favorite color, lol😀, thanks for the great tips and video.
This was super helpful! Thank you :-) I'm gonna try strap2, but I agree that having it hanging off the front isn't ideal, but I'm just going to loop the end of the strap through hole at the bottom so it can be easily removed.
Do you know how helpful this video is? 😍 Especially at 8:27 where you did a little demo of mini-walking! So cute. I just bought a clear/transparent ukulele and was thinking of ways to put a strap on without drilling the side (it’s acrylic, I can’t drill it even if I wanted to). The mini hook is a perfect DIY tip! It won’t damage my uke. Also, I could actually get a proper uke strap to go with it, if I decide not to make the strap myself. Heheeee. Thank you! 😍😭

It's all good, she's very generous with her talents! Thankyou, Bernadette!
I'm a sewer, I made my own strap..love it these are great ideas.
i love the way she says “ukulele” :))
Yeaa! Me too
Its actually the proper pronunciation!
The pronunciation is actually Hawaiian
Germans say Ukulele also like Mrs.B😊
In Poland we also pronounce “ukulele” this way ☺️. It’s very natural for me.
Ookolele
tha's right!
Bernadette Teaches Music i wasnt making fun💜 i i just like the way you say it💜
that’s how it was originally pronounced (it’s how it should be said) haha
sal schorp thanks for the fun fact i actually didnt know that!❤😂
That's how I say it too. Not because I just pronounce it that way, but because I like to.
You remind me of nymphadora tonks from harry potter. She's one of my favourite characters
OMG!!!! Thank you so much!!!! I love her and Harry Potter!!!!!

J'me disais bien que je t'avais déjà vu quelque part ; J'ADORE tes vidéos continues comme ça !
I like strap 2 because it seems more supportive . That said , #3 is easier to remove completely.
Thanks for the video!
that's exactly how I feel!

Oh my gosh!! How did you know that I needed this 😂
I've been needing a uke strap and I'm knitting one right now, but this is so much easier!!
Jill Stephenson if you knitted a long strand you can use that as your strap!
A knitted or crocheted band would be great. You'll have to post a pic of yours when it's done. What a cool idea.
Great idea! Im going to knit mine too!
@@loverlyme I just found some fun-colored parachute cord I was going to braid, but now I'm going to ask my Mom to knit it for me!
Jill Stephenson :)
I improvised a strap using an old Obie belt from a second hand market stall. Thanks for the great ideas!
I loved the command hook idea!! I've never thought about that
Diana1707 I looked on Pinterest for HOURS to find something that was different from Strap #1. Hidden in the caves of Pinterest I found this idea 💡
Bernadette Teaches Music that's what I call dedication
+Diana1707 😂 thank you!!!

which command hooks did you choose? I'm trying to find some reliable and sticky too

I've used option #2 on a soprano uke for 3 years and the command hook is still holding well
Thank you for letting us know! This is excellent!
Good to know! I am scared to drill into my uke and was wondering about command strips.
I like the third one because you can take it off! I never thought of using command strips! Thank you!

So glad I decided to look at your older videos and most popular..I needed this one! I am enjoying your lessons. You're a good teacher!
the command hack was so helping, and I'm literally sending this to all my uke-fan friends!
Second one's my favourite, I like the tassles too, it's the prettiest :)
I made a first version strap but because I sew, I made bias tape and added buttons and button holes to put it in place, so that I don't have to tie it. I don't really like it however because the part at the "waist" bothers me when I am playing.

Hi Sara! I love your insight! Thank you so much! I’m going to pin this comment so that more people can see it!
Sara Mauffrey I do have a ukulele and I could see that getting annoying where the waist is 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
Brilliant idea!

My daughter just made strap #1 for her ukelele with a boot lace we had in the junk drawer, it works great! Thank you.
I used a long shoe lace from the dollar store that is about 3/4" wide to make a strap for my mandolin. I do like the command hook idea for my ukes. Great idea.
The command strips and shoelace method worked perfectly! Thanks !
Great diy uke straps. I always like 2 strap buttons it's the best option.
1. It holds on better
2. hugs your body more so does not flop down like when tied on headstock.
3. These straps you made are a bit too thin guitar straps are way more comfortable

Oops just noticed I did a slightly different reply to this 4 months ago forgot when I saw this today.

I have wondered how command hooks would work! Thank you for this video!

I've been looking for a way to get around drilling a peg. Thank you. I'm excited to try out the command hook.
I used ukulele for the first time ever in class today for the kids to sing. Then only I realized the importance of ukulele strap. Lol. Glad I found your helpful vid. Thank you! ☺
The second Ukulele is absolutely gorgeous😍😍😍😍
thank you! :)
Thanks for the great ideas. I just bought a transparent Waterman ukulele and was trying to think of how to add a strap. Clear Command hooks should do the job without breaking up the transparency of the uke. Then I add a clear plastic strap and I’m good to go!
Great. I have a crush now. I love the command strip idea.
The Command hooks worked great!
That command strip idea is brilliant!!!
I needed this video. I have been drilling holes and attaching screws and washers for years.
+Ellen Lehrer 😂 that is awesome!!!!
Thank you so much!!!! I needed a strap but I couldn’t find an easy one that didn’t require drilling holes and I only have one so I didn’t want to risk it. You’re the best!!
You gave me some very good ideas I have 4 ukuleles that as only one strap button I will get myself some hooks thank you my friend all my best Ramon
This is great! I am sharing it with the members of my uke club!!! Thank you!!
I already had the idea to use command hooks rather that screwing in the little knob for the straps, but I really love how you thought to paint it with metallic nail polish, it really gives it a nice look, I’m going to do that too!
This is brilliant! I just bought a Kala Waterman, and I love option #3 for adding a strap to my plastic uke.
I tried all three and the 2nd and 3rd are awesome. I think I prefer the 2nd only because it’s more stable when it’s on your back
I just made one from shoe lace, works fine and looks cute! Thank you very much for sharing!
Your command hook hack was perfect for my uncommonly shaped Zither Heaven Banjolele! Thank you!
Love this idea. I have some of these similar hooks in my desk drawer. Never thought of this. You are very brilliant to come up with this.
Yes! It’s a simple solution for the people who don’t want to drill into their ukes! I didn’t think of this, though. I was in a music teacher forum when someone shared that tip ☺️
I loved your idea! I'm using the second option because my Makala shark couldn't be pierced! Thank you!!
How long resisted?
Good ideas for someone who does arts and crafts! Thank you!
Miriam Conley yeah! And for anyone who doesn’t want to drill into the ukulele
heading to the dollar store for command strips and shoelaces/t-shirt, THANK YOU for these super affordable DIY suggestions!
The second one... I love it!!! ❤
I love the fact that your hair matches the strap, and your nails match the hooks. You are always thinking about the esthetics of the situation! :)
As for the straps, I am only having trouble holding my soprano. I don't have trouble supporting my concert ukulele or the tenors that I have played (I don't own one... yet!). As a mandolin player I'll say that para cord works great and can be woven. Iv also used long leather that's can be got from hobby lobby store.
+Rick Ncarolina ohhhh!!! Leather would look really nice! Thank you for suggesting that!!!
#2 is my absolute favvvvvvv!👍🏻 (with a few adjustments made)
another way is to do it is quite like option two, but instead of a commander hook you can use a strong type of tape
it’s been working well for me, regular duct tape is good
it’s not the best thing in the world, but i feel as if it’s more secure than the hooks
Thanks for all the creative DIY videos!!!
Yesssss! I love the t-shirt yarn idea and the tassels they make are perfect!
I just got my baritone ukulele in the mail today, this video was really helpful!! Thank you so much!! 😄
Yay!!!!! That’s awesome!!! Which bari uke did you buy?
Love the third option, Bernadette! What I found helpful: instead of putting the top-most clip where you placed it, place it past the neck, just on the other side, and it won't do the leaning downward thing that happened in the video.
Thanks for such a wonderful and crafty idea, Bernadette!
How long resisted?
I love how creative you get with style! Something I did to make the knots pretty is cord wrapping the tails of yarn upwards with embroidery thread. Gives the ukelele a nice framing and u can get as extra as u want with making stripes or an ombré of color :) Tons of vids on how to wrap cord if u dont know wtf im talking about lol.
Great idea!
Ya look so cute !
Making option 3 ASAP!
Oh my goodness! I am so happy to hear about this. Thank you so much for coming back and letting me know that the diy worked for you and your friend. Every month make sure to test that the hooks are still sticky so that your ukulele is safe 💕
Bernadette Teaches Music We Will Thanks For The Tip!!
Hi, watched a few of your video's already and this one was great! as I didn't want to "DRILL" into my Twisted Wood Ukulele. I am a south paw, so I had a false start with playing right handed and causing myself severe wrist pain. The strap helps a lot.
love that the strap matches your pink hair! all your vids are very useful.
Hi,Ime thinking of buying a Kala KA-STGE-C Tenor Electro Ukulele, and it hasn't got any strap buttons, and I don't want to risk making holes in it in case the sound changes,so this is a great help in helping me to decide what Ime going to do!
Great idea my ukulele seems to have a mind of its own😊
I was just about to buy one, thanks for inspiration to make my own.
I like the command strip idea, looks like it would work really well,.......i bet pink is your favorite color, lol😀, thanks for the great tips and video.
the 1st one i used and it works amazing
I can’t wait to check out ukuleles tomorrow! I’ve never picked one up and I can’t wait to play 😁😁
Ahhh!!! Take picture and video so you can compare when you leave the store! Hope you find the right fit!
I love the third one!
Thanks again, B. I really love your channel and how your cat finds a way to be in some of your videos. :D
Number 3 is very good, i'll try, thx!
Thanks Bernadette! All my ukes have a strap now and it’s so much easier to move around with! Loving it! 💕
Oh yay!!!! Isn't it crazy what a big difference the straps make? Thank you for coming back and letting me know it's working for you! ❤️❤️
More pleaseee! I love ukulele diys!
This was super helpful! Thank you :-) I'm gonna try strap2, but I agree that having it hanging off the front isn't ideal, but I'm just going to loop the end of the strap through hole at the bottom so it can be easily removed.
I found this video super helpful. I like 2 and 3 the best. I’ve never used command hooks before but I’ll definitely try them!
I used #3 version, and made the strap from a belt, it's really nice and useful
I like #2 and #3 the best! Also thank you soooo much for pronouncing ukulele right!!! Not even the youtube pronunciation video says it right! xoxox
Thank you for the idea. I like the last two ideas
Thank you! I made the 2nd one and I love it! Great tutorial.
Heheeee. Thank you! 😍😭
I truly like the video. The third is very cool.
FINALLY! I HAVE A UKE STRAP. i made the first one (because i'm broke) and i can finally play shows without dropping my uke! nice!
oh my gosh you have helped me with songs a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much, Roland! That is great news ❤️❤️❤️
